Elephants, the Grass and A Teacher: Recollections and Reflections on the Nigeria/Biafra War by Chinyere E. EgbeThis book is a captivating rendition of Dr. Egbe's personal and family experiences during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970). The book will equally go down as an audacious contribution to the historiography of the Nigerian civil war. Not to mention a crash program in military history. Here, his detailed rebuttal of Brigadier Alabi's claim that the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage was the first time elephants were used in battle, comes to mind.Dr. Egbe presents several harrowing experiences and close calls with annihilation of his family. For example, after Dr. Egbe's siblings and their mother were tied up to be executed by Nigerian soldiers in May 1969, one of the soldiers discovered a photograph in which their dad was pictured with the battalion commander who had sent them to arrest the family. Dr. Egbe concludes that the leaders of Nigeria and Biafra learned little or no lessons from the tragedy.Dr. Chinyere Emmanuel Egbe is an economist and currently a tenured full professor of Business at Medgar Evers College (CUNY), where he has taught business statistics and finance since 1989. Dr. Egbe is also a Consortial faculty at the City University School of Professional Studies (SPS). At CUNY SPS, Dr. Egbe teaches Business Mathematics and also provides leadership in curriculum development.During his tenure at Medgar Evers College, Dr. Egbe held various positions. While he was dean, he led the school to gain national accreditation through the Accreditation Council for Schools of Business and Programs (ACBSP) in 2003 and continued to provide leadership to reaffirm the accreditation of the school's business programs in 2013. Dr. Egbe also wrote proposals that established two new degree programs. Community leaders have also recognized Dr. Egbe for his contributions to community Development and awarded him Certificates of Special Congressional Recognition in 2001 and 2018.https://www.amazon.com/Elephants-Grass-Teacher-Recollections-Reflections/dp/B0D3KLSGS2https://igweplinyegbe.org/https://mainspringbooks.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/22725msb1.mp3

Buncey travels to the Hertfordshire countryside to catch up with Daniel Dubois' trainer, Don Charles. With the world title fight against Anthony Joshua at Wembley fast approaching, he tells us how camp has gone and what it means to be part of such a massive event. He also reflects on his early life in the former Republic of Biafra during a four-year civil war, his subsequent move to the UK, and how a chance encounter with a young Derek Chisora at a petrol station launched his career as a professional trainer.

► Africa Fashion Up

A remarkable interview with arguably Britain's greatest living photographer, Sir Don McCullin. He opens up about his career in-and-out of war zones, saying he's been “damaged” by some of the things he saw in Vietnam, Biafra and elsewhere, and that he was “poisoned” by his profession. McCullin talks about some of his most dramatic photos and about feeling like he was “stealing” images of suffering. The legendary photojournalist also analyses the craft of modern war photography in an age of heavily restricted battlefield access and citizen journalists. Plus, Lionel dissects the latest in the competition to own the Telegraph and Alan updates us about his quest to uncover whether there was interference from a BBC director in who would become chair of the media regulator Ofcom.Enjoy one-month's free trial to Prospect's digital content, and get full access to rigorously fact-checked, truly independent analysis and perspectives.
We'll look at the Kenyan government's plan to provide universal healthcare for all its citizens. It's back on the agenda, so what will it entail? Also a Nigerian High Court rules against calling the Indigenous People of Biafra a terrorist organisation, saying it's unconstitutional. And we hear the remarkable story of a little known African anti-slave trade campaigner, Quobina Ottobah Kuguano.
Life magazine’s July 12, 1968 cover displayed a horrifying photograph of starving children from Biafra (in Nigeria during a civil war). A young boy, distressed, took a copy of the magazine to a pastor and asked, “Does God know about this?” The pastor replied: “I know you don’t understand, but yes, God knows about that.” The boy walked out, declaring he was uninterested in such a God. These questions disturb not only children but all of us. Alongside an affirmation of God’s mysterious knowledge, I wish that boy had heard about the epic story God is continuing to write, even in places like the former nation of Biafra. Jesus unfolded this story for His followers, those who assumed He would shield them from hardship. Instead, Christ told them that they’d surely face difficulties. “In this world you will have trouble,” He said. What Jesus did offer, however, was His promise that these evils weren’t the end. In fact, He’d already “overcome the world” (John 16:33). And in God’s final chapter, every injustice will be undone, every suffering healed. Genesis to Revelation recounts the story of God destroying every unthinkable evil, making every wrong right. The story presents the loving One whose interest in us is unquestioned. Jesus said to His disciples, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace” (v. 33). May we rest in His peace and presence today.
I Am Still With You: A Reckoning with Silence, Inheritance, and History by Emmanuel Iduma A deeply moving, lyrical journey through the author's homeland of Nigeria, in search of the truth about his disappeared uncle and the history of a war that shaped him, his family, and a nation In inimitable, rhythmic prose, the author and winner of the prestigious Windham-Campbell Prize Emmanuel Iduma tells the story of his return to Nigeria, where he grew up, after years of living in New York. He traveled home with an elusive mission: to learn the fate of his uncle Emmanuel, his namesake, who disappeared in the Nigerian Civil War in the late 1960s. A conflict that left so many families broken, the war remains at the margins of the history books, almost taboo to discuss. To find answers, Iduma stopped in city after city throughout the former Biafra region, reconnecting with relatives dear and distant to probe their memories, prowling university libraries to furtively photocopy illicit books, and visiting half-abandoned monuments along the highway. Perhaps, he realized, if he could understand how his father grieved the loss of a brother in the war, he might learn how to grieve his late father in turn. His is also the story of countless families across the country and across the world who will never have answers or proper funerals for their loved ones. It's a story about the birth of an artist, about writing itself as an act both healing and political, even dangerous. And it's a story about family history and legacy, and all the questions the dead leave unanswered. How much of the author's identity is wrapped up in this inheritance? And what does it mean to return home, when the people who define it are gone? Equal parts memoir, national history, and political reckoning, I Am Still With You is a profoundly personal story of collective loss and making peace with the unknowable.
