The “Unleashing Sister Saints” podcast was created by Susan R. Madsen to strengthen the testimonies of sisters in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, while helping them wrestle through the cultural and gender dynamics that have kept women fro
This is the last in a 5-part series I've been doing on unconscious bias. These are made up of episodes 121, 122, 123, 124, and 125. I wanted to share some of the content of my in-person/Zoom three-hour unconscious bias workshop. In Episode 121, I provided an introduction, and in 122, I did most of the background section, in 123 I finished the background and then talked about unconscious bias purpose and description. In 124, I walked through two segments titled “Filters, Lenses, & Worldviews” and also “Types of Biases. Then in this last one I share strategies to help us do better. I also have resources below. I hope you have enjoyed this series! Enjoy the summer. If you are just joining and haven't listened to Episodes 121, 122, and 123, I'd recommend listening to those first, as I'm in the middle of sharing the content of my unconscious bias workshop. The face to face or Zoom versions are very interactive and are 3 hours, but I'm condensing it, but still wanted to share it. In Episode 121, I provided an introduction, and in 122, I did most of the background section, in 123 I finished the background and then talked about unconscious bias purpose and description. Today, in 124, I talk through “Filters, Lenses, & Worldviews” and “Types of Biases. I'll just have one more episode in this series for episode 125, and then I'll halt for the summer. If you are just joining and haven't listened to Episodes 121 and 122, I'd recommend listening to those first, as I'm in the middle of sharing the content of my unconscious bias workshop. It is 3 hours when I do it in person or on Zoom, but I'm condensing it for this podcast. In Episode 121, I provided an introduction, and in 122, I did most of the background section. In this episode I finish that up and then talk about the purpose and description of unconscious bias. I'll have two more episodes left in this 5-part series. In person provides of course deeper development, this hopefully this helps some. Listen in! This is the second in a series I'm doing that is part of a training I do on understanding unconscious biases. Episode 121 was the first in a series and this is Episode 122. This is information on understanding ourselves and our own biases and is 100% aligned with becoming a human being and becoming less judgmental. 121 provided an introduction and now 122 provides some background information, which includes some research studies. I find it all so interesting and helpful! For a long while, I've been thinking that I should provide you as listeners some of my unconscious bias workshop in chunks because I think it is more important than ever before. I've taught this for years, and before that I worked on my deeper understanding of myself and actually how to teach it is a way that could be effective. I'm a better person for digging deep into how unconscious bias works in myself. I'm a better spouse, mother, grandmother, employee, neighbor, and church goer. I could make the name of this and just called it “Becoming a better human being” or “Becoming less judgmental,” as that is what it is. When I do it in person or on Zoom, it is 3-hour training with all of the activities. This will be shorter and most likely less effective, but I still think it will provide insights for you. My expectation is that it will be at least 6 episodes for 15-20 minutes each, but we'll see. I hope you'll listen in!Video:Think for Yourself (Dawah Films, UK): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPyPM25boh0
I just finished reading a report that came out a few months ago titled “The Connection Opportunity: Insights forBringing Americans Together Across Difference” by a group called “More in Common.” I had such interesting insights come to me from reading it, and I wanted to read sections of the introduction and the key findings as I think this are important to understand. Humans are wired to connect. From an early age, we seek out familiar voices and faces, we monitor the needs and emotions of others, and we engage in play and mimic what we see people around us do. This need for connection is so fundamental that being deprived of it can contribute to negative health outcomes, ranging from heart disease to mental illness. Although the frequency with which people interact with others naturally fluctuates across the lifespan—of sustained periods of social isolation pose a serious risk to lifelong well-being.This report focuses on what Americans are saying keeps them from connecting, particularly across differences and what helps them want to connect more. In this 119th episode of Unleashing Sister Saints, I want to share some of my thoughts as I listened to President Camille Johnson's talk during one of the sessions of the April 2025 General Conference. Her talk was titled “Spiritually Whole in Him.” She said, “Wholeness does not necessarily mean physical and emotional restoration in this life. Wholeness is born of faith in and conversion to Jesus Christ." I had some "ahahs" during her talk and have reviewed it multiple times since. I conclude with this thought: Each of us has scars of some kind, but I testify that we are whole-enough to be able to receive personal revelation from on high and feel that peace of the Holy Ghost wash over our whole beings. We are whole-enough to continue to use the gift of the Son's Atonement, whenever we chose to be chosen. Let's choose to feel whole-enough. Listen in!
As most of you who have been listening to this podcast for a while already know, in 2023, my team and I launched A Bolder Way Forward as an initiative within the Utah Women & Leadership Project. The mission of a BWF is to ensure that more girls, women, and their families thrive. In this episode I do a quick overview of BWF and then provide a few updates and insights on where we are at and some current needs that we have. As background, national and statewide studies continue to show that women and girls in Utah are not thriving in critical areas. Year after year, Utah continues to have high levels of domestic violence, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, and gender-based discrimination, while also ranking as the worst state for women's equality and having low levels of women's leadership representation in nearly all domains, including politics and business. Although the needle has moved slightly in a few areas, with its current trajectory it will take three or four decades to make notable progress. This is why Icontinue to say “It is time for Utah to embrace A Bolder Way Forward (BWF).” I absolutely feel called to this work so I've combined one of my life callings with some paid work and a lot of community service! We all serve in different ways. Also, learn more at www.abolderwayforward.org!
As you know if you have glanced at with the title, I love the new book titled “Changemakers: Women Who Boldly Built Zion.” This is new from Signature Books and was written by my friends McArthur Krishna and Anne Pimentel – Illustrated by Jessica Sarah Beach. I've had McArthur as a guest a few times on this podcast a year or so ago. In this episode, I want to talk about what I love about this book and share some of my thoughts. Thanks to the authors and illustrator!
I recorded this episode the week after International Women's Day, and I had done 9 speeches in one week. In many of them, I brought up the topic of status quo and power. The topic and wrestle with "power" was on my mind, so I decided to do an episode focused on power and even the types of power there are. I end of course with the need for us as women to embrace the power we have, and I shared a few ideas of how to do that. Listen in!
In this podcast episode I am very candid about some of my frustrations particularly the last few weeks but then shift and focus on the confirmations from the Spirit that came to me during General Conference last weekend. I choose to believe! I hope you appreciate my journey.
Last month, ago, an article was published on the Exponent II by Linda Hamilton titled “Mormon Microfeminisms”. I smiled while reading it and wanted to share some of the content. The Exponent does use the word “feminism” in their subtitle for their forum: Exponent II is “A feminist forum for women and gender minorities across the Mormon spectrum.” I share some of my experiences as well. If you have had some, you can send me stories at unleashingsistersaints@gmail.com. List to the original blog post by Linda: Mormon Microfeminisms — Exponent II Blog
In the last few episodes, I've shared thoughts from sisters who have been listening to this podcast. In this episode I continue sharing women's thoughts and stories. Storytelling "is our religious heritage and essential to our future of bringing others unto Christ." One woman responded to a question about how women in the church can accomplish what President Kimbal stated about women of the Church being seen in articulate and happy ways. Another sister shared a few stories about how subtle sexism plays out in the Church as well. Stories matter. We need to figure out how to better support each other.
In this episode of Unleashing Sister Saints, I share some additional thoughts from others who have been listening to the podcast for the past year or two. Each brings out important elements that I would like to emphasis. The first is one woman's thoughts and struggle with the patriarchy. The second woman made some comments about an older episode about patriarchy and presiding and she had learned more about benevolent sexism. I added a few short comments at the end from a few other sisters. I add comments about wrestling and having a community too. I hope you enjoy listening in!
A few weeks ago, on an episode of Unleashing Sister Saints, I read an editorial I wrote for the Salt Lake Tribune on the illusion of choice. Basically, by the time a young woman reaches 18, her choices are often the culmination of years of social conditioning with strong messages given to her that she should do certain things – then we blame women for their choices. I received a powerful email from a woman and would like to focus this episode on her email and the topicsthat it brings up. I've removed her name, and she gave me permission to share. It focuses on making up to our true purpose, and I've shared some of my thoughts as well. Listen in. Thanks to this sister for her email.
In this podcast episode, I come back to the topic of sexism. I used to avoid using the word “sexism” because it made people uncomfortable, including me, a women's leadership scholar. But as I began digging deeper into the research, my perspective changed. Now I use the word often because I realized that most people don't understand the term and how it plays out in families, communities, and workplaces — particularly the more subtle form, called “benevolent sexism.” Now that I understand it, I see it all around me. I talk about what sexism is in this episode, as knowledge is power!
In this episode, I talk about the importance of seeing and serving differences. I refer lightly to things going on in my own state and in my own country related to public policies and actions that are happening related to removing safe spaces for women (and others) in the vein of quote “stoppingdiscrimination.” The research that has shown for decades that when you truly see differences and design interventions around those differences, you can help the people who need help in better ways. I also integrate some quotes from Melissa Wei-Tsing Inouye's last book. Listen in!
Recently I wrote and published an editorial in The Salt Lake Tribune called “In Utah, a woman's choice can often be an illusion.” I read and comment on this piece during this episode. So much of this relates to how we are socialized more generally, and particularly in the Church. I believe you'll appreciate what I'm trying to teach here. Of course, I would also appreciate hearing from you at unleashingsistersaints@gmail.com!
I really appreciated the writings of Melissa Wei-Tsing Inouye, as she was such a powerful women scholar and writer in the Church. A few months before her passing, I read her final book, titled “Sacred Struggle: Seeking Christ on the Path of Most Resistance.” I was profoundly impacted by the book and Melissa's vulnerability in her writing. I never met her personally but read her work on women and religion. She passed away in April of 2024 at 44 years of age. When I read hard copies of books, I highlight them and have an assistant type them up, so I have 12 pages of notes! I thought I would share some of the passages I really appreciate. Link to Melissa's book.
This is the fourth and final episode in a series I've been doing to share the key findings of a large 2023 study called The Girls' Index. The first focused on confidence and social media, the second on stress and well-being, and the third on school. Now, in this final episode focuses on the topic of leadership and relationships. As a reminder, The Girls' Index, the largest study of its kind, shared compelling data on girls in the United States, with 17,502 girls in 5th through 12th grades participating from schools nationwide. Researchers collected data for the first time in 2017 and then again in 2023. The purpose of the study was to better understand girls' thoughts, experiences, perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors so that parents, teachers, school counselors, faith-based youth leaders, neighbors, and others can figure out how to better provide support for girls and young women in today's world. Listen in and learn!
For the last two episodes, I've been sharing the results of a large study on girls, and today I'm going to share the third set of findings (and I'll finish up with the next episode). In this episode, I share results on the impact of school on girls and how they feel about it. School is a big part of how girls feel about life! As a reminder, The Girls' Index shared compelling data on girls in the United States and was the largest survey of its kind, with 17,502 girls in 5th through 12th grades participating from schools nationwide. Researchers collected data for the first time in 2017 and then again in 2023. They explored six categories of concern, which included confidence, social media, stress and well-being, school, leadership, and relationships. The purpose of the study was to understand girls' thoughts, experiences, perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors—a tall order indeed! This information can be helpful for raising our next generation of women in the Church. Listen in!
In the last episode, I talked about the results of a major study on girls in the United States, and I shared some results on girls' confidence and social media. As a reminder, I'm talking about a major study that was published in 2023 called, The Girls' Index. The report highlighted compelling data on girls in the United States (I'm sure it is similar for other counties as well). It was the largest national survey of its kind, with 17,502 girls in 5th through 12th grades participating from schools nationwide. In this episode, I focus on stress and wellbeing. I integrate how these findings can inform our work with girls and young women in the Church and in society as well.
Although I love this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt - “No one can make me feel inferior without my consent" - I must say that teen girls are struggling right now and need help. In 2023 a large study, The Girls' Index, reported compelling data on girls in the U.S. It was the largest national survey of its kind, with 17,502 girls participating. Researchers collected data for the first time in 2017 and then again in 2023. They explored things that would help anyone who influences girls (e.g., parents, family members, teachers, coaches, religious youth leaders) better understand girls' thoughts, experiences, perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors. The researchers partnered with schools nationwide to survey girls in 5th through 12th grades. The results linking confidence and social media are convincing., and I share those and other thoughts in this episode. Listen in! For this last episode of 2024, I wanted to talk about how expectations for ourselves and others sometimes need to shift and that's okay. I share some personal examples, while also discussing how our definitions of "success" may also change. I'll get back to sharing some research next year but wanted to end the year with some personal reflections and experiences.
When we consider how we want to use our time in better ways in 2025, I've been thinking of the time we sometimes spend being offended, and why we take offense. I walk through a recent experience of where I temporarily took offense and analyzed why I did, and how I worked quickly to get it out of my system. I also wrestle through how we can overcome feelings of offense as well. Listen in!
For my 100th episode of this podcast, I decided to focus on a recent trip to Asia I took and the blessing that I was reminded of while at the same time, I discuss some of my thoughts around the profound responsibilities I believe we have when we experience so many blessings.
One of my favorite talks in the past general conference was Saturday morning and given by Elder Karl D. Hirst of the Seventy and titled “God's Favorite”. In this episode of Unleashing Sister Saints, I share some of the quotes I love and make some comments about them. For example, he said, “Isn't it wonderful that there are times when we can feel so fully and personally noticed and loved? Nephi can call Him “his” Jesus, and so can we.” I've thought about that since I heard this, that we can call him “my Jesus”. Does “my Jesus” feel differently? Thinking about it that way I can picture him in the Garden of Gethsemane Atoning for my sins. I can picture him on the cross for me. I can picture him being resurrected and walking right up to me. I see him truly "seeing "me. I want to feel more deptly that he is "my Jesus." Link to talk: God's Favourite
This episode brings up the conversation about the new changes in garments to start a discussion of using our voice for change but also keeping our hearts soft so we can be guided by the Spirit. I then talk about bringing in change work specific to domestic violence and what needs to be done. Women's voices matter everywhere, and we need to use them. In this episode, I share some of my thoughts that align with an editorial I recently published in the Deseret News called “Not a Shock, But Men and Women Are Not the Same.” Throughout time, we as a society have assumed that if we make decisions based on how things work for men that they will also represent women. Research has found that this is just not correct! In this episode I share some examples of how these assumptions have been and continue to hurt women. I relate this to elements within the Church as well. RESOURCES: Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men Can snow plowing be sexist? Yes it can We need to address the problem of bathroom equity
In this episode, I share some of my initial thoughts on General Conference, and particularly about the music. I share a few thoughts about seeing the children's choir and thinking of my own children and their paths away from the Church. I also comment on other elements of music and my sadness with not having more women speakers - again. Overall, some positive messages at October 2024 General Conference.
In this episode, I'm thinking about General Conference and how to prepare, but I also address the fact that everyone is different and how we listen to, receive revelation, and absorb knowledge is different from one another. I don't get as much into "gender" components in this episode, but I focus on three elements: revelation, reflection, and remembering. I'm hoping it is a great General Conference more generally, and for me specifically. In this episode I discuss the recent talk by Neylane McBaine at the Restore Conference in Utah with over 4,000 people. She outlined various questions and positions we could take related to the patriarchy, and I mentioned where I think I am at and share some of my thoughts about that. I also comment about how asking questions in the Church is important to moving forward. I bring in a few other topics as well! Listen in! Most people have a complicated relationship with their body, with many of us wishing we looked different. Fad diets, intermittent fasting, excessive exercise, weight loss injections, and liposuction abound as we search for perfection. The Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) recently published a research and policy brief summarizing the findings from a complex study of body image in the Church, which is the topic of this episode. In this episode, I am joined by two guests, both professors in the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University: Dr. Sarah Coyne, Associate Director of the Department and a Professor of Human Development, and Dr. Lauren Barnes, an Associate Clinical Professor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. This is such an interesting conversation and research! In this episode, I openly talk about some of the things I'm doing and the load I feel on my shoulders for the work I do. At the same time, I talk about some tender mercies I had last week that helped me remember why I continue to believe. I share a few profound experiences, along with how I rely on feeling the Spirit to help me feel like I'm moving in the right direction. This episode is a little bit of this and a little bit of that! A month ago, I wrote and published an editorial in two Utah newspapers title, “The link between domestic violence and religiosity.” Can I just say, many people in the Church don't want to read or engage in this topic at all, but things will not change if all of us lean into uncomfortable topics like this. I'll be sharing things that I wrote about in that article here so you can see how religion is connected to violence against girls and women. Knowing this can help! Today I share my 90th episode before taking a break for the summer, and perhaps longer. In this episode, I share a few final thoughts, including inspiring quotes from leaders on the potential of women's impact on the Church and the world, and some personal disappointment in the roadblocks women face in making our full influence felt generally, in the Church. Do you have any thoughts, questions, concerns, or suggestions? I love to hear from you: email me at unleashingsistersaints@gmail.com “God sent you here to prepare for a future greater than anything you can imagine...God knows of your successes...He knows of the times you have held onto the fading light and believed—even in the midst of growing darkness. He knows of your sufferings. He knows of your remorse for the times you have fallen short or failed. And he still loves you...He loves you not only for who you are...but also for the person of glory and light you have the potential...to become.” · Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf “Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world ... will be drawn to the Church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the Churchreflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the Church are seen as distinct and different—in happy ways—from the women of the world.” · President Spencer W. Kimball “I have often thought that if great numbers of women of all nations were to unite and lift up their voices in the cause of peace, there would develop a worldwide will for peace which could save our civilization and avoid untold suffering, misery, plague, starvation, and the death of millions.” · President Gordon B. Hinckley “It is not for you to be led by the women of the world; it is for you to lead the … women of the world, in everything that is praise-worthy, everything that is God-like, everything that is uplifting and … purifying to the children of men” · President Joseph F. Smith “I believe that the moment we learn to unleash the full influence of converted, covenant-keeping women, the kingdom of God will change overnight.” · Sheri Dew Challenge: As always, follow any promptings you feel to lead and make your influence felt at home, at church, and in the world. *This week I will be sharing the second half of a two-part conversation with my brother, Tim Willden. These two episodes were originally published in 2023 and have become a listener favorite. Enjoy!* Have you ever thought about how cultivating a more equal partnership in the home can better invite the Holy Ghost to teach, inspire, and uplift a family? Join me for part two of my conversation with Tim Willden, my younger brother, as we discuss ways men and women can work together to create a more equal partnership in the home, resulting in a more Spirit-filled, loving, and safe home and family life. Tim shares the critical importance of husbands and wives talking together openly and frequently about the roles and responsibilities within the home, including those Church culture or broader society has traditionally assigned to just men or just women. In situations where abuse of any kind is present, we discuss the need for women to seek for safe places where they can feel and receive the guidance of the Holy Ghost. I also share research about the positive effect of equal partnerships in the home on children and future generations. “The prophet has been teaching us to ‘Hear Him.' He's been teaching us that we can't make it through this if we don't have the Holy Ghost, if we don't have that relationship. And as a father, I think it comes upon me and my wife, as the nurturers and caregivers of our children, to help foster an environment where they can hear him better, and teaching them how to “hear him.” -Tim Willden Challenge: Think about what equal partnership in the home looks like for you. *This week and next, I will be sharing again a two-part conversation with my brother, Tim Willden. These episodes were originally published in 2023 and have become a listener favorite. Enjoy!* As members of the church, we live in a culture that literally and metaphorically puts men on the stand. On this week's episode, I invite my younger brother, Tim Willden, to share his experiences as a bishop and stake president learning and striving to allow women in his stake to be more equal partners in the work of salvation. Tim shares ways his wife Danai was a more active partner throughout his service as stake president, including in ministering to departing and returning missionaries, as well as ways he encouraged the stake Relief Society, Young Women and Primary leaders to speak up and share revelation they received in more gender-balanced settings. Tim shares the revelation he received repeatedly to simply close his mouth (“shut up!”) and listen to what women were thinking and feeling. I hope this episode gives you encouragement and ideas for what can be done on the local level to help women and young women be heard, recognized and included. “Quite often we focus too much on the leaders that are sitting on the stand, and not enough on the sacrifice that everyone is making.” -Tim Willden Challenge: Think about the types of things bishops, stake presidents or other men in the church have done that have impacted you positively and why. Share them with me at unleashingsistersaints@gmail.com or on social media @UnleashingSisterSaints (see links below). Do you tend to feel comfortable and powerful with your sexuality as a Latter-day Saint woman, or somewhat ashamed and embarrassed? Join me today for a fantastic discussion with Dr. Chelom Leavitt, a BYU professor, author, mother of eight, and expert in healthy, meaningful sexuality. Dr. Leavitt shares how women can achieve more meaningful sex and why meaningful sex is critical in a healthy marriage relationship, and how women can achieve greater mindfulness during sex. We also discuss how to teach children of any age about sex, and small things we can do to help prevent sexual abuse. As Dr. Leavitt says, who better to talk about healthy sex than a committed, Latter-day Saint woman devoted to marriage and family? Challenge: Dr. Leavitt's website features great information and resources for women on the topic of healthy, meaningful sexuality. Today I am joined by the incomparable Robin Ritch, and extraordinary leader with a wealth of experience in tech and innovation. From the get-go, you will be inspired by Robin's passion and excitement for life and the gospel of Jesus Christ. In this episode, she shares insights gained from interviewing several dozen Latter-day Saint women who came of age in the ‘60s and ‘70s. She shares their wrestles and how the friction these women experienced shaped their lives and testimonies. Robin also invites women to reflect on how they can bring greater light to the world around them through their own unique gifts and talents, a role she sees as divinely female. Challenge: This week, ask a Latter-day Saint woman, maybe older than you, about her story. Reflect on what you learn from her experiences. Resources: Watch for Robin's book with lessons from her interviews with Latter-day Saint women later in 2024! Candace Queathem is a mom of three young children who has made time and space in her life to serve the vulnerable in her community. Candace, who lives in London, England, formally serves as the community outreach specialist for the Hyde Park Stake, but her volunteer efforts began with a simple observation of need during the Afghan refugee crisis and a desire to help. Today, I talk with Candace about the value of education, the critical importance of relationship and trust building in volunteer work, and how centering her life in Christlike service has given her a firm foundation when challenges to her faith have come. She shares some great suggestions for ways women can immediately get involved in serving the needy in their communities, and why we must reach out to help. Ultimately, Candace has learned that advocacy work is the Savior's work, breaking down man-made barriers and bringing about peace. Challenge: How can you make your influence more felt in your community? How can you serve in ways that align with your skills and values but also move you outside your comfort zone? Laurel Christensen Day believes there are many options, not just one or two, to live out our discipleship and life's purpose. On this week's episode, Laurel shares her unexpected journey from part-time marketing and events coordinator at Deseret Book to her current role as company president, how she's learned from and not been paralyzed by mistakes, and the responsibility she feels to create space for everyone who wants to belong in the Church. Challenge: Consider the vision you have for your roles, whether that is at home, at work, or at church. How can these opportunities bring you the fulfillment, joy, and meaning that you seek? We have been invited by senior Church leaders (and continuously in scripture by our Savior, Jesus Christ) to build Zion by creating communities of unity and belonging. On the podcast today, guest Jared Harding joins me to discuss how male allyship is critical to building Zion. Jared, who holds a master's degree in leadership and organizational behavior, shares how his interest in allyship began as he more fully understood the doctrine of Heavenly Mother and women's divine potential. We then discuss how men can move from avoiding or even accomodating gender issues to creatively advancing women's standing in the Church by sharing power, influence, and decision-making ability. Challenge: Share this episode with the male leaders in your Zion community. Today's episode begins with the story of my friend, Heather. Heather had never planned to go to grad school, but that all changed with a “tap.” This week I talk about the power of the "tap on the shoulder,” a nudge or a bit of encouragement, especially for women. This tap can encourage positive transformational moments like going back to school, pursuing a graduate degree, asking for a promotion, or running for political office. This is a brief, but impactful episode on our capacity to influence other's lives for good simply by recognizing other's strengths and encouraging them forward. Challenge: Think of five people (particularly women) you can give this “tap on the shoulder” to in the coming days and weeks. Remember, this is important for you and them! I believe Latter-day Saint women are perfect candidates for public service, and this week's guest agrees. Join me for a conversation with my vibrant and passionate friend Sui Lang Panoke, a visionary leader, social entrepreneur, and international trainer and facilitator who currently serves as Senior Vice President of Culture for Zions Bank. Sui Lang shares her background in training women and minorities for public service, and why women often bring the very type of leadership that is needed in government today. Challenge: When women feel loved and supported, they feel empowered to lead and can create positive change. Take a moment today to think about how you can lift and support a woman around you. Have you ever heard of cultural master narratives? Today, Elizabeth Ostler, Ph.D., explains the role of cultural master narratives in telling us who and how we're supposed to be in order to belong to a group. Liz, a theater-maker, researcher, artist, activist, and current Relief Society president in Brooklyn, recently completed doctoral research on Latter-day Saint women cultural master narratives. On the episode, Liz explains how gaining awareness around our culture's ideals, distinguishing these ideals from doctrine, and seeking our own personal revelation can help us be true to ourselves and to who our Heavenly Parents need us to be. Liz is also the editor-in-chief of the LDS Women Project, and she she shares wonderful insights from producing and editing interviews with hundreds of LDS women around the world. Challenge: Take time this week to pause, zoom out, and consider your life in relationship to who and how you believe you're supposed to be. Are you responding to cultural narratives and ideals in a way that is serving you, or are these narratives stifling or limiting? Are they helping you reach the fullest measure of your creation? Pray and seek personal revelation to know who and how God wants and needs you to be. Join me today for a conversation with Courtney Vander Veur Matz, an award-winning artist, wife, and mother of three. Courtney's art was included in the Church's International Art Competition in both 2019 and 2002, and her artwork visualizing Heavenly Mother and our Heavenly Parents has been included in several art shows and in the book, The Girls' Guide to Heavenly Mother. In the episode, Courtney shares the process and inspiration for creating a 7ft by 4ft portrait of Heavenly Mother in 2019, and we discuss the joy that can be found as we allow for creativity in our everyday lives. This week I bring back Dr. Lisa Hansen and welcome Dr. Lisa Diamond to the show to talk about creating a community of love and safety for everyone, including our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters. Humans are social creatures, and we need to matter to someone in order to survive and thrive. Feeling deeply connected and protected by others, especially our own family and community, with a sense of unconditional safety, protection, and affirmation, is critical to every aspect of our health and relationships. Dr. Hansen and Dr. Diamond share years of research and expertise on social safety, and how we can more deeply love our children in a Christlike way and communicate that love more clearly, no matter our loved one's challenges or choices. As Latter-day Saints, I truly believe this is foundational to our deepest values and principles. Challenge: This week, consider how explicitly you share your unconditional love to your children, family members, or others in your community. Consider ways you could clearly communicate that love on a consistent basis. Also, listen! Whether you agree or disagree with your child or loved one's choices or opinions, simply listen to their experiences and perspectives. Do you remember that in 2019, President Russell M. Nelson specifically invited women in the Church to study all the truths they could find about priesthood power? If you've taken that invitation to heart, what have you learned? On today's episode, Wendy Ulrich, a psychologist and author of “Live Up to Our Privileges: Women, Power, and Priesthood”, joins me to share what she has learned in her study of women and priesthood power. Wendy, a former mission leader and Relief Society general council member, shares beautiful insights on how understanding priesthood power can elevate every area of our life, from our personal and professional endeavors to our relationships and engagement with others at church and in the community. I especially loved Wendy's examination of the Savior's use of priesthood power during his earthly ministry, and how it parallels the work we as women can do to love, serve, and lift others, including our children and families. “As a righteous, endowed Latter-day Saint woman, you speak and teach with power and authority from God. … I entreat you to study prayerfully all the truths you can find about priesthood power.” -President Russell M. Nelson, Spiritual Treasures Challenge: As you consider how better understanding and drawing on priesthood power could improve your personal life and your relationships, take a moment to consider your desires. On today's episode I discuss fixed mindset vs. growth mindset, and how it relates to women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Do you have a tendency to believe your qualities are carved in stone, with an urgency to prove yourself over and over? Do you limit your achievement and feel the need to constantly try to prove you are better than others? Do you have a perception that effort is only for people with deficiencies? If so, you may be stuck in a fixed mindset vs. a growth mindset. We can all experience this type of fixed mindset from time to time, but the gospel of Jesus Christ is all about growth! On this week's episode I share some thoughts of how we can shift to a growth mindset, and how our Heavenly Parents can best help us and guide us when we move toward growth and learning instead of being caught in a trap of perfectionism. Challenge: Take a few minutes to think about yourself and your life— in what areas of your life are you stuck in a fixed mindset? In what areas do you have a growth mindset? How can you shift to a growth mindset in more parts of your life?
