Lucy Fenwick Elliott talks to director Bart Layton about his new film, Crime 101. Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, Crime 101 weaves the tale of an elusive jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose string of heists along the 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime, his path crosses that of a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads. Convinced he has found a pattern, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) is closing in, raising the stakes even higher. As the heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are faced with life-defining choices–and the realization that there can be no turning back. Adapted from Don Winslow's acclaimed novella of the same name, the film is written and directed by Bart Layton (American Animals, The Imposter). Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte round out the cast. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Follow us on Spotify. Siedemnastowieczni holenderscy nawigatorzy z Willemem Janszoonem na czele dotarli do nowego lądu, sporządzili pierwsze mapy wybrzeża i nazwali tę ziemię, Nowa Holandia. W XVII i XVIII wieku skazańców wywożono do dwóch niedawno odkrytych Ameryk, szczególnie do Północnej. Po amerykańskiej rewolucji prawo zakazało wywózki więźniów do Stanów Zjednoczonych. Wtedy postanowiono kolonię w Australii zasiedlić skazańcami. 1 maja 1787 roku z Portsmouth, pod dowództwem kapitana Arthura Phillipa wyruszyła tzw. First Fleet. „Jim Jones at Botany Bay” to australijska tzw. „busz ballad” z początku XIX wieku. Jej narrator Jim Jones zostaje uznany za winnego kłusownictwa i skazany na transport do kolonii karnej, oczywiście w Nowej Południowej Walii. Po drodze jego statek zostaje zaatakowany przez piratów ale uzbrojona załoga pokonuje napastników. Jim Jones zastanawia się, czy nie wolałby przypadkiem dołączyć do piratów niż udać się do przeklętej Botany Bay. Tam czeka go ciężkie życie pełne harówy. I taką romantyczną historię opowiada nam właśnie ballada „Jim Jones at Botany Bay”. Sail Ho Audycja zawiera utwory: "Jim Jones At Botany Bay" w wykonaniu Jennifer Jason Leigh, słowa i muzyka: tradycyjne "Ballada o Botany Bay" w wykonaniu zespołu Cztery Refy, słowa: Anna Peszkowska, muzyka: trad. (oryg. "Jim Jones At Botany Bay")

How does your reader know why your protagonist does what she does? This seemingly minor detail is one of the most important parts of your story and the way you let the reader know about it is through the hero's monologue. What aspect of your protagonist is hidden from her, from your reader, or both? If you want to create a main character with dimension and an arc, then understanding her shadow is key. The hero's monologue and the shadow are our study topics in this brand new season of the podcast. Enjoy! - V. Nick joins the show for the very first time. Jake talks to him about theatre, film, and eventually, the sometimes forgotten Coen Brothers classic, The Hudsucker Proxy. How does it hold up? And why is Jennifer Jason Leigh the best part?
Fighter pilots have “Top Gun.” Race car drivers have “F1” and “Days Of Thunder.” What movie did firefighters have up until 1991 to put their heroics on full display? Nothing. Absolutely nothing, until a director, mostly known for making comedies, decided that firefighters finally get their day in the sun. That director was Ron Howard and the movie that helped the aura of firefighters burn so bright is the movie I'm reviewing in this episode of Movies Merica. That movie is “Backdraft.” Kurt Russell and William Baldwin play Stephen and Brian McCaffrey, two brothers who grew up in a family of firefighters in Chicago. To put it mildly, they don't like each other very much. Stephen is a veteran firefighter and Brian is his younger brother still trying to carve out his niche in life. Brian decides his latest venture is to go into the family biz and fight fire too. Add to the family friction, a series of mysterious deaths due to fires, that may or may not be murder. Many of you have seen this classic, but for you of those who haven't, is it worth checking out? Watch this episode of Movies Merica to find out! “Backdraft” also stars Robert De Niro, Donald Sutherland, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Scott Glenn, Rebecca De Mornay, Jason Gedrick, J.T. Walsh, Tony Mockus Sr., Cedric Young, Juan Ramirez, Kevin Casey, Jack McGee and Mark Wheeler. This week on Horror Hour with the Hanna's, we journey into Alex Garland's Annihilation (2018), a surreal and unsettling blend of science fiction and horror. Starring Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the film follows a team of scientists who enter “the Shimmer”—a mysterious, expanding zone where nature and biology mutate in eerie and violent ways. We break down the film's hypnotic visuals, cerebral storytelling, and existential themes of self-destruction and transformation. From the infamous bear scene to the unforgettable finale, Annihilation is equal parts terrifying and mesmerizing—a modern cult classic that pushes the boundaries of genre. We also compare it to the 2014 Novel. Follow Us on Instagram and TikTok: @horrorhourwiththehannas Music by Aries Beats - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPpnxLYrzVA
Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay set the mood by putting on Side 1 of Zeppelin IV, so they can talk about the classic high school comedy 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High.' Bombay starts it off by remembering the time(s) he finished embarrassingly quickly just like Mike Damone when he got a chance with Jennifer Jason Leigh's Stacy. Then the fellas head over to the pool to chat about Phoebe Cates' legendary topless scene that broke VCRs throughout the '80s as being the most rewound scene in the home movie rental era. Besides the nudity, the film had plenty of laughs, and insights to offer about the teenage experience, and gets remembered for crude moments, but packs a wallop emotionally. Lost in the fray is the fact that this raunchy teen comedy written by a very young Cameron Crowe was directed by a woman. The guys relate to their own high school experience of skipping classes and working crappy retail jobs at the mall, and of course they make time for Sean Penn's surfer burnout Spicoli.
This week, the boys grab a few beers and head back to 2018 to catch up on what was happening the year “Annihilation” came out, before diving into a discussion about re-watching Alex Garland's follow-up to his 2015 hit “Ex Machina”. Dave owns the film, John has seen it 3 or 4 times but the time lines get blurred (movie reference), and Jeff hasn't gone back since his shimmery experience in the cinema summer 2018. We're hitting August, and it's all about the FEMALES: which means we're covering films with "FEMALE" in the title. And if you couldn't get enough of individuals assuming someone else's identity in one episode, wait until you get your eyes on SINGLE WHITE FEMALE. Following in the footsteps of THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, we replace opulence and popularity with questionable haircuts. They really test the limits of Bridget Fonda's attraction factor by giving her a haircut similar to Guy Gardner's from SUPERMAN, but you will be surprised how well this hair performs. There's very little to say about this film that hasn't been said already as one of the prime examples of the Erotic Thriller genre. This is a good one!
This week Megan took in the latest movie featuring Pedro Pascal looking comfortable in any setting: THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS (2:18). Evan and Dave watched the dark comedy OH, HI! (16:37) with Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman, and all three Spoilerpiecers saw HOUSE ON EDEN (43:33), a found-footage horror movie written, directed by, and starring Kris Collins, and co-starring Celina Myers. Over on Patreon, we talk about the July poll winner, MIAMI BLUES, starring Alec Baldwin, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Fred Ward.
Eric, Jeff, Sheek, Styles and Jadakiss got together in Yonkers to break down The Hateful Eight, the 2015 American western thriller film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh. We discuss acting ciphers, modern cowboys, whether counterfeits are allowed, the idea of justice, Sam Jackson's cinematic catalog, Quentin's liberal writing, and much, much more! PLUS: Is Jadakiss Italian!!! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The story so far: After being trapped under ground for over a year in a mysterious movie store called "Moleman's Movie Hole," the boys still find ways to entertain themselves...typically with movies. This week, Eric's back! And after mistakingly grabbing the wrong movie off the shelf, we sit back to watch the 1986 horror/thriller classic The Hitcher! Come for the discussion on the greatness of Rutger Hauer, stay for the tangents about Eric's hitchhiking stories, where bodies would realistically get torn apart, and Dan's cool wife and their Niagara vacation! Hop in, we're taking a ride together! Leave us a 30 second voicemail and if we like it we'll play it on the show: (949) 4-STABBY (949-478-2229)Next movie announced every Wednesday. Nick Chapman is a film student who suddenly hits it big in Hollywood, and finds out how much of a curse that is. The directorial debut of Christopher Guest is a sly satire of filmmaking that has a surprisingly sweet center. Starring Keving Bacon, Jennifer Jason Leigh, J. T. Walsh, and Michael McKean. Written by Christopher Guest, Michal McKean, and Michal Varhol. Directed by Christopher Guest.
"My mother told me never to do this." When are we going to listen to our moms, people? The 1986 cult classic, The Hitcher, not only put the fear of hitchhikers in us, but also the fear of cops, German Shepherds, and even french fries. Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell share the front seat of this dark thrillride with more than one gross-out moment. But now, decades of defeated horror villains later, what's left to be afraid of? Is there any suspense to be had when you can just drive away? And are the cops in this movie more vicious than the hitchhiker? The Old Roommates thumb through it all with their middle-aged lens on high alert. Join them for a ... side-splitting conversation. Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. Not exactly a “horror movie” but 1989's Last Exit to Brookyn is a study of horrible people doing horrible things. Based loosely on Huber Selby Jr.'s 1964 novel, this bleak study in brutality tells a story of Brooklyn's savage underbelly. Directly by Uli Edel, it features some familiar faces including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Stephen Lang, Burt Young and Jerry Orbach among others. Intro: “Necromaniacs” – Mike Hill Outro: “The Butcher”– Leonard Cohen
NostalgiaCast turns up the heat as Paul of The Countdown Podcast joins our latest '90s Bucket List episode for a fiery discussion of BACKDRAFT, starring real-life stuntmen Kurt Russell and William Baldwin, plus Robert De Niro, Donald Sutherland, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Grab your boots, gloves, and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus as Paul, Jonny, and Darin obsess over the pyrotechnics, melodramatics, and classic Hans Zimmer score that brand Ron Howard's 1991 firefighter thriller.
Long before 'Waiting For Guffman', Christopher Guest directed 'The Big Picture', a heartfelt, hilariously incisive movie about making movies. The film was greenlit during British film executive David Puttnam's brief tenure running Columbia Pictures. Co-written by Guest's 'Spinal Tap' co-star Michael McKean, who also turns in an unexpectedly warm and heartfelt performance, 'The Big Picture' is worthy of rediscovery for its impressively spot-on send-up of both Los Angeles and the studio executives who populate the business. The film stars Kevin Bacon, McKean, J.T. Walsh, Emily Longstreth, an uncredited Martin Short, Fran Drescher, Jennifer Jason Leigh. You can watch the film here. For our "Two Shot" episode featuring New York City movies, Emilio, Julian and Madeline welcome on Mariquita Reese, fellow cinephile and cohost of Post Film Clarity, to talk two recent NYC based films about late night desperation that sends characters racing around the boroughs - the Safdie Brothers' 'Good Time' from 2017 and Sean Baker's 'Anora' from 2024, the current Best Picture winner. The group discusses the depths of Connie's ineptitude and audacity, the ugly truths that the Safdies wanted to keep in the film, the shifting nature of power in both these films, compelling casting choices, why these bummer endings are actually pretty good, Mikey Madison's mastery of insulting with a Brooklyn accent, the going rate these days for a farm in Virginia, how DVD commentaries can redeem a bad movie, why Dick York is the superior Darrin, and much, much more!
