In a brand-new series for this fall, pastors Erica, Sarah, and Steve are exploring what is sometimes called "the Mandela effect"--those times when people collectively believe they remember things a certain way, only to discover they have all misremembered, forgotten, or embellished how things are. (The name comes from a classic example, where many people around the world believed they remembered South African president Nelson Mandela having already died years before his actual death.) Well, it turns out that people do it with the Bible ALL the time. A classic example happens every year around Christmas time, when people retell versions of the Nativity story with a grouchy and occasionally miserly (almost Scrooge-like) innkeeper character who turns away Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem. But it turns out, not only is there not actually any mention of an innkeeper, but the word translated as "inn" actually means something more like "guest room" or "spare room" in a family house. What's really going on in Luke's story of the birth of Jesus, and how did we collectively invent both an "inn" and an "innkeeper"? That's the conversation we're exploring this time here on Crazy Faith Talk!

The takeaways from this episode:We cannot answer the question, “What DOES this passage mean (for us)?” until we first seek an answer to the question, “What DID this passage mean (for the author and original audience)?”The problem in the story Aprile reads is the "interdimensional superbeings" failing first, to understand what a political cartoon IS and second, to see the political cartoon through the eyes of the original artist and audience. We do this with the Bible ALL the time, particularly the parts of Scripture that heavily employ imagery and metaphor (which is a LOT of Scripture). Here's the link to Joshua Porter's book:(This is an affiliate link, so Her God Speaks makes a small commission if you use it.)Death to Deconstruction: Reclaiming Faithfulness as an Act of RebellionInstagram // Website // Shop//Donate

Mark 4:35-41 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don't you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” The storm had convinced them they were about to die, and they had forgotten Jesus was who he was! When the disciples tried to control their own situation things were spinning out of control, but as soon as they released control of the storm over to Jesus, everything became calm. You need to take responsibility for your life, but only God can take control of your life. Principles: 1.We work, He rests! 2.He works, we rest! -If we don't start our day (in the morning!) with the Lord, it is too easy to get off track and forget who's really in control -Jesus says to the storm, “quiet be still“ That should be something we remind ourselves daily. Be quiet and still and ask the Lord how you should proceed. -even if you are a pastor, you still need rest. Jesus was resting in the boat. We all need rest. -The only thing we should labor for is to labor to enter into his rest. Rest in his presence and depend on him. It's God's Grace, and it doesn't depend on what we've done for it. It is about what God has done for us. Don't fall into works thinking that you need to do things for God to earn his grace. -Jesu's message to us: “come unto me, all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest for your souls. My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” God offers us the peace that passes all understanding even in the middle of our storms and struggles. -> This has to be an every day surrender of your life and your burdens to the Lord. -> remember Jesus is always sleeping in your boat ready to wake when you call on him. -in the midst of uncertainty, the only thing that we can cling to is remembering that God is in control. -from Bible: “All things work together for good for those who love, and are called according to his purpose” -this is a tough one to remember because sometimes the things that are “working out to be good” may not feel good in the moment. -don't try to take the wheel of control from God because it is exhausting for us to be in control. Turn it all over to him and surrender the outcome! -at the end of the day, lay your day down at God's feet in surrender. Give it back to him. -Jack shares some of his early journeys before he knew the Lord, and was driving too fast in all areas of life, and was even having heart troubles because of stress. He noticed an immediate change when he came to know the Lord and he finally had a peace about him that he had never known previously. (From Jen: it has not been so immediate for me, I still find myself worrying from time to time, and have to lay this down daily and ask for God‘s peace. But I am hopeful that I will get to a place like Jack, where the peace is my natural first response to stressful situations because of my trust and dependence on the Lord.) -Don't trust in your own knowledge or abilities or personal connections. Trust in the Lord as your provider. -peace in this worldly element is connected to the physical world, but the peace from the Lord is connected to eternity. ***Happiness is circumstantial, but joy is eternal. -Mickey recants that he had the most peace he had ever experienced when he was in the midst of the most physical distress in the hospital after his skydiving accident. -Scripture: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path. -often times in church they don't talk about the supernatural side of our faith. We can agree that the Lord arose from the grave, and that he healed the lepers, and that miracles happened in the Bible, but we struggle to imagine that it could happen today and that God could control our lives if we let him. Jesus fed the 5000, healed the 40, taught the 12, but only invited 3 into the garden. ->The closer we get to our destiny, the smaller our circle of people needs to be. ->Guard your circle or you will never find rest. -> And God needs to be the main center of those primary relationships. Surround yourself with people who are also trying to be Christlike. Trouble sleeping? Listen to the audio Bible as your trying to fall asleep. Try it for one week and see how you sleep. Jerry Bridges – “the worst days are never so bad that you're beyond the reach of God's grace and help, your best days are never so good that you're beyond the need of God's grace and help.“ -> Don't forget to ask him for his help and grace and then listen and do as He tells you. “No matter what you think, you've survived you worst day” God wants to take people out of the storm of life and put them into peace and calmness that can't be explained by the natural. Many of us have “friends“ and acquaintances, but have very few true confidants, and we find ourselves feeling very lonely. Jesus is a friend that will always stick very closely to you. -> He will never leave you, for sake you, or let you down! All you need is Jesus! He's the only one you can trust all the time! If you're lonely, reach out to Jesus, and use his name! He really is your friend even though you can't see him. “Jesus I want you!” Instead of talking about how big your storms are, focus on how much bigger God is. Praise and release your faith! Declare victory and favor over your storms and walk in faith like you believe God will actually move on your behalf! “Thank you God that your favor will turn this situation around! Thank you that your favor is making a way even though I can't see it right now.” Even when you can't imagine how things could possibly work out, God does. The one is resting during the storm also has the power to calm the storm.

Quick! Grab your tongue and listen to this from the Bible: “All of us get tripped up in many ways. Suppose someone is never wrong in what they say. Then they are perfect. They are able to keep their whole body under control. We put a small piece of metal in the mouth of a horse to make it obey us. We can control the whole animal with it. And how about ships? They are very big. They are driven along by strong winds. But they are steered by a very small rudder. It makes them go where the captain wants to go. In the same way, the tongue is a small part of a person's body. But it TALKS BIG. Think about how a small spark can set a big forest on fire. The tongue is also a fire. The tongue is the most evil part of the body. It makes the whole body impure. It sets a person's whole way of life on fire. And the tongue itself is set on fire by hell. People have tamed all kinds of wild animals, birds, reptiles, and sea creatures. And they still tame them. But no one can tame the tongue. It is an evil thing that never rests. It is full of deadly poison.” That's James 3:1-8 Okay, you can let go of your tongue now if you're still holding it. Did you know that your tongue can get you in to trouble? These verses say that our tongues are evil and full of deadly poison. Woah! Why so much hate for a tongue? Well it's because with our tongue, we are able to talk. And you probably know by now that our talk, the things we say, can be dishonest and wrong or hateful and mean or even bring harm to others. You might think that something you say is not that big of a deal, but our words have POWER and we don't always use it for good. In fact, these verses said our words can be like a spark that starts a forest fire. ... So what else? Well, Luke 6:45b says, “For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” This means that what we say is actually overflowing from our heart. Think of a bucket full of water, that's our heart. And when the water fills up so much it's overflowing, those are our words. So whatever is in our heart, overflows in the things we say in our words with our tongue. So how do we tame or control the tongue? We start with the heart. And that's a job that only Jesus can take on. When we give our heart to Jesus and let Him be ruler of our life, He starts to change our heart. He does the work with His saving power! And when He changes our heart, it changes everything about us – especially our tongue and the things we say. So instead of walking around all day holding on to our tongue to keep it under control, let's ask the Lord to change our heart. Because when He changes our heart, then good, loving, life-bringing words will overflow and come out of our mouths. Here are some questions to talk about. You can pause after each question and discuss. Oh, and there's not wrong answer to these. So don't overthink it! 1. Tell about a time when your tongue or words got out of control. And this is a free zone answer time, parents don't get your kids in trouble with their answer! Just listen! 2. What does our heart have to do with our tongue or our words? 3. How do we tame our tongue and get it under control? One last time before we sign off, let's practice our verse together. You can repeat after me. “For out of the overflow of his heart - his mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45b You've been listening to Backseat Bible Nuggets. This is another episode in our How to Read the Bible Series. Today Tim and Jon discuss literary design patterns in the Bible. In part 1 (0-12:27), the guys discuss the ways Bible stories often pattern after each other. Tim explains that he is working on a project with other Bible scholars studying how many biblical stories build on each other. Tim says many Bible stories are set up in parallel, to replay key themes the writers are trying to make. Jon provides a real life example of Toy Story 3. The Toy Story 3 writers watched dozens of prison break movies in order to write the “daycare/prison break out” scene in Toy Story 3. Tim says that’s a good example of a layering technique being used in modern day. The classic prison break is layered into a children’s movie. In part 2 (12:27-19:15), Tim says the biblical authors were very intentional about building an entire universe of meaning in the biblical stories themselves. There are thousands of hidden “hyperlinks” of key repeated words, phrases and repeated characters that link all Bible stories together. There is no such thing as an isolated story in the Bible. An example of Bible stories linking together is David and Bathsheba and the eating of the apple in Genesis. In Hebrew, it says “(Bathsheba) was good of sight, very.” Tim says this links back to Adam and Eve seeing the “fruit was good of sight” which links back to God saying things were “good, very good.” So the reader is supposed to ponder upon who decides what “good” is in these stories. David? God? Adam and Eve? In part 3 (19:15-26:46), the guys dive into the creation story at the beginning of the Bible. Tim says Genesis 1 is set up in a very unique way. Tim says the fundamental image of chaos is dark, untamed waters. Jon offers an interesting comment about a new shark species that was recently discovered in the dark ocean. Tim outlines the first three days as the separation of realms. (Day 1) separating light from dark, (day 2) separating water from water, (day 3) separating water from dry land. Then the next three days, 4,5,6 are the creation of inhabitants of the realms in the first three days. In part 4 (26:46-35:18), Tim says, the creation account is presented in such a way that God separates the chaotic waters to create a stable habitation where humans can live. Thinking about the Biblical authors desire to layer stories on each other, Where else does this theme of God separating waters appear in the Bible? All over the Bible. The story of Noah is depicted as the “de-creation” of the world. The world sinks back into “chaotic waters.” God remembers Noah and causes a “ruach to to pass over the land” just like the original creation story, he is separating the waters from the land and re-creating a habitation for humans. In part 5 (35:18-end), Tim asks Jon “what was God doing with all this separating?” Jon and Tim discuss how the cause of creation descending back into chaos is human evil. Humans choose violence, bringing the world back to a place where God turns it over to chaos. The next story where God tames the waters to rescue his people is the Exodus story. God “remembers Israel” when they cry out about their oppression in Egypt just as he “remembers Noah”. Tim says when Israel crosses the Red (Reed) Sea, it merges days 2 and 3 in creation. Moses splits/separates the waters to reveal dry land. Israel also passes through the waters, saved by God, just as Noah passed through the waters, saved by God. Jon asks what’s the purpose of telling stories like this is. Jon is confused, is salvation really this complicated? What does all this mean for the modern person? Tim tells Jon to be patient, and that the ultimate end of the flood and water imagery in the Bible is the Christian tradition of baptism. Thank you to all our supporters! You promise yourself you're going to read the Bible ALL the way through in 2012...and you don't. Or worse, you promise someone else they can count on you no matter what...and then don't exactly live up to the pledge. Peter was a man who knew the raw emotions of letting someone else down...someone who really mattered to him. In this message, Brian Hull offers all of us the encouragement that comes by simply following Jesus.
