This can be a busy and hectic time of year, but I hope you can pause for a moment and feel the peace of our Savior Jesus Christ as you listen to this week's brief podcast episode. I first recorded and shared this episode back in April 2023, but the message feels relevant to this Christmas season. I discuss President Henry B. Eyring's April 2023 conference message, “Finding Personal Peace,” and share thoughts on developing greater trust, hope, and faith in Jesus Christ, allowing peace to settle into our souls regardless of our situation or challenges.   “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” - John 14:27  Challenge: Listen to President Eyring's April 2023 talk, “Finding Personal Peace” and consider how you can invite greater peace into your life.   Resources: President Henry B. I'm answering some of the most common questions I hear about grants.   Where Do I Find Grants? Just like anything in life, you can always do a Google search. However, that might send you down a never-ending rabbit trail with nothing to show for it! Several grant search tools are available for nonprofits, such as: Instrumentl Grant Station GrantScape Foundation Directory Online Grant Forward Grant Select Grant Watch Grant Gopher In addition, I recommend starting local. See what's in your own community and build relationships with those foundations. Check with your local library, the Chamber of Commerce, and local businesses. 6 Tips Before You Start Your Grant Search: Be sure your nonprofit is ready for grants! Be sure your mission and priorities are clear and externally focused Know your program priorities so you can find a good match with grant funders Weed out quickly. Look for geographical and program fit first. Start local, especially if you're newer to grants Organize your search Challenge: Listen in today as we go back to the basics of grant writing. What Questions Do You Have About Grant Writing? When I first started grant writing and working with my mentor, I asked a lot of questions.  Let me rephrase that. I asked a BOATLOAD of questions. I bombarded her with so many queries that I apologized for the onslaught. I'll never forget her gracious response, "I'd rather you ask than wonder."  Now that I'm mentoring grant writers myself, I feel the same way. No question is too big or too small!   What Does a Grant Even Look Like? I was recently a guest presenter about grant readiness in a college class. After the class, a student came up to me and said, "I feel silly asking this, but...what does a grant look like? I've tried googling it, but the answers are so confusing!" I am SO glad she asked! Funny thing is, I wondered the EXACT same thing before I met my mentor and started grant writing. Except...Google wasn't a thing yet, so I didn't have anyone to ask! Today I'm going to explain what a grant application might look like depending on the type of grant you're writing, what things are usually included in a grant proposal, and the different ways of submitting a grant. And, most importantly, I explain how you can know exactly how to fill out a grant application! Challenge: Listen in today as we go back to the basics of grant writing. "May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)The one goal of a disciple is to be like Jesus. Think about the 12 original disciples of Jesus. They spent three years with Jesus. They walked with him. They talked with him. They were eye witness of his life, his character, his attitude, his conversations, and how he interacted with people. They observed it all…and they never forgot it. I believe they spent the rest of their lives emulating his life and character. They wanted to be like Jesus. This is our goal. I hope it's your desire. In every area of your life to be like Jesus. God is at work to this end. The Holy Spirit with in us is transforming us and giving us the opportunities to allow our character to be changed to be more like Christ.Theologically, this process is called “sanctification.” It's the ongoing journey of letting go of the old life and taking on the new life that pleases God. Paul said in Romans 8:28-29 - “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son…”God uses all things in our lives, the good and the bad to help conform us to the image of his son. He is at work to make us like Jesus. Our job is to surrender to that process. We are to yield to the work of the Holy Spirit and to say yes to God. Let's allow God to shape us and mold us to be like Christ.“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ.”  (Philippians 1:6)Jesus will not stop until the job is finished.  And in the end we will each one stand before Jesus Christ whole and complete.  Perfect, pure, perfected.  No more hammering, no more sawing, no more finish work.  Why? Because God finishes what he starts. What is left for us to do?  Simply to place ourselves in God's hands.  To cooperate with the Master Designer as he shapes us into the image of Jesus.  To say, “Lord, here am I. Make me what you want me to be.”Today's Challenge: Listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit. During a sermon, while reading the Bible, during your prayer time, expect to hear God speak. Notice how he leads, how he guides, corrects, convicts, and be willing to say yes. The more we cooperate with the work of the Holy Spirit, the more we grow to be like Jesus. This is the  goal of a disciple.Discussion Questions: What does it mean "to be like Jesus?"Why is sanctification the one goal of a disciple?Where is God working in your life to help you become more like Jesus?Recommended Resource: Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus by Kyle IdlemanVisit the website: 5MinuteDiscipleship.comFollow on social:Facebook.com/5minutediscipleshipInstagram.com/5minutediscipleshipClick here to learn how you can start your own podcast.

Gordy explains his empathy for them and addresses my question of where God might fit into his medical work. Our schmooze is fascinating! In the second half, Gord shares stories about his past participation in humanitarian work in Zimbabwe, through Ve'ahavta, on a life-saving HIV/AIDS mother-to-child regiment which was picked up the World Health Association. Dr. Gord discusses openly his son's courage dealing with a severe stutter he's had since he was six. Gord Arbess breathes compassion. It's evident through how he lives his life and the way he and his wife, Sharon, raise their children. It is clear from how Gordy acts on a regular day when the poor and needy come his way. It’s Day Four of our Listen Up! bootcamp week. Today we’re putting your memory to the test. And if you’re here for the first time, you can catch up on our previous challenges here. Today’s Challenge: Listen to our podcast with today's guest Joshua Foer. Then apply Foer's memory trick in our quiz at the bottom of the page. It includes a video, where you’ll be introduced to several people, and questions about them. And if you’ve got an occasion today to meet lots of people, try it out in real life. Let us know how you do! If you have to make something memorable, you have to make it weird. At least for information lacking much context — like meeting a lot of new people at once. Memory champion and science journalist Joshua Foer is well-acquainted with this common challenge: you’re at an event where you don’t know anyone; introductions are made; you forget their names ten minutes later. When Foer was a contestant at the US Memory Championship, he had to memorize a whole batch of faces and names. While training for this event, he learned that associating people’s names with an image helped his memory — and the weirder the picture, the more it stuck in his mind. Listen to today’s podcast to find out how he did it. The good news is that memory can be learned, and it’s a skill you can work on. But Foer also reminds us of the importance of paying attention, and — remember yesterday’s episode? — caring a little more. How did you do? What was the weirdest mental image you came up with to memorize a name? Tweet us @onlyhuman or leave us a voicemail at (803) 820-WNYC.
