Arietta Ward: Looking forward to another 400 episodes of Coffeeshop Conversations @ Artichoke Music by Oregon Music News
This is the four hundredth episode of Coffeeshop Conversations. Next week will be four hundred and one. There are times in our lives that call for courage and inspiration. Our guest today, pianist Dave Fleschner is fresh out of rehab. His story is full of both. Our guest next week is Arietta Ward who is known and loved for bringing the light of inspiration even though deep down she's a shy person. I just had back surgery which brought me over a hundred good wishes. So it's a special time around the coffeeshop at the Café in Artichoke. Here's episode number four hundred with Dave Fleschner.
One of my favorite Coffeeshop Conversations guests is here again. She's Sarah Tiedemann, Third Angle New Music's Artistic Director, and also a flutist. Third Angle's exciting new season is already underway and Sarah will tell us all about it. Our next two episodes are special…this one is too, but we're marking episodes 400 and 401 with a very personal story from Dave Fleschner about recovery...that's 400 and an inspiring look to the future from MizEtta, Arietta Ward. But first, let's welcome back Sarah Tiedemann.
Welcome back to the Café at Artichoke Music. Wanted you to know that next week Darka Dusty will be here to talk about all things Ukranian (including music). Today we have light in the Café and it's brought to us as she brings it to everywhere she goes…it's MizEtta….Arietta Ward. If you've been in the Portland music scene for any length of time you saw her grow up…the daughter to our beloved Janice Scroggins. But she stepped out of her mom's shadow a long time ago. She's just back from Europe….and that is a story in itself. Several stories. December is Ettabration month with a birthday show at the Alberta Street Pub on Thursday the eighth. Welcome back Arietta Ward.
Coming up next week here in the Artichoke Café, MizEtta, Arietta Ward, and the following week Darka Dusty will be here to talk about Ukraine and a lot more. We're on a great run of Coffeeshop Conversations. Last time it was Jeremy Wilson and today it's pianist/composer Kerry Politzer who has a new album on Portland's PJCE label. It's called In a Heartbeat and features an all-star band which includes her husband George Colligan on drums. She'll talk about the rest of the band why the album is called In a Heartbeat, and you can hear the title track when we're done talking. Kerry also teaches music and we'll get into that too. This terrific run of Coffeeshop Conversations @ Artichoke rolls on.
Next week Miz Etta, Arietta Ward will be here in the Artichoke Café with me to tell us about her European tour. The week after, composer, pianist Kerry Politzer about her new album. You'll like them. Today Jeremy Wilson who you know as an Oregon Music Hall of fame inductee for his long career which, of course includes the Dharma Bums. He's also known for starting the Jeremy Wilson Foundation which gives money to people in the music industry who are in need. It's a great service which has leant a hand to many of our finest musicians. Find out about it and the annual upcoming benefit concerts, the Next Waltz.
We've got some exciting Coffeeshop Conversations coming up. In the next three weeks we'll have Jeremy Wilson, Miz Etta, Arietta Ward and also pianist Kerry Politzer in the Artichoke Café. Today James Latham is here with me. He's the mastermind behind the Tom Waits tribute show on Sunday, November 6 at the Alberta Rose Theater. We'll find out the lineup of Portland singers and players who are tackling the Tom Waits canon. It's a benefit concert, too. How does something like this happen? He'll tell us why and how. Meet James Latham.
No matter what, we don't stop the flow around here family. In this episode, we get it in with new music from LA's own Moonchild, featuring the legendary Ms. Lalah Hathaway. We also give you new music from London's own, and one of our favorites, Lukas Setto. This brother comes with the goodies. We drop in a gem from the "Bespeak: Empowerment" LP by the lovely Arietta Ward. Then, as if it can't get any better with new music, we drop in the latest from Silk Sonic, and we round it all out with new music from our brother, and friend, Philly soul man Ashley Scott. Oh yeah, did we mention that we still have the classics? We get it in with the classics from Rufus & Chaka Khan, The Gap Band, Chic', The Bar Kays, and the list goes on and on. NW vocal powerhouse Arietta Ward has assembled some of the finest Musical Artisans to help her spread Soul, Funk, R&B, and positivity to the masses along with her journey founding and fronting her own band,Mz. Etta’s World. Her diverse musical background and versatility have allowed her to be able to perform in various configurations with many artists such as Esperanza Spalding, the late West African Master Drummer Obo Addy, Linda Hornbuckle, Curtis Salgado, Tony Ozier, Tyrone Hendrix, Farnell Newton as well as starting out with her beloved mother, famed NW legend, late pianist, Janice Marie Scroggins. While many labels of music exist, Arietta doesn’t define herself by any particular genre. Some would call her Neo-Soul/Blues, others Funk, and still others R&B. Back for your ears-only this time. Our next video episode is on the way with Rebecca Sanborn and Ji Tanzer. Today it’s one of our favorite people. She led an all-star band at the recent OMN 10th Anniversary show. She is a member of one of families of musical royalty around here. She’s Janice Scroggins daughter, singer and composer Arietta Ward, a true, sure-nuff Soul singer, although she can sing in virtually any genre. We’ll talk about that all-star band, her surprising reluctance, at first, to perform in public and what brought her to the spectacular public performer she is today. And what role did her mom play in all this? I’ll give you a heads-up….it was a very positive role. Check out her performance at the 2019 Waterfront Blues Festival at the end of our conversation. She’s a singular personality…meet Arietta Ward.

Hey, before we get to our guest, Neil Leeborg from the Goodfoot Lounge, I want to tell you that next week we’ll have our third video episode, another spousal unit: Shelly Rudolph and Chance Hayden. They’ll be performing too. That’s right here at Artichoke Music, in the Café 2007 SE Powell Boulevard. We like to bring venue owners in from time to time to hear their side of it. Just kidding. I’ve wanted to bring in Neil Leeborg, co-owner of the Goodfoot Lounge because he’s always been fun to communicate with, one way or the other. It was just a coincidence that the OMN staffer who was booking our 10th Anniversary Show contacted Neil to see about having it there around the same time I was contacting Neil. It's a small town. Anyway that's where it's going to be on Sunday, October 20, 5-9pm featuring Ken DeRouchie Band, Arietta Ward and Metts Ryan & Collins. I'll DJ some too. It's free. Neil claims he has never been interviewed. I told him it’s a conversation, so it’s ok. Ladies and gentlemen, for the first tme anywhere, Neil Leeborg.

April 16, 2015 Tony Ozier is the King of Doo Doo Funk, the Monarch of the Dookie Jam, and is also known as Dookie Green. And he is one of the busiest music producers in Oregon -- about to unleash a new album of Funk-related material on us (due in May) called Speed of Sound, in addition to working on a new album from Janice Scroggins’ daughter, Arietta Ward, among others, and producing tunes on Farnell Newton’s new album. Listen to one below. I wrote the first story on the Dookie Jam in 2007…it’s still going strong every month. And here he is again!
