What happens when physical strength becomes a lifelong tool for service, resilience, and purpose? In this episode of Unstoppable Mindset, I sit down with Osvaldo Aponte, a Puerto Rico–born personal trainer and military veteran whose journey blends discipline, movement, and mental toughness. Osvaldo shares how growing up in a close-knit community shaped his view of strength, how the Army reinforced resilience and leadership, and why fitness must support life rather than control it. From kettlebell training and biomechanics to recovery after a life-altering bike accident, this conversation explores physical capability as a foundation for confidence, service, and long-term well-being. You'll hear why consistency beats intensity, how strength builds trust in yourself, and what it really means to live with an unstoppable mindset. Highlights: 00:46 – Learn how growing up in Puerto Rico shaped a lifelong connection to movement, community, and discipline. 08:29 – Hear why joining the military became a gateway to structure, confidence, and opportunity. 14:48 – Discover how early physical preparation made the demands of basic training feel natural. 30:42 – Learn how a near-fatal bike accident forced a clear decision about purpose and priorities. 34:39 – Hear why strength is more than muscle and becomes a mindset for life and service. 53:31 – Discover the long-term habits that make people resilient, adaptable, and truly unstoppable. If we are to build systems that meet our real needs we have to first understand what those needs are and start growing the stuff that will allow us to thrive: good food from healthy soils, safe and supportive homes and communities, space to develop and express our creativity, opportunities to increase our capacity for co-operation and kindness. As much as these, though, we need to understand what an economy is for - why it does what it does. And while we're all clear that the death cult of Predatory Capitalism exists to enrich the few at the expense of the rest of the living web, it's not always clear what a flourishing economy might look like. So we're going to explore exactly this with our guest today. Inez Aponte is a self-described 'Dissident of Capitalism', she's an educator, storyteller, and consultant who's spent 15 years bridging mainstream economics with human-scale alternatives. Using the Human Scale Development Approach (Barefoot Economics), she helps professionals see the economic system itself, and imagine what comes next.Barefoot Economics (also known as Human Scale Development) was developed by Manfred Max-Neef and colleagues in Chile as a response to the predations of the colonial capital system. It reframes economic thinking away from endless wants and towards nine fundamental needs: Subsistence, Freedom, Participation, Understanding, Affection, Creation, Idleness, Protection and Identity. We are wealthy when our needs are satisfied, regardless of our income. This means we can also be poor in multiple ways, even when we have a ‘healthy' bank balance.Inez has built this forward into a framework for the 21st century. Her 'Beautiful Economies Learning Lab' breaks people out of mainstream economic thinking to explore how we can build systems that meet real needs while healing ourselves, communities, and the Earth. So this is our deep dive. We trace Antonio Aponte's path from Broadway actor to creative educator—and how finding the right match can mean more than chasing a big name when guiding first-gen families toward college and career success. This episode dives deep into what real opportunity looks like, from choosing the right school to unlocking financial aid, internships, and alternative career paths. In this episode, we cover: • Aligning students with schools that fit their goals and support systems • Demystifying financial aid, scholarships, and affordability • Trades and certifications as lucrative, fulfilling options • Lessons from theater—presence, listening, and persistence • Building social capital through mentors and alumni networks • The SUNY Purchase pilot that boosted student retention • Internship experiences that became long-term careers • The story behind the Latino College Expo: how it started and where it's headed • Navigating post-pandemic education and virtual opportunities • “Cheat codes” for early-career growth and confidence
Send us a textA missed title at a conference shouldn't spark a crisis of identity—yet for Elena, a decorated senior research fellow, it did. We follow that sharp sting and instant correction to uncover a deeper pattern: when confidence depends on credentials, minor slights can feel like existential threats. Using a vivid case from Aponte's “The Mask of Credentials,” we explore how ego maintenance becomes brittle, how vulnerable narcissism hides behind quiet competence, and why the chase for recognition keeps failing to deliver durable self-worth.We unpack the psychology from several angles. Freud gives us the frame for ego defenses, while contemporary research maps narcissism as a spectrum with grandiose and vulnerable forms. Kohut's theory of missing mirroring explains the craving for external validation, and Kernberg's model clarifies the split between a polished public image and a hidden core of shame. We trace two development pathways—chronic invalidation and overindulgence—and show how both can produce entitlement, poor frustration tolerance, and hypersensitivity to status cues. Then we widen the lens to culture: social media rewards the mask of success, driving a cycle of short-lived highs, escalating corrections, and brittle relationships.Along the way, we examine the relational cost. When identity is outsourced to others' reactions, people become instruments—mirrors to reflect a preferred image—rather than partners. Miss the cue, and value plummets. To break the loop, we share concrete practices: catch the surge when status feels threatened, pause before correcting, and ask, “Would I still believe in my value if no one noticed?” We introduce logical humility—the discipline of letting ideas stand on their own—so credentials become tools, not life support. Finally, we challenge a subtler mask: grandiose suffering, the move to claim specialness through hardship rather than achievement. If you've ever felt your mood hinge on recognition, this conversation offers a path to steadier ground. At just 16, Os Aponte was running a martial arts school in Puerto Rico with over a hundred students. Today, he's a U.S. Army veteran, author, and strength coach known for blending martial arts discipline, neuroscience, and movement mastery into a philosophy of lifelong fitness. In this conversation, Os shares how leading soldiers in the Army shaped his approach to strength, why “less is more” in training, and how neural efficiency—not just muscle size—creates real, lasting power. You'll also hear how kettlebells, gait mechanics, and breathwork can rewire your body for performance at any age.Whether you're a coach, athlete, or weekend mover, Os's story will challenge how you think about fitness and inspire you to see training as a lifelong pursuit of self-mastery.We discuss:How Os became a martial arts instructor at 16What the military taught him about leadership and physical masteryThe difference between strength, conditioning, and fitnessWhy neurological training beats burnoutThe power of the Turkish get-up and “leaving one in the tank”How to make your fitness serve your life—not the other way around
The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
In this episode of the Dad Edge Podcast, Larry Hagner is joined by Oscar “Oz” Aponte—a U.S. Army veteran, StrongFirst kettlebell instructor, and founder of Iron Core—to explore what real strength means as a man, a father, and a leader. Oz brings a powerful blend of physical mastery and spiritual depth, helping men move from brute force to intentional presence. Together, they unpack how posture, breath, nervous system regulation, and movement patterns shape your long-term vitality—not just in the gym, but at the dinner table, in your marriage, and in your legacy. More than a conversation about fitness, this is a deep dive into fatherhood, grief, and building your life with intention. Whether you're a kettlebell junkie or just a dad looking to show up better, this episode will challenge you to redefine strength on every level. TIMELINE SUMMARY [0:00] - Welcome to the Dad Edge mission: changing generations [1:00] - Os' dad: love, legacy, and shaping a son through presence [4:05] - The final moments Os had with his father before he passed [6:42] - The cycle-breaking power of a father who never had one [9:58] - Combining Eastern mindfulness with Western strength [12:21] - Training for longevity vs. ego [14:45] - Redefining masculinity as balance, not burnout [19:23] - Nervous system health: “the threat bucket” metaphor [25:36] - The seasons of fitness (and why to respect them) [28:15] - How posture and gait silently break men down [30:37] - Tissues adapt to dysfunction—unless you intervene [33:33] - Why kettlebells work: simple tools, elite results [38:55] - Busy dads: how to train with limited time and space [40:37] - Core movements every man should master [44:13] - The “Simple & Sinister” training approach [47:13] - Kettlebell workshops, coaching, and learning more 5 KEY TAKEAWAYS 1. Strength Is Presence Being strong isn't just about lifting weight—it's about how grounded, aware, and calm you are with your family. 2. Your Nervous System Is Running the Show Stress, posture, sleep, and breath all impact your strength more than ego lifting ever could. Master your internal world first. 3. Movement Is Medicine Poor gait and posture don't just cause pain—they drain your energy and shorten your lifespan. Train smart, not just hard. 4. Simplicity Wins You don't need a fancy gym or complicated gear. One kettlebell and intentional reps can outperform a cluttered workout. 5. Legacy Is Built in the Small Moments Oz's story shows that being a strong father isn't about perfection. It's about showing up, being present, and choosing intentionality every day. Send us a textWe dive deep into how digital algorithms shape our thinking and behavior through subtle reward systems rather than direct commands, exploring Michael Aponte's concept of "digitally optimized obedience" and its far-reaching implications for individual autonomy and society. Drawing from Aponte's research, the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, and Harvard Medical School findings, we examine how technology is fundamentally reshaping our sense of morality and acceptable speech through invisible algorithmic nudges.• Digitally optimized obedience works through rewards and incentives, not direct commands or fear• Algorithms create feedback loops that train users to behave in ways that generate engagement • Content amplification functions as implicit moral approval while shadow-banning marks ideas as unacceptable• Echo chambers and filter bubbles create the illusion of information while narrowing our perspectives• Algorithms deliberately escalate content toward more extreme versions to maintain engagement• Digital platforms known to target children's developing brains despite awareness of potential harm• Self-censorship emerges as users internalize algorithmic preferences to gain social rewards• Reclaiming autonomy requires conscious awareness of how algorithms shape our choicesTake a moment to consider how deeply algorithms are influencing your thoughts and behaviors. This episode of the Lloyd's List Podcast was brought to you by Wirana - visit www.wirana.com/ for more information THERE are tens of thousands of shipowners in the world, but only a handful of them can be properly be classified as major players. Much of the content of Lloyd's List naturally focuses on the MSCs, Frontlines and Maersk's of this world, whose fleet lists run to the hundreds. When they want to pick up some newbuildings or even to buy one of their rivals, they have few problems finding the finance. Banks refer to them as tier one clients and actively court their business, on preferential terms. But the mean average owner is probably a family-owned businesses with maybe half a dozen ships and the median average operator will have perhaps a few dozen. These kinds of guys are the backbone of our industry. Historically, they didn't have too hard a time of time it either. Until the early years of this century, many European banks were up to their neck in ship finance and indeed, some were devoted to it entirely. This was the era of what was known as relationship banking. Shipping bankers actually understood shipping, including its cyclical nature. Owners with a sensible business plan, maybe backed by long-term charter employment, and a decent equity stake could usually negotiate a sustainable mortgage. This lost age disappeared with the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008, when European banks largely quit the scene. In the following decade, private equity moved in and made a small fortune, but only by starting with a large one. Chinese leasing deals became the preferred option – and sometimes the only option - for many. But their S&P choices face increasing constraints. New environmental regulations are coming in thick and fast, and there is still no agreement on what alternative fuels will be standard, or even available at all, a few years from now. Politics is always the wild card, and Trump's decision to introduce hefty port fees on tonnage build in China or legally owned by Chinese lessors will have blindsided many. So if your surname is not Aponte or Fredriksen, how the heck do you make rational S&P decisions? TLDR: Elder wisdom is essential to our revolution. That's it, that's the episode. But my guest deserves the elaboration and accolades of a full summary––as do many of the folks who came before us in work and life. Harry J. Aponte, Ph.D., is a legend for many reasons. However, this OG coalition-builder and advocate for culturally informed care is probably best known in professional psychology circles for developing The Person of the Therapist Training Model, which has become a cornerstone of his professional philosophy. I'm honored to share Harry's fascinating origin story and anecdotes from his amazing career with y'all. GUEST BIO Harry J. Aponte, Ph.D., was born in the United States to Puerto Rican parents, he earned his Master's in Social Work from Fordham University in 1959. His career took a significant turn when he began working with Sal Minuchin at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic, eventually becoming the Clinic's Director. He has delivered lectures across Europe, South America, Korea, and throughout the United States. Additionally, he is the author of several influential books and is currently in private practice. Early in his career, he developed a keen interest in leveraging therapists' personal life experiences to connect with clients, understand their issues, and apply these insights in therapeutic work. This approach, known as Person of the Therapist Training, has become a cornerstone of his professional philosophy.
