Fighter pilots have “Top Gun.” Race car drivers have “F1” and “Days Of Thunder.” What movie did firefighters have up until 1991 to put their heroics on full display? Nothing. Absolutely nothing, until a director, mostly known for making comedies, decided that firefighters finally get their day in the sun. That director was Ron Howard and the movie that helped the aura of firefighters burn so bright is the movie I'm reviewing in this episode of Movies Merica. That movie is “Backdraft.” Kurt Russell and William Baldwin play Stephen and Brian McCaffrey, two brothers who grew up in a family of firefighters in Chicago. To put it mildly, they don't like each other very much. Stephen is a veteran firefighter and Brian is his younger brother still trying to carve out his niche in life. Brian decides his latest venture is to go into the family biz and fight fire too. Add to the family friction, a series of mysterious deaths due to fires, that may or may not be murder. Many of you have seen this classic, but for you of those who haven't, is it worth checking out? Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay set the mood by putting on Side 1 of Zeppelin IV, so they can talk about the classic high school comedy 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High.' Bombay starts it off by remembering the time(s) he finished embarrassingly quickly just like Mike Damone when he got a chance with Jennifer Jason Leigh's Stacy. Then the fellas head over to the pool to chat about Phoebe Cates' legendary topless scene that broke VCRs throughout the '80s as being the most rewound scene in the home movie rental era. Besides the nudity, the film had plenty of laughs, and insights to offer about the teenage experience, and gets remembered for crude moments, but packs a wallop emotionally. Lost in the fray is the fact that this raunchy teen comedy written by a very young Cameron Crowe was directed by a woman. The guys relate to their own high school experience of skipping classes and working crappy retail jobs at the mall, and of course they make time for Sean Penn's surfer burnout Spicoli. 

This week, the boys grab a few beers and head back to 2018 to catch up on what was happening the year “Annihilation” came out, before diving into a discussion about re-watching Alex Garland's follow-up to his 2015 hit “Ex Machina”. Dave owns the film, John has seen it 3 or 4 times but the time lines get blurred (movie reference), and Jeff hasn't gone back since his shimmery experience in the cinema summer 2018. We're hitting August, and it's all about the FEMALES: which means we're covering films with "FEMALE" in the title. And if you couldn't get enough of individuals assuming someone else's identity in one episode, wait until you get your eyes on SINGLE WHITE FEMALE. Following in the footsteps of THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, we replace opulence and popularity with questionable haircuts. They really test the limits of Bridget Fonda's attraction factor by giving her a haircut similar to Guy Gardner's from SUPERMAN, but you will be surprised how well this hair performs. There's very little to say about this film that hasn't been said already as one of the prime examples of the Erotic Thriller genre. This is a good one!

The Hateful Eight is a visually stunning, well-acted, and tension-filled Western, but its indulgent pacing and familiar storytelling keep it from reaching Tarantino's best work. If you love his signature style and slow-burn narratives, this may be a rewarding experience. For others, it might feel like an overly long exercise in self-indulgence.

Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay grab their blankets and microphones and head to a haberdashery to discuss 'The Hateful Eight.' Andy puts the stew on then tells a story about the time school was cancelled so he went to a friend's place for some extracurriculars, and the party quickly spiraled out of control. Then the boys sit down and get cozy to talk about one of the great winter movies that fully captures the feel of being stranded in a snowstorm. Even though the flick is a chamber piece it features some of Quentin Tarantino's most stunning photography capturing the snowy vistas. Afterwards, the movie with a gargantuan runtime settles into a whodunnit for the ages filled with vile characters. Centering around the capture of the always-great Jennifer Jason Leigh, the cast is uniformly great including a scene-chewing Walton Goggins, and a curmudgeonly Bruce Dern. On top of being beautifully shot and wonderfully acted, the movie is bolstered by a wonderful score. The fellas get movie geeky and discuss how the film's Oscar win for the score was a vindication for a genre masterpiece. Overall, the movie is a degen classic filled with mean bastards, and mean bastards, you need to hang.
