The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life
This episode is a recording of the inaugural meeting of the Kerouac Project of Orlando's Book Club. Matt Peters and I discuss William S. Burroughs's debut novel, Junky, and its place in the first quartet of his transformative works. The setting for this conversation is the place where Jack Kerouac lived when On the Road came out, where he lived when writing the first draft of The Dharma Bums.
Emily Buchanan hears reaction from the US to the biggest religious news story of the week: Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde and her sermon addressed to President Trump at the National Prayer Ceremony. It's the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day and we're live at Auschwitz-Birkenau ahead at the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp. A new book of previously unpublished work by Jack Kerouac chronicles 'The Buddhist Years' As the writer of On the Road and The Dharma Bums, which turned many people onto Buddhism, we'd love about a writer that got you interested in religion or spirituality. Email Sunday@bbc.co.ukAnd we hear from George Antone, an aid worker from the Holy Family Church in Gaza City. He's been sheltering with 500 other members of the parish since the start of the war and keeping in touch with Sunday. Correspondent Nick Beake has the latest on the ceasefire.PRESENTER: EMILY BUCHANAN PRODUCERS: CATHERINE MURRAY & SABA ZAMAN EDITOR: TIM PEMBERTON
Leah Roberts, a 23-year-old from North Carolina, disappeared in March 2000 after abruptly leaving home on a cross-country road trip inspired by Jack Kerouac's "The Dharma Bums." Following a series of personal tragedies, including the death of her mother and a near-fatal car accident, Leah set out on a journey seeking deeper meaning. Her white Jeep Cherokee was found abandoned in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington, with no sign of Leah and only scattered personal belongings, sparking widespread speculation and numerous theories about her fate, from voluntary disappearance to foul play or a mental health crisis. Despite extensive searches, renewed investigations, and national attention, Leah's fate remains an unsolved mystery, leaving her family and the public searching for answers to this day.In June 1972, five-year-old Adrien McNaughton disappeared without a trace during a family fishing trip at Holmes Lake, Ontario, sparking one of Canada's largest manhunts. Despite extensive search efforts involving hundreds of volunteers, police, and military personnel, no evidence of Adrien was ever found. Over the years, various theories emerged, including that he got lost in the wilderness or was abducted, but no definitive answers surfaced. The case was revisited in 2016 through the popular podcast Someone Knows Something, which reignited public interest but still provided no resolution. In 2019, remains found near the lake were initially suspected to be Adrien's, but tests ruled them out. To this day, Adrien McNaughton's disappearance remains one of Canada's most haunting unsolved mysteries, leaving his family and the nation with more questions than answers.(commercial at 7:47)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

I think this is the first time we've ever run two Coffeeshop Conversations in one week. It's because of the concerts both Ben Darwish and Jeremy Wilson are doing this week and weekend. Jeremy Wilson is, of course, known for his music. He was a member of the Dharma Bums and others. But he is also known and loved for starting the Jeremy Wilson Foundation which helps fund medical bills for musicians. There are several fund-raising musical events during the course of the year. One happens this weekend at the Alberta Rose Theatre. It's the Next Waltz during which a whole lot of our finest musicians sing and play all of the tunes from the movie, The Last Waltz which was the final concert by The Band. Let's catch up on the concert preparations, the work of the foundation and what's up with one of Oregon's favorite dudes, Jeremy Wilson.

“Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road.” ― Jack Kerouac, On the Road Hi! Let me introduce you to one of my absolute favorite writers, Jack Kerouac, and three incredible books that have had a profound impact on me as a writer: "On The Road," "The Dharma Bums," and "Big Sur." What makes Kerouac so special? Well, he believed in embracing the present moment and fully immersing oneself in life, breaking free from societal norms and expectations. His words beautifully captured the raw beauty and intensity of his experiences, treating life itself as a work of art. With his philosophy of "spontaneous prose," he encouraged writers to follow the natural rhythm and flow of their minds, avoiding rigid structures and rules. Trust me, once you dive into Kerouac's world, you'll understand why I'm so passionate about him! If you decide to pick up one of his books, I'd love to hear about your experience.
Or some such wild ass nonsense. Talking about Dharma Bums, Gary Snyder, Aaron Rodgers and how they're all connected.
Neben der Musik (v.a. Gas stoves are so hot right now. A recent report found that emissions from gas cooktops are worsening both the environmental crisis and the health of the humans who use them. This knowledge has stoked a heated cultural debate in the US. Some people have piped up to advocate for phasing out gas stoves, while others have fired back that the government can pry gas stoves out of their cold (presumably because they stopped paying the gas bill) dead hands. While the controversy has blown up, the reality is that gas is a problematic energy source with many worrisome issues. Reducing our dependence on the appliances and the fossil-based fuels they consume will be no easy task. This week on Gadget Lab, WIRED staff writer Amanda Hoover joins us to re-spark the gas stove debate, and talk about what we can actually do to fix the problems these old-school appliances are causing. Hello and welcome to episode 41 of The DJ B-12 Deep Acid House Experience. This show is for October of 2022. We have a very special show for you this month. This show is almost entirely oldskool first generation progressive house, along with trance, breaks, acid and techno all from the early to mid 1990's. I really want to thank everyone for the kind words and incredible feedback on the last show, number 40. It's such a beautiful thing hearing about people loving this music and have such fond memories of hearing this stuff back in the day. It's truly such an honor to play this stuff for you in 2022. For this month's show, I have dug even deeper than last month, and we go in much further. A lot of these tracks came from my personal record collection and a few are pretty rare. This has been one of my most challenging mixes yet to date, as a lot of these older tracks don't stay in time very well, so I put a lot of extra work and effort into this episode to bring you the absolute best show possible. The full Tracklist can be found everywhere, except Soundcloud, they don't provide enough space for these mega tracklists, but you can find it everywhere else such as Simplecast, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast and on my Facebook pages. This mix contains 75 tracks and a runtime of just over 3 hours! I hope you love it! Thank you for your support and listenership! If you enjoy these shows and want me to keep making them, please write a rating and review on my Facebook pages: DJ B-12 Deep Acid House Experience | Facebook and DJ B-12 | FacebookPlease listen, like, share, repost and comment on Soundcloud: Stream DJ B-12 music | Listen to songs, albums, playlists for free on SoundCloudPlease listen & Subscribe on these platforms: iTunes / Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dj-b-12-deep-acid-house-experience/id1465508866Google Podcast: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjYXN0LmNvbS9hWmxtNV9BaQAudible/Amazon Podcast: https://www.audible.com/pd/DJ-B-12-Deep-Acid-House-Experience-Podcast/B08K569NQ6Simplecast: https://djb12deepacidhouseexperience.simplecast.com/Tunes, remixes and labels: The Spirit , Logic Records, Asli Tanriverdi, Sufi, Dollars 'n Fun, Doi-Oing, Open, Morgan King, Leftfield, OM Records, Dominion, Renaissance Mix, Whoop!, Marine Boy, 108 Grand, Shi-Take, Zoom Records, Quivver, A&M Records, Funkcyde, Dol Enjoy The Vocal, UMM, Jerusalem, King Solomon Dub, Way Out West, Deconstruction, Joi Cardwell, Deep Dish, Eightball Records, Surreal, Fathers of Sound, Whitelake Records, Rockhopper '94, S.C.A.M. American Sublime discuss Jack Kerouac's Dharma Bums, Big Sur, the Beat Generation.
(My audio starts shaky, but gets better after 8 minutes) Bill Porter, aka Red Pine, calls the hermit life, "graduate school for the spiritually inclined." Bill Porter is a translator of Buddhist and Taoist mountain poets that uncross your third eye and waft the scent of a fine scotch. What can I say about Bill Porter that he won't say better about himself? I first stumbled on his book Road to Heaven: Encounters with Chinese Hermits while on retreat. His adventures and chitchats with hermits beckoned me to discover more about this hermit tradition and the man captivated by trekking into the mountains in search of monks living off the map. Bill is credited with an uptick of interest in the hermit life in China. Stateside Bill Porter is best known under his translator name of Red Pine, translating the work of Cold Mountain, Stonehouse, Lao Tzu and others over at the granddaddy of beautiful publishing Copper Canyon. We talk about this and more. To visit Bill Porter, well if you bump into him in his hometown. To find his work online go his publisher Copper Canyon at coppercanyonpress.org.

We recently realized that some of you may have missed the first two episodes of the Original Coach Beard's Book Club hosted by Michaela on our YouTube channel. So we wanted to share them over here with our podcast audience as well. While these episodes only feature Michaela's voice, you will notice that Andrea, Marita, and I contributed to the conversation as well. Nick likes typewriters, so he talks about them a lot. Along with Orlando author and podcast host John King, he co-hosted a typewriter meet-up at the Kerouac house here in Orlando. In this episode, Nick and Bob discuss the magic of typing machines, The Dharma Bums, and doing poetry on stage. Learn more about the Kerouac Project and its writing residency program.
In this episode, which originally aired in radio format on October 7th, 2021, I talk about Jack Kerouac's religious life, and how Catholicism and Buddhism, and his attempts to integrate the two, influenced his writing. I'll be sharing passages from the Master's thesis of my sister, Emily Simpson, who tracks Kerouac's spiritual conflict as it's revealed in the novels Visions of Gerard, The Dharma Bums and Big Sur.
We're joined this week by Are We Here Yet? podcast past guest and American Prose Poet Joshua Michael Stewart. Find Joshua Michael Stewart on the Innah Net. This gave us an opportunity to recount moments in the historical and literary life of Jack Kerouac. Born Jean-Louis Lebris de Kérouac March 12, 1922 in Lowell, MA Kerouac is widely considered father of the counter-culture phenomenon and literary movement known as the Beat Generation. Jack considered the term BEAT as shorthand for Beatitudes. This suggestion of a spiritual ethos behind the beats is explored at length in our discussion, which is rife with the Buddhism Keraouc explored and the Catholicism he was born to. We read from several of Jack's books including Visions of Gerard, Dr. Sax, Dharma Bums, On the Road, and from Jack's Letters which have been posthumously published in two volumes. It is the development of literary forms post mid-century influenced by beat lit that determines the movements relevance beyond its own time. So we recount excerpts from Josh's Bastard Children of Dharma Bum which we print in this episode script below. Many of Jack's artifacts including the original teletype of On the Road are currently on display at the Boott Mills Cottom Museum in Lowell, MA. Listen if you love beat literature, Lowell, writing in general or mid-century discussion of phenomenon Listen now. Featured Poems from The Bastard Children of Dharma Bums (Human Error Publishing, 2020) by Joshua Michael Stewart. #13 Wondering if I heard the gas station payphone, my fingers chatter with a jug of wine. The astonished poet— a hip girl in love with Whitman, refuses to subscribe to the privilege of consuming crap and making children, writes poems wine-soaked and wild, praying cops and the Republicans learn how to wake up and start breathing. I sleep good, live cheap, and don't give a shit for all that machinery in a house. I got songs made up plucking on strings tucked away in my brain. We walk on both sides of the street not hurting anyone. #34 Raspberry Jell-O in the setting sun poured through unimaginable craigs. Rose-tint hope—brilliant and bleak. Ice fields and snow raging mad. I read snowy air and woodsmoke. The wind dark, clouds forge. The sing in my stovepipe absorbs vaster, darker storm closing in like a surl of silence. No starvation turmoiling. My shadow the rainbow I haloed. Your life a raindrop. I stood in rose dusk, meditated in half-moon thunder. My mother's love drenching rains washed and washed. I called Han Shan in the mountains. I called Han Shan in morning fog. I closed my eyes, yelled dark wild down in my garbage pit. My hair long in the mirror. My skin soaking pristine light. My fire roaring. I hear the radio singing, She was the wind which passes through everything. Birds rejoicing sweet blueberries for the last time. Sitting, I twisted real life and cried cascades answering the meditation bell. I know desolation. I owe gritty love back to this world. Poems from Love Something (Main Street Rag, forthcoming Fall 2022) BROKEN A bird crashes against a window The children scream, the mother screams. The bird's in the dirt flapping its broken wing as the children run through the rooms flapping their arms like wings, slam into walls, smash into each other, whoop and holler and laugh, and unsheathe their little teeth— so tiny it seems they wouldn't break skin. This house that smells like a woodpile under a tarp after three winters, where a social worker wrote in her notebook, This mother clearly doesn't love this child, where a river runs through the living-room, and wildfires bloom in the bedrooms, where there's something about my heart that isn't right, and I'm an old rug left out over a porch railing in the rain, where tomorrow will come, and I'll still be here in one form or another, here where I can take off my shirt, and bare the scar on my shoulder that fits my younger cousin's mouth. ELEGY FOR WHO I ONCE WAS Summer. We were walking, a country road before dawn, and you were dead. I don't remember your dying but there you were, dragging your feet, your eyes like the bottoms of glass ashtrays. Your breath. I said it smelled of death and you just groaned. I felt like an idiot. I never wanted this. I never wanted it to rain. Do you have any idea what a soggy corpse is like so early in the morning? I tried to pick up the pace, but all you could do was slosh down the road. Eventually, we came to a barn and hobbled inside to get dry. Soon the sun was up. The rain had stopped and the insects were getting jiggy in the fields. You slumped into an empty stall. Sunlight beamed through slits in the boards and the dust of your body mingled with the dust of the barn, the outside world and possibly me. Despite the decay you looked lovely disappearing like that. And I confessed if I wasn't such a fool I'd love you right down to the bone. “Vultures usually do.” It was the first thing you'd said all morning.

He was raised speaking the French-Canadian working class dialect Joual until he learned English at age five. Kerouac studied at local Catholic public schools and the Horace Mann School in New York City, as well as Columbia University and The New School. In 1942, Kerouac joined the United States Merchant Marine, and a year later joined the United States Navy—he served only eight days of active duty before being honorably discharged on psychiatric grounds. Soon after, Kerouac was involved in the murder of David Kammerer, having helped his friend Lucien Carr dispose of evidence, and was arrested as a material witness. Unable to convince his father to pay for bail, Kerouac agreed to marry fellow writer Edie Parker in exchange for her financial support and moved to Detroit, Michigan. Their marriage was quickly annulled due to infidelity, and Kerouac returned to New York City in 1944.Upon Kerouac's return to New York, he lived with his parents in Queens, where he wrote his first novel, The Town and the City (Harcourt Brace, 1950). Through Lucien Carr, Kerouac had met many of the literary figures now associated with the Beat Generation, including Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, and in 1949 he began his most famous literary work, On the Road (Viking Press, 1957), which was tentatively titled "The Beat Generation" and "Gone on the Road." Kerouac finished the largely autobiographical novel in April 1951, though it remained unpublished until 1957. During that time, Kerouac completed ten other autobiographical novels, including The Subterraneans (Grove Press, 1958), Doctor Sax (Grove Press, 1959), Tristessa (Avon, 1960), and Desolation Angels (Coward McCann, 1965).In July of 1957, Kerouac moved to Orlando, Florida, while awaiting the release of On the Road later that year. Soon after, the New York Times ran a review lauding Kerouac as the voice of a new generation. The success of the novel garnered Kerouac celebrity status as a major American author, and his friendship with Ginsberg, Burroughs, and Gregory Corso cemented the influence of what became known as the Beat Generation. Other poet friends of Kerouac include Philip Lamantia, Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, Bob Kaufman, Diane di Prima, Lew Welch, and Amiri Baraka.Though best known for his novels, Kerouac is also associated with poetry of the Beat movement, including spoken word. Kerouac wrote that he wanted "to be considered as a jazz poet blowing a long blues in an afternoon jazz session on Sunday." Other books published later in Kerouac's career include The Dharma Bums and Big Sur. Jack Kerouac died from a chronic liver disease on October 21, 1969, at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, the result of a lifetime of heavy drinking. From https://poets.org/poet/jack-kerouac. This week Robbie and Jordan go in without a topic and come out with a great episode. Robbie debriefs about her recent retreat and her new relationship to the Dharma, Jordan gets deep on typography and the new Twitter font, and we discuss our favourite coffee mugs. We also vent some righteous anger about untimely reach suppression on social media, unpack the idea of ADHD people performing well under pressure, and speculate about what not talking for a couple weeks might do to our heads. In this episode we will get to know the Dublona Journey participants Maria Cantore, who tunes in from Argentina, and Hajar Bencheikh, who calls Casablanca and Lyon her home. While Hajar currently works in consultancy for clients in the energy sector in Paris, Maria leads an organization in Argentina and is politically active for climate action. Together they wanted to create a channel to connect people to feel empowered. Their project, which unfortunately will not continue, aimed to challenge their community and to visually convert the volume of participants into the impact they reached through this collective action. The long-term goal was to trigger behaviours and changes in society. Hopefully Hajar and Maria will take on this project again, and make the instagram account happen. Tune in to discover how sea level rise, a direct effect of global warming, has shifted Hajar's mindset and what ideas the two have for being active in climate action. It is claimed by some that trail mix was invented in 1968 by two California surfers who blended peanuts and raisins together for an energy snack. However, in the 1958 novel The Dharma Bums, written by Jack Kerouac’s, trail mix is mentioned when the two main characters describe the planned meals in preparation for their hiking trip.

Sly Dawg aka Steven Chew is a born and bread Surf Core human from Laguna Beach California. Sly is one of the coolest characters around and it was an honor to have him back on the Show. Growing up in Laguna Beach, Sly has always been a surf legend. Being sponsored at a young age and catching the surf bug when he was young allowed him to travel the world and go to secluded surf spots. This was way before the Internet and all we had was a few photos and epic tales of Surf Safari Adventure to be shared by firelight. Sly had been a nomadic Surf gypsy for decades now...Bringing to fruition the article written about him and his friend "Frogger" called "The Dharma Bums" by Surfer Magazine editor and Laguna Beach local Chris Mauro. In this article Mauro paints a picture of Sly and Froggers life as elite boat captains of then private and very secret island called Tavarua, off the coast of Fiji. Sly has lived a life of Surf, Travel and adventure. But through all of it he has still maintained the lovable, super sonic, wacky, unique surfy style that we all love about him. Sly is always involved with the community....weather he's planning a surf contest with the local Surf Shop (LS&S) or running his fabulous Wacky insanely popular Surf Camps....Sly keeps it light and fun. I checked in with Sly in the beginning of the Pandemic to see how he was adjusting...we had a great conversation...but I somehow erased it. (it was bound to happen). :-( So we decide to do it again... and everything worked out. Times are crazy and all these beach closures are starting to take a toll. I checked in with Sly to see how his Quarantine was going...plus he had just moved into a beautiful new treehouse tucked back into the hill of Bluebird Canyon. Here is my conversation with the one and only.. SLY DAWG!

Beatniks, Beat Generation, poetry, jazz, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and all things beat. Mid way through 2018 I was fortunate enough to pick up my now favorite book, Dharma Bums. It introduced me to meditation, poetry, vagabonding and a lifestyle I’m not too far removed from going for. The beatnik generation, as disregarded it is by the creators, is literally the most influential movement I’ve learned about in my life. Jack Kerouac, or as he liked to call himself, Jean Louis Lebris de Kerouac was an American novelist and poet active during the mid 20th century, best known for his book On the Road, which brought him an astounding amount of critical prestige. A pioneer of the Beat Generation, Kerouac is considered a literary iconoclast alongside his two close friends and fellow writers William S Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. His writing centers around a method of spontaneous prose, covering topics such as drugs, excessive drinking, Buddhism, travel, poetry, jazz, and sex, and with the popularity and renown of On the Road, Jack became a celebrity overnight, not that he was exactly thrilled by it. Now, I will say that Kerouac’s notoriety has only grown over the years, and that is evident by the fact that today, every single one of his books are in print, including The Town and the City, On the Road, Doctor Sax, the Dharma Bums, Mexico City Blues, The Subterraneans, Desolation Angels, Visions of Cody, The Sea Is My Brother, and Big Sur…an unbelievable accomplishment for a writer of any standing. Still, you can’t help but wonder, what is the true reality behind Jack Kerouac’s inspiration? Most of his creations are semi-autobiographical, and a lot of his life was spent in and out of poverty, not to mention that he was an accessory to murder (don’t worry we’ll get to that). And like most writers of this generation, Jack had a shit personal life, making his way through three wives, one daughter he swore wasn’t his until a paternity test proved it so, and mood swings that would make even the most hormonal woman wonder what the hell was going on. There is a lot to Kerouac…much more than I ever anticipated, and I am so excited to spend episode 24 of Legacy: the Artists Behind the Legends, exploring this crazy bastards life with you all.

Paul Rouzer‘s new book offers a Buddhist reading of a famous collection of poems and the author associated with them, both of which were called Hanshan, or Cold Mountain. On Cold Mountain: A Buddhist Reading of the Hanshan Poems (University of Washington Press, 2015) presents and proposes what it calls a “Buddhist approach to poetry”: rather than focusing on the intentions of the author in reading poetry, it offers a way of thinking about the importance of the way a poem is read. Pt. 1 of the book introduces readers to the history of, and some of the technical issues surrounding, the Hanshan poems: its prefatory material, later debates about its authenticity, arguments in Chinese scholarship about the life and dates of the poet. It also proposes a way that we might think about a “Buddhist poetics.” Pt. 2 of the book looks closely at the overarching themes and rhetoric of the poems themselves, looking at the ways that meaning is made through internal and external juxtapositions, and tracing the tensions between moving and staying, residence and travel, and motifs of “blasted trees,” moons, jewels, beautiful women, and more through the poems. The same year that Jack Kerouac’s Dharma Bums appeared – 1958 – American poet Gary Snyder published his first translations of Hanshan, and Pt. 3 of Rouzer’s book considers resonances between the Beat and post-Beat writers and the Buddhist rhetoric, imagery, and themes of the Cold Mountain poems. It’s a fascinating book that’s a pleasure to read for both specialist and general readers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

"One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple". Jack Kerouac wrote that in The Dharma Bums, and it defines the element that sits at the core of the best digital strategy. Simplicity.
• Bums United - Ian explains how he was introduced to the mindrollers, and discusses some of his early transformers, including the discovery of transcendental meditation, and subsequently Buddhism • Don’t be a Buddhist (Be a Buddha) - There are no rules in Buddhism, just suggestions, which point in the direction of awakening. We can all have unique methods that move us closer to that state of awareness. Ian makes it a point to include Metta as part of his practice, citing it as a major shift on his path. Raghu highlights the synergistic effects of Vipassana in combination with the practice of Metta - Quiet the mind, invoke the heart • The Last Irish Monk - Ian talks about his initial discovery of U Dhammaloka, and the subsequent inspiration that led to his current film project, through which he hopes to rescue the great sage from obscurity • ‘Warning to Buddhists’ (Choice words from U Dhammaloka) Ian reads from some of the more controversial work of the late Irish monk, and expresses his deep admiration for the courage displayed throughout his mysterious existence - Engaged Buddhism is underated • Down with Dogma - U Dhammaloka was well known for his proactive and outspoken nature. His disappearance from history is not so surprising, given his proclivity for exposing untruths that undermine the established order • Cultural Considerations - Dave inquires about potential parallels between the struggles of Theos Bernard and those of U Dhammaloka in being accepted into these cultures. Raghu explains the greater acceptance in places like Burma, as opposed to the stricter standards of Tibet • Bum Support - Help Ian share this lost wisdom by donating to his current crowd funding campaign • Timeless Message - The actions taken by this little known Irish monk are as applicable today as they were in his time - Make your life your message
In this episode we speak to Jesse Workman, Philosophy and Religious studies PhD candidate, about the interchange of ideas and religions in the ancient world, and how the early religions of Europe affected Asian thought and religion and vice versa by way of the Silk Road. Also discussed are the insane distances ideas travelled long before international travel was available to most of the human population, the difficulty in tracing the sources and influences on ideas, and intentional and accidental biases that result when translating an idea, document, or religious work from one language into another.
