From the quiet charm of Montesano to the heart of Music City and now center stage in the Pacific Northwest, Brian James has followed the melody wherever it's led and it's made for one unforgettable soundtrack. In this episode of the TLC Tend Life Community Podcast, we sit down with the singer-songwriter whose path has taken him from penning tunes in Nashville to becoming a beloved local performer in Woodinville and the Pacific Northwest. Brian talks about how his small-town upbringing shaped his storytelling, how writing for major publishing houses (and even Cadillac commercials!) transformed his creative approach, and why the Pacific Northwest feels like home. We talk crowds, community, the magic of live music, and yes, the occasional gig-gone-wild story that every musician seems to collect. And it wouldn't be an episode without a little wine and a live performance! For this week's Sipping on Success, we uncorked a bold and delicious Black Tongue Syrah from Stevens Winery right here in Woodinville, an ideal pairing for Brian's soulful sound. Stick around until the end, where Brian treats us to a live acoustic performance that's sure to strike a chord. This episode is part concert, part conversation, and all heart. So, grab your glass, turn up the volume, and settle in, it's time to get in tune with local icon Brian James.

Hey everybody! Episode 151 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Brian James. Brian now has the distinction of being the first guest to be featured three times on this podcast. I brought Brian on to speak about his new book, Traumadelic. I was really happy to have Brian on again to speak about how he sees the overemphasis on trauma, and the more Western psychological model as whole, is potentially taking away from the richness and vastness of the more traditional shamanic experience. As plant medicine work moves in the Western mainstream, it is understandable that it will adapt and be incorporated into Western ways and cosmovisions. However, this does not come without cost, often severely limiting in scope and potentiality the benefits of both plant medicines and the traditional ways of working with them. This may be a controversial topic to some, as much of this has become a new dogma, but, as we speak about, heresy is rarely accepted with open arms and ultimately a pursuit of truth, however uncomfortable, is to be valued. I trust this conversation will be enlightening and shift some views that we may hold or not even realize that we are holding.

Today we have the pleasure of talking to Brian James. At 16 years old, Brian had already found himself wrapped up in a life of gangs, drugs and incarceration, following a childhood surrounded by addiction and abuse. By 17, he was sentenced to life in prison. Over the following two plus decades, Brian continued to seek validation and acceptance in violent and self-destructive places, furthering his addiction and ultimately spending 9 years in solitary confinement. He pinpoints the overwhelming loss of his closest loved one, his grandmother, along with changes in the law that provided him hope to one day be released from prison, as his catalysts for change. In his 30's, Brian finally dedicated himself to his sobriety, understanding his emotional landscape, and committing to the hard work of self-exploration and accountability. After spending 29 years in prison, Brian has now been free for 874 days. He has a special talent for articulating what he has felt for so much of his life, and we hope you connect to his journey to find redemption and healing. Thank you for sharing your truth Brian!

Alan Lee Shaw in conversation with David Eastaugh English guitarist whose career began after leaving art school, in music projects with Twink. He later formed short-lived The Rings with 'Twink' Alder & drummer Rod Latter, before he and Latter created punk band Maniacs with bassist Robert Crash. In 1977 Shaw created glam-punksters Physicals, who released a single, with Paul Cook on drums. This was followed by stints in Brian James' "Brains" and "The Hellions" (managed by Miles Copeland) from 1980. During 1981, Shaw teamed up in a writing partnership with Kirsty MacColl. During 1983 there was another brief band, "Hush Hush" with Chris Sol. Then, with Sol, the eponymous band album "Heaven And The Angels" in 1986 and a later shelved UK project with Dee Dee Ramone. Another brief spell with a Brian James band was followed by Shaw joining The Damned in 1993.
