Our first guest is a local chef with a very interesting background. Thomas Swearingen is up for the Favorite Chef from Best of Home Magazine. Besides preparing food, his military background has allowed him to connect with people on another level. Thomas currently works with children in Northern Wisconsin and enjoys sharing his 20 years of military experiences. He says that sometimes it is not what you have cooked but who you cooked for. He's served Presidents to Congressional Medal of Honor winners. You can help propel him in the contest by checking out THIS web page. Then Karissa Buck and Lisa Jones stopped by from the Community Clothes Closet in Menasha. They're currently running a special drive to help secure underwear for residents in need. Underwear is something many of us take for granted – until we don't have it. For the 11,200 individuals served by Community Clothes Closet, the comfort and confidence that come with a fresh pair of well-fitting underwear are often out of reach. When budgets are stretched, essentials like new undies take a back seat. Click HERE for details on The Great Undie Giveback! On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Lauren Sackett, CEO at the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce in Northern Wisconsin and Vice Chair of the Oneida County Tourism Council. We discuss her destination's commitment to becoming more inclusive and accessible and why this is a positive business decision. Lauren also digs into how hosting events like the US Deaf Golf Championship and Ski for Light provided practical insights that shaped their current accessible initiatives. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How Lauren and her organization are focusing on making Rhinelander more inclusive and accessible for diverse travelers What innovative strategies Lauren and her team are implementing to enhance accessibility, including detailed trail mapping and improved website information Lauren shares the experience and impact of hosting events such as the US Deaf Golf Championship and Ski for Light, and how these have helped shift perspectives on inclusivity How the creative approach to the region's mythological mascot, the Hodag, has become a great tourism driver for Rhinelander Why the formation of the Northwoods Chamber Collaborative has been a successful model for idea sharing and regional support The New Face of Cooperative Tourism At the core of Rhinelander's tourism growth is coopetition, and Lauren emphasizes that when neighboring destinations work together, they create greater potential for shared success. Through the Northwoods Chamber Collaborative, DMOs and chambers gather quarterly to share insights, tackle common challenges, and support collective growth. This collaboration builds an ecosystem of shared learning and resource optimization. Promoting Accessible Travel A strong commitment to inclusivity and diversity underpins Rhinelander's tourism approach. They place a huge emphasis on equipping their website with features that support minority-owned businesses and ensure accessibility details are readily available. The introduction of detailed GIS mapping for trails has also seriously boosted accessibility awareness, providing visitors with important information about trail conditions and amenities. This is especially important in 2025, when travelers value destinations where they feel welcome and accommodated. It translates into longer stays and stronger economic impacts on destinations. Hosting events like the US Deaf Golf Championship and Ski for Light provided practical insights that shaped current initiatives, such as developing printed and digital trail guides enriched with GPS features to enhance visitor experience. The local community has also been keen to display support through window stickers, and their grassroots enthusiasm underscores the region's commitment to transformation, not just for tourists but for local residents too. Redefining Success Stories in Tourism Rhinelander's approach to tourism isn't just about increasing visitor numbers; it's about crafting memorable experiences that resonate with diverse audiences. The town, famously associated with the mythical Hodag, harnesses this culturally significant symbol, featuring it in festivals and marketing materials. Beaver Fever continues to hold sway over Legends Podcast as we visit the wintry woods of Northern Wisconsin for an ultra-indie throwback movie about an applejack brewer turned trapper who contends with the forces of nature. Directed by Mike Cheslik and starring Ryland Tews, the film draws inspiration from a myriad of sources, including the works of Abbott and Costello, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Looney Tunes, and the Three Stooges, as well as wilderness movies like The Revenant and survival role-playing video games, this black-and-white 2022 release has almost no dialogue and very little plot. Off a budget of only $150,000, it grossed over a million in limited screenings, scored a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and has earned comparisons to the early films of Robert Rodriguez, David Lynch, Wes Anderson, Sam Raimi, and Peter Jackson. Bio: Dan Barker is an award-winning leadership expert and Senior HR Business Partner with 20 years of experience, specializing in MBTI, Gallup Strengths, and Change Management. He founded IDA Leadership Lab to drive organizational growth through workshops and chairs the Bonneville Youth Development Coalition, focusing on youth and community development. A member of the Bad River Band of the Ojibwe, Dan advocates for indigenous rights and cultural preservation, enriching his work as a leadership consultant and speaker.Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-barker-mhrm-79719340/ Website: https://idaleadershiplab.com/Quote: "True empathy comes from that ability to put yourself in someone's shoes, not for me to just be able to tell you I understand what it's like."Episode Highlights: Dan shares his unique journey from growing up in Northern Wisconsin and dealing with cultural transitions to becoming a leading figure in leadership development and community advocacy. He highlights the importance of preserving his Native American roots as a member of the Bad River Band of the Ojibwe and integrating those values into his leadership practices. His focus on empathy, progression, and blending diverse cultures and heritages offers invaluable insights for fostering inclusive environments.Childhood Incidents: Dan, a naturally aggressive child, joined football in seventh grade but quit due to the sport's physical demands. His dad encouraged him to view the challenge as a chance for growth. As an adult, Dan recalls the difficulty of moving from Idaho Falls to Boise during junior high, transitioning from a close-knit community to a larger, unfamiliar school, which left him feeling isolated during a critical period.Influential Groups: Having grown up in Idaho, the religious-based culture influenced Dan's view of culture and drew him closer to his indigenous culture. It also opened him up to realizing there's an outsider factor.Cultural Influence: Dan reflects on his family's heritage, emphasizing the importance of both the Kadat and Balange lines. His great-grandmother grew up near the Bad River Reservation on Lake Superior, maintaining a strong Indigenous connection. Dan's mother humorously notes that her grandmother, fluent in Ojibwe, didn't pass it down, possibly due to using it for private conversations among her siblings.Dan married someone from a different culture, and blending their backgrounds was initially challenging. Over time, they successfully merged their cultures, creating unique family traditions and identities.Temperament and Personality: Dan believes that over the years, his empathy and compassion have evolved. He believes that when he was young, he lacked the social awareness to help him develop these two qualities.Cultural Epiphanies: Dan remembers joining Cub Scouts, which was organized by the LDS Church. Meetings were held at homes or churches, often including prayers. At one event, his father noticed Dan folding his arms during prayer, an LDS practice, and corrected him, explaining their family prayed differently. As a child, Dan saw this as a division between "us and them," but as an adult, he understands it reflected cultural differences—his family attended church, just not the LDS Church.Soapbox Moment: Dan's principle is always to leave a place better than you found it. He believes if we do that, it sits well with our environmental factors and how we orient ourselves in the various work that we do and also with our families. He also encourages us to give back to our communities.Support the show

I became acquainted with Cole Strehlow circa 2012, when my wife and I first began attending The Crossing Church in Fort Collins, where Cole still serves as Chief Musician. He was a gifted writer with a Theology degree from a small university in Northern Wisconsin, and was trying to string an income together through church music, freelance writing, and crappy jobs.A few years later, he was the first employee of a startup called Wintermind Group (featured in Episode 24), which later merged to become Pop Acta with Cole as right-hand to the CEO. At Pop Acta he headed a skunk-works project in 2022, which sprouted wings and took off as The Flyover - a wholly-owned subsidiary with Cole at the helm. Condensed daily email news, minimal bias, and growing quickly into state-by-state versions. Cole's is a journey of consistent growth in responsibility and impact, built on do the right thing. Enjoy. News Flash is brought to you by IntelStor. For market intelligence that generates revenue, visit www.intelstor.com. Allen Hall: Right, first up, the U. S. Department of Agriculture has announced a 4. 37 billion dollars in funding through their Empowering Rural America program. This historic investment, the largest in rural electrification since 1936, will support clean energy development across seven states. Now the program aims 5, 000 jobs, reduce electricity costs, and cut climate pollution by about 1. 1 million tons annually. 4. 37 billion as the Biden administration exits the executive branch is a lot of money. Does this have a chance of, of existing once the new administration comes in? Phil Totaro: Yeah, I actually think so because this, this program is done through the Department of Agriculture interestingly enough, not the Department of Energy, and the reason that they're doing it is because the co ops are actually, outside of kind of the, the organized utilities coordinating like corporate power buying. The co ops are actually one of the biggest You know, in aggregate power buyers in, in the United States, especially when you start talking about all the co ops, we're getting kind of gobbled up by Touchstone and, you know, most co ops in the United States are now organized under, you know, a parent kind of umbrella corporation. So this is a lot of money that's going into, you know, basically subsidizing renewable energy power buying or the development of distributed power generation facilities. That are gonna be adjacent to these these rural communities that are able to take advantage of this this bunny. So, this is one where I really do hope that they don't try and cut it because this is actually, like, Putting money in the pockets of people that are doing clean energy power buying, and it's actually helping get wind and solar and storage deployed on the grid. So I, this is actually a great program. Great for the department of agriculture to be doing it. Not sure why the department of energy wasn't previously on board with something like this. Joel Saxum: Coming from someone who has co op power now and grew up with co op power up in Northern Wisconsin in a rural area, injection of capital into rural environments anywhere makes me smile. So, because they usually don't see as much, right? So when a big project comes through or something gets announced like this, everybody gets a little bit happy in those areas. And so, weird to see it. Not weird, I suppose, in a lame duck situation from the federal government, but yeah, I hope this one continues to, to roll forward in these projects to get some ink behind them before January 20th. Allen Hall: In our next story, Brookfield Asset Management has completed its acquisition of 53 percent stake in French renewable power ...

In this episode of HFA Heather Wisner joins us to discuss an observational study that she performed of Human Remains Detection dogs and their ability to locate and respond to target odor. Heather Wisner is from Northern Wisconsin. Her masters was completed through Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona. Heather is a K9 Handler for the local SAR team in Wi and has been involved in Search and Rescue for almost ten years. Her journey with her K9 Obi who was adopted from a rescue, lead her to completing her Masters Degree in K9 Research. Heathers research lead the way to create the first Search and Rescue K9 bill for the State of Wisconsin with State Representives Beth Meyers and Chanz Green. That bill became state law in the spring of 2024. Heather was invited to speak on her research in Miami, Florida last year at the first K9 Science Conference in the U.S. and just recently spoke in Canada on this topic. Heather continues to be an advocate for SAR, K9 training and is working to add additional state laws. She hopes to empower k9 handlers with knowledge and speak on the most recent research. Her K9 partner Obi and her newest partner Rey continue to keep her busy as she continues to research K9s, train in SAR and support K9 handlers in North America. May the scent be with you! During this episode we discuss Heather's thesis: "It Costs an Arm and a Leg: Cadaver Dog Workability Study". In her study Heather conducts an observational study of HR dogs to determine their reliability in locating and providing a trained response to target odor. Her study also delves into the important topic of accessing training aids of different sizes and weights to ensure that dogs are exposed to the full range of human decomposition odors. If you are interested into the training methods of HR dogs, this is an episode that you can not miss! Tonight I will be speaking with Jeremy. Jeremy and his children were on a hike when a large creature charged them. Jeremy said “We tried to leave without being seen because there was more then one of them. As we tried to leave that's when they saw us. I have never been so terrified in my life.” Jeremy writes “Hi wes, I'll keep this as short as possible. Me and my two kids last year around July 4th went on vacation to Northern Wisconsin. We usually stay in a cabin on a lake for a week. We like to go to lake Superior in Michigan.. and we travel around the area looking at waterfalls.. we heard about this place called lake in the clouds I believe it's one of the highest elevated lakes in the United States.. after we stayed and looked at the scenery at the top of this mountain we left and about a mile down the road there's a river and this waterfall I believe it goes into lake in the clouds.. I'm not exactly sure but I believe it does or it might even go into lake Superior lake In The clouds is extremely close to lake Superior.. from the parking lot to the waterfall was about a 2 mile hike.. we decided to walk upstream and just do some hiking after about 1 hour of relaxing at the site with I guess you call them big boulders not just rocks. We had a very terrifying encounter with what you call a Sasquatch I guess I believe it was a family of Sasquatch.. it killed a deer it looked like it prayed over the deer after killing it noticed us and the leader or the dad/father / husband Sasquatch came charging at us.. it was horrifying after this encounter me and my kids were really never the same since that happened.. we have talked to a counselor/therapist which actually helped a lot talking about it and my daughter still goes to this day.. my friend told me about your channel I don't know 6 months ago maybe longer.. and after a hearing some of other people's encounters I talk to my kids about contacting you… Kids told me I should not give real names.. so I would like our names kept out of the story… I think it will help me talking to you.. I truly believe the therapist / counselor believes our story… I could care less if she did or not… I'm just rambling on so I apologize there's only a couple people we told about this.. but if you would be so kind to get back to me I would appreciate it thank you and thank you for helping many other people.
This week we have... Same old stuff, different week. Yep! It's Mike and Bill. Mike started out with his reading and it was about living in the moment. It's something that we strive for and talk about quite a bit and it was a good conversation. We announced our "surprise guest," and gave a little background. His episode will be released on Sunday, September 1, 2024. Then on to the word sobriety (what does it mean to us), triggers (again), cocaine sharks, Hi Bob, psychics and some of our "normal" nonsense. We also chatted about Northern Wisconsin and the beauty of Michigan. Enjoy the episode. Visit us Podcast www.sobernotmature.com Store www.sobernotmatureshop.com

Hey, everybody. Welcome to Coach Unplugged. I'm so happy you decided to join us today. Before we jump into the podcast, I'd like to give a big shout out to our sponsors. Today, we're going to talk about coaching in non-urban or rural areas and some of the obstacles faced. Both urban and rural areas have their challenges, but today we'll focus on rural areas. In urban areas, there's often more movement of players, but in rural areas, the challenges can be quite different. One major challenge in rural areas is the smaller size of schools. With smaller schools, there's often less interest in basketball, leading to lower numbers of players. For example, you might start a season with ten players and end with only four. This is a big problem and can make it difficult to sustain a team. Another significant challenge is travel. Rural teams often have to travel long distances for games. For instance, you might have to take a five to six-hour trip for a game. This means spending a lot of time on uncomfortable buses, which can be exhausting for both players and coaches. In my first job in Northern Wisconsin, every game felt like a long trip, and you end up feeling like you live on a bus. In addition to these challenges, there are fewer opportunities for competition and development. While urban areas have more local competition and opportunities for pickup games, rural areas lack these advantages. Even with the rise of AAU basketball, rural areas still struggle to find regular competition. Coaches in these areas often have to create their own opportunities for their players to improve. Overall, the main obstacles in rural areas are interest in the sport, travel, and limited opportunities for competition. These challenges require coaches to be resourceful and dedicated to building their programs despite the difficulties. Thank you for listening. Hundreds of Beavers is a callback to slapstick comedies like classic WB Looney Tunes cartoons. It's full of live-action wacky pratfalls, ridiculous situations, and a healthy dose of beaver-related mayhem. Shot on a micro-budget of $150,000, Hundreds of Beavers was made with passion, creativity, and a whole lot of beaver costumes. Director Mike Cheslik and cinematographer Quinn Hester and most of the cast and crew are all from Wisconsin, where Hundreds of Beavers was shot. Everyone was comfortable with snow, loved physical comedy, and had the desire to make a film that would stand out as a true indie. After first meeting at the Milwaukee Film Festival in 2018, Mike called Quinn in October, 2020 to ask if he'd DP the film during the winter in zero degree weather. “It couldn't have been anybody but Quinn because he's just a tough guy and he's used to the winter,” says Mike. In total, the film took about 8 weeks of shooting with a core crew of about 4-6 people over the course of two winters. The main location was a remote cabin in Northern Wisconsin. “We're out there in the elements. It's very rare to be on a production where you are not only making a movie and having to use all your energy, focus and creativity and meditate on how to accomplish certain looks and goals and shots,” says Quinn. “But you're also trying to not die. All of us almost died at least once.” To make Hundreds of Beavers, Mike spent years creating extensive storyboards and animatics. “People could watch the animatic on the DIT computer and they could also see the boards in my binders that I was carrying around,” he says.”But it still takes a lot of explaining and there's a lot to wrap your head around because there's so much in this movie. It is a lot. I was just thinking about it nonstop for years. And then just doing my best to explain it to the team. I was always surprised how much trust we got.” The film is very effects-heavy and made to look old-timey in grainy black and white. “The freedom of picking a grainy black and white style, it frees you up to tell a bigger story and to have bigger visual ideas. This style gave us permission to work that way in the modern day,” says Mike. Since they were shooting in the winter, they would have to wrap by 4:30 pm. Mike imported everything into Adobe After Effects and edited with Adobe Premiere every night. That way, Quinn and the crew knew exactly what they needed by the next day. Quinn shot on a Panasonic LUMIX GH5 camera that worked well even in extremely cold weather. All the footage could easily be imported into Adobe Premiere and After Effects. Hundreds of Beavers is still playing in select theaters and is tons of fun to see with a live audience. Go to the Hundreds of Beavers website to find cities where it's playing. https://www.hundredsofbeavers.com/ Hundreds of Beavers is also available to rent on Amazon and Apple. This episode features Scott Perlick of Perlick Distillery. The Perlick family and their ancestors have been farming the land in Northern Wisconsin since the 1920's. It is a small county with about 17,000 people and two stop lights. They farm over 2,000 acres growing a wide variety of plants and grains. Scott and the family discussed what they would be able to do with the grain on their farm and making something of it. The began to distill alcohol and figure it out as they went. The research from what they wanted to persue came from visiting breweries and distilleries that were not too far away. Initially for Perlick the focus and mindset has been on making vodka. "If we can't make it with making vodka, we shouldn't be in this business", Scott proclaimed. Their vodka has been a huge hit statewide. They also produce a five year single malt and an incredible maple vodka.
