When Chris Canfield first messaged me about his upcoming show "The Games We Play," I was struck by how our creative paths had converged despite beginning worlds apart. Chris grew up in Chicago with a magician father who filled their home with card tricks and coin sleights—magic wasn't special, it was simply what they did. Meanwhile, I was discovering similar wonders in the remote landscapes of Norway. What makes Chris's story extraordinary isn't just that he grew up surrounded by magic, but that his parents opened a game store where play became the center of their family life. Board games, puzzles, chess sets—these weren't just products but portals to connection. Chris learned early that games create spaces where adults and children meet as equals, where the boundaries between work and play dissolve. When tragedy struck at sixteen with his father's unexpected death, Chris stepped away from magic, finding the association too painful. His creative energy channeled into music instead, where he developed a custom guitar pick for his right hand (Chris was born with a limb difference) and discovered the transcendent joy of improvisation. As we discussed the parallels between musical flow states and magical performance, it became clear that different forms of play share profound connections. The heart of our conversation explores how Chris's theatrical show "The Games We Play" integrates his personal narrative with interactive magic and games. Rather than performing conventional tricks, he creates experiences where audiences become participants in a shared journey. "I'm trying to blur the lines between games and magic," he explains, crafting moments that feel both impossible and emotionally resonant. For those fascinated by the psychology of performance, Chris offers valuable insights about breaking down the traditional barrier between performer and spectator, creating what I call "a third space" where co-creation happens. His show traces the evolution of games from their earliest forms to modern iterations, examining how play shapes our emotional lives and helps us process our most profound experiences.Whether you're a performer seeking fresh approaches to audience engagement, a game enthusiast curious about magic, or someone interested in how childhood experiences shape creative paths, this conversation illuminates the transformative power of play. Let Chris Canfield's journey inspire you to rediscover your own playful spirit and perhaps see magic in unexpected places.Support the show...Now you can get t-shirts and hoodies with our wonderful logo. We often try to change others when we don't like how they behave or react to things. We like to point out what's wrong with them without noticing our own flaws. Instead of judging, we should look at others with empathy and love.

Welcome back to Friendship Therapy, the podcast in which we look at friendships through a therapeutic lens. This week, Emma is joined by Holly to talk about friendship heartbreak and how it feels to be dumped by a friend. When Holly's two closest friends got engaged, she found herself waiting for an invitation to be a part of the bridal party that never came. What happened next was a slow and painful reevaluation of the terms of a friendship that had formed such a significant and meaningful part of her life for more than a decade. In this conversation, Emma and Holly discover how a text message about wedding planning would unravel a whole decade's worth of friendship and, ultimately, reveal a much more conditional connection built on conflict avoidance and adaptation.Through the Transactional Analysis theory of games, we look back to the beginning of Holly's friendship game to help her understand what went wrong and learn how to avoid the same heartbreak in future. To learn more about transactional analysis and the games people play, visit: https://www.mindtools.com/ayjtd4p/transactional-analysisIf you'd like to apply to appear on the podcast, please click the link below to fill out the form: https://forms.gle/9yZAVgF9BbyKhwsV7---Friendship Therapy is hosted by Emma Reed Turrell, produced by Chris Sharp and Lauren Brook.--- Social media: Emma Reed Turrell @emmareedturrellFriendship Therapy @friendshiptherapypodEmail: contact@friendshiptherapypod.co.uk

In today's episode of Daily Creative, we dive into the fascinating world of games and their impact on our creativity, leadership, and everyday life. Neuroscientist and physicist Kelly Clancy, author of "Playing with Reality," shares profound insights into how games have shaped our world and our thinking.Kelly reveals how play is hardwired into our biology and explores its crucial role in learning, social development, and strategic thinking. She provides vivid examples from tech leaders and businesses, illustrating how game design principles can apply to leadership and incentivizing desired behaviors. Finally, we discuss misaligned incentives in organizations and how to create environments where creativity and strategic thinking can thrive.Key Learnings:Games and Fairness: The story of the Patriots fan underscores the complex nature of fairness in games and life and invites us to question the rules we follow.Biological Roots of Play: Play is an evolutionarily ancient behavior essential for learning, social skills, and dealing with uncertainty.Games in Technology: Many influential tech leaders began by designing games, highlighting the value of games in developing problem-solving and systems-level thinking.Incentive Alignment: Misaligned incentives within companies can lead to undesired outcomes and employee frustration. Effective game design can help correct this.Resourcing Creativity: Brave leadership involves providing the necessary resources and space for teams to thrive, pushing back against unrealistic expectations that stifle innovative work.Get full interviews, daily episodes, courses, and more at DailyCreative.app.
