In Part 2 of this series, Miyaovich and Rossi discuss: the operational facts of NICS, society's need to have discomfort minimized by "having something", the question of a standard for when legal mechanisms work, OSD's anonimized black box criminal check app idea, being over the status quo, and the fact that NICS...as constucted...simply does not have the capacity to handle Universal Background Checks.
In Part 1 of this series, Miyanovich and Rossi discuss: how gun rights absolutism ignores 50% of the rights-based fight, Chuck working with the FBI on Fix NICS in 2016, Facebook's gun content policy, the myth of gun industry dominance, the need for more world beaters, and anti-gunners representing an unattractive position.
In part 2 of this series, Miyanovich and Rossi discuss: the reality of guns in the Silicon Valley tech bubble, progress at the perimeter of guns being stymied by "black holes", guns being an unprecedented opportunity to change the world, and the difference between male gun owners who have to compromise and male gun owners who just mail it in.
In the final part of this series, Miyanovich and Rossi discuss: the inclusion of mitigating the negatives into gun-owner mentality, how government employees are not set-up to succeed in their efforts, what would it really take to progress the gun paradigm permanently, finding good people, OSD's offer to help everyone with gun-related social media issues, and Chuck's select-fire desires.
In part 1 of this series, Miyanovch and Rossi talk about: the gensis of Open Source Defense (and their values), "coming out of the gun closet", the legacy of gun culture negatives, the emerging new paradigm, the realities of the internet, and solving problems by participating with people of all beliefs.

Jimmy, Mark, and Erik sit down with Chuck Rossi, avid firearms enthusiast and former Facebook employee where he worked as an engineer behind the scenes and the “subject matter expert” on all things gun related in the company. There seems to be a million and one theories as to why social giants like this have tended to be so stringent upon the gun and hunting industry. Listening to Chuck, some of the reasons likely won’t shock you, but others may be a bit more surprising in terms of the fact that there are many misunderstandings and fundamental lack of education within organizations and groups of individuals. We learn a bit more about “safety regulated goods” on platforms like Facebook and the blocking of buy/sell/trade of firearms and related parts on their site. Certainly a sore subject for many of us in this industry, but luckily Chuck throws out some really great insight into how gun pages on these platforms can promote themselves responsibly, within the rules, and set themselves up to get the best organic reach possible – even if they can’t run ads or directly sell on their page. So, if you like guns and hunting and find yourself on social media frequently, whether it’s for business and leisure, you should definitely tune in to this one! As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation podcast by asking us on Instagram @vortexnationpodcast
This is a replay of an interview I did with Chuck Rossi back in 2018. With all the problems with social media these days, I thought it would be a good idea to bring this interview back. How many of you have had issues with Facebook when it came to one of the ads you were running? Or maybe your page, group or even your profile was banned for violating the firearms policy? Wouldn’t it be nice to talk to someone on the inside of Facebook to know what is the correct practice when it comes to posting firearms content? Well, funny you should ask since my guest today was that guy. Chuck Rossi was the director of release engineering at Facebook and also worked on fixing the firearms policies. After 11 years at Facebook, chuck retired and I was able to get him on the podcast. Chuck is one of us. He enjoys shooting from a young age and helped shed light on the good of firearms when the media only focused on the bad. Lots of value here today. "The bottom line here, and this is what Open Source Defense focuses on, is we cannot be an unpopular minority. Take those two things together and look at history at unpopular minorities, and it's not pretty. Right now, hunters and shooters are becoming unpopular minorities."— Chuck Rossi I don’t really think I know many people like today’s guest. He’s a bit of a unicorn among people I know. Honestly I imagine he’s kind of a unicorn in many of his own circles. Chuck Rossi is a firearms expert and shooter, who used to work at Facebook. Not only that, but he was in during the early days of Facebook, just four short years after it launched. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgtFJxUunQk&t=1s Watch this interview It’s crazy how social media has evolved since then. Mark Zuckerburg had no idea what he was creating with that platform. No one did, him or the investors who dumped millions in to make it happen. But last year, Facebook did about seventy billion dollars in revenue. While it’s a great entrepreneurial success story, it’s not necessarily played out so kind for a few industries. Firearms is one of those. There are all kinds of conspiracies on what goes on behind the scenes of these algorithms. And no one really knows. Actually, some people know. And today’s guest is one of them. Show Notes: BJ's Medium Link Open Source Defense Website The Prepared Website Restless Native is brought to you by GoWild Download GoWild today.
