Os Davis has been abandoned by his Rouge White & Blue CFL Podcast co-host Joe Pritchard this week, as that lucky bastard is currently north of the border in preparation to attend games in Montreal and Ottawa. So, subbing in for Joe is longtime CFL devotee Greg James of the From The 55 Yard Line podcast. Greg and Os certainly squeeze quite a bit out of the CFL's week 8 games while also attempting to keep the podcast on the rails – of course, that's not what a podcast is for, likesay kicking around questions like “Must we unequivocally accept Anthony Calvillo as the GOAT CFL QB?” and “What is the best method for watching CFL games from another continent?” and “What, if anything, can get Saskatchewan Roughriders fans back to filling those seats in Mosaic?” All this plus picks and predictions for CFL week 9 on the RWB. Lianne Castelino of Where Parents Talk speaks to Canadian Football League (CFL) Hall of Fame quarterback, Anthony Calvillo, about being a dad, growing up in an abusive household and how growing up with an alcoholic parent helped shaped him as a father.
Led by veteran quarterback Damon Allen and a two-headed backfield monster of Sean Millington and Robert Drummond, the Cinderella story of 2000 was completed with a two-point victory by B.C. over heavily-favored Montreal. Allen rushed for two touchdowns, while Drummond's 44-yard scamper early in the fourth quarter forced Anthony Calvillo and the Alouettes to play comeback. And they almost did. After Calvillo hit Ben Cahoon for a 59-yard major in the final minute, his two-point convert attempt sailed incomplete and the Lions escaped for their fourth title in club history.
During his 19-year CFL career, Anthony Calvillo never talked a lot about his past. It was known the Canadian Football League's all-time passing leader grew up in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles and that he chose football over a life of street gang crime, but over the years he gave few details of just how difficult it was. Director Shelley Saywell's documentary “The Kid From La Puente” shows both the horrifying and uplifting aspects of the star quarterback's upbringing that he had kept mostly to himself. It features a boy growing up in La Puente, a crime-ridden, mostly Hispanic community east of Los Angeles, with a violent, alcoholic father and an older brother David who was drawn into a street gang and later jailed for attempted murder.
As a child, Anthony Calvillo absorbed himself in sport. Whether it be baseball, basketball, track and field or football, sport provided Anthony with an escape from a troubling home environment that was plagued by domestic violence and alcoholism. He grew up in a tough neighborhood about 20-minutes from central Los Angeles and knew that choosing sport over a life of street gang crime was his only way out. The natural gifts and abilities that Anthony possessed allowed him to thrive in sport, giving him the confidence needed to think bigger and have a dream of playing football at the college level. Through the support of important mentors in his life, Anthony knew that playing elite level sport was a way that he could have a better life. The path he took led him to be the starting quarterback at Utah State. It was here at Utah State, where Anthony was mentored by his quarterback coach, Jim Zorn, the well-known left-handed QB who led the Seattle Seahawk offense for 8 seasons in the NFL. The outstanding success he had at Utah State led directly to a career in the CFL. Little did Anthony know it at the time but he would go on to play 20 seasons in the Canadian football League to become the league's all-time leader in passing yardage at 79,816 yards, all-time leader in touchdowns thrown with 455 TD passes, He won Grey Cup championship 3 times and was voted the CFL's most outstanding player 3 times which ties him for second behind Doug Flutie. As you listen to this episode, you will hear firsthand from Anthony, the way he approached the game and the physical and mental preparation he committed himself to throughout his career to improve and get better each season. Anthony admits that at certain points in his career, he had to hold the mirror up to himself in order to identify exactly what he needed to focus on to continue to show up and be the best version of himself possible to help guide and lead the Montreal Alouettes to greatness in the CFL. What defines Anthony the most in my opinion is not the records he holds, his Grey Cup wins, or his MVP awards, but more so his resilient spirit and his ability to overcome hardship and adversity in his life to carve out his own path of greatness. What we don't talk about in this episode is the struggles that both he and his wife battled in overcoming cancer. This experience helped Anthony and his family to recognize what is most important in life- love, connection, and living with authenticity and purpose. The work that Anthony has done raising awareness about domestic violence is hugely important and he's using his voice and platform to shed light on this issue in order to make a difference. It's rare that we can get such a glimpse into the mindset of a champion. So many lessons shared in this episode. I hope you enjoy it.Connect With AnthonyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/anthonycalvillo13/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/acalvillo13?lang=en

This week I have the pleasure of bringing CFL Legend Anthony Calvillo onto the podcast. For those who may not know, Anthony is a CFL Hall of Fame Quarterback, Grey Cup Champion and the all-time pro football passing yards leader. For someone who has had such an incredible career, I was extremely interested in this interview to hear Anthony's stories of as he put it "hitting rock bottom" being cut from the pros, as well as many ups and downs through his college career. What he attributed to his success in football was simple. It was a change in mindset. Early in his career feeling like if he beat a player out for a position, they had nothing to offer him, whether or not they had more experience than he did. This led to bad games, getting subbed out and ultimately getting cut. However, getting an opportunity to play in Montreal allowed Anthony a fresh start. Understanding that he had a championship level quarterback in front of him, he came in with the mindset of only wanting to learn. As soon as he was able to humble himself and LEARN from those around him, he was able to change the entire trajectory of his career and become one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game of football. The mindset he carried through the early parts of his career are common amongst many young athletes. Feeling like if you are playing for the top level team in your area, or you are being looked at by teams at the next level that means that you have nothing more to learn. Feeling like you are doing the right things and your career is on the right track. Anthony does a great job in this interview of breaking down exactly why this is not the case. Even if you are doing some things right, there is always someone out there that can help you. There is always someone out there you can learn from. Some of his best advice for young athletes today was to simply evaluate what success means to you. Are you happy being the starter on your high school team? Or do you want to make it as a pro? If you have another step you want to take in your career, be humble and don't try to simply do it on your own. Bring people in who can help you. Find coaches, mentors, etc. that can prepare you. This is the way to change the trajectory of your career in the astonishing way that Anthony Calvillo did it. Thank YOU for tuning in to another episode of The Elite Development Podcast! (https://atgridiron.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/ATG-Ben.png) Ben had an outstanding 13 year career in the Canadian Football League all with the Montreal Alouettes. He grew up playing soccer and basketball and didn’t start playing football until he got to high school. And although it wasn’t his favourite sport, he saw football as his best opportunity to earn a scholarship for college. Being a little on the smaller side, he always had to prove himself as a player. His college career started at a Junior College in Utah before going to Brigham Young University as a walk-on. He turned down scholarships at other smaller schools in choosing to go there. He knew he would get a chance to play and showcase his skills with the receiver friendly offence that they had there. That’s exactly what he did, and had a great couple of years there which earned him a first round selection by the Alouettes. He did have a brief tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that lasted 2 days. He initially struggled to establish himself with the Alouettes, playing mostly special teams. However due to injuries he got his opportunity and made the most of it. His first year he played out wide at the “z” receiver. However coach Don Matthews wanted to give him a shot at the slot receiver position. He was nervous about the move, having struggled there the few times he had an opportunity early in his career. However he excelled and developed great chemistry with another future Hall of Famer, Anthony Calvillo. They became one of the deadliest combos in CFL history. He won 3 Grey Cups with the Als, and has fond memories of them. The losses hurt maybe even more having played in many Grey Cups, but he is grateful for the victories. Especially the victory over the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the 2009 Grey Cup game. They never led in that game until the last play of the game with no time left on the clock. They fought and clawed and never gave up and persevered with the leaders of the team stepping up big for them. After football he transitioned into coaching. The timing worked out perfectly for him as he retired in 2010 and walked right into a coaching position with his alma mater, BYU. He was there for a couple years until some of the staff was let go. A few years later he was hired again by the team and lasted another 2 years until being let go again. From there he decided to move into the business world and is now working for G2G, or Good to Go. They are a protein bar company based out of Utah and he is running the Canadian division. They have just recently launched in Canada and is available in certain areas. It is a refrigerated protein bar which is unique to Canada. It is used by many college and pro teams and they are looking to grow their market share in the highly competitive market.
