You will be raiding your vegetable garden (or the farmstand or produce department) when you make this soup! And it is the shopping that takes the time. The soup itself is a breeze to put together. If you have homemade chicken broth, by all means use it. Otherwise, choose a good-quality canned broth, not too salty, so that the flavor of each of the many vegetables shines. And while we would like to suggest reserving this for the next day it is vegetable soup, after all, we don't recommend it. The orzo becomes waterlogged, and the vegetables are no longer al dente, either.

Replacing Life's Bitter Ingredients. In this episode, Dr. Cheryl Peavy explores the analogy of "bad vegetable soup" to describe the negative experiences and traumas we carry through life. Using the story of Jephthah, she illustrates how we often accept these bitter ingredients as our portion. Dr. Peavy challenges us to throw out the old, unhealthy soup and create a new recipe filled with forgiveness, purpose, and a deeper relationship with God. This episode is about letting go of what's holding you back and embracing the abundant life God has for you.

The Proper Way To Extract the Broth From Vegetables in a Vegetable Soup on Shabbat

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2024

Many people enjoy soup on Friday night, whether it's vegetable soup, chicken soup, or "kibbehamda" which contains meatballs and vegetables. Often, a person prefers eating only the broth, without vegetables. The question arises as to how he can separate the vegetables from the broth without violating the Shabbat prohibition of "Borer," which forbids separating "Pesolet" (unwanted food) from "Ochel" (the food which one wants). In our case, the vegetables, which the individual does not want to eat, is considered the "Pesolet," and the broth is considered the "Ochel." It is thus forbidden for him to remove the vegetables from a bowl o soup, as this would transgress the prohibition of "Borer." The solution in such a case is to insert a large spoon or ladle into the bowl of soup, lift out of the bowl whatever happens to enter the ladle, and then carefully pour the broth from the ladle into one's bowl, without allowing the vegetables to be poured. This is permissible on Shabbat because the "Borer" prohibition forbids only removing "'Pesolet" from "Ochel." Separating in the opposite manner – removing "Ochel" from "Pesolet" – is permissible, provided that one does not use a utensil for this purpose. A spoon or ladle is considered an extension of one's hand, rather than a separate utensil, for the purposes of this Halacha (unless it is a spoon with holes to separate liquid from solid, in which case it may not be used on Shabbat). Therefore, it is permissible to use a spoon to separate the broth – the "Ochel" – from the vegetables – the "Pesolet." However, although it is permissible to separate the broth from the vegetables with a spoon, it is forbidden to press the back of the spoon down on the vegetables so that only liquid collects in the spoon. Since the back of the spoon is not normally used for eating, it would be considered a "utensil" with respect to the Halacha of "Borer," and it may therefore not be used for separating foods, in any manner. It goes without saying that if the vegetables have sunk to the bottom of the bowl, and on the top there is only broth, then one may simply take broth from the top of the bowl with a spoon or ladle. Summary: If a person has a bowl or pot of soup with vegetables, and he wants only broth but not vegetables, he should insert a large spoon or ladle (that does not have holes), remove from the bowl or pot whatever happens to enter the spoon, and then carefully pour the broth out of the spoon into his bowl, without the vegetables. He may not remove the vegetables from the bowl, or push down with the back of the spoon on the vegetables so that only broth enters the spoon. If the vegetables are all at the bottom of the pot, then he may simply remove some broth from the top.

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

The laws concerning the recitation of Berachot when eating vegetable soup depend on how the soup was prepared:1) If the soup consists only of liquid which was boiled with vegetables to absorb their flavor, after which the vegetables were removed, one recites the Beracha of "She'hakol." Since one drinks only liquid, no Beracha other than "She'hakol" is required.2) If, however, the vegetables were left in the soup, and thus one eats both broth and vegetables, he must recite two Berachot: "Borei Peri Ha'adama" on the vegetables, followed by "She'hakol" on the broth. Although normally when foods are eaten together one recites only the Beracha over the majority food, this Halacha applies only when the foods are mixed together. In a vegetable soup, however, the vegetables and liquid remain as separate entities, and do not blend into a mixture. Therefore, one must recite separate Berachot over the vegetables and over the soup. This is the ruling of Rabbi Moshe Halevi, in his work Birkat Hashem (vol. 3, 10:41).3) Finally, if the vegetables were left in the soup but were diced, such that each spoonful will likely contain both liquid and vegetables, then we indeed treat the soup as a mixture of vegetable and broth. As such, the Beracha is determined based on the majority component: if the soup contains more broth than vegetables, then one recites "She'hakol"; if the soup contains more vegetables than broth, one must recite "Borei Peri Ha'adama." Since this soup is treated as a mixture, the Beracha is determined based on the majority component.Summary: The Beracha over vegetable soup consisting of only liquid is "She'hakol." If the soup contains pieces of vegetables, then one recites "Ha'adama" over the vegetables and "She'hakol" over the liquid. If the vegetables are diced such that each spoonful contains both liquid and vegetables, then one recites "Ha'adama" if there are more vegetables than liquid, and "She'hakol" if there is more liquid than vegetables.

For this easy vegetarian minestrone soup recipe, we included pearl barley – a hearty grain that's often overlooked in grocery shops. However, it happens to be an excellent source of carbs and fibre, as well as aiding blood sugar control and improving circulation. Pearl Barley Minestrone Soup Minestrone is a chunky vegetable soup that originated in Italy many centuries ago. It usually features a wide variety of seasonal vegetables, as well as beans, pasta, or rice. 5 from 1 vote Print Recipe Pin Recipe Prep Time 10 mins Cook Time 30 mins Course Soup Cuisine Italian Servings 6 Calories 254 kcal Equipment Large pot Spatula Chopping Board Knife Can opener Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 1 brown onion peeled, diced 4 cloves garlic peeled, minced 1 carrot sliced or chopped 1 stalk celery 1 red pepper seeds removed, chopped 1 courgette chopped 2 medium potatoes peeled or washed, chopped 1 can chopped tomatoes ½ can red kidney beans drained and rinsed 100 g pearl barley 2 l vegetable stock 150 ml pickle juice optional 3-4 bay leaves Salt and pepper to taste Instructions Prep all of your veggies and canned products. Heat the oil in the pot over medium heat. Add onion and garlic to the pot. Cook for about 4-5 minutes, stirring regularly. Wait for the onion to start turning translucent. Add carrots, pepper, celery and potatoes. Keep cooking for another 5 minutes. Add tomatoes, beans, pearl barley, vegetable stock, pickle juice (if using), and bay leaves. Bring your soup to boil and simmer for about 25 minutes. Check that potatoes and pearl barley are cooked. Taste your soup and add salt and pepper as needed. Remove bay leaves before serving. Notes You can use store-bought vegetable stock or make your own at home. Depending on its salt content, you might not even need to add any extra salt at the end. Pearl barley contains gluten, so for a gluten-free minestrone, feel free to use brown rice or a small variety of gluten-free pasta. Marlene Dietrich and Cary Grant? No, Marlene Dietrich and Herbert Marshall? Marlene and a cute little kid? Marlene in the Deep South? This movie will surprise you. IT is part of the cycle of films she made with Josef von Sternberg during her early American career. And our heroine goes through A LOT. I’d argue it’s among Dietrich’s most sympathetic roles. In this episode, I find myself arguing with my panelists about the worthiness of this movie! Host Shelly Brisbin with David J. Loehr and Nathan Alderman.

In this episode of The SavvyCast podcast, I share my recipe and tips + tricks for this Spicy Hamburger Vegetable Soup. It is a crowd-pleasing soup that your family will love!!!   Some recipes are better "talked through" over the fence, on the phone, or in person. This spicy hamburger vegetable soup is one of those recipes, so I decided to talk through it on this episode of The SavvyCast. If you don't want to listen, you can jump straight to the recipe on this blogpost with the recipe.   Soup weather is here, so I decided to "talk through" one of my favorite soups and most popular recipes~Spicy Hamburger Vegetable Soup. It is a hearty, savory, meat & potatoes soup that gets a spicy kick with some of my secret ingredients. Link to the Spicy Hamburger Vegetable Soup  The Best Spicy Hamburger Vegetable Soup Ever! Tips I Share on making Spicy Hamburger Vegetable Soup Exactly how to brown the "hamburger meat"  for the best flavor & color. How and why it is best to saute onion separately (not with the ground beef). How to make your beef broth richer with beef bouillon or beef base. My favorite potato hack for this recipe and how it keeps your from peeling & cutting potatoes. Why potatoes and carrots should always be "steamed to tender" before adding to any soup. My favorite ways to steam potatoes and carrots. My favorite way to eat this soup. Canned green beans vs frozen (I have a clear opinion). Frozen onion vs fresh? (Again, I have a clear opinion). Why long, low and slow is always best when making soup(s). Links to other soups discussed in the podcast. If you want a meatless soup that is hearty and delicious, try Grandma Grace's Vegetable Soup. My family's favorite soup of all time is this Brunswick stew made in a slow cooker. It is fabulous!! Zane's mom makes this Italian Sausage & Cheese Tortellini Soup for Christmas weekend, and it is AMAZING!!!! Please rate, review, and subscribe! I would be SO grateful if you would take a few minutes to rate, review, and subscribe to The SavvyCast on iTunes!!!! We're so amused by all those fours in this week's episode number that we turned it into a Top 4 1/2 List. So the subject is... four! Our favorite fours. (Yeah, we know. We're out of ideas.) Some of our picks are obvious - gotta go with the Fantastic Four, even if it leads to the endless debate of Human Torch vs. HERBIE the robot. And there's a four-themed cartoon, thanks to School House Rock. But as usual, the list gets weird quickly, with various "four" stuff from TV, music, games, and more. We assure you, before we're done, Frankie Valli will be shrieking in your head. Also: Obscure children's shows (you know we love Vegetable Soup), The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Whoopi Goldberg/High Feather connection, and a road trip to Woonsocket, North Dakota that hopefully will never happen. Recap: Recent Developments in Coffee

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2020 4:38

Welcome to Recap, a brief overview of recent coffee developments every two weeks from the Specialty Coffee Association, made possible with the support of DaVinci. Special Thanks to Our Sponsor, DaVinciThis episode of Recap is made possible with support from DaVinci. With its heritage in specialty coffee and expertise in trends and menu innovation, DaVinci is the beverage brand of choice for the foodservice professional. Their product range is designed to provide end-to-end solutions and support specialty coffee professionals in their mission to create inspirational beverages. Follow us at DaVinci Europe, DaVinci North America, or using #WeAreDaVinciGourmet. Two economists from the International Coffee Organization suggest that a rise in protectionist economic policies has not yet resulted in trade barriers significantly impacting the coffee sector. In a feature for Global Coffee News, Dr. Christoph Saenger and Carmen Steinmetz shared a quantitative analysis of trade interventions implemented between 2009 and 2019. The analysis compares the number of “harmful” or “protectionist” interventions, like tariffs and state loans, against “liberalizing” interventions across member countries, but does not track the impact of individual interventions on the coffee sector. The feature also notes that interventions are reported with a time-lag, with the figures for 2019 and 2020 understating the true number of policies implemented in those years, which reflect a period of increased stress on the international trade system, including the ongoing Sino-American trade war. Coffee berry borer has been discovered on the Hawaiian Island of Kaua'i for the first time. The pest, whose larvae feed on coffee beans, has devastated coffee production throughout parts of Africa and the Americas for decades. Despite strict green coffee quarantining measures in effect for Hawaii's islands, the borers have been previously found on the island of Hawai'i in 2010, the island of O'ahu in 2014, and on Maui in 2016. The island of Kaua'i is home to the largest coffee farm in the United States, Kauai Coffee, which maintains 4 million coffee trees on more than 3,000 acres. A coordinated effort to contain and manage the pest has begun as harvest season on the island—also home to several smaller commercial coffee farming and roasting operations—is already underway. Readers of the UK's popular press have been inundated with stories of the London arrival of Neguse Gemeda Mude's top-scoring lot from the inaugural Ethiopian Cup of Excellence competition, covered in Recap Episodes 10 and 12. Harrods, a luxury department store, and Difference Coffee, who specialize in producing specialty microlot capsules from rare and expensive lots, successfully bid for the top lot with a buying group featuring Japan's Maruyama Coffee and Saza Coffee, the US' Comeeter and Goodboybob Coffee, and Taiwan's Orsir Coffee. Most of the coverage from the UK's popular press is unfortunately focused solely on the price of the winning coffee as sold by Queens of Mayfair, who were granted exclusive access to some of Difference Coffee's share. Offering only 15 total servings, two of which have been purchased by media outlets reviewing the coffee, Queens of Mayfair has priced its tableside service of Neguse Gemeda Mude's coffee in a crystal wine glass at GB£50 per cup. Conversely,  two long-form accounts of challenges facing coffee's complex value-generating ecosystem and the impacts they'll have on coffee farmers were also recently released. In the Atlantic, Maryn McKenna traced the history and impact of coffee leaf rust in a story spotlighting Guatemalan farmers. Acknowledging the role of colonialism in coffee's history, the feature critically covers the historic and present role of the Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture at Texas A&M University, who are a part of the global research infrastructure working to find solutions to coffee leaf rust. Similarly, a video by VOX Atlas explores the impact of climate change on the future of coffee production with a particular focus on Colombia, featuring interviews with coffee farmers alongside historic footage of previous coffee crises. These popular media features mark a step forward in socializing the myriad impacts of the climate crisis on the complex coffee system. This episode of Recap was made possible with the support of DaVinci. If you want to dive deeper into anything you heard today, check out the links in the description of this episode. Recap will be back in two weeks' time. As this year holds a big milestone birthday for me, and I mean a really BIG one, my defining word for 2020 in my personal and professional life is----celebrate. I want to celebrate so many things this year, so that’s what we are talking about in today’s show. Let’s talk about resolutions, goals, and intentions for 2020, along with a brand-new delicious recipe.   Show Highlights:   Five themes to celebrate this year: My birthday in August-- I have cool trips planned in my quest to travel more, like Prague, Budapest, Croatia, Greece, and a cruise with my husband. A healthy planet--We need to reduce food waste and make changes to the way we shop, cook, and repurpose. My action for January is composting. (Look for a new action each month!) Simple, fast, healthy dinners--This is the #1 request I receive, and I have some great shows planned. Today’s recipe is for Easy Red Lentil and Vegetable Soup, which uses split red lentils, extra virgin olive oil, diced onion, mushrooms, minced garlic, celery seed, vegetable broth, shredded carrots, bite-sized cauliflower florets, and fresh thyme. The benefits of eating for health--Everyone is on a different diet for some reason or another. We’ll talk about these diets along with prebiotics, which feed your good gut bacteria. The power of advocacy--We want kids and families to eat healthy foods and be part of a food system that nourishes and feeds us. We’ll cover tips to becoming an advocate, along with how to read the new food labels this year.   Resources:   Black Earth Compost: https://blackearthcompost.com/ Biggest Little Farm: https://www.biggestlittlefarmmovie.com/ From Freezer to Cooker: https://thrivinghomeblog.com/from-freezer-to-cooker The Best Rotisserie Chicken Cookbook: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Rotisserie-Chicken-Cookbook-Store-Bought/dp/0778806588 Regenerative Agriculture: http://www.regenerativeagriculturedefinition.com/ Kid Food by Bettina Elias Siegel: https://www.amazon.com/Kid-Food-Challenge-Children-Processed/dp/0190862122

Hey Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com I recently visited "Key West" with my Friends Christy Haussler & Allison Willwood of Team Podcast. Team Podcast They took me all over "The Keys."  I went to some great restaurants and did some great activities. I'll be telling you about them in upcoming episodes. Today, I'm going to tell you about the Famous "Sloppy Joe's" in Key West. Sloppy Joe’s – Key West 201 Duval Street, Key West, FL 33040                             corner of Greene St since 1939                                         (305) 294-5717  Hours Daily 9:00 – 4:00am Sunday 12:00 – 4:00am   History Sometimes it’s difficult to imagine that the United States went through a period of time, when Alcohol was “prohibited” and illegal. That period of time, from January 16, 1920 (when the 18th Amendment, which banned the manufacture, transportation and sale of intoxicating liquor went into effect) until the ratification of the 21st Amendment (The Gov’t had to write another amendment to repeal the 18th Amendment) went into effect on December 5, 1933. On that same day, December 5, 1933, became the “Official beginning” of the famous Sloppy Joe’s in Key West. Joe Russell, became a legitimate saloon owner of the “Blind Pig” which served alcohol to the Key West community. The saloon changed it’s name to the “Silver Slipper,” with the addition of a Dance Floor, but that didn’t matter to the regulars who enjoyed good friends, gambling and fifteen cent whiskeys. It was Ernest Hemmingway, the famous American novelist, and patron of Russell’s bar from the start…..who encouraged Russell to change the name of the bar to “Sloppy Joe’s” Sloppy Joe’s was adopted from Jose Garcia Rio’s “Havana Club” which sold liquor and iced seafood. Because the floor was always WET with melted ice, the patrons would tease Jose….known as the American Name of  “Joe” with running a “Sloppy Place.” The  name ….”Sloppy Joe” stuck. Joe Russell migrated “Sloppy Joe’s” down the street to the now famous “201 Duval Street” on May 5, 1937, when his rent was raised to $4.00 a week from $3.00 a week and he refused to pay the rent increase. Joe Russell bought the building for $2,500. Hemmingway was a good friend of Joe Russell’s and was a frequent patron at Sloppy Joe’s until he left Key West in 1939. Today, Sloppy Joe’s operates very similar to the come-as-you-are attitude Joe Russell branded back in 1933. The restaurant, entertainment and retail divisions, compliment each other and serve the Key west community 365 days a year. You’ll find the Restaurant serves All-American favorites, with a touch of Caribbean flare. The menu is mainly comprised of Burgers, Sandwiches and Salads. “Sloppy Joe’s” is a “Favorite” Tourist attraction. The food choices in this restaurant are going to be fan-favorite “Pub Food” with daily specials. For “Healthy” eating, I have a couple of recommendations. For Salads…I would have either the “House Salad” or “Greek Salad.” Or…..I would order the grilled or blackened Chicken or Fish Sandwich and tell your waiter/waitress to “skip” the bread. The House Salad is made with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, cheddar & jack cheese and croutons. Tell your waiter or waitress to “skip” the croutons and add some “grilled” chicken or fish. You’ll pay $3 - $4 extra for the added meat. They have Balsamic Vinaigrette or Italian dressing as the “healthier” than the other salad dressing choices. Ask for your dressing on the side. The “Greek Salad” comes with Fresh Greens with a hard boiled egg, black olives, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, red onion, roasted red peppers, pepperoncini and Feta Cheese with a Greek Vinaigrette Dressing. $11.95 For this review….I had……the Peel & Eat “Key West Pink Shrimp” OMG!!! Steamed in beer & served chilled ½ lb $9.95 you get 4-5 shrimp  1lb $17.25 you get  8-10 shrimp I had the ½ pound……and I’m telling you…..Key West Pink Shrimp is the BEST Shrimp I’ve ever had! Then……my guests and I shared the famous Original “Sloppy Joe Sandwich.” Ground beef in a sweet, tomato sauce, with onions, peppers & spices.  $9.95 I had “One Bite” of the infamous sandwich…..and it took me right back to my childhood. I remember having sloppy Joe’s A LOT! Who remembers having Sloppy Joe’s as a kid? Well….Sloppy Joe’s in Key West has it down pat. Not a “Healthy” choice at all with all the sugar in their sauce and the white bun…..but….hey.. you have to have one bite…..so you can say, “I’ve eaten at the original Sloppy Joe’s in Key West.” Finally…..I had some of the “Mojo Pulled Pork Taco.” You get 3 corn or flour tortillas, filled with mojo pulled pork, grilled onions, served with Black Bean Sauce & Lime $10.50 How do you make a Mojo Pulled Pork Taco Healthy? Open the tortilla and scrape the pork, beans & onions onto you plate THEN……eat it with your Fork! You don’t need the tortillas! You do have to enjoy yourself on vacation! It’s all about using your brain Nation! You HAVE to LOOK at Menus BEFORE you walk into a restaurant…..ESPECIALLY when you are going to eat at a FAMOUS place like “Sloppy Joe’s” in Key West! You MUST stay FOCUSED! Be MINDFUL! You’re listening to some good bands, having a good time with friends or family……..It is EASY to get caught up in the moment and start eating food that’s right in front of you….like French Fries……Chips & Salsa….you know what I mean. Stay Focused and Order the House or Greek Salad with grilled chicken or fish. It will Fill you up and you’ll be eating Healthy AND you’ll have a good time! The ENTERTAINMENT is top notch at Sloppy Joe’s. Bands from all over play at Sloppy Joe’s from noon till late into the morning. I had the pleasure of listening to “for Pete’s Sake” who played some good covers, like “Hotel California” which is one of my favorites! You can check out the Entertainment calendar on Sloppy Joe’s Website. https://goo.gl/qfPFNP They have an Annual “Hemmingway Look Alike” Contest, where white bearded men come from all over the world to honor our beloved author’s birthday. This year, the 38th Annual contest runs from July  19 – July 22nd They will even have representatives from the Hemmingway look-alike society on hand, to sign up new members. The website is  www.papalookalikes.com    The retail store has lots of “Sloppy Joe” merchandise. You can buy Tee Shirts, Glassware, Party Supplies and other Souvenirs. Check out the online store. I have the link for you.  https://store.sloppyjoes.com/   Time to Rate Sloppy Joe’s!   Remember…..1 Avocado means the Restaurant was “Ehhh”…..so it was “Fair.” 2 Avocados means the restaurant was “Good” just not Awesome. It was missing the mark on the service provided or the atmosphere, not enough healthy foods….  and finally….. “3”  Avocados means you are going to have a “GREAT” Restaurant Experience. You’ll have Great Food with Healthy options, Great Service and a Great Atmosphere. In other words…..Go THERE! For my “Overall Experience,” I give Sloppy Joe’s 2 Avocados!! The atmosphere is fantastic. The entertainment is fantastic! The only reason I can’t give Sloppy Joe’s a BIG 3 Avocados…is….because…..they simply don’t have enough “Healthy Options” on their Menu. You can have salad or grilled chicken or grilled fish taco. The Key West Shrimp is great too….but I can go ANYWHERE and get these Healthy Food Options.   Great Place, Lots of fun….just be prepared to order salad with chicken or fish.   Add some more “Healthy Food Options” to your menu Sloppy Joe’s! Give me a delicious grilled Grouper with Brown Rice and Grilled Veggies. Or…..a Vegetable Soup.   Still……Sloppy Joe’s is a really Good place to visit   I want to personally thank Becky Lawrence, General Manager at Sloppy Joe’s and all the servers and very friendly bartenders, who made my experience at Sloppy Joe’s a memorable one.   If you are heading to Key West for a vacation, make sure Sloppy Joe’s is on your list for restaurants to visit!   Hey Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com If you are ready to "finally" lose weight and keep it off forever, you need to "join Weight Loss Nation."
