#156  - Hidden Secrets of the Beauty Industry: The Ultimate Guide to At-Home Ageless Beauty with Cosmetologist and Holistic Beauty Expert, Jessica Rose If you've ever wondered whether your skincare routine is helping or secretly sabotaging your glow, this episode of Pretty Well is your wake-up call. I sit down with Jessica Rose—certified nutritionist, licensed cosmetologist, and holistic beauty expert—to unpack the truth about the beauty ingredients your skin craves and why your “anti-aging” serum might be aging you faster. Jessica shares her journey from salon professional to wellness advocate, revealing how she helps women ditch harmful ingredients and embrace a radiant, toxin-free approach to beauty. We talk about powerful clean beauty ingredients, the surprising benefits of face workouts (yep, your face needs exercise, too), and how to age beautifully without losing your mind (or your budget). Jessica also shares why some of the most expensive skincare products may be the worst for your skin. If you're ready to simplify your routine, support your skin from the inside out, and learn anti-aging hacks you didn't even know existed, this one's for you. Hair loss is one of the most emotionally devastating health challenges, especially for women, and it's far more common than most people think. But what if we told you it's not the real problem? In this transformative episode, Susan sits down with Carrie Hicks, a salon owner turned Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, to uncover the deeper truth about hair loss. What begins as a conversation about thinning strands quickly becomes a powerful exploration of root cause healing, the ripple effects of stress, and how lifestyle choices, not genetics, are often the missing link to lasting recovery.Carrie shares her journey from stylist to health advocate after witnessing alarming levels of post-pandemic hair loss in her clients. Her story is one of heartbreak, relentless curiosity, and a commitment to helping women reclaim their health, confidence, and power, starting from the inside out.Together, Susan and Carrie explore how digestion, mineral imbalances, metabolic health, and emotional wellbeing are intimately connected to hair loss, and why no serum, supplement, or PRP injection can replace the foundational work of living in alignment with your body. This episode is a call to action for anyone who's been told their hair loss is “just genetic,” for those feeling like a stranger in their own skin, and for anyone ready to stop chasing surface-level fixes and start healing at the root.Your hair is trying to tell you something. Is there anything functional medicine CAN'T do? Apparently not, as our guest today, Carrie Hicks, is teaching us how we can even prevent/delay HAIR LOSS through a functional approach.   A long-time stylist and salon owner, Carrie isn't a stranger to working with people who are starting to lose their hair. What WAS new for her, however, was the dramatic increase in hair loss that occurred shortly after the pandemic began. Seeing this firsthand, she was fascinated by what was happening and wanted to give her clients a solution.   Not only did she find the solution for her clients, but the research process transformed her into a health detective, too!   Now, Carrie is on a mission to spread the word that hair loss, contrary to popular belief, can become a thing of the PAST for many people.   We hope you enjoy this episode. Please feel free to ask us any questions by shooting us a direct message @fdntraining. Or talk to Carrie directly @nurish.d   More About Carrie:   Carrie Hicks is a hairstylist and salon owner that had to start looking for real answers to her clients' hair loss after the pandemic in 2020 when an alarming number of female clients lost more than half their hair.  Already certified as a Holistic Nutritionist, not one to believe in quick fixes or band-aids, and on her own self-healing journey, she set out on a journey to find the actual causes of hair loss, and how to successfully treat it.    She took advanced hair loss education courses, attended the World Congress of Trichology, and studied everything she could get her hands on.  She found that most people experiencing hair loss are given prescription medications that can affect one's hormone health negatively and that 9 times out of 10 no labs were run to assess or manage the effects of these meds.  Other treatments can be invasive, painful, and very expensive, and while they can be effective, if the actual hidden stressors and underlying causes of the hair loss are not addressed, the results obtained with these treatments won't last long.    Carrie founded Nurish.d Hair loss + Wellness two years ago where she has been helping women with hair loss but knew something was missing in being able to really get to the root cause. She then chose the only logical choice, to become a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner.  Now she does functional lab testing to help her clients see the big picture of their health and identify the actual contributing factors to their hair loss.  Carrie specializes in working with women experiencing hair loss from a wide range of health issues, including PCOS, hypothyroid, insulin resistance, menopause, digestive issues, and chronic stress.  She is currently training her stylists how to help their own clients with a functional perspective on hair loss and is creating a program for other stylists to follow as well because she knows the important role stylists play in their clients' lives and that they have a front row seat to any changes in their health status.   She is the founder of Crimson & Clover Hair Studio in Flagstaff, AZ and Nurish.d Hair Loss + Wellness and is a licensed Cosmetologist, a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, and a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. Ep. 162: Kia Ragland's Journey from Cosmetologist to Product Developer at Kylie Cosmetics   On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Kia Ragland, Director of Product Development - Color Cosmetics & Skin for Kylie Cosmetics. Ragland is a proud woman of color credited with creating beauty products and formulas for women of all complexions and skin tones.    Before joining the Kylie Cosmetics & Skin team, Kia began her career as a cosmetologist and a certified makeup artist that felt like she was destined for more. Her determination to be a part of change led her to continue her education at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), where she discovered product development. Product development ended up being the career that Kia knew she was destined for because, as a biracial woman, she felt that she was not represented in the beauty industry, and this would allow her to be behind products that were not only meant for her skin and complexion but for other women as well.    As Kia began to obtain experience from being an Intern at Stila Cosmetics and later working there, her career began to propel when becoming a Product Developer at Estee Lauder, working on the Smashbox Cosmetics brand, where she worked on the iconic team behind Smashbox's Legendary “Be Seen” Lipstick. Today, Kia is one of the lead product developers of color cosmetics and skincare at Kylie Cosmetics.  I had such a wonderful time chatting with Kia. Product development is one of those things that doesn't get talked about much in the industry so having this conversation with Kia was truly eye opening and so much fun. In this interview Kia shares:   -What sparked her interest in beauty at a young age -What led her to pursue product development as a career -The product development process from idea to consumer -Her opinion on the rise of celebrity beauty brands -Her proudest moment as a product developer so far -Spring/summer beauty trends she's loving -What you need to become a product developer and sooo much more   Let's get into it!
