He and his four siblings grew up in and around the food service industry. In 1989, His father founded and opened Chelino's Mexican Restaurant. During his Junior and Senior years, Guadalupe attended Metro Technology Centers for Automotive Refinishing. Guadalupe enjoyed and excelled in the classroom, going on to win the SkillsUSA competition in 2012. After graduating high school, Guadalupe decided he would work in the family business. Welcome back to another episode of Let's Taco About It and this week we bring back a conversation we were lucky enough to have with non other than UFC fighter Cynthia Calvillo! This episode was recorded back on May 29th or 2021.

In this episode we're joined by Jesse Calvillo, a content creator who makes comedic skits on social media often with his family. Jesse shares on his journey with addiction, being a self proclaimed "try everything at once" kind of guy which eventually spiralled down a path of heroin addiction. He openly shares on his escapades, from entering rehab and only learning it was better to shoot up heroin than smoke it, getting into trouble with the law to overdosing and crashing his mother's car on an abandoned highway, he was left with the choice of jail or entering a sobriety program. Whilst the program was challenging and incredibly strict, including spending several days in jail for failed drug tests, Jesse completed the 18 month program and stayed off heroin for good, despite it being in his words the best feeling he's ever experienced, with help and support getting involved in AA and completing the steps. He elaborates on his journey with sobriety, having a good level of conscious self awareness to keep an eye on his participating in taking substances is potentially a gateway back to the needle. Jesse and Will reflect on their past being creators on the original video app Vine, creating comedic content with his family contributing to a deeper bond with his brothers. He talks on his struggles with physical therapy and social anxiety and taking life one day at a time and being strong for yourself despite his physical limitations. RFI entrevistó a José Miguel Calvillo Cisneros, profesor de Relaciones Internacionales en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y autor de 'Afganistán, un conflicto permanente' (Ediciones Trea, España) con ocasión de la publicación de un informe de la agencia antidrogas de la ONU según el cual la superficie de cultivos de amapola en Afganistán ha aumentado un 32%. Los productores de opio en Afganistán llegan a un punto crucial para sus cultivos de amapola de opio. Tras una cosecha récord -la tercera más importante desde que Naciones Unidas evalúa esta producción- llega el mes de noviembre y es tiempo de decidir si vuelven a sembrar esta planta que sirve para la producción de la heroína. Sin embargo, los talibanes prohibieron la producción de esta planta en abril pasado, aunque sin obligar a los campesinos a destruir las cosechas en curso. Según un nuevo informe publicado el martes por la ONU (PDF en inglés), los cultivos de amapola de opio aumentaron un 32% en un año en Afganistán. "Actualmente esos cultivos llegan a 223.000 hectáreas", alerta la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas contra la Droga y el Delito (ONUDC). Los precios del opio "se dispararon" desde que los talibanes prohibieron la plantación de esta flor en abril de 2022, agrega la ONUDC. "La historia se repite porque esta política fue la misma que emprendieron los talibanes a finales de la década de los 90 y a principios del siglo XXI prohibiendo la producción del opio, pero realmente como una estrategia para controlar los precios", recuerda el profesor José Miguel Calvillo Cisneros. "Si vemos el informe de las Naciones Unidas, los precios de los opiáceos procedentes de Afganistán han aumentado en la misma proporción que la producción, aproximadamente un 30%. Realmente lo que quieren los talibanes es controlar los precios. Desde el punto de vista de su comunicación, ellos dicen que prohíben la producción, pero realmente lo que están haciendo es acumular el excedente. En el momento en que vuelvan a poner el producto en circulación, los precios habrán aumentado mucho debido a que Afganistán tiene el monopolio del opio a nivel mundial: aproximadamente el 90% del opio ilegal que hay en el mercado proviene de ese país", explica Calvillo a RFI. En efecto, según el informe de Naciones Unidas, el precio de la tonelada de opio pasó de 120 a 200 dólares el kilo tras la prohibición. Siguiendo la misma tendencia, los ingresos de los campesinos que cultivan esta planta se han triplicado, pasando de 425 millones de dólares en 2021 americanos a 1400 millones en 2022, según estima la ONU. Sin embargo, los campesinos afganos no han cosechado los frutos de estas ganancias. "Los precios de los alimentos aumentaron en un 35% durante en mismo periodo. Y la población pobre gasta el 60 o 70% de su ingreso para alimentarse", apuntan los autores del informe. "La alta inflación hace que aunque se haya aumentado el precio del productos, los ingresos netos del agricultor se mantienen prácticamente en los mismos niveles que antes de la subida de los precios. Por otro lado, como todos los agricultores, han sufrido de la subida de la materia prima para la producción de los opiáceos", observa José Miguel Calvillo. Además, "el agricultor en Afganistán suele ser el eslabón más débil y pobre de toda esta cadena. Los cultivos siguen estando muy controlados por el movimiento talibán. Y también por el Estado Islámico en el sureste del país, que se beneficia de este comercio", agrega. En este contexto, el investigador estima poco probable que los talibanes apliquen realmente la prohibición de la amapola de opio. "Creo que en la práctica no se va a aplicar. Con la endémica crisis alimentaria y la situación económica que vive el país, erradicar el cultivo dejaría a miles de agricultores prácticamente sin ningún tipo de ingreso. Por otro lado, si se erradicada el cultivo, el movimiento talibán renunciaría a su modelo de financiación, bien por la producción o por la vía de los impuestos que mantienen a los agricultores". El cultivo de la amapola fue brevemente prohibido en el año 2000 por los talibanes, pero durante sus 20 años de guerrilla contra las fuerzas extranjeras lo convirtieron en una importante fuertes de ingresos recaudando impuestos de los agricultores en las zonas bajo su control. Durante su presencia en Afganistán, Estados Unidos y la OTAN intentaron convencer a los locales de producir trigo o azafrán, pero las principales zonas de cultivo de amapola estaban bajo poder talibán.
