In today's episode, Leslie welcomes back Jim Palmer, a former evangelical mega church pastor turned advocate for religious deconstruction and non-religious spirituality. They delve into Jim's transformative journey from his early religious experiences to his crisis of faith and subsequent shift towards helping others navigate religious trauma and existential health. Jim shares insights from his recent sabbatical on a secluded island in British Columbia, discussing the importance of community, critical thinking, and self-trust in the deconstruction process. The conversation touches on the evolution of religious beliefs, the impact of societal structures on personal well-being, and the broader implications of moving towards a more inclusive, meta-modern understanding of spirituality rooted in personal meaning and love.Learn more about what Jim does on his website: https://nonreligiousspirituality.com podscan_CTf7ven7MdKvY3wpy2gLNP28R0XfPHdm Honoring the Journey is hosted, produced and edited by Leslie Nease and the artwork for the show is also created by Leslie Nease.Want to get updates/announcements and a FREE Deconstruction Journaling Prompt PDF? Over the years, our collective philosophy and approach to coffee has taken many forms as we learn more about what the industry needs to thrive. We as individuals evolve our thoughts and views of coffee often starting with hubris and a strict puritanical view, then opening up to a wider, simpler, generous, and maybe even humble stance on the various ways coffee can be enjoyed and communicated. Today we are talking about one such journey with the Founder of Fieldwork Coffee and Director of the World Aeropress Championships, Tim Williams! Tim Williams is the director of the World AeroPress Championship, and founder of Melbourne's Fieldwork Coffee. Since the early 2000's, Tim's worked across a range of roles, including Workshop Coffee and Square Mile Coffee Roasters in London, and Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea in Los Angeles. On the sidelines, Tim's collaborated on a number of coffee initiatives including helping to develop Maison Kitsuné's 'Cafe Kitsuné, launching the Gitesi Project, and as a founding member of Coffee Common. Today, Tim lives in Melbourne and divides his time between Fieldwork Coffee, the World AeroPress Championship, running a small charity in rural Rwanda, and raising three kids with his partner, Leah. We talk about: Tim's journey into coffee The exploding London coffee scene The shaping forces of competitions and camaraderie Absolutism in coffee culture and its pitfalls. Understanding coffee requires recognizing its agricultural nuances. Tim emphasizes the importance of hands-on experience in coffee roasting. Cupping coffee critically is essential for quality control. Tim's philosophical shift from conquering coffee to celebrating its complexities. Why specialization allows for deeper expertise in coffee. Innovative approaches can streamline coffee release processes. Customer expectations are shaped by consistent quality. Why critical feedback is s necessary for growth in the coffee industry. How the World Areopress Championships champion fundamentals. The argument for taste as the most important aspect of coffee. Understanding brewing variables enhances coffee quality. How nuance in coffee brewing leads to better results. In Part 3 of the Election Debrief series, Miyanovich, Sorum, and Ashe discuss: everyone's initial election expectations, the popular vote vs the Electoral College results, cult-of-personality and the dangers of the MAGA movement, universal platform issues, "radical centrism", the negative effects of niche issues, the lack of "liberal" leadership, and pernicious absolutism.
Explore the pressing question of our time: How do we counter authoritarianism without falling into dogma ourselves? In this thought-provoking conversation, John Atack and Jeremy Sherman tackle the rise of absolutist movements, the role of irony and curiosity in challenging dogma, and the existential challenges facing humanity in an increasingly complex world.

Are you living an ethical life? Sounds like a strange question, but after much talking about living in a way that is aligned with our beliefs, we could go deeper and discover if they underpin a way of living that is good for us AND for the others. In an age of relativism where many think that what *they* believe is the absolute truth, that impossible to discuss, in a world where there is no longer right or wrong (or is there? Maybe it has always been there) it's fascinating to discuss an ethical life from a different point of view. For this conversation I was honored to host the Ethics Ninja, professor, Rabbi and Ted talk speaker Yonason Goldson. Together we go deep into the realm of what an ethical life might look like in our families, at work and - why not - in businesses and governments. Tune in to find out what it takes to live ethically, doing good and taking responsibly and ultimately experiencing a much richer and more fulfilling life - while allowing others to do the same. #ethical #living #ethics #morality #values #purpose #mindfulness #conscious #living #personal #growth #self #improvement #social #responsibility #business #ethics #leadership #relativism #absolutism #Yonason #Goldson #Ethics #Ninja #Ted #Talk #podcast Video link https://youtu.be/hGw2Va6z6C8 Yonason Goldson took the long road to the rabbinate, graduating the University of California with a degree in English Literature, circumnavigating the globe, hitchhiking across the United States, and backpacking across Europe before he settled into nine years of talmudic scholarship in the Land of Israel. Good riddance to George Lakoff's Moral Politics! In this season finale, we discuss the last section of Lakoff's book, in which he lays out his reasons for being a liberal. His reasons are of course based on his book-long characterization of conservatives as being stupid, crazy, and evil, so his stance is not exactly one we agree with. We also discuss what pieces of value we gained from reading this book and lessons for the future as we move on to Season 9!Follow us on Twitter, and send us some book suggestions for Season 9! https://twitter.com/UlmtdOpinionsGive us your opinions here!
This lecture discusses the 19th-20th century philosopher and psychologist, William James, and focuses on his essay, "The Will To Believe". Specifically it discusses the relationship between certitude or certainty and truth. James distinguishes two different orientations towards these, which he calls empiricism and absolutism. Absolutism holds that we can attain some absolute certainty, and that we can know with certainty that we know the truth. Empiricism about philosophy notes that there is no criterion for truth about which there has been a consensus. Is the sexual revolution the true cause of moral relativism, or are the two intertwined? In this final episode covering Peter Kreeft's A Refutation of Moral Relativism, we look at some of the biggest cultural issues in the world today, particularly contraception, abortion, and divorce. We also take a retrospective look at the book as a whole, discussing what we admire about Kreeft's writing, how ahead of his time he was, and our own predictions for the fruits of relativism going forward! We were always destined to publish this episode, at least according to the crazy determinists! Join us as we discuss how language proves absolutism correct, the poor track record of relativism, and how relativists only extend tolerance to those that they like. What does hemlock taste like, and if drank in a small enough dose, can we find out? This important question and much more is discussed in this episode of Unlimited Opinions, as we examine where the philosophy of relativism came from. We talk about how reductionism has led to a complete lack of acceptance of anything beyond the physical world and how this has impacted morality, and especially how this has impacted education. We also talk about how reductionism refutes itself and how it just makes someone miserable!Follow us on Twitter! https://twitter.com/UlmtdOpinions

"Be better:" the new horrible slogan for Unlimited Opinions! In this episode, we look at Peter Kreeft's answer to one of the most difficult objections to moral absolutism: if there are absolute moral truths, why have there been cultures with wildly different moral norms? In this episode, we find a new favorite feature of the podcast: relative buzzing! We also continue looking at Peter Kreeft's conversation between an absolutist and relativist, this time examining how exactly to define moral relativism, separating it out from metaphysical, epistemological, and religious relativism. We also discuss how we're facing a new, dangerous form of epistemological relativism that says that people really can't know anything about someone else, and how this is seen in the world today. And as always, we go on several side tangents, including about the "one-shirt" murderer and Apocalypse Now!Follow us on Twitter! https://twitter.com/UlmtdOpinions

We're looking at the things that trouble people the most about Christianity. Now, we come to one that could be put like this: “Christians believe they have absolute truth. They have some things everyone should believe and everyone should do. But people who have absolute truth,” the objection goes, “undermine freedom. They tend to oppress people who are different than they are and impose their views on others. Everyone should be free to determine their own truth and what is right or wrong for them.” What do we say to that? There are three things to say. Truth is a lot more important than you would think, freedom is a lot more complex than you would think, and Jesus is a lot more liberating than you think. Those principles are found in this passage. Let's look at them. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 8, 2006. Series: The Trouble with Christianity: Why It's So Hard to Believe it.
