One Day with Jon Bier
Ep. 39 - From WresleMania to CrossFit with Joshy G

One Day with Jon Bier

In this episode of One Day with Jon Bier, Jon sits with Joshy G to discuss everything from comic books and collectibles to functional fitness and pro wrestling. Jon and Joshy dive into the world of kayfabe and the challenges the internet age has imposed on maintaining the illusion that pro wrestling isn't staged. They also discuss how some celebrities, like Brock Lesnar, have harnessed kayfabe to their advantage. Finally, they touch on the importance of community within CrossFit gyms, and what to expect as the social media generation slowly takes over as the face of fitness and wrestling. Josh Gallegos, aka Joshy G, served for years in the Los Angeles community as a Coach and General Manager to some of the most popular functional fitness gyms in LA. Ever versatile, he also acts as emcee for many competitions both locally and nationally and is a head emcee's for the Reebok CrossFit Games, televised on ESPN. Josh is a CrossFit Endurance Coach, as well as a CrossFit Level One and CrossFit Level Two Trainer. In his spare time, Josh co-writes programming for several professional wrestlers including, WWE Superstars, Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, Bayley, and Cesaro. Powerful Quotes by Joshy "If CrossFit wants to get back to the way it was so popular in its heyday, community has to come first." "You want to be able to understand the process if you want to be able to sell the product." Key Highlights Joshy discusses how CrossFit programming is a great way to get in a good workout without spending hours in the gym. He explains how great CrossFit workouts can range anywhere from 10-12 minutes, and breaks down the bodybuilding and Olympic lifting components typically incorporated into workouts. We explore the importance of creating a strong community within a CrossFit gym and how a leaderboard can be used to motivate or intimidate gym members. We examine the success of gyms like CrossFit South Brooklyn and CrossFit Soul in creating an environment that feels like a family. We also discuss how gyms can use events and merch to make it more than just a place to work out and how coaches can create an experience that is like an adult recess. Finally, we consider how CrossFit can use its infrastructure to cultivate community and make the open a bigger deal. The ultimate luxury in life is being comfortable in your own body. A gym or private trainer can do more than facilitate your health and fitness. They can, by extension, teach you life lessons and help you see improvement beyond your fitness. Welcome to #BeerFestFridays! Beer Fest Fridays, where beer meets barbells! In this episode of Beer Fest Fridays the guys talk to Sean Vela’s from Crossfit Soul. From talking about Sean’s foundation in martial arts and how he trained under Tiff’s Dad. Sean found out about CrossFit and realized he was already doing a lot of CrossFit stuff. Ever since an early age Sean had the encouraging fact, that things that were hard for other people, were easy for him. Once he coupled that with the martial arts philosophy of paying forward the knowledge that was taught to him, instructing CrossFit — and more specifically, the gymnastics aspects of CrossFit — was natural fit. In this episode. Frank also shares a cool CrossFit story and once he started he realized he loved it. He fit in with the CF Soul culture and interned at Soul and eventually became a coach. CrossFit literally changed the course of his life. Beer: Socrates made Micheladas! Screw beer purists, they’re cold, spicy, refreshing and easy to make: - 1 fresh squeezed lime juice (whole lime) - 2-3 dashed of Mexican hot sauce, we used Valentina - Stir - Add 1 Modelo or other Mexican lager to a salted rimmed glass

We're calling this one The Good, The Bad, and the WTF   We kick this weeks episode off with Jorge and David discussing their experiences taking the CrossFit Level 1 Trainers Course last weekend at CrossFit Soul. David talks about his experience taking the course for the second time and how it differed from his first experience and how the course has changed in the 5 years since he first took it. While an avid CrossFit and fitness enthusiast for close to 10 years, Jorge has never coached or had any formal exposure to the CrossFit Methodology from a theoretical standpoint. He discusses what his experience was like and what he was able to take away from the course.    We then get into the WTF discussion of CrossFit HQ and their social media shitstorm. Earlier this week CrossFit HQ and The CrossFit Games Facebook and Instagram accounts were taken down. Naturally, this caused mass hysteria throughout the community and those now covering media in the space. We later (after this was recorded) came to find out this was due to Greg Glassman's opposition of the way Facebook handles its user data amongst other things. Whether it makes sense or not, whether we buy it or not, this is the reality we are now living in. Tune in to hear our thoughts, our concerns, and how Team Soul and CrossFit Soul will move forward.   Team Soul Barbell just started a new Olympic weightlifting cycle that will lead right into the Florida Weightlifting State Championships on July 20.
