The 2024-25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship began with a bang in Sao Paulo with Mitch Evans taking an extraordinary last to first win in his new Jaguar Gen3Evo machine. That was only part of a dramatic landscape to a race that also included two red flags, the last of which was for Pascal Wehrlein's inverted Porsche. The reigning champion emerged unscathed from the wreck after tangling with fellow assumed title rival Nick Cassidy's already damaged Jaguar. Other stellar performances analysed include Taylor Barnard's remarkable third place and Oliver Rowland's strong weekend which was devalued and unrewarded due to team errors and poor reliability. We hear from Rowland and Barnard, as well as Jaguar TCS Racing boss James Barclay who describes some of the trickier moments from another complex and scintillating race. Host Andrew van de Burgt and reporter Sam Smith dive in to the fall-out from a spectacular opener that saw the true return of potent attack mode and an upswing in lap time largely thanks to All-Wheel-Drive and a new tyre compound. Kevin Turner hosts the latest episode of the Autosport Podcast as he sits down with Stefan Mackley and broadcaster Karun Chandhok to preview the 11th season of Formula E, which kicks off in Sao Paolo this weekend. After Pascal Wehrlein won the Championship in a heated decider in London in the summer, he's back to try to retain the title, and if pre-season testing was anything to go by, Porsche looks like entering Season 11 as favourites. They've also expanded to six cars on their powertrains as the rebranded Kiro will also be running previous-spec powertrains. Their main opposition will likely be Jaguar, who still carry arguably the strongest driver line-up in the series with Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy. But can the pair of New Zealanders co-exist? There's also a discussion about Lola returning to Motorsport in collaboration with Yamaha and F2 race winner Zane Maloney making his series debut, why it could finally be Dan Ticktum's year, and how the new "Pit Boost" feature will affect the series famous "Peloton" racing style. Formula E celebrates its 10th Anniversary later this year and with it, it's time to take a look back and rank the series 10 best drivers since its inception in China back in 2014. Deputy National Editor and Formula E Reporter Stefan Mackley is joined on the Podcast by series broadcaster Saunders Carmichael-Brown to go back and forth on their own Top 10 lists and argue their case. Many of the series World Champions make the list such as 2024 series Champion Pascal Wehrlein, Sebastien Buemi, and Jean-Eric Vergne. But do any of the other veterans like Mitch Evans, Sam Bird or Felix Rosenqvist make it? Listen in and find out! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Newly crowned Formula E World Champion Pascal Wehrlein joins Andrew van de Burgt and Sam Smith to describe how he claimed the big prize and what it means to bring Porsche its first all-electric title in London. Also joining the show is TAG-Heuer Porsche Formula E Teams director Florian Modlinger. He goes in to detail on how the title was won and what it means after a five year quest for glory. The fall-out from the Jaguar strategy missteps are also analysed, along with the detail of how the Big Cat found itself in a complicated situation of celebrating the teams title but having to manage two disappointed and angry drivers in Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy. Other stand-out performers like Oliver Rowland and Maximilian Guenther are also discussed in the finale which saw all manner of action, including a fraught weekend for out-going champion Jake Dennis. At the end of each week, Mike Hosking takes you through the big-ticket items and lets you know what he makes of it all. The shooting: 7/10 Because it's changed the race, possibly changed the world, put a spotlight on America and focused in on all that is wrong and right about the place. Donald Trump: 9/10 Survived a shooting, may or may not have involved God and got another court case delayed while getting his party's nomination. So a pretty good week then. Joe Biden: 3/10 This time last week he held a press conference to reassure everyone, except he ended up doing the opposite, then went and got Covid while his party panics and passes open letters around the place. Arbitrators: 7/10 Say whatever you want about the police pay decision, but it's a hell of a lot better than a year's worth of back and forward going nowhere, isn't it? The King and Queen: 4/10 Not coming. Booo. Our motor racers: 8/10 Liam Lawson in RB20 testing, Scott McLaughlin winning in Indy and the first time on an oval, plus Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy looking to win the Formula E title this weekend. That's a lot of talent in a big world from a small country. LISTEN ABOVE FOR MIKE HOSKING'S FULL WEEK IN REVIEW See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Liam Lawson isn't the only Kiwi excelling in the world of motorsports as two Kiwis sit in first and second heading into the final races of Formula-E. Nick Cassidy sits atop the standings, with Mitch Evans just behind him. It's Cassidy's title to lose, and he'll be looking to bounce back from a difficult last round in Portland, where he wasn't able to secure points. He told Mike Hosking that Portland made his life probably a bit more difficult than it needs to be going into London, but sometimes that's part of the game. “The job ahead is still the same job, and I think we can get it done.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The 2024 ABB FIA Formula E world championship title fight was blown wide open at the expansive Portland International Raceway as Antonio Felix da Costa scored a remarkable double for Porsche. After scoring zero points in the first three races and having even his position in the Porsche team questioned, da Costa is now an outside bet to become a double Formula E champion in the most unlikely of scenarios. But realistically it's a scrap between Jaguar teammates Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy, as well as da Costa's teammate Pascal Wehrlein. Just 12 points separate them heading in to the final rounds at London ExCeL Arena in two week's time. Cassidy could and should have put the crown to bed in Portland but both Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt analyse how he managed to spin away his chances on the penultimate lap of Saturday's race. The controversial penalty that lost Mitch Evans the win is deep-dived in to, as is the performances of Sunday polesitter Jean-Eric Vergne, Abt miracle maker Nico Mueller and a rejuvenated Robin Frijns from Envision. Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt are joined by motorsport writer and The Race contributor, Alice Holloway, as the business end of the 2024 Formula E season arrives, with talk of the title fight now being a straight scrap between Jaguar's Nick Cassidy and Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein. But neither of them took the wins as the all-electric world championship returned to mainland China for the first time since 2015. It was their respective teammates Mitch Evans and Antonio Felix da Costa that triumphed after well-judged victories in more high-energy target races. The future of da Costa and his at times fraught relationship with Porsche is discussed, as is the likelihood of Jake Dennis now not being able to defend his title and Nissan's Oliver Rowland also losing ground to his rivals. The trials and tribulations of Envision Racing are analysed, as is the future of Stoffel Vandoorne and the likelihood of Silverstone becoming the future home of a UK Formula E round. The Race Formula E podcast takes an in-depth look in to a tempestuous weekend at Berlin Tempelhof where Nick Cassidy and Antonio Felix da Costa triumphed amid a hail of carbon shards and intra-team and manufacturer recriminations. The Race team explain why the racing was so fraught and what the slow-build and then quick burst peloton style of racing means for Formula E's future. The bigger picture of what Cassidy's bumper points haul means for the title race is also analysed, as is how his teammate Mitch Evans might be able to haul himself back in to contention after a tricky weekend in Germany. Oliver Rowland's continued impressive form is discussed alongside how it might be affecting his teammate Sacha Fenestraz. A round up of the news includes a likely all-female test at Valencia in November and the latest possibilities for new venues in the much debated 2025 calendar. Hosts Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt also pointlessly reminisce about the 1983 Long Beach Grand Prix, Jean-Pierre Jarier's erratic form and why Smith randomly stole a packet of Haribo from a private jet. Jaguar's peerless 1-2 at Monaco is picked apart by Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt as the Big Cat captured only its second 1-2 in the all-electric world championship. Mitch Evans victory was only one key aspect of a busy weekend which also saw plenty of off track news including Jaguar's commitment to the Gen4 rules era, the unveiling of the Gen3Evo model that will race from next season onwards and the hiring of former Indycar entrant Beth Paretta. Smith and Van de Burgt also analyse how DS Penske came back in to form, how Oliver Rowland and Antonio Felix da Costa executed epic recovery drives and a remarkable debut from teenage sensation Taylor Barnard who replaced an injured Sam Bird at short notice. Additionally, Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds joins the podcast to talk about the key topics now and for the future as he approaches his first year anniversary of being in charge of the world's only electric world championship. The Kiwis league captain, the Golden Boot winner for the best player in the world, the main main in the Panthers forward pack that's won three straight NRL premierships - is coming to the Warriors. One All Black heading overseas (briefly) has been a talking point this week, with Jordie Barrett's deal to stay in NZ Rugby slightly overshadowed by his rugby playing sabbatical at famous Irish club Leinster The boat for team NZ's America's Cup defence in Barcelona has a name - and it's not a Spanish one. It's been named Taihoro, a name given to them by Ngati Whatua Orakei and means "to move swiftly as the sea between both sky and earth" One of the most generous men in NZ Motorsport has passed, with Sir Colin Giltrap gone aged 84. The Giltrap name is synonymous with motorsport - supporting most of our biggest names including Brendon Hartley, Earl Bamber, Shane van Gisbergen, Mitch Evans and Hayden Paddon. He's also supported plenty of sailors and sailing teams over the years, including team NZ - and was even behind the luring of Tiger Woods to play on our shores in Paraparaumu. A personality and wasn't everyone's cup of tea but he made a huge difference to so many New Zealanders.
A typically action-packed Formula E weekend at the energy-bonkers Misano circuit in Italy is debated in this episode with special guest Maserati MSG's Maximilian Guenther. Oliver Rowland and Pascal Wehrlein were the victors but the biggest story of the weekend was Antonio Felix da Costa's bizarre and petty disqualification and the furious exchanges between Porsche and the FIA That is forensically analysed, as is the why Oliver Rowland ran out of energy while starting the last lap handing Wehrlein the win and the championship points lead. Gunther details his races which involved a strong run to third on Saturday, a dust up with Mitch Evans, getting airborne via kerbs and then seeing another points finish on Sunday being taken away for an incident with Jean-Eric Vergne. Hosts Andrew Van de Burgt and Sam Smith also take a wry-eye look at various other flashpoints, decipher the latest paddock news and indulge, for no particular reason at all, in reminiscing randomly about 1980s boxers and the long-forgotten Cagliari F3000 street race. After an enforced and agonising seven-week gap in the 2024 calendar Formula E is back this weekend with the second Sao Paulo EPrix. Andrew van de Burgt is on feisty form as he questions some of the ‘noise' generated in the intervening period since the Diriyah races in January, while Sam Smith reports from a visit to NEOM McLaren where he chats to team principal Ian James. The recent episode of The Apprentice is mulled over by Van de Burgt who is unflinching in his assessment of what he believed was a major lost opportunity for Formula E. The pair also discuss if Sao Paulo will see the first true energy saving race of the season and how both Mitch Evans and Antonio Felix da Costa can properly kick-start their tough seasons so far. The two Diriyah EPrixs through up vastly different protagonists last week with only Nick Cassidy managing to achieve anything bordering on consistency. In this week's Formula E podcast Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt are joined by Envision Racing's Robin Frijns who put behind him a disappointing Friday race in Riyadh to lead but ultimately finish second to Cassidy in the second race. The trio discuss what made the event so difficult and what could be done in the future to make track conditions more conducive to racing. Topics such as Mitch Evans' eventful Friday race, Pascal Wehrlein's damage limitation exercises, surprises from Sergio Sette Camara and Jehan Daruvala, and the worrying form from Antonio Felix da Costa, are also covered off. Welcome back to Formula E on the Motorsport101 Channel, and for our 2024 Season Preview, we brought in Motion Podcast host Sascha Garlick back to chinwag over the Season 10 that starts this Saturday in Mexico City! In this 2-hour preview, we talk about the big issues for the series off the track - Such as their pre-season testing fire in Valencia and the knock-on effect it'll have on Mahindra. We talk about the upcoming Attack Charge pitstops being added that have been pushed back to Misano in April. There's also a big culture clash incoming as more conventional road courses in Misano and Shanghai are being added to the calendar, with Hyderabad pushed out due to a change of governance. Does the series know what it wants to be? Even more so now it's off free-to-air television in the UK? Then we break down all the runners and riders for 2024. Can the Mahindra teams get off the bottom? Can McLaren find some form with Sam Bird now in the ranks? What about Nissan and the return of Oli Rowland alongside Sasha Fenestraz's proven speed? Can Stellantis make their mark after midfield drama last season? And then the big hitters - Can Porsche's two teams co-exist? And can Envision compete with Jaguar's factory Superteam of Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy now Envision's drivers are focusing on Le Mans? All that and more on Motorsport101!

The latest episode of The Race Formula E podcast reports from Valencia after a dramatic pre-season test last week. The spectacular pit fire is discussed in detail by regular hosts Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt, with Smith also gauging the opinions of Porsche boss Florian Modlinger, who also talks about Porsche's 2024 title ambitions. The incoming advent of the fast charging pit stops is also debated, as is the latest tweaks to the calendar that are expected in the coming weeks. Mitch Evans and Gary Paffett are interviewed about their opinions and hopes about the fast charging addition for 2024, while Smith and VDB consider who can take the fight to the pre-eminent Jaguar and Porsche powered cars. In his first interview since becoming a Jaguar TCS Racing driver, Nick Cassidy joins hosts Andrew van de Burgt and Sam Smith to look ahead to his new career chapter as he joins old friend Mitch Evans at ‘The Big Cat'. The challenge of racing for a major manufacturer is touched on, as is the prospect of racing with fellow Kiwi, Mitch Evans in the modern equivalent of the Bruce and Denny show! Cassidy also has a rueful and engaging look back on a dramatic 2023 season, especially the London EPrix in which he looked to be nailed on to take the title battle against Jake Dennis to the final day before a complex failed team orchestration with Sebastien Buemi played out. A look ahead to the upcoming Valencia test is also discussed, as well as all the latest news including anticipating the 2024 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship calendar which is expected to have several twists when the final draft of it is issued this week. Jeremy Seewer, Jorge Prado, Jeffrey Herlings, Pauls Jonass, Mitch Evans and Kevin Horgmo discuss all that happened at round fifteen of the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship.
Mitch Evans talks us through past injuries and where his riding is now. We get a unique look into what has been happening to Mitch now he is injury free.
It wouldn't be Formula E without a final chapter full of carnage right? Mitch Evans gave it everything he had in the first half of the weekend, but Jake Dennis would survive two Red Flags and a huge team orders scandal to take the Formula E World Championship! The struggles are over! But Envision seemingly had a hand in their own demise by refusing to play team orders with Nick Cassidy destroying his car as Sebastien Buemi swiped across him! Who was in the wrong? We also talk about the tame Race 2 as the rain led to a 90-minute delay, and then a race that had next to no action in it at all as Nick Cassidy would dominate to take 2nd in the Championship and the Teams Title for Envision Racing, one of the originals getting their big moment! We talk about all of that as well as Porsche's place in the title race, some of the silly season moves like Cassidy joining Jaguar, the rumours of Sam Bird at McLaren, as well as a shock return for Oli Rowland? All on another M101!

Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt decipher how they did it and how Guenther in particular dominated so many sessions and then the second race in the sultry Indonesian conditions. Nick Cassidy's messy weekend is also dissected, as is Mitch Evans' herculean third place, which came just a day after he was drop-kicked out of contention by his own teammate Sam Bird, for a second time this season. Jake Dennis' recent form has looked ominous and with his happy hunting ground of the London ExCeL Arena track to come at the end of July, Sam and Andrew discuss whether or not this makes him the title favourite. The recent departure of Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle is also mulled over as the all-electric world championship now enters a new epoch under the stewardship of new CEO, Jeff Dodds. Mitch Evans has been a Formula-E driver for Jaguar TCS Racing since 2016, which happened to be Jaguar's initial season in the circuit. Evans is originally from New Zealand, and at the time of this episode, is currently 4th in the championship standings through nine races out of a total of 16. He has two first-place finishes and three podiums this season alone. In this episode, Evans goes in-depth on how reliant a driver is on his team's instructions during a race. In Formula-E, the goal is to finish first but conserve energy in the process. That way, you are assured that you will have enough battery power to finish the race. Evans also talks about his teammate, Sam Bird (Episode 185 of Sports with Friends), and what it's like to be competing against your teammate and every other driver in the race. He also explained the importance of qualifying because batter preservation is not a priority. Follow Mitch Evans on social media @mitchevans_.
It was a good weekend to have a Jaguar powertrain as Envision and Jaguar both split wins as Formula E returned to Tempelhof Airport in Berlin! Mitch Evans led a Jaguar 1-2 finish (Their first ever) in Race 1, with Nick Cassidy taking Race 2 by the scruff of the neck in Race 2, in two fantastic races, with record-breaking numbers. 362 overtakes across the weekend, with 9 different leaders and 22 lead changes across that first Race! And that doesn't include ABT Cupra somehow locking out the front row in Race 2 in a soaking wet qualifying session, or Nick Cassidy getting into a bizarre beef with his own teammate, Sebastien Buemi. AND we had an environmental protest too! And Dre kinda flips out at the lack of emapthy in the whole ordeal! All that and more on a loaded Formula E edition of Motorsport101
New Zealand racing drivers were the big winners in the latest round of the Formula E championship in Germany. Jaguar's Mitch Evans won the opening race and Nick Cassidy driving for Envision Racing had his first win of the season this morning to make it back-to-back wins for racers from Aotearoa. Despite being the only zero-emission all-electric world championship sanctioned by the international governing body for motorsport, this became the latest prominent sports event targeted by protestors.

A memorable first ever Sao Paulo EPrix is picked apart by Jack Nicholls and Sam Smith as they are also joined by third placed finisher Sam Bird. The Jaguar TCS Racing driver talks about his much need result, the fightback from his Hyderabad ignominy and how Formula E is currently proving to be a much more entertaining package than F1. Mitch Evans' first win of the season is analysed, as is the fascinating peloton pack racing style that was seen in Brazil. But is it popular among drivers and viewers? We hear from Antonio Felix da Costa on his race, while Sebastien Buemi details the painful shunt with Max Guenther's Maserati which resulted in the Envision driver receiving hand injuries. We also find out why Jake Dennis described fellow Brit Dan Ticktum as a ‘plonker' and what caused both hometown favourites Lucas di Grassi and Sergio Sette Camara's disastrous races.
