Singer/songwriter and Pittsburgher Brooke Annibale has a new album, "Better By Now," out now - and she'll be at Club Cafe in South Side on Oct. 23rd.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Brooke Annibale over Zoom video.Montego Bay, Jamaica raised vocalist, songwriter and producer Hezron Clarke released his album, M.O.A.M. (Man on a Mission), via Tad's Record (Ernie Ranglin, Tanya Stephens). Recorded in Reggae's birthplace, Kingston Jamaica, M.O.A.M. features some of Jamaica's greatest musicians including Dean Fraser (saxophone), Kirk “Kirkle Dove” Bennett (drums), Donald “Danny Bassie” Dennis (bass), Mitchum Khan (guitar), Carol “Bowie” McLaughlin (keyboards) and Robbie Lyn (keyboards). On a lyrical front, the album embodies feel-good vibes with motivational and inspirational concepts that encourage patience and resilience. With inspiration from classic soul artists such as Luther Vandross, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, to 90's favorites KC and Jojo and Dave Hollister to iconic Jamaican singers Beres Hammond and Dennis Brown, Hezron has embodied his own classic vocal and musical style while taking notes from some of the greats. Hezron released his debut album The Life I Live(d) on Tad's Record in 2015. His return to the label with M.O.A.M. unites two established Jamaican brands, each committed to proving that quality reggae with the potential for widespread global appeal is still being made in the music's birthplace. Although many younger Jamaican artists embrace trap and hip-hop over indigenous reggae and dancehall, a stark contrast to the proliferation of young American reggae bands, especially in California, Tad's Record founder Tad Dawkins is determined to see Jamaican reggae restored to prominence internationally. It's an objective he firmly believes will be fulfilled with the release of M.O.A.M. We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Brooke Annibale over Zoom video.Indie singer/songwriter Brooke Annibale released new album Better By Now through Nettwerk Music Group. A fearless new collection of songs, Brooke has both emboldened her sound on Better By Now as well as entered a new phase of life after making significant strides in her mental-health journey and saying “I do” to her wife. “I wrote this song in early January 2021,” stated Brooke. “We had literally just put the christmas tree out on the curb, and I felt this terrible sentimental feeling for it. This was also the same week as the Capitol attack. We had pushed through 2020, looking at 2021 as some kind of savior, but once it arrived nothing really changed. There was still the same intensely hostile political discourse and the pandemic continued raging on. It felt like things were getting worse somehow, when I hoped for it to be better by now. Reflecting on that time, it taught me that expecting a perfect external outcome will not lead to feeling better. I've got to do the internal work to have any kind of peace with the roller coaster of life.” Produced by Christian “Leggy” Langdon (Joseph, Amos Lee) and Matthew E White (Natalie Prass, Dan Croll), Better By Now features 10 blossoming indie-pop tracks that Brooke describes as a “spectrum of emotions.” In her trademark layered approach, the Pittsburgh-born, Rhode Island-based artist reflects on love, anxiety, depression, and how two seemingly opposing forces can exist at once. “The album is basically half about falling in love and half about mental health.” Earlier this summer, Brooke teased a couple songs from her new album, including the “immediately catchy” (FLOOD) lead single “What If You” and the “soaring, ethereal pop song” (Brooklyn Vegan) “5 AM” accompanied by the Genéa Gaudet-directed video. In celebration of Pride Month, Brooke also shared an inspiring op-ed via Atwood Magazine on representation, equality, authentic connection, and her journey to self-acceptance. Brooke's expressive and beautifully thoughtful songwriting creates a dreamy and enticing sonic landscape. We want to hear from you! I first met Brooke in 2017, and she played our house later that fall. She has one of those voices that grabs you, and she adds to that great songs and guitar with groove. In my opinion, she straddles folk and indy pop and does so with ease. She is also a fantastic human, and we have been fortunate enough to run into her over the years. We start our conversation--as all of ours do during this time--on the pandemic, and then cover songwriting and her musical influences and background. https://www.brookeannibale.com/ (https://www.brookeannibale.com/) Check out her https://www.hellomerch.com/collections/brooke-annibale (merch page). We have a couple of her albums on vinyl, and highly recommend.
Welcome to We Wonder: Lent. Today is Ash Wednesday, the very beginning of the season that helps us get ready for Easter. Just as Israel wandered in the desert for forty years, and Jesus fasted in the wilderness for forty days, we will spend the next forty days walking with Jesus toward the cross. “Lent” is also an old English word for “springtime.” This is the season when the earth begins to come back to life after winter. Ice melts, the earth thaws, and things that were dead begin to bloom and grow again. During Lent, we name the things in our hearts and in our world that are dead, and we wait to see how God will raise them to new life with Jesus. Join me, as we watch, and wait, and hope in God. Today is Ash Wednesday: the day when we remember that we are like ashes. Without Jesus, we are like fires that have gone out. Scripture passage: Psalm 51:1-6, 10-17 I wonder if I have ever felt like a blown-out candle, or like cold ashes that can’t spark to life? What do I want to say to God about that? I wonder if God is still close to me when I feel far away? I wonder if I can trust that faithful love is always waiting for me? David says to God, “you will gladly accept a heart that is broken because of sadness over sin.” I wonder: what things do I see in myself and in the world that break my heart? Can I trust God to be kind to my sad heart? Lent happens in springtime: the earth that was frozen and dead blossoms into life again. Dry, helpless seeds are planted in the ground, and plants push up out of the ground. Jesus goes into the grave, and is raised to new life. It is a time of sadness for all that is wrong in us and in the world, and also of hope that it can all be made new. Can I ask God to come close to me in the sadness? Can I ask God’s Spirit to whisper words of hope to me in the dark? Closing Prayer: Open our lips, O God, and our mouths will proclaim your praise. Create new hearts in us, O God, and renew us and our world. Give us the joy of your saving help again, and sustain us with your Spirit who breathes life. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Our theme music is by Schwarzsound; other songs are “Trace”, by Roary and “Hold to the Light,” by Brooke Annibale. Indie singer/songwriter, Brooke Annibale's evocative musicianship, nurtured by her family's music store, is driven by an enduring passion for songwriting. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Brooke's maternal grandfather opened a music retail and live-sound business in the 1960s, which is still family-run today. When it comes to songwriting, Annibale started young, writing as a 3rd grader, but really began taking music seriously as a teenager. Annibale took that passion for songwriting and performing to Nashville, where she earned her degree in Music Business at Belmont University. Not wanting to be boxed in by a traditional music program, she was drawn to a more business oriented major that aligned with her entrepreneurial spirit. Her songs have been placed on popular TV shows like 'Vampire Diaries' and 'Pretty Little Liars.' And, even though Brooke has recorded CDs in Nashville, she is still a Pittsburgh girl. There's grit in the upper Midwest. She stopped by Beehive Studios in Saranac Lake, New York, in October 2015 to talk about her musical decisions and sing a few songs from her album, 'The Simple Fear.'
