In the last episode, I covered the difference between Glossophobia and just normal, everyday public speaking nervousness. In summary, everyone gets some nervousness when they stand up to speak in front of a group. However, a phobia is an irrational fear. So, if the fear is extreme or irrational, your fear may be a full-blown phobia. On this episode, I'm going to give you some tips that will help you reduce or even eliminate this fear. If you do these things, you can calm your nerves and become a more poised and confident public speaker -- even if your public speaking fear is extreme. Unlike most phobias, glossophobia doesn't need medication or therapy. It can be conquered with practice and coaching -- as long as that practice and coaching builds self-confidence during every step along the way.
For the next couple of weeks, I will cover a quick series on Glossophobia and public speaking fear. Guest post by Julie Smith who offers some tips about how to be a better public speaker. She is a sought-after leadership coach, author of Coach Yourself Confident: Ditch the self-doubt tax, unlock humble confidence (Practical Inspiration Publishing, £14.99) and founder of leadership consultancy Talent Sprout. Glossophobia, or fear of public speaking, is one of the most common and powerful fears. And it's an understandable one because delivering a talk puts us in the vulnerable position of potentially being judged. And what happens when we fear that we're about to be judged? Our body reacts to the threat - our heart rate speeds up, our stomach churns, our palms become sweaty. This is the fight or flight response in action, and it can feel unpleasant. We don't necessarily want our heart to feel like it's beating out of our chest, cartoon-style, just as we're being introduced. Fortunately it's possible to calm our nervous system in the moment, and it's possible to reduce our fear of public speaking over time. How to be a better public speaker Here are five practices to try: 1: Understand what builds confidence Remind yourself that feeling nerves is actually an essential part of building your confidence. Paradoxically, in order to build confidence, we must push ourselves to take action without it. It's the repeated experience of acting, learning and progressing - in spite of our self-doubt - that grows our confidence over time. Fear is a critical element in the process of building confidence. Everytime you push yourself to speak in public, you find out a bit more about what you're capable of. And if you keep pushing yourself to do it, then eventually it will become less scary. You might even start to enjoy it. 2: Settle yourself When you notice your heart racing and your face becoming red, try using the calming power of physical touch to take the body's stress meter down a notch. Our skin is an incredibly sensitive organ, and research indicates that physical touch releases oxytocin (which helps to regulate our emotional response) and calms cardiovascular stress. Find a way to lay a hand on your bare skin. In short sleeves, this could be by purposefully folding your arms and gently holding your upper arms with your hands. In long sleeves, you might try putting a hand to the back of your neck and holding it there for a moment. This doesn't require any explanation to those around you; it's unlikely that anyone will notice what you're doing. You can quietly settle yourself, getting ready to do yourself justice. 3: Stand tall Research has shown that our physical posture has an impact on our level of confidence. In 2012, American social psychologist Amy Cuddy gave one of the most watched TED talks of all time: 'Your body language may shape who you are.' In this talk, Cuddy advocated for a power pose - an expansive posture in which we take up more space; shoulders back, head up, feet planted firmly on the ground. Her argument was that standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don't feel confident - can boost self-belief and help us to perform better. Whilst this idea hasn't been without controversy, follow-up research has confirmed that slouching or making yourself small feeds self-doubt. So be careful that your posture doesn't sap your confidence. Take up space, stand tall. 4: Remember that you can't mindread You are presenting and Bradley on the front row yawns theatrically and rubs his face with his hands. Your mind is immediately full of doubt: he's absolutely bored to tears and everyone else must feel the same. If this is what you're telling yourself, then it's not surprising that your confidence takes a hit. A reminder: unless someone tells you what they are thinking, there is no way that you can possibly know what is going through their mind. You can pick up clues, of course you can, but you need to accept that you might not be right. What to do if you notice yourself mindreading? Remind yourself that your interpretatio...
The message this week is titled "Glossophobia" by Pastor Cole Tawney discussing Acts 13:13-52 in our sermon series called “On Mission for the Gospel” taking us through the book of Acts. As followers of Jesus Christ we must overcome our fears of using words to communicate the good news of the gospel by making ready our hearts and our minds to tell the message of salvation. Thanks for watching Riverwood Chapel's sermon!
Glossophobia, is the fear of public speaking and it's believed to affect about 75% of people across the globe. With this in mind, think about how critical being able to speak to an audience, to customers, to teammates, in any working environment is. It's why communication skills are in such high demand in organizations, and why today's guest is particularly important. Matt Abrahams is an instructor and lecturer at Stanford University, and author of “Speaking Up Without Freaking Out: 50 Techniques for Confident and Compelling Presenting.” He was the co-founder of Silicon Valley based coaching group BoldEcho and is the founder of Think Fast Talk Smart - The Podcast. Matt has been studying and practicing the art of communicating for over 25 years, and after helping companies like Twitter, Google, and even the U.S. Army coach their members to be better communicators, Matt has compiled all of his experience in his latest book, “Think Faster, Talk Smarter: How to Speak Successfully When You're Put on the Spot.” We caught up with Matt to dive headfirst into the book, and cover some of the biggest pain points around speaking, things people often overlook, and what the dawn of AI means for our ever evolving communication styles. This is another episode you're not going to want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!
This is part two of a two-part series on Glossophobia -- the fear of public speaking. Last week, we talked about what this phobia is and what causes it. This week, I will give you a few of my best tips to overcome this fear -- even if you fall into the camp of having a full-blown phobia of public speaking. How to Overcome Glossophobia (An Irrational Fear of Public Speaking)1) Start Small. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. If your fear is intense, there is no need to schedule a high-level presentation in front of 1000 people right away. Instead, start by speaking up more in staff meetings, at church, or join a social organization. Set a goal for each interaction. For instance, if you never speak up in staff-meeting, just set a goal to share a single idea with the group. Then, over time, increase the goal. Next week, add two ideas, etc.2) Look for Opportunities to Present, and then Be Courageous. You will never conquer any fear if you simply avoid the situations that cause the fear. Instead, look for opportunities to speak where the consequence of failure is pretty low. For instance, you can offer to speak at career day at your child's school. (If you totally bomb this presentation, so what?) Then, be courageous. I talked in the article 7 Qualities of a Great Speaker about the difference between Self-Confidence and Poise. Self-confidence comes from having a series of successes doing something. Poise, however, is where a speaker is not confident but performs courageously anyway. The more of these courageous successes that you can string together, the more self-confident you will be.3) Document What You Did Well. The reason that our presentation skills classes work so well is that our instructors help each student document what they do well in each presentation. For instance, the instructor will teach the student a way to make part of his/her presentation easier, show the student how to do it, and then when the presenter succeeds, the instructor reinforces that success. You can do the same after each of your presentations as well. Immediately after presenting, make a list of some of the things that you did well in the speech. Turn off your internal critic for a while. (All of us are our own worst critic, so you will have to fight this.) Then, before your next presentation, refer to the items on your list. These lists will help you reduce the phobia and build confidence over time.4) Practice in a Controlled Environment. If you want a faster way to conquer glossophobia, join us in one of our fear of public speaking workshops. One of the great things about being in a controlled environment like a class or workshop is that the risk of failure is reduced to just about 0%. The only way to conquer glossophobia is to string together a series of successes that outweigh, in our minds, the causes that we talked about above. As each participant masters each part of a fantastic presentation, the fear is reduced exponentially. In fact, in many cases, the growth is so fast and so dramatic that the irrational fear is replaced by confidence. The process isn't foolproof, and it isn't easy. However, it works almost 100% of the time!Show Notes: How to Overcome Glossophobia (An Irrational Fear of Public Speaking)

Glossophobia is a noun that refers to a fear of public speaking. Our word of the day is comprised of the Greek prefix G-L-O-S-S-O, derived from the word for ‘language.' And P-H-O-B-I-A, a Greek suffix that refers to fear. Here's an example of the what they create when combined: Sharon's glossophobia makes me wonder why she chose to pursue a career in politics in the first place. You'd think someone who feared speaking public would avoid a life of giving speeches, but she has eagerly chased it.
Most of us — even those at the top — struggle with public-speaking anxiety so you are not alone. Alan came to me for advice on how to deal with his fear of public speaking. Like so many others, his heart would begin to race, his mouth would feel sticky and dry, and his face would flush bright red. Glossophobia is among the most common social fears people have—many even joke that they’re more fearful of public speaking than of dying! To help Alan conquer his fear of not “performing” well, I suggested he focus on the substance of his message instead of how well he’d deliver it. Shifting the focus to what will be shared, instead of one’s ability to share it, is similar to Paul’s approach to pointing others to God. When he wrote to the church at Corinth, he remarked that his message and preaching “were not with wise and persuasive words” (1 Corinthians 2:4). Instead, he’d determined to focus solely on the truth of Jesus Christ and His crucifixion (v. 2), trusting the Holy Spirit to empower his words, not his eloquence as a speaker. When we’ve come to know God personally, we’ll want to share about Him with those around us. Yet we sometimes shy away from it because we’re afraid of not presenting it well—with the “right” or eloquent words. By focusing instead on the “what”—the truth of who God is and His amazing works—we can, like Paul, trust Him to empower our words and share without fear or reluctance.
In this episode, I'm going to tell you how to overcome your fear of people judging you. Being able to rise above the worry of what your audience is thinking and how they are responding to you, is one of the best skill sets you will ever learn, no matter where you are in your professional journey. I'll share with you how to get rid of that nagging fear of what friends, co-workers or followers will think of your next presentation, video or meeting. You'll discover how easy it is to break through this barrier and radically shift the way you present from here on in!
