Award-winning photographer Sir Don McCullin talks to John Wilson about his cultural influences and formative experiences. He started out in the late 1950s documenting the working-class lives in the north London neighbourhood in which he had grown up. Employed by the Observer newspaper, and later the Sunday Times, McCullin photographs captured scenes of struggle, despair and violence. Travelling to the front lines of conflict zones in Cyprus, Beirut, Vietnam, Cambodia, Biafra, Northern Ireland and elsewhere, McCullin earned a hard-won reputation as one of the greatest war photographers of all time. In recent years he has focused his lens on the beauty of the natural world, particularly the landscape around his home in Somerset. His work is held in permanent collections around the world including the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and the V&A. He was knighted in 2017 for services to photography. Producer: Edwina Pitman

Hosted on Acast. In 1967, Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka tried to stop the country's Biafra war, in which Nigeria's Igbo people responded to violence by seceding from the rest of the country. They proclaimed a new Republic of Biafra. When the fighting began, Soyinka was building a reputation as a poet and playwright abroad. However, in a last-ditch attempt to avert civil war, he set off on a secret mission behind the front line to meet the Biafran leader, Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. When he left Biafra, he was imprisoned by the federal government without trial for more than two years.Soyinka drew on his prison experience in his writing over the following years, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986 - the first African to win the award. #Kanu #Lagos #Nnamdi ©November 21st, 2025 ®November 21, 2025 9:48 pm Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, Nigeria Federal Capital Territory on Thursday convicted and sentenced Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to a passionate prison term of life imprisonment against the penalty of Death sentence he said he ought to have pronounced on the Biafra Republic agitation leader over the statements Mazi Nnamdi Kanu made on October 20, 2020 through Radio Biafra during the war like situation between the civilian population and Nigeria security operatives following series of reports that the Nigeria security operatives were shooting and killing innocent unarmed protesters, who were protesting against bad government and Police brutalities tagged Endsars protest, Justice Omotosho in his ruling, said, Nnamdi Kanu was responsible for the killing of 175 security operatives during the Endsars civil-military war like situation on October 20, 2020, and Justice Omotosho in his ruling, failed to state the numbers of civilians that were killed by Nigeria security operatives during the war like situation that apparently forced Nnamdi Kanu to start teaching the civilians on how to manufacture molotov cocktail also known as petrol bombs, urging them to go and meet welders to buy bullet proof doors from the welders to defend themselves and launched a retaliatory defensive attacks against the Nigeria security operatives who were accused of turning the peaceful protest into a barrage of gunfire, human rights violations and abuses, Justice Omotosho convicted Nnamdi Kanu on counts 4 and 5 over the Endsars protest and he described Nnamdi Kanu action during the violent-protest as an act of terrorism, on count one, Justice Omotosho convicted Nnamdi Kanu for an act of Preparatory to commit terrorism over statements made by Nnamdi Kanu in May 2021, Justice Omotosho in the ruling claimed and ruled that Nnamdi Kanu declared war against security operatives in the South East states without provocation, this statement by Justice Omotosho apparently made him looked like a biased person, because after Justice Omotosho read the entire seven count charge and convicted Nnamdi Kanu, Justice Omotosho thereafter recognized a media news report and broadcast of Nnamdi Kanu on April 25, 2021, wherein, Nnamdi Kanu vowed to avenge the killing of Ikonso, the then Head of Eastern Security Network, ESN, by a combined team of Nigeria security operatives led by the Nigerian Army under the command of former Chief of Army Staff, Late Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja who was then the General Officer Commanding, G.O.C 82 Division, the Nigerian Army insisted in its report that Ikonso was killed during exchange of gunfire with the security operatives, but, Nnamdi Kanu rejected the claim and repeatedly stated that Ikonso was killed in his sleep and the killing was a pure case of assassination by the Federal Government of Nigeria as a way to weaken the people of South East states and denied them the ability to be able to establish the Eastern Security Network, ESN to defend themselves against Boko Haram terrorists and expansionist foreign Fulani invaders from different countries like Mali, Gambia, Senegal, Nigerien Republic and Chad that were advancing from the Northern part of Nigeria and cruising through the Middle belt states to South East, South West and South South States, for the record, killing of Ikonso by security operatives apparently marked the genesis of the full scale guerrilla war between the Biafra armed group and the Armed Forces of Nigeria including other Nigeria security operatives, Justice Omotosho also convicted Nnamdi Kanu for the creation of unlawful organisation over the establishment of ESN in a broadcast Nnamdi Kanu made in December 2020, stating that the ESN has been created to protect the people of South east against Boko Haram terrorists, after the ruling, Justice Omotosho stated that the Boko Haram terrorists among other terrorist groups are making people not to enjoy life in Nigeria, thereafter, the Prosecution lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo told the court that in the last few days or weeks, Nigeria has been a season of victim upon victims of terrorism, Adegboyega's statement maybe inline with the current high rate of attacks by terrorists advancing from the Northern Nigeria to the Southern part, kidnapping and killing people like never before, that aside, Justice Omotosho also ruled that Nnamdi Kanu was responsible for the killing of Ahmed Gulak, the former presidential aide who was killed on May 30th, 2021 in Owerri on his way to the airport after conducting election primary, according to Justice Omotosho, Nnamdi Ka. #OsazuwaAkonedoBecome a supporter of this podcast: Today we interview Dr. Taiwo Bello about the historical and contemporary contexts of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's HALF OF A YELLOW SUN. Nancy loves this interview because neither she nor Linda knew anything about the Biafran War. Linny likes that we then talk about lessons we can learn so we don't repeat those mistakes.Taiwo Bello is an Assistant Professor of African History and an affiliate faculty member of the Africana Studies Centre at Oklahoma State University. His research and teaching interests encompass gender and women's history, war and society, violence and conflict studies, the history of crime, law, and punishment, Black and diaspora studies, genocide, human rights, and humanitarian histories, as well as global and transnational history. He serves on the Editorial Review Boards of the AFRICAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION journal, HISTORY IN AFRICA, published by Cambridge University Press; and the CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF AFRICAN STUDIES journal, the CANADIAN JOURNAL OF AFRICAN STUDIES, published by Taylor & Francis. He is a founding editor of SCHOLAR'S CORNER, a subsidiary blog of the journal, GENOCIDE STUDIES INTERNATIONAL, published by University of Toronto Press. He is revising his second book entitled SOLDIERS ON RAMPAGE: GENDER, BLOCKADE, VIOLENCE AND RESISTANCE IN BIAFRA DURING THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR, 1967-1970. The book examines the impact of the wartime violence between the Nigerian and Biafran soldiers on Biafran women and their families, and the women's responses to wartime atrocities. The book demonstrates how food was central to the constant violence unleashed on women in the heartland of Biafra. His forthcoming book, INVENTING ORDER: CRIME, LAW, AND PUNISHMENT IN NIGERIA AND THE DIASPORA, adopts a multidisciplinary approach to examine the evolution of crimes (armed robbery, immigration fraud, financial fraud, drug trafficking) in Nigeria and their local and global implications.

This month we're reading HALF OF A YELLOW SUN by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Listeners might remember Episode 88 when our guest to discuss Chinua Achebe's THINGS FALL ABOUT, Dr. Thomas Jay Lynn, mentioned one of his favorite books about Africa was HALF OF A YELLOW SUN. We made a note of that, and here we are! Chinua Achebe's THINGS FALL apart was one of Linny's favorite books we've read. So, she was interested to read this book that takes place 80 years later. Nigeria is breaking apart and the Igbo people in southeastern Nigeria declare themselves a separate country called Biafra. This novel is set in the late 1960s immediately before and during the Biafran war and we meet a lot of characters, but for Nancy, it is really the story about the private lives of 20-something twin sisters, Olanna and Kainene and the choice they make turning this turbulent time. They come from an affluent and wealthy family and they've been educated in England. Olanna is the “beauty” and she is a people pleaser, and lacks confidence. Kainene is not beautiful and is blunt and is successfully assuming leadership of her father's businesses. Neither Linny nor Nancy knew much about Biafra before reading this book. Linny said she knows there has always been lots of political unrest in Africa. Nancy talks about why she thinks that is a result of colonialization. The war has a huge impact on the arc of all the characters. Olanna, because Odenigbo disintegrates, must step up and help her family survive and also becomes stronger and more confident. Kainene is confident and competent and becomes more so, eventually operating a refugee camp, becoming more a humanitarian.Nancy thinks Ugwu's journey from innocence to moral disintegration is a commentary on war. What does war do to people? We kill each other and perpetrate other inhumanities. Linny says by the end of the war, the characters have to figure out how to pick up the pieces of who they are and try to move on.

Cristo disse a eles: “Aqui no mundo vocês terão aflições…”.

Elephants, the Grass and A Teacher: Recollections and Reflections on the Nigeria/Biafra War by Chinyere E. EgbeThis book is a captivating rendition of Dr. Egbe's personal and family experiences during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970). The book will equally go down as an audacious contribution to the historiography of the Nigerian civil war. Not to mention a crash program in military history. Here, his detailed rebuttal of Brigadier Alabi's claim that the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage was the first time elephants were used in battle, comes to mind.Dr. Egbe presents several harrowing experiences and close calls with annihilation of his family. For example, after Dr. Egbe's siblings and their mother were tied up to be executed by Nigerian soldiers in May 1969, one of the soldiers discovered a photograph in which their dad was pictured with the battalion commander who had sent them to arrest the family. Dr. Egbe concludes that the leaders of Nigeria and Biafra learned little or no lessons from the tragedy.Dr. Chinyere Emmanuel Egbe is an economist and currently a tenured full professor of Business at Medgar Evers College (CUNY), where he has taught business statistics and finance since 1989. Dr. Egbe is also a Consortial faculty at the City University School of Professional Studies (SPS). At CUNY SPS, Dr. Egbe teaches Business Mathematics and also provides leadership in curriculum development.During his tenure at Medgar Evers College, Dr. Egbe held various positions. While he was dean, he led the school to gain national accreditation through the Accreditation Council for Schools of Business and Programs (ACBSP) in 2003 and continued to provide leadership to reaffirm the accreditation of the school's business programs in 2013. Dr. Egbe also wrote proposals that established two new degree programs.

Diaporama

Buncey travels to the Hertfordshire countryside to catch up with Daniel Dubois' trainer, Don Charles. With the world title fight against Anthony Joshua at Wembley fast approaching, he tells us how camp has gone and what it means to be part of such a massive event. He also reflects on his early life in the former Republic of Biafra during a four-year civil war, his subsequent move to the UK, and how a chance encounter with a young Derek Chisora at a petrol station launched his career as a professional trainer.

► Africa Fashion Up

We'll look at the Kenyan government's plan to provide universal healthcare for all its citizens. It's back on the agenda, so what will it entail? Also a Nigerian High Court rules against calling the Indigenous People of Biafra a terrorist organisation, saying it's unconstitutional. And we hear the remarkable story of a little known African anti-slave trade campaigner, Quobina Ottobah Kuguano.

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Life magazine’s July 12, 1968 cover displayed a horrifying photograph of starving children from Biafra (in Nigeria during a civil war). A young boy, distressed, took a copy of the magazine to a pastor and asked, “Does God know about this?” The pastor replied: “I know you don’t understand, but yes, God knows about that.” The boy walked out, declaring he was uninterested in such a God. These questions disturb not only children but all of us. Alongside an affirmation of God’s mysterious knowledge, I wish that boy had heard about the epic story God is continuing to write, even in places like the former nation of Biafra. Jesus unfolded this story for His followers, those who assumed He would shield them from hardship. Instead, Christ told them that they’d surely face difficulties. “In this world you will have trouble,” He said. What Jesus did offer, however, was His promise that these evils weren’t the end. In fact, He’d already “overcome the world” (John 16:33). And in God’s final chapter, every injustice will be undone, every suffering healed. Genesis to Revelation recounts the story of God destroying every unthinkable evil, making every wrong right. The story presents the loving One whose interest in us is unquestioned. Jesus said to His disciples, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace” (v. 33). May we rest in His peace and presence today.
