Fighter pilots have “Top Gun.” Race car drivers have “F1” and “Days Of Thunder.” What movie did firefighters have up until 1991 to put their heroics on full display? Nothing. Absolutely nothing, until a director, mostly known for making comedies, decided that firefighters finally get their day in the sun. That director was Ron Howard and the movie that helped the aura of firefighters burn so bright is the movie I'm reviewing in this episode of Movies Merica. That movie is “Backdraft.” Kurt Russell and William Baldwin play Stephen and Brian McCaffrey, two brothers who grew up in a family of firefighters in Chicago. To put it mildly, they don't like each other very much. Stephen is a veteran firefighter and Brian is his younger brother still trying to carve out his niche in life. Brian decides his latest venture is to go into the family biz and fight fire too. Add to the family friction, a series of mysterious deaths due to fires, that may or may not be murder. Many of you have seen this classic, but for you of those who haven't, is it worth checking out? Watch this episode of Movies Merica to find out! “Backdraft” also stars Robert De Niro, Donald Sutherland, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Scott Glenn, Rebecca De Mornay, Jason Gedrick, J.T. Walsh, Tony Mockus Sr., Cedric Young, Juan Ramirez, Kevin Casey, Jack McGee and Mark Wheeler. Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

This week on Horror Hour with the Hanna's, we journey into Alex Garland's Annihilation (2018), a surreal and unsettling blend of science fiction and horror. Starring Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the film follows a team of scientists who enter “the Shimmer”—a mysterious, expanding zone where nature and biology mutate in eerie and violent ways. We break down the film's hypnotic visuals, cerebral storytelling, and existential themes of self-destruction and transformation. From the infamous bear scene to the unforgettable finale, Annihilation is equal parts terrifying and mesmerizing—a modern cult classic that pushes the boundaries of genre. We also compare it to the 2014 Novel.   Follow Us on Instagram and TikTok: @horrorhourwiththehannas   Music by Aries Beats - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPpnxLYrzVA

Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay set the mood by putting on Side 1 of Zeppelin IV, so they can talk about the classic high school comedy 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High.' Bombay starts it off by remembering the time(s) he finished embarrassingly quickly just like Mike Damone when he got a chance with Jennifer Jason Leigh's Stacy. Then the fellas head over to the pool to chat about Phoebe Cates' legendary topless scene that broke VCRs throughout the '80s as being the most rewound scene in the home movie rental era. Besides the nudity, the film had plenty of laughs, and insights to offer about the teenage experience, and gets remembered for crude moments, but packs a wallop emotionally. Lost in the fray is the fact that this raunchy teen comedy written by a very young Cameron Crowe was directed by a woman. The guys relate to their own high school experience of skipping classes and working crappy retail jobs at the mall, and of course they make time for Sean Penn's surfer burnout Spicoli.

Long before 'Waiting For Guffman', Christopher Guest directed 'The Big Picture', a heartfelt, hilariously incisive movie about making movies. The film was greenlit during British film executive David Puttnam's brief tenure running Columbia Pictures.  Co-written by Guest's 'Spinal Tap' co-star Michael McKean, who also turns in an unexpectedly warm and heartfelt performance, 'The Big Picture' is worthy of rediscovery for its impressively spot-on send-up of both Los Angeles and the studio executives who populate the business. The Hateful Eight is a visually stunning, well-acted, and tension-filled Western, but its indulgent pacing and familiar storytelling keep it from reaching Tarantino's best work. Feeling old yet, Slackers? When we were young, there were so many movie stars—and not just the Brat Pack. Sean Penn, Kiefer Sutherland, and Elisabeth Shue come to mind. Fast forward to today, and these former young heartthrobs and beloved teen idols have become Hollywood royalty, winning some of the industry's most prestigious awards, including Golden Globes, Academy Awards, Emmys, and Tonys. Movies like TAPS and Fast Times at Ridgemont High boast numerous award winners, including multiple Oscar wins. While Sean Penn received recognition fairly early in his career, actors like Christian Slater and Jennifer Jason Leigh didn't receive any significant award buzz until 30+ years into their careers. Though I'm an avowed Ferris Bueller hater, it was still pretty cool to see Alan Ruck (Cameron) receive nominations for his role on Succession.Although I don't typically pay much attention to award shows, I'm rooting for Demi Moore to finally win the big one for her role in The Substance. We dive into how these stars have evolved—not just in their careers, but in their artistry—transforming from iconic teen roles into multi-award-winning performances. We explore their journeys from being the faces of an era to becoming respected actors and performers across different genres. It's fascinating to see these once-young stars redefine what it means to age gracefully in Hollywood while staying relevant, admired, and celebrated.

We're slap bang in the middle of 16th Century Europe where violence and assault run rampant across these lawless lands. Mercenaries are storming castles and war is rife in the region. This is the landscape of Paul Verhoeven's fantasy/romance/drama: FLESH + BLOOD.It's definitely an oddly placed film that's home is undetermined for an audience. Its lack of success when it was released is evidence of that. It's a bit messy. It's a bit uncomfortable. It's a bit uninspiring. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay grab their blankets and microphones and head to a haberdashery to discuss 'The Hateful Eight.' Andy puts the stew on then tells a story about the time school was cancelled so he went to a friend's place for some extracurriculars, and the party quickly spiraled out of control. Then the boys sit down and get cozy to talk about one of the great winter movies that fully captures the feel of being stranded in a snowstorm. Even though the flick is a chamber piece it features some of Quentin Tarantino's most stunning photography capturing the snowy vistas. Afterwards, the movie with a gargantuan runtime settles into a whodunnit for the ages filled with vile characters. Centering around the capture of the always-great Jennifer Jason Leigh, the cast is uniformly great including a scene-chewing Walton Goggins, and a curmudgeonly Bruce Dern. On top of being beautifully shot and wonderfully acted, the movie is bolstered by a wonderful score. The fellas get movie geeky and discuss how the film's Oscar win for the score was a vindication for a genre masterpiece. Overall, the movie is a degen classic filled with mean bastards, and mean bastards, you need to hang.
