Todays clearing is to release the habit or energy of expecting the worst. When you're constantly preparing for the worst, you're actually designing the blueprint for struggle. Your mind is like a powerful search engine - it finds evidence for whatever you're focused on. So when you expect things to go wrong, you unconsciously create tension, miss opportunities, and often manifest the very challenges you're trying to avoid. But here's the beautiful flip side: when you release that grip of worry and lean into positive possibilities, you naturally flow toward better outcomes. Your energy is lighter, your decisions clearer, and life has a way of surprising you with even better results than you imagined. Welcome to episode #955 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Michael Morris is a renowned cultural psychologist at Columbia University, where he teaches in both the Graduate School of Business and the Psychology Department. With previous teaching stints at Stanford University and a rich educational background from the University of Michigan and Brown University, Michael has dedicated his career to exploring how culture shapes the way we think, communicate, and collaborate. His research delves into the idea that while our genetic programming primes us to learn from our communities, the actual content of what we learn is deeply influenced by the cultural environments we're immersed in. In our conversation, Michael discusses his book, Tribal - How The Cultural Instincts That Divide Us Can Bring Us Together. He challenges the often negative connotations associated with tribalism, aiming to reclaim the term by highlighting its positive aspects. Michael explains that tribal psychology is an inherent part of human nature, encompassing instincts for solidarity, imitation, and the perpetuation of traditions. While tribalism can lead to division and conflict, he argues that these same instincts can also foster unity and collective action when harnessed constructively. We delve into real-world examples, including recent tribal conflicts and protests at institutions like Columbia Business School. Michael sheds light on why individuals engage passionately in such issues and how tradition and nostalgia play significant roles in tribal dynamics. He emphasizes that technology and social media aren't solely to blame for societal divisions - rather, these platforms amplify existing human tendencies rooted in our psychology. If you're curious about how our cultural instincts shape our interactions and how we can leverage them to bring people together, Michael's perspective provides a thoughtful and hopeful outlook. Join me for a powerful exploration of the influence of language in our lives in this special, debut edition of “Skip's Quips.”   Today, I share a wisdom lesson that highlights the profound impact words can have on our bodies and minds. A seemingly innocent phrase once caused me to faint in my doctor's office. This incident underscores how words can trigger intense physical reactions, from fear to laughter. By sharing this experience, I hope to illustrate the incredible influence words wield, not only in causing fear but also in creating positive outcomes.   In addition to this personal tale, we explore the broader implications of our language choices. Words have the power to either uplift or deflate us—and those around us. As you head into the coming week, I challenge you to reflect on how your words might affect others. Whether it's offering encouragement to a friend, family member, or teammate, remember that your words hold significant power. Let's harness the power of words to shape our experiences and reactions positively.   Where's the Special Guest and What's a “Skip's Quip?"   We are doing something a little different. I'll be sharing a wisdom lesson with you—but there won't be a guest. Just me, sharing wisdom. A short wisdom lesson - about 9 minutes total. We plan to do these about 6 times a year. We're calling these special editions - “Skip's Quips.”   Don't worry, we will still bring you wisdom conversations with our special guests twice a month. Episode Summary: In this episode of The Grief School Podcast, Sharon Brubaker explores the transformative concept of balancing positive and negative emotions. She challenges listeners to embrace the idea that our human experience is meant to be a balance of both and explains how understanding this balance can increase our power and ability to effect change in the world. Sharon provides insightful reflections and practical steps to help listeners create emotional balance on purpose. Key Takeaways:   Understanding the balance of emotion can increase your power in the world and your ability to change it tenfold. Handling Negative Emotions: How do you typically handle negative emotions? Do you resist them, allow them, or try to change them?   Regular Positive Emotions: What positive emotions do you experience regularly? How do they influence your daily life?   Overwhelming Negative Emotions: Reflect on a time when you felt overwhelmed by negative emotions. What thoughts were you having, and how did they contribute to those feelings? Creating Emotional Balance: How can you create more balance between positive and negative emotions in your daily life?   Personal Meaning of Balance: What does the concept of balancing positive and negative emotions mean to you personally?   Increasing Power through Balance: How can understanding this balance increase your power and ability to create change in the world?
