Want the real playbook behind Division 1 College golf recruiting? Chris Bates sits down with University of Arizona Wildcats Head Coach Jim Anderson to get a candid look at NCAA Division 1 golf recruiting. They discuss roster limits, rankings, culture when coaches choose their next class—and what athletes can do to stand out without getting lost in the noise.Coach Anderson breaks down what's actually changed in college athletics and what remains timeless: a drive to compete, a tight-knit team culture, and the daily habits that make you better. He also explains how new roster limits make every scholarship decision matter and why one of his big things he looks for in a recruit is not talked about enough. If you're considering JUCO golf, you'll hear Coach Anderson speak about a clear path forward. Playing time, U.S.-based results, tough competition and a second window to be recruited can be powerful—especially if you produce week after week. Coach Anderson and Chris also focus on 'right fit' - the relationship with your coaches, the internal competition that pushes you, and weighing up NIL money.Coach Anderson and Chris also address a widespread debate: College golf vs professional golf as a teenager. Coach Anderson's verdict? The college advantage is competition: world-class courses, teammates who raise your ceiling every day and growing as a human being under college coaches who truly care about you, ultimately graduating with a degree.Hit play, get the insights, and decide with clarity. If this conversation helped, follow the show, share it with a teammate!

In this episode, we sit down with Ana Patricia Rodríguez, author of Avocado Dreams: Remaking Salvadoran Life and Art in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area (U Arizona Press, 2025). In In Avocado Dreams, Rodríguez draws from her own positionality as a Salvadoran transplant to examine the construction of the unique Salvadoran cultural imaginary made in the greater D.C. area. Through a careful reading of the creative works of local writers, performers, artists, and artivists, Rodríguez demonstrates how the people have remade themselves in relation to the cultural, ethnoracial, and sociolinguistic diversity of the area. She discusses how Salvadoran people have developed unique, intergenerational Salvadoreñidades, manifested in particular speech and symbolic acts, ethnoracial embodiments, and local identity formations in relation to the diverse communities, most notably Black Washingtonians, who co-inhabit the region. This timely and relevant work not only enriches our understanding of Salvadoran diasporic experiences but also contributes significantly to broader discussions on migration, identity, and cultural production in the United States. Satellite Tracking Reveals Increased Global Population Exposure to Floods (2000–2018). Professor Beth Tellman (Chief Science Officer and co-founder of Cloud to Street; Professor at the University of Arizona geography) discusses her peer-reviewed study, published in Nature magazine, using satellite imaging from NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites, equipped with the MODIS optical sensor, to track global flood events. This systematic mapping provides hard data of actual events, augmenting the global flood database, covering 913 observed flood events between 2000 and 2018. Her research identified an increase of up to 24% in the proportion of the population exposed to floods, indicating people are moving faster into flood plains than the general population growth rate. Limitations of the data include satellites being blocked by cloud cover and difficulty tracking sudden events like dam breaks or pluvial events. A significant concern is the underreporting bias of damaging floods in regions like sub-Saharan Africa. 1913 DAYTON

Flood Data Shows Alarming Trends, Surpassing Previous Modeling Estimates. Professor Beth Tellman (University of Arizona Geography Department; Cloud to Street) highlights that her compiled flood data is useful for financial sectors, such as insurance and municipal bonds. The data shows Asia dominates observations, accounting for 398 of 913 events, including 85 in India and 52 in China. Furthermore, climate change projections for 2030 show Asia, among 57 countries globally, is expected to see significantly increased flood exposure. Tellman asserts her data is more alarming than previous modeling because it systematically captures impactful human events that models often exclude, such as dam breaks (13 events affecting over 13 million people). Although projections to 2100 are highly uncertain, the 2030 predictions are considered a "pretty good bet." This fresh, observed data, which runs contrary to good planning, is expected to be incorporated into the next IPCC report. 1894 PORTLAND

Why has America struggled so much to effectively manage the opioid use crisis? One of the answers, as you'll learn in this eye-opening episode of Raise the Line, is rooted in laws and attitudes from the early 20th century that removed addiction from the realm of medicine and defined it as a moral failing.  “The federal Harrison Act of 1914 forbade any physician from prescribing opioids to people with addiction, so it became more the purview of law enforcement or behavioral health or religion,” says Dr. Melody Glenn, who regularly confronts the consequences of this history during shifts in the emergency department at Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. And as Glenn explains to host Caleb Furnas, the resulting stigma associated with addiction has extended to the treatments for it as well, especially methadone, despite its effectiveness. Drawing on her dual expertise in emergency and addiction medicine, Glenn dispels misconceptions that medication-assisted treatment merely replaces one addiction with another, and emphasizes that harm reduction is critical to saving lives. Her desire to break prevailing stigmas led her to discover the story of Dr. Marie Nyswander, who pioneered methadone maintenance therapy in the 1960s and is featured in Dr. Glenn's new book, Mother of Methadone: A Doctor's Quest, a Forgotten History, and a Modern-Day Crisis. You'll leave this instructive interview understanding the roots of our flawed approach to addiction treatment, meeting an overlooked pioneer in the field, and admiring a devoted and compassionate physician who is following in her footsteps.  Mentioned in this episode:Banner-University Medical CenterMother of Methadone book If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. "Cats are an incredible way to help new graduates with their surgical training. You never know what you're going to find, and that hands-on experience is invaluable.” This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund and The Community Cat Clinic. How can we ensure the next generation of veterinarians is equipped to handle the unique challenges of community cats? In this episode, Stacy LeBaron welcomes Dr. Nellie Goetz, Associate Professor of Practice at the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine, to discuss her innovative approach to veterinary education and the vital role of high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) training. Dr. Goetz shares insights from her week-long elective course that immerses students in hands-on community cat care, teaching everything from surgery techniques to navigating legal and ethical considerations. With support from local organizations and shelters, students gain real-world experience treating up to 50 cats per day. The course not only strengthens surgical skills but also fosters a deeper understanding of public health, TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), and the complex relationship between communities and outdoor cats. Tune in to learn how this groundbreaking program is shaping the future of veterinary medicine, why community cat care should be a core part of veterinary training, and how local clinics can get involved in expanding spay/neuter access. This week on the Rick Flynn Presents podcast we remember our 39th President of the United States JIMMY CARTER. Our special guest is University of Arizona History Professor DAVID GIBBS. President Carter passed away, on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. This interview was recorded the very next day at 11:00 a.m. eastern time. David Gibbs, who has studied the Carter presidency for the past 15 years, talks about this President's legacy and new evidence that shows America's right turn in domestic and foreign policy really began during the Carter presidency, not — as is widely believed — during that of his successor, Ronald Reagan. “Evidence from newly opened archives show that Carter initiated the deregulation of U.S. industry and finance, reduced the power of organized labor, lowered taxes on business, and imposed austerity measures that intentionally raised unemployment among working people. Carter also augmented military spending for the first time in a decade, diverting resources from domestic programs, while increasing U.S. interventions overseas.” Gibbs says, “Carter should also be remembered for his support of racial justice and his many impressive achievements after he left the presidency. But we must not whitewash his central role in overturning FDR's New Deal and concentrating wealth among the top 1 percent of the U.S. population.” Gibbs is a professor of history at the University of Arizona. He is the author of “Revolt of the Rich: How the Politics of the 1970s Widened America's Class Divide.” Contact him at dgibbs@arizona.edu

In the world of swimming, you would be hard pressed to find a coach whose resume matches that of American Swim Coaches Association Hall of Famer Frank Busch. As a collegiate coach at The University of Arizona, his teams won 2 NCAA Championships and his swimmers won a combined 80 individual and relay national championships. He was a 6x NCAA coach of the year and 11x Pac 12 coach of the year. He retired from Arizona in 2011 and became an assistant coach for Team USA for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, and then National Team Director for the 2012 and 2016 games. During those two games, his swimmers won 64 medals, including 33 golds, as he oversaw swimmers such as Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky.  Frank and John met at a swimming conference in Mexico City in Fall 2024 and had so many great conversations that they decided to record their thoughts on leadership, the importance of team dynamics in individual sports,  the importance of team values, being a truth teller, and developing people and not simply athletes.
