Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Saturday, March 23, 2024. Blennerhassett Island may be a beautiful park to visit, but it also boasts a fascinating history. A popular brewery in Morgantown expands. And learn about Chef Boyardee's West Virginia connection…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE HISTORY PROJECT – In the middle of the Ohio River between Parkersburg, West Virginia and Belpre, Ohio, sits Blennerhassett Island, a place named for the Anglo-Irish gentry who built their estate there in the 18th century and named it for themselves. But this paradise would not last after the arrival of Aaron Burr … Learn more about Blennerhassett Island with The History Project, the Daily304's presentation of famous people, places and events that shaped West Virginia. Then plan a visit to Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park when the park opens for the season in May.  Read more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=9SxdBF2F82tG57HN&v=q6U2SQBxDr8&feature=youtu.be    #2 – From DOMINION POST – Chestnut Brew Works, a staple of the Morgantown microbrewery scene for over a decade, completed a long-anticipated expansion last month with the launch of Chestnut Beer Hall at 132 Pleasant St. Owner Bill Rittenour and his team transformed the former Black Bear Burritos into a space woven with local talent, history and flavor. Local artist Brian Pickens contributed freehand wall art that evokes the crisp, green taste of hops. Pickens also painted the support posts running down the center of the space to look like vibrant tree trunks. Local craftsmen Scott Frederick and Michael Barr created high-top tables using now-rare Chestnut lumber reclaimed from an old church in McDowell County. Rittenour took some of the same lumber and made one-of-a-kind tap handles replete with Appalachian history. The Beer Hall will feature 10-16 Chestnut Brew Works beers on tap. Cheers! Not only that -- he has West Virginia connections. In the early 1900s, The Greenbrier was managed by the same company that managed The Plaza Hotel in New York City, according to historian Bob Conte. When they sent staff down to The Greenbrier, among that staff was 16-year-old Ettore Boiardi, anglicized as “Hector Boyardee.” A native of Italy, Boiardi worked as an apprentice chef in his hometown and in Paris and London before boarding ship for Ellis Island in 1914. He eventually worked his way up to Head Chef at The Plaza Hotel, where he served President Woodrow Wilson and troops returning from WWI. After serving a stint at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, Boiardi opened his first restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio, where patrons frequently asked for samples and recipes of his spaghetti sauce. He met Maurice and Eva Weiner, owners of a local self-service grocery store chain who helped Boiardi and his brother Paolo develop a process for canning and distributing spaghetti sauce. In 1938, production was moved to rural Milton, Pa., where its products were sold under the “Chef Boy-Ar-Dee” brand. And the rest, they say, is history. On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised (for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles), — Galatians 2:7-8 CALL OUT: Call out today to Brian Lydick from Belpre, Ohio. Thank you for sharing your testimony and God's divine intervention in your wife's life. Paul's point here is very positive. It is that they, Paul and Peter, are two men preaching the same Gospel called to two different spheres of influence by one Spirit as agreed upon in the meeting at Jerusalem. Paul is advocating for unity in the Gospel by the Spirit. Not a unity that ignores heresy or apostasy. A unity of effort that is true to the Gospel message that invites the one Spirit to reach many different people. This accentuates the point that, as believers, we need to try to work out our faith together. God gave us life. We are redeemed by Jesus. The Holy Spirit sustains us all. He gave us one message and one Gospel. Therefore, we have an obligation to work out his life together with others, even if it's hard. In light of everything our Trinitarian God has done for us, we, too, should reflect his unity, even though we have differing spheres of influence. This means I should celebrate and support what God is doing in other believers, churches, and ministries that align with God's message, God's Son, and God's Spirit. So, if this is you today, here is my prayer for you: God, you have so many God-fearing, Gospel-centered, Spirit-led ministries in this world today. Each is doing your work for your glory. Today, I ask for your blessing on all of them. Today, as we are led by your Spirit, I ask that you do a mighty work in us together. Amen. #UnityInTheSpirit #EmbracingDiversity #OneGospelManyCallings #CelebratingGodsWork #SpiritLedMinistries ASK THIS: How can we actively support and celebrate the work of other believers, churches, and ministries that align with the Gospel message, even if their spheres of influence differ from ours? In what practical ways can we demonstrate unity amidst diversity within the body of Christ, ensuring that our efforts reflect the message of God's love and redemption to the world? DO THIS: Pray for unity in the Gospel. PRAY THIS: Father, thank You for the diverse ways Your Spirit moves among believers, uniting us in purpose despite our different callings. Help me to actively support and celebrate Your work in others, reflecting Your unity and love to the world. Amen. PLAY THIS: Together.

In the small Ohio town of Belpre, Ohio, is a lady with two charming offices on each side of the Ohio River.  Charm galore and backed up by a mature engaged businesswoman, Marian DuVall, Broker/Owner of  EXIT Riverbend Realty has built an enterprise to envy.  I am always amazed at how our small market offices fare against all the large brands, and in Marian's case, she's scaring the big boys for sure.   At Broker/Owner training or Master Broker Summit, Marian is there soaking it all in and when she speaks we listen because her confidence and strength demand it. In this episode, Marian explains her approach to having strong administrative help, technology engagement and then being selective to hire the best folks in town. Her total focus is on being the real deal in caring service to clients, community and her team.  Marian's is a big story from a small town.

The S&P 500 recently closed over 3,000 for the first time ever. And it begs the question, "Is this the top of the stock market?"  At least one large money manager thinks stocks are headed higher.  Much higher.  We talk about that on today's episode of What's Happening now.   We have been following First Trust Portfolio's commentary for some time.  You can read their post about their increased forecast and the methodology they use, here.  As most of you know, we are not in the prediction business.  And most who are, have limited success.  But it rarely stops anyone from trying.    The stock market will either go up or down from here.  The only way we will know who guessed correctly is to wait and see.  We rarely take any of them to be reliable indicators of future performance. We are certainly hopeful the S&P 500 passes the 3,250 mark.  But if it doesn't, we won't be surprised. What's Happening Now: The New DNA Testing Scam

There is a new DNA testing scam targeting retirees. We'll talk about how they are doing it and what you can do to protect yourself on this episode of What's Happening Now. Consumer Level DNA Testing Over the past few years, there has been a rise in consumer level DNA testing. It has centered around finding out where in the world your family originated. Companies like Ancestry.com and 23 and Me have made these tests readily available. Also, 23 and Me has an option where you can find out more about certain genetic health conditions. This can help you determine if you at risk for certain hereditary diseases. The New DNA Testing Scam We received a notification from the Ohio Department of Insurance about a new DNA Scam. They target retirees and in some cases bribe them to complete DNA tests. And they try to convince their victims Medicare will pay for the tests. They try to get critical information from you. They ask for your Medicare number and your Social Security number. Except, Medicare, will only pay for the DNA test if they are medically necessary. Sharing your Medicare or Social Security number can lead to identity theft. Protect Yourself Here are some steps you can take to protect yourself. 1. Consult Your Doctor. Ask your physician if they believe a DNA test would be beneficial. If they believe it will, have them order the test. They will refer you to a reputable lab for the test. They will also be able to submit the request to Medicare. 2. Use one of the known consumer providers. We don't have any experience with 23 and me. And we cannot attest to their services or the results they provide. But they should be able to provide you some information at a published cost. And they should be able to do it without obtaining your Social Security number. 3. Do Not Share Your Information You should not share critical information with people you do not know and trust. When someone has information like your Social Security number and date of birth, they can do a lot of damage. Guard this information carefully annd only share it with trusted sources. 4. Check with people you know and trust. If you get a call like this, get the name of the company, a phone number, and the name of the person calling. Then do some research. Call your family, call your doctor, call us before you proceed. Let those around you help you do the research before you jeopardize your identity.  Neal Watson is a Certified Financial Planner™ Professional and a Financial Advisor with Fleming Watson Financial Advisors  He typically works with people who are planning for retirement.  Fleming Watson is a Registered Investment Advisory firm located in Marietta Ohio.  Our firm primarily serves Marietta, Parkersburg, Williamstown, St. Marys, Belpre, Vienna and the surrounding communities in Washington and Noble Counties in Ohio and Wood and Pleasants county in West Virginia.
