Hello, and welcome to Tales From The Potting Bench, a planty podcast where you'll hear all manner of stories from knowledgeable, passionate and invaluable people who love plants as much as you and I. We're here at the monumental 7th season of the podcast and thanks to you, the listeners, we're back with even more guests and this season promises to be even bigger, even better and with even more planty goodness! This season I'm focussing on those people who really know what they're talking about in a series of episodes I'm calling 'Experts In Their Field'. Along with a brand-new season, is a brand-new sponsor, and I'm thrilled to share that I'm joined for season 7 by the powerhouse of the plant world, Westland Horticulture. Westland are dedicated to empowering everyone with the skills, knowledge, and tools to help every gardener give it their best, season after season. Great gardening starts with great compost, and Westland has a trusted range of composts for your every gardening need, from giving your baskets and containers the best start in life filling your vegetable patch with nutrients ahead of a bountiful season. Our gardens are all wildly different, from small spaces full to the brim with flowers and edibles, to sprawling acres with lakes and meadows and balconies, courtyards or even just a few pots. But, no matter the size, shape or contents, our gardens all give us such physical and mental benefits in equal measure, and my guest this week is all too aware of the magical properties a garden can hold. Leigh Johnstone, perhaps better known as The Beardy Gardener, is indeed a gardener, but hes also a mental health advocate and now an award winning garden designer too. For the last few years, Leigh has shared the highs and the lows on his popular social media channels and his posts present a refreshing account of all sides of our daily lives, the good, the bad, the rough and the smooth. In this episode, we discuss how The Beardy Gardener came to be and exactly why his garden is his safe space. Enjoy! If you'd like to see more of Leigh's and the adventures of beardy himself, then you can follow him on Instagram where you'll find him as @beardygardener. Leigh is also a regular speaker at garden shows up and down the country so do seek out his website beardygardener.com, for where you may be able to see him next. Also, why not boost your garden, as well as your mood with Westland's Boost, All Purpose Liquid Plant Feed. You can achieve four times more blooms, giving you an even more stunning floral display and an abundance of healthy fruit and veg too. Using its unique Plantsense™ technology, Boost will feed all ornamental and ericaceous plants, plus all fruit and vegetables and give you incredible results. ✍️ Read My Latest Blog: Click Here

On April 4, the body of Linda Mary Beardy, a woman from Lake St. Martin First Nation, was discovered at a Winnipeg landfill. It's the same landfill where, less than a year ago, the victim of an alleged serial killer was found. Police say Ms. Beardy's death is not being considered a homicide, but it has brought renewed attention and outrage over the deaths of First Nations women in the area.In the last year, the remains of four First Nations women, believed to be victims of a serial killer, have been discovered or are believed to be in Winnipeg landfills. The outrage from the women's communities is not just over their deaths, but also over what they say is failure and inaction from Winnipeg Police. The Globe's crime and justice reporter Molly Hayes joins The Decibel to discuss why police have refused to search one of the landfills and the renewed fight for answers from the families and friends of missing and murdered Indigenous women.Questions? Hot off the presses - it's Margaret's conversation with Angela Barnes earlier this week. Angela shares some of Margaret's worst crush excesses. Beardy nerds? Check. Comedians from the 1990s? Oh yes. Angela's crushes include Kenny Everett (note for anyone born after 1979 - he was a very funny, very gay, very rude primetime ITV family entertainer. The 80s was a different time). George Michael gets a mention, as do John Lennon, and a man who once pissed her off so badly she filled his bed with Frosties while he was on a date with someone else. It's a crushed-packed 55 minutes, that's what we're saying. Don't forget to come and join the cult Substack - we post about one thing a week, so you won't be bombarded, and it gives us another way of keeping in touch if Twitter ends up in the bin. It's looking quite likely isn't it? https://crushedbymcs.substack.com/ Quick reminder of our live gig at Machynlleth on 30th April 2023 - we would love to see you there. We got some badges made, and if that won't persuade you to make the journey to North Wales, I don't know what will. Our guest Eleanor Morton, maybe? She's great, and we're very excited about finding out what her crush history is like. Tickets available here: https://machcomedyfest.ticketsolve.com/ticketbooth/shows/873644691 That's all the admin for this week. Til next time, Team Crushed xx
This week, Gavin and I are discussing one of the greatest Kung Fu films ever made. The wild, walloping, Wing Chun classic- Warriors Two. Starring the Korean kicking sensation Casanova Wong, genre favorite Leung Kar Yan aka Bryan Leung aka Beardy, and co-starring/ directed by the legendary Sammo Hung, this ferocious fight fest is sure to entertain even the most jaded of viewers! With wall-to-wall high-intensity Kung Fu fight scenes, ingenious training sequences, and a plethora of imaginative and ferocious characters, this definitive 70's martial arts flick delivers from start to finish. Listen in as we discuss what makes this film stand out above the rest, why it works where other pictures have failed, and why over 40 years after its release, it is STILL recognized as one of the seminal Kung Fu pictures. Don't forget to subscribe, download, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!

I made my “Untold Story of Thanksgiving” episode to help me — and hopefully you — understand the true, accurate history. As I think about the episode, I think it does a good job at correcting the history, but it still centers on the colonizers. Because of that, I've been thinking a lot about how I can better make Indigenous Peoples the center of our conversations and learning around Thanksgiving, and I knew just the right person to turn to to help me. On this week's episode, my dear friend Jalynne Geddes joins me to help unpack what we can do to center Indigenous Peoples. Jalynne is Nehiyaw from the Beardy's and Okemasis Cree Nation and is the creator behind the Nehiyanahk Creations on Instagram, where she shares her work as an activist both through words and through her beautiful beadwork. In this episode, you'll learn more about how our Indigenous brothers and sisters feel about Thanksgiving, how to center them during this time and how we can teach our kids about this as well. I hope by the end of this you have a clear understanding of what you can do in your family to decenter colonizers and instead give your focus to Indigenous Peoples this Thanksgiving. Check out our Thanksgiving resources Thanksgiving is this week, and we have a gaggle of free resources for you!
