Today I am excited and honored to be talking with Dr. Shamell Bell and Sherena Razek, two activist scholars who join us to talk about their work on the Coalition for Action in Higher Education, which will be convening it Third Annual National Day of Action (insert link) on April 17th. We talk about the unique and central position CAHE occupies on the activist landscape. The Coalition brings together labor, anti-fascist and anti-racist activists, and those working for Palestinian freedom. CAHE energizes the educational sphere by refusing to shy away from taking radical positions, by embracing boundary-crossing and close affiliations with diverse communities, by defending the most vulnerable, and insisting on free education in every sense of the word. CAHE aims to both hold university administrators and trustees accountable, but also to recognize and grow our own strength with imagination, creativity, and mutual care.Dr. Shamell Bell is a global movement artist, scholar, and visionary cultural strategist whose work lives at the intersection of radical imagination, embodied activism, and unconditional love. She earned her Ph.D. in Culture and Performance from UCLA and recently completed a teaching appointment in Theater, Dance & Media at Harvard University. As an interdisciplinary scholar and documentary filmmaker, Dr. Bell explores the power of embodiment, collective freedom dreaming, and multimedia storytelling to disrupt oppressive systems and ignite transformation. Her social impact work in the entertainment industry includes collaborations with artists such as Common, Dominique Fishback, Lalah Hathaway, and Esperanza Spalding. She also served as Supervising Producer on the Emmy-nominated series Lessons in Chemistry. Dr. Bell is co-social impact director—alongside Ms. Gwen Carr, mother of Eric Garner—for Ritual of Breath is the Rite to Resist, a performance project responding to state-sanctioned violence. She organizes for economic justice with the Debt Collective as its Visionary Escalator, advocating for student debt abolition and debt-free college for all. She also serves on the steering committee for the Coalition for Action in Higher Education and co-chairs their Antifascism caucus.Sherena Razek is a diasporic Palestinian feminist educator, scholar, activist, and labor organizer. Currently, she is a President's and Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Gender Studies at the University of California Los Angeles. She holds a PhD from the Department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University where she was the President of the Graduate Labor Organization and co-founder of the Palestine Solidarity Caucus. Her research focuses on Palestinian visual culture, anti-imperialist struggle, and decolonial feminist ecologies.

I had a chance to catch up with veteran studio legend Steve Sykes and he shared a lot of cool stories and studio tips in this interview. We had a blast! His advice for young people starting in the business is straight inside scoop and he shares it towards the end of this video.Steve's knowledge of diverse musical styles is demonstrated in his wide list of credits which include many Latin artists. He has worked with superstars Enrique Iglesias, Luis Fonsi and Cristian Castro, Puerto Rican songstress Ednita Nazario, Thalía, Maria Conchita Alonso and Argentinian ska rockers “Los Fabulosos Cadillacs”. Many of these albums went gold or platinum. After mixing a couple of albums for platinum selling Spanish rock band Seguridad Social, they asked him to come to Spain to produce an album. That collaboration resulted in the hit album “Camino Vertical”. A year later, Steve again headed to Spain to produce another album for the band, “Va Por Ti”. His international projects also include many for Japanese clients and he has made numerous trips to Japan to record and mix. Among his Japanese projects are the number one hit and platinum album “Love Again” for popular band Globe and teenage superstar Rie Miyazawa's first album. Steve won a Japanese recording award for his work on Mari Ijima's album “Good Medicine” in 1996. Recently Steve mixed a best of album for Italian star Umberto Tozzi with producer Greg Mathieson. Other musical genres Steve has worked in extensively are jazz and smooth jazz. He has recorded and mixed for most of the major artists on the smooth jazz charts including multiple albums for artists including The Rippingtons, David Benoit, Mindi Abair, Rick Braun, Jeff Golub, Wayman Tisdale, Peter White, Paul Taylor, Everette Harp, Brian Culbertson, Diane Schuur, Eric Marienthal and Warren Hill. He mixed an album for reggae group Black Uhuru which went to the top of the Billboard World Music charts. He recorded tracks for two albums by Lalah Hathaway, both of which had hit singles on the Adult R&B and Hot R&B charts. Steve recorded and mixed the reunion album for jazz fusion band Seawind. He recorded and mixed two albums for singer Miki Howard. “Miki Sings Billie” was her tribute album to legendary jazz vocalist Billie Holiday and featured full orchestra recordings by Steve at Capitol Studios. In 2008, Steve recorded and mixed Al Jarreau's top Contemporary Jazz Christmas album “Christmas”. Recently Steve has recorded tracks for celebrity DJ “DJ Cassidy”, whose first single “Calling All Hearts” features Robin Thicke and Jessie J. Cassidy's album “Paradise Royale” hosts a who's who of the hottest studio musicians and performers in the world including drummer John “JR” Robinson, guitarists Paul Jackson Jr and Nile Rodgers, bassists Marcus Miller, Freddie Washington, Verdine White and Bobby Watson. Among the performers on this album were Larry Dunn and Philip Bailey, thus reuniting Steve with his former band mates. This time Steve was the engineer and not the guitar player. In an issue of Electronic Musician magazine, Steve gives an in depth interview where he explains some of the recording techniques, studios and equipment he used in the making of this album.Find out more about steve at his website https://www.stevesykes.comFor video episodes and more visit Rob's channel at https://youtube.com/planetmullins

Ravi Coltrane with Marcus MillerMarcus Miller interviews Ravi Coltrane about his musical evolution and the dual legacy of his parents, Alice and John Coltrane. This insightful and candid talk, recorded live on the Journey of Jazz cruise, covers the challenges of growing up under the shadow of a jazz icon and finding one's own voice through the music.Key TakeawaysThe episode is a conversation between host Marcus Miller and guest Ravi Coltrane, focusing on Ravi's development as a jazz saxophonist.Ravi's father, John Coltrane, passed away in 1967 when Ravi was 2 years old, leaving Ravi to be raised by his mother, Alice Coltrane. Ravi notes that his father's instruments are currently in his stateroom.Ravi began his musical journey playing the clarinet throughout junior high and high school. He switched to the soprano saxophone at age 16 after his mother gave it to him for his birthday as a hint, later moving to the tenor saxophone.Ravi did not initially feel pressure from his famous last name because, during the 1970s in the San Fernando Valley where he grew up, John Coltrane was still considered "underground" or "counter culture".The death of Ravi's older brother, John Jr., in an automobile accident when Ravi was 17, caused a "void" that Ravi later filled by studying his father's music. Ravi began listening to his father's records to gain answers for questions asked at parties, and through this, the music "hit" him.Ravi worked with key members of the John Coltrane Quartet, including joining drummer Elvin Jones's band in 1991 (though he felt he was "prematurely" ready) and later working with pianist McCoy Tyner in the 2000s.Ravi and Marcus discuss the meaning of being "ready" to perform at a high level, noting that it means being "prepared to do the job properly" and recognizing that evolution and learning are continuous processes.Host and Guest InfoHost: Lee Mergner (introduction), Marcus Miller (interview).Guest: Ravi Coltrane. This talk was recorded during the Journey of Jazz cruise. Marcus Miller provided the theme music, which is a clip from his song "High Life" on his album Aphrodesia on Blue Note. The talk was captured by Brian Ratchkco and his production team.Send us a text

Originally born in South Dakota, David Dyson and his family relocated to Washington D.C. when he was just 2 years old. While attending public school in D.C. he began playing the baritone and was acknowledged for his budding talent. However at the age of 12, after hearing LArry graham play bass, the urge was (understandably) too strong and the baritone was replaced with a beginner's bass guitar that his parents bought for him. That gift set off a brilliant music career with David rapidly excelling at his new instrument and being named "band member" of the year in his high school band. Send us a textEpisode 140. Peter Lord, visionary artist, trailblazing songwriter, and founding member of the genre-defying collective The Family Stand, returns with "BOOM," the explosive first single from his long-awaited solo album, "Songs From The 8th Dimension," set for release this fall."BOOM" isn't just a track, it's a warning shot from the edge of memory and the future. Fusing urgent lyricism, cinematic sonics, and Lord's signature genre-bending style, the single delivers a raw and prophetic energy that resonates in today's chaotic world."We forgot the lessons learned… and then… it all went… BOOM."A bold declaration from an artist who's never played it safe.Peter Lord has shaped the sound of generations. As a member of The Family Stand, he helped craft genre-defiant classics like "Chain," "Moon in Scorpio," and "Connected," and delivered the timeless anthem "Ghetto Heaven" - a chart-topping call to consciousness that still resonates. Behind the scenes, he has penned over 600 songs recorded by some of music's elite: Paula Abdul, Nicki Minaj, Common, D'Angelo, Corey Glover, Daryl Hall, Lalah Hathaway, Tamia, Heather Headly, Macy Gray, and many more. Whether on the stage or in the studio, his voice has always spoken truth wrapped in rhythm. Now, with "BOOM," Peter Lord steps fully into the spotlight with the first track from his album - solo, but never alone. "Songs from the 8th Dimension," due this fall, is an interstellar voyage through time, soul, and sound. Deep, fearless, and unapologetically original, it's a sonic manifesto from a master still evolving."BOOM" drops on July 4, and the album lands fall 2025. Episode 113- Join host Troy Saunders as he converses the guitarist, songwriter, singer, producer, mixer, engineer, entrepreneur and so much more David P. Stevens. The episode begins with a brief and light hearted conversation on David's early life in Philadelphia. He is the youngest of 4 children, who's parents both were educators and his father was the Pastor their church. David's father also had a funk band in which David's older siblings were members. He was too young to join, but this influenced David to start playing the guitar and sing. David explains his many moves in life from living in Nashville, Detroit, Philadelphia and eventually Los Angeles. Each move was to accomplish and new goal. Did you know that David's first album was a gospel album, released in 1999? It is no longer available for streaming. Troy and David discussed the reason for its unavailability and the possibility of re-releasing it.Through out the conversation Troy goes through David's vast catalog of music highlighting songs that touched him and or David. He started with David's first jazz release in 2005; the album "Timeless". They grooved to the title track. Another song featured was a beautiful song called "I Need You" which featured both David and Mitchell Jones of Commissioned. David tells how this collaboration came to be and how it was one of the highlights of his career so far. David's collaborations span the who's who's in music including Frank McComb, Maysa, Gerald Albright, Najee, Will Downing, LaToya Luckett, Carol Riddick (their collaboration "Love Is Still in Style" is also featured in this episode) Lin Rountree, Carl Cox, Steve Cole and sooo many more. David inspires to work with even more artist across all genres. Some the artists on his wish list include Ledisi, Deborah Cox, Barbra Streisand, James Taylor, Lalah Hathaway and more. Of course this episode would not have been complete without talking about David's latest album "Go". David once said that his album "Rouge" was his favorite release; but I think that "Go" has him changing his mind. The whole album is a masterpiece, so it was hard for Troy to pick which songs to highlight. He started with the jazzy remake of Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Love Come Down" with Erin Stevenson on vocals. Evelyn is the blueprint; but David did a great job reinventing this R&B classic. Then Troy switched gears and played "Cozy"; a nod to the the great classic R&B slow jams from the 1980's. Another selection played was "Journey Home" which is bound to be a smooth jazz classic. For the next two songs Troy enlisted help from David; asking what were his favorites off of the album. David suggests "East Meets West" ( an old Norman Brown, one of David's influences, hit) and "Might As Well" ( A tune the starts off as a smooth jazz classic and by the end you are in the middle of a full gospel experience. They ended the episode with the latest single "Go" which features the man himself on vocals. This song is at home on any R&B station as well as on smooth jazz formats. David has a new video premiering on September 3 for this single. It will showcase David's acting, scoring and production skills. Look out for the premier on YouTube. This conversation covered so many topics. Too many to type here. Just tune in to hear more. Not only was the music incredible in this episode; but the conversation was filled with passion. These two men love what they do and it shows. Don't miss this uplifting and joyful conversation.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa.
