In this episode, we explore a common myth in the dog world: are dogs inherently "good" or "bad"? Or is it more accurate to understand dog behaviour in terms of what's desirable or undesirable from a human perspective? We'll break down how this thinking affects the way we train, live with, and advocate for our dogs.

In this episode, we explore the idea of requiring a licence for dog ownership. With growing concerns around public safety, responsible pet care, and the rising number of dog-related incidents, some argue that a licensing system could help ensure owners are properly educated and prepared. Others believe it could create unnecessary barriers and punish responsible dog owners. We weigh the pros and cons, consider examples from places where such systems exist, and ask what responsible ownership really looks like. Today I'm speaking with Pano Kanelos, founding president of the University of Austin. A scholar and professor of Shakespeare studies, Panos' advocacy for the liberal arts eventually lead him to become president of St. John's College in Annapolis. In the past few years, Pano has found himself at the center of an academic project that seemed rather unlikely in an era where the big universities are getting bigger and other colleges are shuttering their doors. The University of Austin's creation points to the potential for dynamism and change in academia. While it's just getting started, the story of University of Austin is one to follow for anyone interested in how higher education is changing in the 21st century. Richard Tomlin of Apex Auto Works takes us behind the scenes of high-performance vehicle builds and international racing adventures that push the boundaries of what's possible. From a meticulously restored Panos destined for a private museum to unconventional engine swaps that challenge conventional wisdom, Richard's projects showcase the ingenuity that defines passionate automotive specialists. The heart of our conversation reveals the calculated risks automotive enthusiasts take when pursuing their passion. Despite Mexico being under a Level 4 travel warning with cartels recently classified as terrorist groups, Richard explains why his team still plans to participate in their upcoming Mexican road racing event. "Where we're going, it's not usually a case," he notes, distinguishing between their federale-protected route and the more isolated desert racing that occurs elsewhere. This fascinating risk assessment offers listeners an authentic glimpse into how automotive enthusiasts balance passion with practicality. We explore why certain racing events simply can't happen on American soil, with Richard lamenting that "US laws don't allow us to play like that," revealing how regulatory and insurance hurdles force enthusiasts to look beyond borders for certain experiences. This juxtaposition of American caution versus international opportunity presents a thought-provoking dimension to automotive culture rarely discussed in mainstream conversations. The episode rounds out with a journey through automotive history, including the birth of the Chevrolet Caprice, the legendary Shelby GT350H "Rent-a-Racer" program, and how unexpected events like the Three Mile Island nuclear accident shaped automotive design trends by influencing fuel economy regulations.Whether you're a dedicated gearhead or simply curious about the lengths people will go for their automotive passions, this episode offers invaluable insights into the calculated risks, creative solutions,Be sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!ProAm Auto AccessoriesProAm Auto Accessories: "THE" place to go to find exclusive and hard to find parts and accessories!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon interviews Panos Kakoullis, a long-time Purple Patch athlete, at the Hawaii IRONMAN training camp. Panos shares his Greek Cypriot background, growing up above a fish and chip shop, and his journey from becoming an accountant, later Senior Partner at Deloitte to CFO at Rolls Royce. He discusses his transition from powerlifting to endurance sports, influenced by his wife, and his 16 IRONMAN completions. Panos emphasizes the importance of consistency, recovery, and integrating sport into life. He highlights the role of curiosity, growth mindset, and releasing mental weight in his success. Looking ahead, he plans more marathons and a cycling trip across Italy. Panos reflects on the challenges and successes in his professional life, including the importance of integrating sport into his busy schedule. Panos recounts how he and his wife decided to do a marathon and then a triathlon, despite initially swearing never to do an IRONMAN. He emphasizes the importance of consistency over heroism and the need to prioritize recovery and nutrition. Spades was my beloved dog of 14 years and he has sadly left us. We dedicated this episode to him and talked all about his life, to celebrate the life of the best dog. From being a shelter puppy, to joining my family to then work with me and witness starting my own family, Spades was apart of this era in my life. His passing is the closing of one chapter in my story and I'm so happy he was able to share it with me. Thank you Spades for teaching me so much. We are honoured to share his story with you. Panos shares a recap of 2024, his favourite episodes of last year and what lessons he's learnt in his dog training experience. This week's topic was all about dog's being creatures of patterns and as a dog owner, the importance of acknowledging patterns in your dog's behaviour. Your patterns of behaviour influence your dog and now that we are back to the beginning of the year, after some time off, you may notice new or challenging behaviour in your dog. A dog can be predictable if you can understand their patterns via body language, situational awareness and what motivates the dog. It's easy only once you can be aware of it.
