Indie duo Driftwood Choir, featuring Portair and Ed Prosek, are gearing up to release their debut self-titled album on March 7th and I'd love to have you check out the release! The duo and Nettwerk labelmates joined forces after bonding over a spirit of wanderlust, creating an uplifting album about change, and connecting with nature and people. Driftwood Choir cements the musical union of two curious creative spirits, whose songwriting eloquence and acuity matches their clear proclivity for adventure. Born in California and based in Berlin, Ed instantly hit it off with the Australia-born Drew (aka Portair), bonding over a spirit of wanderlust both personally and sonically. Two distinct paths brought Ed and Drew to Driftwood Choir. Ed had attracted a fervent fanbase with a series of solo EPs, including The Riverbed [2014], Truth [2016], Light as a Feather [2019], and The Foreigner [2023]. Hailing from the other side of the world, Drew built a devout audience under the name of Portair, captivating with The Light That Gives EP [2021], The Ice That Breaks EP [2022], and Learning How to Die EP [2023]. During the fall of 2023, the duo met in Berlin where they linked up for a drink and made a decision to hit the studio together. During their first proper session, the musicians cooked up “Constantinople.” It eventually amassed over half-a-million streams. Inspired by this newly unearthed working relationship, they kept going. Now, the pair is forging a path together emerging with their debut album out 2025. Thanks for listening!!! For more than a decade, a life-affirming spell seems to enchant every audience the band plays to. It's why THE STRIKE have been booked for weeks-long residencies from Dubai (at the behest of music legend Quincy Jones) to China (at the massive Qingdao Beer Festival). Back home, they have an appeal that's lured some fans to travel across continents to see them, and others to get Strike-themed tattoos. Music supervisors have followed in kind, using their songs on Dancing With the Stars, America's Got Talent, and Netflix's To All The Boys I've Loved Before. Which is to say: If the name The Strike doesn't ring a bell, there's a good chance you've actually heard their music.None of this good fortune is lost on the L.A.-based group, which also includes drummer Jay Tibbitts and singer Chris Crabb. And this is why their third album, A Dream Through Open Eyes (out October 4th, Nettwerk), was created with the goal of capturing this phenomenon of intoxicating folks wherever they go. We had the pleasure of interviewing Great Good Fine Ok over Zoom video!LA-via-Brooklyn synth-pop sensation Great Good Fine Ok has unveiled their latest musical endeavor, EXIST EP, via Nettwerk. The EP features the new single/music video “Led Me To You,” propelled by an infectious groove and soaring vocals. The EXIST EP features a collection of colorful, groove-laden tracks that establishes Great Good Fine Ok's innovative blend of synth-pop, showcasing their ability to create upbeat melodies and compelling lyrics. A sprawling voyage that transcends sonic boundaries and explores the multifaceted aspects of existence, the EP is another testament to the duo's growth as artists and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of the genre, while balancing both introspective and uplifting material. The latest single "Led Me To You," is driven by catchy hooks and dynamic production. With “Led Me To You,” the snappy groove uplifts another towering display of vocal fireworks. The track explores themes of resilience and finding love in unexpected places, as explained by lead single Jon Sandler, “To a degree, everyone experiences trauma. Most people do find happiness in relationships, so it's a healthy way to look at it, ‘Hardship led me to you'.”"Breathing" is a sonic journey through pulsating basslines, simmering drums, and wah-wah groans, all set against a neon-hued backdrop. The track encapsulates the band's signature blend of groovy yet sonically dynamic elements, creating an immersive and infectious musical experience. Paired with “Breathing” is a stunning music video directed by Zebulon Griffin (Jonah Kagen, UPSAHL) and the team at Columinati Films (Griffin, Cory Messer, Robyn Griffin). The visuals explore the surreal scenario of people continuing with mundane tasks amidst a crumbling world. A satirical portrayal of human indifference, the clip invites viewers to consider the possibility of alternate realities through vibrant neon portals."Will We Make It?" demonstrates a revitalized soundscape of Great Good Fine Ok, blending warbling vocals with bass-y synths that are sure to entice listeners. Behind the lush and otherworldly production is multi-instrumentalist Luke Moellman, whose spacey production adds depth and dimension transporting listeners to a sonic realm where emotion and music collide in new and enthralling ways. The track features hypnotic high register gliding over a bridge that sets the stage for Sandler's emotionally charged plea, "I really need to know right now, will we make it?" This lyrical exclamation delves into the uncertainty that often accompanies today's complex world of relationships and connections with a relatable perspective. With “Blame,” a soft piano underscores breathy verses only for the momentum to turn on a dime into a funkified, falsetto-powered hook backed by steady handclaps, strutting guitars, boisterous horns, and a disco beat practically tailormade for Studio 54 (as re-conceived in the metaverse). The tender finale “Make This Moment Last” sees the duo lace a head-nodding bounce with raw vulnerability. “It's about losing someone and being nostalgic,” shares Sandler. “If you had more time, you feel like you'd appreciate it more.We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing nobody likes you pat over Zoom video!Saint Paul, Minnesota-based artist nobody likes you pat, the moniker for singer-songwriter Pat Kiloran, is thrilled to share his new EP dear… via Nettwerk. Known for his moving melodies and stimulating lyrics, Pat brings a renewed introspective and intimate quality to his latest project. dear… is a collection of close-to-the-vest tracks that encapsulate the multifaceted experiences and emotions that not only has shaped Pat's musical journey, but his personal one as well. After exploring new sounds and ideas, nobody likes you pat found himself at a crossroads, realizing that his true artistic essence lies in his blunt-yet-gentle narrative-driven lyricism. Inspired by this revelation, he embarked on a journey back to his roots, crafting songs that resemble intimate letters to his loved ones. From his wife to his best friends, his sons, and even to God, nobody likes you pat's dear… EP is a self-sacrificial presentation of the realities of life and its relationships. Following his time as frontman of acclaimed band Milkk, he launched nobody likes you pat in 2021 with a pair of fan favorite EPs, namely, now that I'm here, i feel like myself EP and spinning EP. Signing to Nettwerk, 2022 saw him unveil his full-length debut imago. During the creative process of making imago, Pat had spent a lot of time thinking of his family and friends. In his case, those thoughts turned into breezy, bold, and bright indie pop anthems rooted in relatable Americana-style storytelling and stitched together with homegrown production. nobody likes you pat has garnered 12M+ cumulative streams and has been featured on Spotify's Next Gen Singer-Songwriters, Warm Fuzzy Feeling, and Sommer Chillout playlists. Leading up to the release of last year's imago, Pat carefully and quietly assembled a collection of songs that would eventually serve as the dear… EP. The nice folks at Nettwerk Music Group reached out about the possibility of doing some guest mixes and I am pleased to present the first one. This mix comes to us from TJ Dumser who releases music under the moniker, Six Missing. He has a new album coming out in December so the timing is perfect. I'll let TJ tell you about his mix: "Listening to music always makes me transport to another place. And whenever a piece of music can make me travel to a place that elicits a vivid scene within my mind, I love it even more. Every time I sit and write a piece of music, I am always allowing it to take me somewhere, and then my goal is to try to capture that like a polaroid and develop it as quickly as I can so that the imagery is imprinted firmly within the makeup of the piece. Misty Morning is a collection of tracks both old and new that allow my mind to travel. Within this mix I've included pieces from not only myself (and an unreleased sneak peak), but from other artists I respect and love. Each track on here hits you with emotion and vibe instantaneously. There is no build-up for these. With each new piece you are gently guided along what I envision being the most perfect and slow morning with a cup of coffee as you watch the mist and fog rise up from the serene mountains behind your home. Or perhaps you are drifting in and out of sleep on an airplane or in a car. But you could also be seated and just merely listening. Regardless, these pieces aim to lift you up and out of your thinking mind and usher you into the beloved "in-between." While making my latest record "Here For Now," which comes out December 15th via Nettwerk, I was listening to artists that use sounds masterfully - Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Visible Cloaks, and Nils Frahm all are within complete and total control of their voices and I found that incredibly inspiring as I was working to find my own voice. It is with great humility that I place my own music amongst artists such as Mort Garson and Ólafur Arnalds as well as the ever blissful Eydís Evensen. But thankfully, it seems to all feel like they belong there. I had a great time designing this curated vibe-adventure for you and hope you find some new artists you've never heard before as well as some old favorites. Thank you for listening." We had the pleasure of interviewing Oliver Hazard over Zoom video!Waterville, Ohio indie-folk outfit Oliver Hazard captivates listeners with their unique blend of delicate arrangements and sturdy melodies on their new self-titled album released today with Nettwerk. Listen to the album that's sure to win hearts with its introspective lyrics. The album is the work of 3 individual singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, who share an organic connection in the craft -- sensibilities that yield music that's harmonic, haunting and also ambitious and surprising. "This album feels different than anything we've done in the past. We're very simple people, all three of us. I think the album reflects that, and I hope it captures something you probably can't describe yourself, but that speaks to you,” the band shares. “And as far as the message, it's just shared experiences.”About Oliver Hazard:The story of Waterville, OH indie-folk trio Oliver Hazard - Michael Belazis (vocals, guitar) and Devin East (vocals, guitar), joined by Nate Miner (keys, vocals) - is the digital age's version of classic band mythmaking. One member of the band came home to Ohio after leading camping trips in California and decided to make an album with two childhood friends. They won a Facebook raffle to record one song at a studio. Instead, they played their whole album straight through once, resulting in their debut LP 34 N River (2018). The Fader called the album a “folk-pop masterpiece” and the band was booked at Bonnaroo and Mountain Jam shortly thereafter. In 2019, the band released their 6 track EP, The Flood, which Billboard called a “souvenir.” This brings the band to their sophomore, self-titled album (July 2023), featuring music from the band's recent Northern Lights EP, plus five additional songs. We want to hear from you! Miya Folick - So Clear from the 2023 album Roach on Nettwerk. Los Angeles-based musician Miya Folick released her sophomore full-length ROACH in late May, an album that unpacks “trying to get to the core of what life really is,” according to Folick. Following her 2018 debut Premonitions and 2022's 2007 EP, the album is full of rich, shimmery production with help from Gabe Wax (War on Drugs, Fleet Foxes), Mike Malchicoff (King Princess, Bo Burnham) and Max Hershenow (MS MR), heightening her quarter-life crisis to cinematic levels. Our Song of the Day, “So Clear,” is the moment Folick finally sees a way through the wreckage of prior mistakes. “I was desperate like you read in the paper,” she coos. “Screaming in oblivion /I was alone in a lonesome place /'Til I finally said I'm done.” Coupled with sun-drenched production from Hershenow, it's a classic movie-montage moment with our main character breaking through. Folick says this about the song: “‘So Clear' is about pulling yourself out of the wreckage you've made of your own life again and again, for the thousands of days we live on this earth and realizing life is so much more expansive than the petty concerns we waste precious time on. An epiphany that I have over and over again is that I am very small, but my actions are very meaningful. So I have to choose to live truthfully every day. It's not easy! The song is very dramatic, and I imagined it as a good karaoke song when we were making it.” Folick will be joining the Head and the Heart and Father John Misty for a North American tour starting in August, with a date in Spokane at the Pavilion at Riverfront on August 6th. We had the pleasure of interviewing Handsome Ghost over Zoom video!Massachusetts duo Handsome Ghost announced their third full-length self-titled album out August 25th via Nettwerk. The announcement arrives with their new single “Like You Lost Your Mind” along with a music video directed by Nick Noyes.Handsome Ghost's forthcoming album Handsome Ghost further cements the band in the alternative/indie space and is a beautiful body of work true to their authentic sound. At the same token, it's their most personally revealing album to date. The collection of songs touch upon the past, the good old days, the perennial ups and downs of not only being a musician but the trials and tribulations of adulthood. The record was born out of the pandemic, but its themes are universal and explore temporary happiness, fate, feeling out of sync, and mores crazy to do so.”Handsome Ghost released a trio of 2022 singles including “Figure 8,” “Heaven Isn't Long For You,” and “Neptune.” “Figure 8” is a darker effort from the band about a fictional day with Elliot Smith and pays homage to the artist's final full-length album of the same name. The dark lyrics and 90s-style electric guitar underpin the moody feeling of the track.“Heaven Isn't Long For You,” which was accompanied by Nolan Englund's directed music video, sets the tone with a delicate twang, layers of mandolin tracks, and acoustic and electric guitars that are perfectly tailored for a campfire sing along. On the narrative home front, “Heaven Isn't Long For You” bleeds into a diaristic tone, lyrics woven with the idea of an idyllic habitat that seems so close yet couldn't be further away.Handsome Ghost reemerged in late last summer with the release of “Neptune.” Powered by clean guitars, hushed vocals, and a plush ambience, the recent offering is sonically pieced together seamlessly and effectively. While intricately crafted arrangements and peaceful textures contribute to the song's alluring grasp, its lyricist Tim Noyes' delicate portrait of an enigmatic woman that keeps you sticking around. We want to hear from you! Host Paul Cardall has been a fan of singer songwriter Aaron Espe for more than two decades. The musicians discuss Aaron's unique gift of writing songs that reconnect adults to their childhood. They discuss Aaron's latest album, Up North, which explores his childhood in a small Michigan town where he would eat "Liver and Onions" just to be with his grandfather as well as get a haircut to see his uncle and barber Duane. They talk about his grandmother in a rest home called Sheltering Oaks, which he wrote a song about. Paul asks about being a father today and what Aaron is doing to help re-create a time of innocence for his four sons. They talk about getting the kids off the iPads to explore outside. The two discuss marriage and having wives who support an artist career and mentality. They also briefly talk about Deer Hunting as children, which Aaron wrote a song about. There was never a question that Ivy would make it, though they did so with many strokes of luck, good fortune, and heart ache along the way. With talented songwriters Andy Chase and Adam Schlesinger writing sophisticated pop songs showcasing their love of ‘80s and ‘90s UK music, the only thing missing was a voice to go with the sounds. Chase's girlfriend at the time (now wife), Dominique Durand, had moved to New York City from Paris to study fashion. While growing up in a house full of music journalists in France, Durand enjoyed the lifestyle and the personalities but never entertained the thought of taking center stage until she was reluctantly talked into it by Chase and Schlesinger. And the industry took notice. In the bumpy times of the mid-90s where labels were signing every band with a pulse, and subsequently dropping the ones that didn't meet sales targets, Ivy was the type of band to earn glowing reviews that didn't always translate to units shifted. 1995's debut Realistic was released by Seed Records. 1997's critically-acclaimed Apartment Life was originally put out by Atlantic Records and reissued the following year by 550 Music after Atlantic unceremoniously dropped the band while they were in the middle of a tour. Since that time, Ivy has released music on Nettwerk, Minty Fresh and, now, Bar-None, who is releasing Apartment Life on vinyl for the first time. For Chase and Durand, it's been a bittersweet few years as the rights to Apartment Life came back to the band shortly after Schlesinger passed away from Covid complications in 2020. We had the pleasure of interviewing Mokita over Zoom video.Nashville singer-songwriter-producer Mokita (aka John-Luke Carter) returns with his new single “Happiness” via Nettwerk. The candid track is complimented by a distorted bass line alongside a zestful production. Led by textured chill-pop and sweeping melodies, “Happiness” is brimming with introspective lyrics and fervent vocals. There's an honest delivery behind “Happiness” not only with its alluring soundscape but with its theme of not finding happiness but creating it. The track is a testament that happiness is not 24/7 or a light switch away and that the biggest takeaway is becoming content right now with yourself. In June, Mokita released his single “Crash,” in which he teamed up with rising artist Charlotte Sands. The track is about being stuck in a relationship with someone that you know won't last, it's not good for either of you, but you can't break the cycle of it. Directed by Ed Pryor, the music video makes references and callbacks to 80s movies and pop culture. We want to hear from you! Ben Zaidi - "Jerusalem" from the 2022 album Acre of Salt on Nettwerk. “What are you?” is an eye-rolling question people of mixed heritages never cease to get asked and often have no idea how to answer. Seattle's Ben Zaidi tackles his unique background and the internal conflict of not knowing how to identify in today's Song of the Day, “Jerusalem.” Born to a Jewish father, Pakistani mother, and with Muslim grandparents, Zaidi candidly unpacks his familial stories and the complicated feelings surrounding them in the downtempo guitar strummer. “Sometimes I feel like Jersualem /There's three religions trickling through my veins,” sings Zaidi in the chorus. “By the time they sort it out /There'll be nothing left to claim.” “It is a strange fate being of mixed heritage in the whitewash of America,” Zaidi explains of the song. “Often it feels like the many cultures of my ancestors have been diluted, and I have been left with no heritage rather than many... I am starting, however, to see this disorientation as an identity of its own. Manzur Zaidi was my grandfather I never met. He and his family were Pakistani, and lived through the partition of India... I use their Arabic family name and my Hebrew first name to try to combine the two lineages that most describe my parents. It was only later that I discovered 'Ben' means 'son.' and that 'Zaidi' is also a Yiddish word, for 'grandfather.'" The song comes from his upcoming debut album Acre of Salt, set for release on June 3rd. Produced by Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, Peter Gabriel, Beck), the record was recorded at Los Angeles' Sound City Studios along with backing band members Ethan Gruska, Sebastian Steinberg (Fiona Apple,) saxophonist Sam Gendel and Kane Ritchotte (Portugal. The Man). Watch the video for “Jersualem” at the link below. Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Pete Sears of Moonalice over Zoom video! San Francisco-based psychedelic soul group Moonalice is set to release their latest studio EP, ‘Full Moonalice Vol. 1', on the high holy day of April 20. The six song record is the group's label debut on Nettwerk and features the previously released single “Woo Woo” and an extended version of the band's first single, “Time Has Come Today.” ‘Full Moonalice Vol. 1' is their first full body of work since transforming into a ten-piece in 2019 through the addition of Lester Chambers and Dylan Chambers of the New Chambers Brothers, and Erika, Rachel, and Chloe Tietjen of the T Sisters. Today, Moonalice shares “Let's Get Funky,” the latest single from their upcoming EP. Mixed and mastered by 4x-Grammy Award-winning engineer Dave Way, “Let's Get Funky” is a fresh take on the Chambers Brothers' hit “Funky.” Originally released in 1970, the song was written by Lester Chambers, a co-founder and lead vocalist of the Chambers Brothers, who is now a member of Moonalice. “Funky” broke the Billboard Top 100 despite being deemed “too risqué of a song for the time,” explains the 81-year-old Chambers. Moonalice delivers a new version of the song with tight grooving from Pete Sears and John Molo on bass and drums, funky guitar riffs from Barry Sless, an electric synth solo by Jason Crosby, soulful harmonica playing by Lester Chambers, and lively backing vocals from the T Sisters and Dylan Chambers. Moonalice will spend the next few months on the road, touring across California, including festival performances at BottleRock and Skull & Roses. The group is also planning an extra special event in San Francisco to coincide with their annual 4/20 celebration. Stay tuned for more details and national headline dates to be announced soon.We want to hear from you! New Orleans' Seán Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band create a universal style of cross-cultural spiritual music filtered through the depth, sincerity, and soul of their own American and ancestral roots. Their music merges conscious lyrics, sacred chants from the spiritual traditions of yoga and beyond, and roots, rock, gospel, and global grooves. They are known for creating interactive, soul-stirring songs to dance and sing along with as well as to grieve and heal. In 2005, Seán founded the band as a post-hurricane Katrina philanthropic music project, raising funds across the country for relief from the devastation of the storm. The theme of searching for grace and inspiration amidst challenge and destruction has permeated their music ever since. In 2007, they released their first album, ‘Calling The Spirits' which caught the ears of pioneering Canadian record producer Terry McBride, founder of Nettwerk Records and Lilith Fair. McBride signed the band to Nettwerk for the release of their follow-up album, ‘Devaloka.' When Putumayo World Music founder, Dan Storper heard ‘Devaloka,' he chose music off the record to be featured on Putumayo's first compilation of music designed for yoga. Inclusion on three Putumayo albums has helped propel the band's music to listeners across the globe. Their last album ‘Unity' debuted #1 on the iTunes World Music Chart and #3 on Billboard. Their upcoming album ‘Mystery' will be released on October 29th on Be Still Records. They are a favorite headliner at conscious music festivals across the U.S. and have played The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on multiple occasions. In addition to being a musician, Seán is also a respected yoga teacher and teacher trainer who teaches at conferences and retreat centers internationally including Yoga Journal, Kripalu, Bhakti Fest, and The German Yoga Conference. He is the founder of Wild Lotus Yoga in his beloved hometown dubbed "New Orleans' Home for Heart-Centered Yoga," and Soul School, an interdisciplinary yoga teacher training program that focuses on teaching yoga with skill, heart, and imagination that he guides with Mitchel Bleier. He has a Master's degree from The Naropa Institute-Oakland with focus on teaching chant as spiritual practice, apprenticing there with south Indian musician and teacher Russill Paul, author of 'The Yoga Of Sound.' He is the co-curator and coordinator of Putumayo World Music's yoga music series. Seán is passionate about his Irish roots and ancestry, a pillar of his spirituality. He co-leads online Celtic Spirituality gatherings and retreats in Ireland each year with his friend, Ireland native Mary Meighan, founder of Celtic Journeys. In all these roles, Seán relishes creating a playful, tender, brave space for people to open their hearts and voices, and embrace their innate creativity. Our guest today is one Matt Wheeler. The terms "troubadour", "poet with a guitar", & "stage banter-conversationalist" all describe Matt Wheeler's music & performance style well. Matt's songwriting paints pictures with words. Matt has delighted audiences from New England to North Carolina, Ontario to Chicago. His new album "Wonder of it All" - a collection of songs based on classic works of literature like "The Little Prince" & "The Hobbit", was released on 5/21/21.For our conversation today, we are going to be discussing Ongiara “ahn-gee-AR-uh”, with a hard “g - the third studio album by Canadian folk rock band Great Lake Swimmers, released on March 27, 2007. The album was released on Nettwerk and the band recorded most of the album in London, Ontario's historic music venue Aeolian Hall with producer Andy Magoffin. For those wondering, Ongiara is the name of a boat that ferried the band to the site where they recorded the first demo. It's also the original indigenous name of Niagara Falls. Enjoy and thanks for listening!
This week, we bring you an intimate conversation with avant-folk instrumentalists and songwriting team Martin Earley (guitar, vocals) and Callie Peters (cello-vocals) - the driving forces behind New England's The Ballroom Thieves. Beginning as a hard-traveling duo, also featuring longtime percussionist Devin Mauch, over a decade ago at Stonehill College in Massachusetts, the band began to turn heads and fill rooms when they added Peters and her fierce and poetic singing-style around eight years back. The Queen-meets-Wings stacks of harmonies, gorgeous string arrangements and slam-poetry off-kilter lyrics instantly made them stick out from their gentler rootsy peers. They recorded the beloved harmony-drenched debut A Wolf In The Doorway in 2015 and followed up with their soulful, expansively electric Nettwerk debut Deadeye, which has been streamed over 50 million times and counting. A tasteful covers record followed as they established themselves as international festival favorites. 2020 was supposed to be a triumphant year for the group, but of course that's not how anything went last year, for anybody. Their playfully experimental and fearlessly political release Unlovely (your host Z. Lupetin's new favorite record of this fractious era) got buried in the late winter tumult of the new pandemic, forcing the group to call off all touring and shelving all promotion. Holed up at home, the chastened group hoped the world might discover the deliciously angular anthems like “Vanity Trip," “Homme Run” and the epic tempo-jumping opening title track (featuring fellow New England harmony-masters Darlingside) at a later, calmer date. The world has not gotten calmer of course. Earley and Peters had to push off marrying each other and percussionist Devin Mauch had to make the tough decision to leave the group and focus on his art career after a decade sharing stages across the world with his friends. Despite all this, our talk was an upbeat one. The group recently returned to performing live and sold out their hometown venue the Sinclair in Boston with an expanded group of musicians backing their ever-evolving sound. New music is on the way - but in the meantime, give yourself a day to sit with Unlovely: one of the true lost gems of the 2020 musical year.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Brandon Jenner over Zoom video! Brandon Jenner's music feels like a lot of different things—often all at once. In some ways, it's like your childhood best friend disclosing an important truth by the glow of a beach bonfire. In other ways, it's like the moment you stop worrying about what other people think and can laugh and smile anywhere without apology. However, the Los Angeles-born singer, songwriter, and producer describes what his music feels like best.“I try to make it feel like a warm, cozy blanket,” he laughs. “I hope I'm able to be that way in life as well!”'Music always gave him this warmth. With a singer-songwriter mom, he went from “being a fly on the wall” in his stepdad's studio (just Google his stepfather!) to developing his own relationship with music when Ben Harper's “Forever” got him through his first true breakup. After a pair of EPs and major syncs as one half of Brandon & Leah, he launched his solo career with the independent Burning Ground EP in 2016. The title track amassed over 26.5 million Spotify streams as he claimed coveted real estate on popular playlists such as Your Favorite Coffeehouse, License to Chill, and more. In between touring with the likes of Rachael Yamagata and Joshua Radin, he unveiled the Face The World EP [2018], Plan On Feelings EP [2019], and So Childish EP [2020]. After a whirlwind of gigs around the world, marriage, and the birth of his twin sons, he personally wrote, recorded, and produced his Nettwerk debut EP, Short of Home, in the middle of the Global Pandemic.Coupling life changes with a lifetime devoted to music thus far, he opened up like never before.“I think I've gotten better at giving myself the license to be truly vulnerable,” he admits. “It's about what the songwriter is willing to let the listener in on. I'm not trying to overcompensate for the blessings in my life anymore. I'm writing about the changes in my life. I wanted to go back to what got me to play music in the first place, which is singer-songwriters with songs that make you think and feel deeply. For the first time in a long time, I have a label partner too, and I'm really excited about that.”He introduces Short of Home with “Something About You.” Faintly plucked acoustic guitar wraps around his intimate delivery as he delivers a love letter to his wife.“The lyrics just seemed to roll out like a runaway train,” he says. “It was an overwhelming feeling that brought me to tears. I'm so happy and grateful. It captures my first impression of my wife and my love for her.”Originally penned in some “hipster-y hotel in New York,” slide guitar echoes underneath dusty verses on “There You Are” as his high-register hypnotizes on the hook.“It's mostly about how society forces us to lose sight of the fact the only thing we have is the present,” he admits. “We spend so much of our time planning for the future—which causes stress—that we spend very little time in the present. It's a reminder we have lungs that work and hearts that beat. You've got to silence the noise of society and be in the moment.”“Give It All You've Got” rides along on upbeat guitar towards an affirmation to “live life without filtering yourself through the opinions of others.” Then, there's “Life For Two.” Written at the request of a dying fan in Denmark, he gives her two children “a song about what their mom went through.” Everything culminates on “Wolves.” A piano-laden rumination, he croons a heartbreaking refrain, “No, you're not special to me anymore.”“It's the moment when you're over someone,” he comments. “It was written with a lot of emotion because it's what I was going through at the time. It's honest. I'm not trying to do anything other than express myself. I found myself in an energetic shift that needed to take place.”In the end, Brandon Jenner's music really feels like home.“In the past, I just wanted people to respect me as a musician,” he leaves off. “With my last name, it was something I was hung up on. I don't care so much about that anymore. What I really want is for somebody to feel the emotion I did—to feel better, safer, more inspired, and like the world has meaning. I went through so many challenges and changes and found relief. If you do as well, it's all worth it.”We want to hear from you! Whether it's on tracks like the Billboard-applauded “good”, the beautifully orchestrated “wish you well” (about the “tug of war” of letting go of past loves), the achingly reminiscent and sonically vast “london”, the hauntingly sparse “don't pick up the phone” or the new single “nothing but the love” (whose video drops today), ‘these words are all for you' showcases what has made Wrabel a go-to for heart-shattering slice-of-life songwriting about finding love, losing it, and discovering oneself throughout the journey.“I can't believe this is my debut album. It's been years in the making. The oldest song is around eight years old, and the newest, just a few months,” said Wrabel about the lifespan of the album's creation. “I poured everything into this record and I am just so proud of it. I feel so lucky to have been able to make it with people so close to me and as an independent artist on my own label partnered with Nettwerk. I always thought my first record would be a break-up record, since the first time I started making it it very much was. This album is filled with love. Hope. True stories and true feelings. I hope me sharing in this way helps even one person feel understood, feel better, feel like they're not alone, and it offers hope that love will come and bring the healing powers it holds.”The new video for “nothing but the love” (directed by Michael Thomas and featuring dancer Layne Willis) is gorgeously choreographed and feels like a spiritual reawakening. Watch HERE.Of the video, Wrabel said “Michael Thomas was such a pleasure to work with on this video. And Layne Willis, my goodness. I feel so lucky to have gotten to witness your incredible talent up close. This song is so close to my heart. The only song I wrote by myself on the record. With Michael's direction and Layne's emotive movement, we wanted to show that someone or something is showing me how to express myself, showing me the flow of expression. To mirror the love I am so grateful to have found.”Wrabel's resume speaks for itself. He has toured alongside and collaborated with P!nk, has co-writing/performance credits alongside the likes of Kesha, Marshmello, Celeste, Backstreet Boys, Ellie Goulding, Louis Tomlinson, Louis the Child, Wafia, Cash Cash, and more. He's released four previous EPs, has racked up 265 million streams across all DSP platforms, and his song “The Village” has become an LGBTQ+ anthem. Over the past few years, his “knife-to-the-heart” (Idolator) songwriting has led to him becoming “one of Hollywood's finest songwriters for a decade” (American Songwriter), earned him a performance spot on the national NBC TODAY stage and had Billboard saying that Wrabel is “ready for his breakthrough”.We want to hear from you! Long-time Artist manager, A&R executive and music festival relations executive Rachel Cragg - who has worked with musical artists ranging from Beastie Boys to Radical Face - joins Peter for a live CREATV U session and Q&A about her insights into the music business. Rachel discusses her "secret formula" for optimizing the chances of artists getting their songs heard (and building an audience) in our streaming-led world dominated by Spotify and others. She also discusses how she broke into (and succeeded in) the industry, how artists are coping during the pandemic's halt to all touring, and new ways for artists to engage with their fans and earn a living. This week, a cross-freeway conversation with a daring electro-roots outfit born and raised in the San Fernando Valley of LA: Run River North. Z caught up with frontman and lyricist Alex Hwang to discuss how this group of Korean-American friends came together nearly a decade ago (they then called themselves Monsters Calling Home) and found a waiting fanbase who eagerly embraced their emotive songs about immigrant family dramas done masterfully with acoustic instruments and a lush electronic backdrop. Early standout songs like “Growing Up” harnessed their nuanced classical chops and show how large the divide can be between their parents' and grandparents' view of America and how it really is for the new generation born and raised in LA. Gaining notice in Southern California's coffee shop scene, an unexpected live performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live (thanks to a beloved music video they shot in their Honda) shot the band to national awareness. Non-stop touring began in earnest with their gorgeous self-titled rebrand “Run River North” which got them signed to Nettwerk. It's no secret that the band is looked up to in the rarely-represented Asian rock and pop communities, and by 2016 Run River North was playing some of their biggest shows to date at festivals in Japan and South Korea. But with the realities of the road hitting hard, in 2018 the group pared down its lineup to what we see today, with founding members Alex Hwang (guitar/vocals), Daniel Chae (guitars/vocals), and Sally Kang (keys/vocals) leading the way forward. The last few years saw the band go independent again, and during the pandemic they have put out a flurry of hooky folk-pop gems, like the subversive “Pretty Lies,” that have them cautiously more excited about the future than ever. Stick around to the end of the episode to hear Alex present his favorite new single “Cemetery” about the off-kilter first date he took his now wife on. Their new full length Creatures In Your Head will drop early 2021.
Michael Corcoran - mtheory Today marks a new chapter, or rather, season, of Tough Love. We’re moving beyond our first season theme of “Origin Stories” and embarking on a theme, “Pivots”. To kick this off, I invited my old friend and former colleague from Nettwerk Management, Michael Corcoran , to join me. Michael is now at mtheory, an “artist management services” company of sorts, that amplifies and assists artist managers in marketing and developing their artists. He started his career out as a tour manager, before becoming an artist manager, where he worked with a wide array of various artists, including Jars of Clay, Alexi Murdoch, Alison Krauss, and Rosie Thomas and Landon Pigg, who we co-manged together at our time at Nettwerk. Michael’s career arc had him circling artist management throughout, and his insights into the business have become more refined now that he’s on the other side of the equation.
Gary Clail in conversation with David Eastaugh Became a warm up act for On-U gigs. Clail first released a record in 1985. Several 12" singles were issued between 1985 and 1987, before Clail's first LP for Nettwerk, Tackhead Tape Time, a split effort between Clail and Tackhead. "Television: The Drug of the Nation" by The Beatnigs was remixed by Clail, Adrian Sherwood and Mark Stewart, on the Alternative Tentacles record label in 1988. In 1989, Clail issued his own album, billed as Gary Clail & On-U Sound System, on On-U Sound, which marked Clail's entrance to the electronicunderground scene in Bristol, eventually leading him to work with RCA a couple of years later. This output incorporated several singles and EPs, as well as the Emotional Hooligan album (1991).
Our next guest is from Vancouver and studied at The Royal Conservatory of Music there. She later attended the Berklee College of Music. Recently, she wrote the music for an episode of Netflix's Moving Art entitled Hokkaido, National Film Board of Canada documentary Now Is The Time which premiered at Sundance, and she composed the music for Sony film The Broken Heart Gallery produced by Selena Gomez. On top of all that. she is one half of the electronic-pop duo darkDARK, signed to Nettwerk records and who's debut EP "Heathered" has been featured on NPR's All Songs Considered, Noisey, and Consequence of Sound, among other notable outlets. The composer is… Genevieve Vincent. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/composertalk/support
The first episode recorded for the season (but the fourth to be released) and obviously recorde when dat rona was not a concern on our radar, Kevin welcomes his former co-worker from a previous (and shitty) job, Renee Brown, to the podcast. In the tangential nature of the program, the two talk about a lot more than the eclectic mix of tunes Renee has provided—including the stress of buying concert tickets, feeling seen and attacked by Lana Del Rey, the pure joy that is Lizzo, and that you never really stop being an emo kid. Episode 18 credits: The intro to the episode featured an instrumental version of "Labels," performed by GZA/Genius, taken from the 2012 Get On Down/Geffen/Universal Music Special Markets release Liquid Swords - The Chess Box (Instrumentals.) The song originally appears on the 1995 Geffen Records release Liquid Swords. The theme music is a YouTube rip of the intro to BET's "Rap City: The Bassment," airing from 1999 to 2005. In today's episode, we discussed: "Summertime Sadness," written by Elizabeth Grant and Rick Nowels; performed by Lana Del Rey. Taken from the 2012 Polydor/Interscope release Born to Die. "Give a Little Love," written by Charlie Fink; performed by Noah and The Whale. Taken from the 2008 EMI release Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down.
