In medical school, students learning about illness, pathology, and disease are trained almost exclusively on images of white patients. Even materials on illnesses that predominantly affect Black people, like sickle cell disease, and textbooks used in medical schools in countries where most people are Black, are filled with illustrations of white bodies and white skin. This leaves doctors underprepared to care for Black patients. For Nigerian medical student and illustrator Chidiebere Ibe, accurate representation is a starting point for health care equity. Ibe has founded Illustrate Change, the world's largest open-source digital library of medical illustrations featuring people of color. In the newest episode of The Dose podcast, host Joel Bervell talks to Ibe about his efforts to make inclusive imagery widely accessible — a critical step toward building health systems that can provide Black patients with the care they deserve. This is the third episode in a new series of conversations with leaders at the forefront of health equity.

Chidiebere is a Nigerian medical illustrator, medical student, and aspiring pediatric neurosurgeon. Shamel is the lead creative director on the Illustrate Change initiative, working alongside Chidiebere and the initiatives' partners, Deloitte and Johnson & Johnson. If you have a talent, passion or interest outside of medicine or dentistry, you might think you have to choose one or the other, but my first guest Chidiebere Ibe is living testament that your unique combination of gifts can change everything. We sat down to talk about how to use your gifts to find your purpose and build confidence in the face of adversity.Chidi's illustrations went viral in December last year and he's since been featured in major news outlets including Forbes and CNN and his work is set to be published around the world. There is a distinct lack of racial diversity in medical illustrations that has been the norm for so long. So if you haven't seen it yet, you can imagine the eye opening effect of a medical illustration of a black foetus in black mother's womb. His is a story of perseverance and belief in a purpose greater than himself that has touched lives all around the world. He applied for medical school 5 times and when he finally got into Kyiv Medical Univerisity, he crowd funded enough money to be able to attend. This episode was recorded before the recent events of the war crisis in Ukraine - thankfully Chidi was able to get home to Nigeria. It was amazing for me to delve into Chidi's thoughts on purpose and passion and I'm so excited to share this fascinating conversation with youIt is a time of great uncertainty for African medical students studying in Ukraine like Chidi, many of whom face discrimination when trying to access scholarships and funds afforded to other Ukrainian students. Combining his love for art and medicine, Chidiebere Ibe aims to diversify the medical textbooks, by incorporating more images of black people in a realm that is heavily dominated by images of white people. In today's episode, we discuss some of the progress we have seen over the past calendar year. In the first half of the show, we discuss the many high-profile trials and the favorable outcomes we have seen. We also discuss Juneteenth becoming a national holiday as well as some unlikely fans we seem to have gotten! Our Ebony Excellence goes out to a young man named Chidiebere Ibe.
Chidiebere Ibe & his passion for art and medicine was the perfect guest for DBC's 1st TIE DIE episode, where we highlight & explore the intersection of Technology, Innovation & Education + Diversity, Inclusion & Equity. We sat for a delightful convo. Tune in and find out: the big role his Christian faith plays desire to "normalize" & response to negativity thoughts on studying in the US or UK childhood sparks of creativity and surgery holiday plans I am so excited about my guest and what this young man means for the culture, our culture and for really the world in general. He's the 25-year-old Nigerian recent college graduate who has been making news and social media headlines with his medical illustrations of Black people. I sat down with him from my cozy place in the U.S. to his cozy place in Nigeria. Wait til you hear the role he said God has played and is playing in his life! He shares why he's doing this and what it means to him, and you've likely heard a lot of that, but I wanted to dig more into the makings of him. Who is he? What are his plans for his future? Is he interested in doing any studying in the U.S.? And what about his childhood? What inspired him? Parents? Siblings? An extra piece of his story that's so special is that he's self taught, SELF TAUGHT Y'ALL! Have you SEEN these illustrations? Google him! Imagine my shock when he told me he did not do art as a child, in terms of drawing. He was creative & would construct things. Plus he was into animals, you'll hear about a lizard, but a thing I really wondered about was this idea of being a doctor and an illustrator. I often see one or the other – the doctor focuses on medicine and hires an illustrator; or an artist/illustrator often focuses only on drawings and not on medicine, so the fact that these 2 fit so perfectly together for him piqued my interest. He talks about that, and that also made him the perfect fit for the first TIE DIE DBC episode. Enjoy! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dailybordercrossings/message
Growing up, I can't remember a time picking up a health book or reading through a medical pamphlet in my doctor's office where I would see the human anatomy illustrated using a Black person. The lack of Black representation in medical publications is glaring. Why? Today on Voices for Change we have two people who can answer that question: Chidiebere Ibe is a 25-year-old Nigerian medical student whose illustration of a Black fetus in a Black woman's womb went viral; and Dr. Charles Modlin is a kidney transplant surgeon and was named one of the Top 20 Black doctors in America. If you open a medical textbook today, the pictures on those pages will tell you a story of their own — a story about white people. Nearly every diagram in medical literature depicts someone Caucasian. That's why a diagram of a pregnant Black woman has caught the attention of people around the world. We hear from medical illustrator Chidiebere Ibe who drew that diagram.
