If you have ever looked at the food hashtags on Instagram, it doesn't take long until you feel hungry. But have you ever opened up the Deliveroo, Just Eat, or UberEats App to see the same big fast food outlets? If you are a food lover, you will probably want something more sophisticated or tastier than a Mcdonald's or a KFC. Father and son duo Brandon, CEO, co-founder, and the COO Jacob of Propagrub share their story on the Tech Talks Daily Podcast. I learn more about the technology behind a new food delivery service app that aims to create a community for foodies. Inspired by the impact of the pandemic and how it hit chef unemployment rates and the rise of small businesses selling goods through social platforms, Propagrub was born. The platform provides independent chefs and traders with new business and exposure. For food lovers, it makes food discovery easy. It also builds a foodie community where users can chat, and share food images, recipes, clips, reels, and experiences. Ultimately the love and passion for food. Brandon shares how he worked for 28 years as a chartered surveyor growing hospitality brands from one or two sites to 100+. His first client was Cafe Rouge who he began working in 1994, assisting in their expansion to 150 units in three years. Jacob brings Propagrub a wealth of experience spanning marketing technology, merchandising, operations, cryptocurrency, design, and development, having already run several start-ups in the past decade.

When it opened in 1919, the Hotel Pennsylvania was the largest hotel in the world. Over a hundred years later, its fate remains uncertain. Is it too big to save? After the Pennsylvania Railroad completed its colossal Pennsylvania Station in 1910, the railroad quickly realized it would need a companion hotel equal to the station's exquisite grandeur. And it would need an uncommonly ambitious hotelier to operate it. Enter E.M. Statler, the hotel king who made his name at American World's Fairs and brought sophisticated new ideas to this exceptional hotel geared towards middle-class and business travelers. But the Hotel Pennsylvania would have another claim to fame during the Swing Era. Its restaurants and ballrooms -- particularly the Café Rouge  -- would feature some of the greatest names of the Big Band Era. Glenn Miller played the Cafe Rouge many times at the height of his orchestra's fame. He was so associated with the hotel that one of his biggest hits is a tribute -- "Pennsylvania 6-5000." The hotel outlived the demolition of the original Penn Station, but it currently sits empty and faces imminent demolition thanks to an ambitious new plan to rehabilitate the neighborhood. What will be the fate of this landmark to music history? Is this truly the last dance for the Hotel Pennsylvania? boweryboyshistory.com Listen to the official Bowery Boys playlist inspired by this episode on Spotify. A conversation about Spencer’s life. If one thing rings out from Spencer's story it's the amount of hard graft he always put in. Join me to hear how he managed to turn an overheard conversation whilst serving customers in Cafe Rouge into a corporate job offer in London and, later, how a chance encounter with stylist Stuart Weir - and Stuart’s death thereafter - dramatically changed his life and set him on the road to becoming a photographer, founding and running his own production company, Still Moving Media. We hear tales of having one pressurised minute to get a perfect portrait of Hillary Clinton, nearly being decapitated whilst shooting an elite snowboarder on top of a mountain and how despite his obvious success he still battles with regular doubts and fears in trying to grow his business. This episode starts off with a song from James. It's quite the thing. James is here after a day of some quality DIY commitment, Sam is not loving beer, there's carbonara chat and cannelloni yap too. This is followed up with some ‘reopening of the pubs' discussion, Sam's father in law's digital sea sickness and the sad demise of Cafe Rouge. Before this week's guest arrives there's also some No Seat Christopher Nolan verbals and Sam has a weirdly erotic dream….. Praise be that aforementioned guest Jimi Famurewa shows up in the nick of time to talk lockdown, making his mum happy, Kid and Play, what the role of a food critic looks like post-pandemic and what happens when one Googles themselves. There's also time to discuss the fall of ex-Lucky Peach Editor Peter Meehan*, the hopefully inevitable fall of toxic food world twat energy culture and Jimi discusses what and where he feels his lane is in food writing. *To be clear, which this episode is not, (due to the loss of some audio to Zoom glitching), all three of us stand in complete sympathy and solidarity with anyone who had to deal with the grim sounding Peter Meehan. Listening back maybe it's not crystal clear but the part where I (Sam) said exactly that, has been lost to the digital ether and I wanted that to be made, if required, abundantly clear. Ta, and apologies for any confusion. This episode is sponsored by wine seat users dropwine.co.uk

This is part-two of a birthday salute to the late Glenn Miller. I have done other programs on the Miller band highlighting his hit recordings. On this edition of Big Band Bash I turned to a 2 CD set that I have that featured some of the early radio remotes by the band. Last time we heard a few remotes from the Paradise Restaurant in New York City and today we'll hear some remotes from the Cafe Rouge of the Hotel Pennsylvania and a 15 minute remote done over WEAF radio station. There is some good music on the show and most of the selections were never commercially recorded by Glenn. So we wish Glenn a happy birthday as he was born on March 1, 1904. I hope you'll join me in celebrating the birthday of Glenn Miller. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Miller played and recorded with the likes of Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey (who on several of their records, featured an up-and-coming singer by the name of Bing Crosby), Gene Krupa, Eddie Condon and Coleman Hawkins. In addition, during that time, Glenn cut 18 sides for Goodman, and also worked for radio studio conductors like Victor Young, Carl Fenton and Jacques Renard. In 1934, Miller became the musical director of the Dorsey Band, and later went on to organize The Ray Noble Orchestra, which included such players as Charlie Spivak, Peewee Erwin, Bud Freeman, Johnny Mince, George Van Eps and Delmar Kaplan, among others. the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band engaged in over 800 performances. Of these, 500 were broadcasts heard by millions. There were more than 300 personal appearances including concerts and dances, with a gross attendance of over 600,000. But Glenn was not to participate in the final six months of these activities. In the Fall of 1944, the band was scheduled to be sent on a six-week tour of Europe and would be stationed in Paris during that time. Miller decided to go ahead, in order to make the proper arrangements for the group's arrival. And so, on December 15th, Glenn Miller boarded a transport plane to Paris, never to be seen again.
