Our Featured Students are the winners of the Cesar E. Chavez Leadership Conference Legacy Challenge! Each year, our Migrant Education Program students attend the Cesar E. Chavez Leadership Conference at Western Oregon University. This year, due to COVID-19, the planning committee decided to turn the conference into a contest - the CECLC Legacy Challenge - in which students would be tasked with creating pre-recorded workshops/videos on a topic of choice that could be tied to the legacy of Cesar E. Chavez. Six students representing our four comprehensive high schools participated on two teams. Over the past six weeks, both teams met with MEP Graduation Specialist Vanessa Santillan-Nieto before and after school to brainstorm, screenwrite, and produce their video submissions. In the end, the team composed of Gabriela from Century, Ana from Hilhi, and Mario from Glencoe took first place; and the team composed of Ashly from Liberty, and Areli and Dayana from Hilhi took third place. Visit our website to learn more and watch their video submissions. Congratulations and way to go, students! You make us Proud to be HSD!
This Saturday, San Antonians will get to experience downtown in a way like never before. There's a holiday drive-thru taking place that features a festival of lights, selfies with Santa (from distance, of course), and “snow” thanks to 100,000 pounds of ice. It's one way Centro San Antonio is trying to drum up support for the downtown businesses, many small ones, trying to survive the pandemic. In this week's edition of San Antonio's Voice, CEO Matt Brown and Economic Development Director Sarah Esserlieu talk to Randy Beamer about their efforts. The two explain how the pandemic revealed there wasn't one specific organization dedicated to small businesses in downtown. So in response, they created “Main Street Business,” a project devoted to helping these companies. Brown and Esserlieu go into detail about their work and the help available to companies downtown. Centro San Antonio's mission is to make downtown San Antonio more beautiful, more prosperous, and more welcoming. And if you're interested, the holiday drive-thru takes place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at East Cesar E. Chavez and Hemisfair Boulevard. This week's Buen Hombre podcast features none other than Magdaleno “Leno” Rose Avila. One of twelve children born to immigrant farm working parents, Leno learned what generosity and service to others meant as he watched his mother and father give what they had, warm meals, a floor to sleep on, and always a smile to whom ever they encountered without a place to live. Leno likes to say he has a PhD which he translates as Public Highway Demonstrations in the University of life. Leno’s colorful path has always placed him at the forefront of important social movements in this country over the last 50 years; civil rights, immigrant rights, farm worker rights, the death penalty, and raising awareness around the dangers of GMO’s in our foods. In many instances there were moments where there was no one else called to fulfill an important role of advocating for people that had lost their voice, or went overlooked by the mainstream media. This was the case when he became the first director of the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation or spent his own personal pension to work with US expatriated and local gang members in El Salvador and then later in Los Angeles with an organization he has provided important leadership to, Homies Unidos. The Odyssey Storytelling Podcast returns to the "Labor" show from January 2017, this time with a different -- and dual -- connotation: the work of having a baby. Montserrat Caballero tells the story of how the experience of pregnancy and giving birth showed her that successful labor, so many other things, relies on community. From her Odyssey bio: Montserrat Caballero is a community volunteer and activist. She is a member of the Cesar E. Chavez Holiday Coalition, Las Adelitas Political Pac, groups focused on sexual violence, and sits on the Borderlands Theater Board. She is also heavily involved in the Carrillo K-5 Creative Arts and Communication Magnet PTO, where her son is a second grader. She recently joined the Flowers and Bullets Advisory Committee and is looking forward to working with this group to develop a vibrant community space at the school they recently acquired from TUSD. She currently works in the PCC Adult Basic Education for College and Career Division. This episode was performed and recorded in front of a live audience at The Screening Room on January 5th, 2017, and was curated by Jen Nowicki Clark.
