Ep271 - The big 3 factors affecting your dog's health, with Dr. Will Maginness

Panos sits down with Dr Will Magness — veterinarian and founder of 5 Hounds dog food, to unpack some of the biggest (and often most misunderstood) topics affecting dogs today.   The conversation explores the three major factors influencing dog health, why Dr Will started 5 Hounds, and the common issues seen in kibble-only diets. It also dives into proper feeding, the link between food and allergies, and the ongoing discussion around early desexing, including ideal timing and possible alternatives.   They examine whether dogs are being over-vaccinated, why yearly vaccinations are still commonly recommended, and what a titre test actually is and when it makes sense.   This is a balanced, practical conversation, not fear-based, not dogmatic — just honest discussion about diet, development, and long-term health.   For anyone serious about raising a healthy, resilient dog, this episode will get them thinking. In this inspiring conversation, Dr. Laura Scherck Wittcoff welcomes Antonis Politis and Panos Kokmotos, two young Greek entrepreneurs who co-founded Givelink, a donation platform transforming how people give to nonprofits. GiveLink connects donors directly to nonprofits' real needs through in-kind giving, creating transparency, measurable impact, and genuine engagement every step of the way. KEY TOPICS DISCUSSED The Origin Story: How a Controversial Article Sparked an Idea Antonis shares how a Greek nonprofit's Christmas message telling people to "stop giving items" prompted him to reimagine philanthropy. Rather than dismissing the request, he saw a logistics problem waiting to be solved—what if nonprofits listed their actual needs and donors could order products online? From University to Startup: Building Givelink in Greece Starting as a university student with no business experience, Antonis entered a social entrepreneurship competition and realized he could combine profit with purpose. Despite initial struggles, the concept resonated with people who preferred in-kind giving over monetary donations due to trust concerns. The Café Meeting That Changed Everything Panos Kokmotos overheard Antonis's passionate conversation about Givelink's vision in a café and was immediately drawn to the mission. A few days later, they met for coffee, and Panos recognized how his skills and experience could fill critical gaps in the team. He joined the founding team, bringing operational expertise and entrepreneurial background. Building Trust in a Low-Trust Giving Culture Greece presented both a challenge and an opportunity. With only 10% of the population donating money to nonprofits, Givelink had to rebuild trust in philanthropy. This difficult market became a proving ground that made the team stronger and forced them to deeply understand donor psychology and nonprofit needs. The Data-Driven Insight: 60% More Giving One of Givelink's most significant findings: donors using the platform give 60% more throughout the year compared to before. Even in economically struggling Greece, transparency and tangible impact motivate people to give more frequently and more generously. The Problem with Seasonal Giving Antonis and Panos explain why giving peaks at Christmas and Thanksgiving—people lack confidence that their money is used wisely. Givelink solves this by making giving year-round, transparent, and emotionally rewarding through visible impact. How the Platform Works: Four Simple Steps Nonprofits set up real-time product wish lists of items essential to their operations. Donors browse the lists or use Smart Pick, which converts a dollar amount into the products needed most. At checkout, donors see the exact impact story—how many people they're helping and how their lives will change. After delivery, donors receive photo proof and ongoing impact updates. The "Smart Pick" Feature and Personalized Impact Panos demonstrates how donors can either manually select products or use Smart Pick to automate the process. When buying hygiene kits for a nonprofit helping children in Oakland, donors can see exactly how many children they'll impact and what difference those products will make—creating an emotional connection and retention. A Real Crisis: The Wildfire Response When wildfires devastated their Greek city in August, Givelink mobilized immediately. Two nonprofits supporting firefighters and victims added urgent needs to the platform. The response was staggering: over $30,000 in donations and 40,000 products in a single day. The team stopped all other work, gathered supplies in supermarkets, and personally delivered items to firefighters—experiencing firsthand the power of their mission. Scaling from Greece to the United States After proving the model in Greece, Givelink launched a pilot in the Bay Area (Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco, Palo Alto) and is now expanding across California with plans to cover Los Angeles, smaller cities, and rural areas that often lack philanthropic funding. Legal considerations around tax deductibility vary by state, but the model is ready to scale nationally. Nonprofit Needs: From Food to Furniture In Greece, food dominates nonprofit wishlists, along with cleaning and hygiene products. In the U.S., a standout example is BOSS, a nonprofit helping people transition from homelessness and incarceration back into society. They needed bedsheets, pillows, and furniture—small items that are expensive and transformative when someone is rebuilding their life. Supplier Partnerships: Wholesale to Retail Givelink partners with wholesale suppliers like Group Sales and Dollar Days (30+ years in the nonprofit space), as well as Amazon for retail options. This tiered approach ensures nonprofits get the best prices and donors have flexibility in what they can give. The Role of AI in Storytelling Givelink is launching AI-generated impact stories based on nonprofit data, descriptions, websites, blogs, images, and videos. This allows donors to see personalized stories at checkout—how their specific donation will change lives. The long-term vision is to integrate real stories directly from nonprofit beneficiaries. Training your dog isn't about flashy skills or perfect reps in perfect conditions — it's about reliability in the real world. In this episode, we break down what proofing really means and why so many dog owners get stuck when behaviour “falls apart” outside the training session. We talk about why you started training in the first place, how your lifestyle should shape your dog's training, and why rushing the process usually backfires. We cover the importance of developing your own communication with your dog, creating consistency across environments, and understanding that some behaviours aren't “fixed” — they're managed. Training, at its core, is about learning a shared language and culture with your dog, not blindly following rules forever. Learn the rules first… then earn the right to break them. This episode is a practical reminder that there's no one right way — you need to find your way with your dog. Dan returns for round two, and this one goes deep. In this episode, we unpack intrinsic motivation in dogs—from prey drive to play drive—and how those drives differ, overlap, and actually show up in real-world training. Not theory for theory's sake, but how these concepts matter when you're working dogs day in, day out. Dan shares lessons learned from years of working dogs, alongside his experience with reactivity in pet dogs. Watching dogs work provides perspective—how dogs think, act, and learn—and that perspective is often missing when people rely solely on what they see online. We also talk context. Techniques, clips, and hot takes on social media mean nothing without experience behind them. Keeping an open mind is easy to say, harder to do—especially when exposure is limited. He could have built the pedagogically perfect platform.Instead, he put the scientists in the backseat and listened to what customers actually needed. That decision took him from building in isolation to 12,500 customers across 150 countries. This inspired me to invite Panos to my podcast. We need to solve their real problem, not the things that we have in our mind."By listening to this episode, you'll learn:Why theoretical expertise becomes dangerous when it silences customer problemsWhat happens when you marry deep capability with practical customer needsWhen customers show you markets you never planned to serveWhy solving today's customer problem beats building tomorrow's perfect productGuest InfoGuest: Panos Siozos, CEO & Co-founder Learnworlds Website: www.learnworlds.com

Trained as a civil engineer, Panos transitioned from traditional structural engineering into sensing, data, and predictive maintenance through research at ETH Zurich, where the foundations of Irmos were built.Panos shares how his work in the critical infrastructure sector operates in slow-moving, highly regulated markets where trust, references, and execution matter more than speed. Panos shares why Irmos deliberately delayed raising a large funding round, how the Swiss startup ecosystem supports founders at early stages, and why focus is a decisive advantage when resources are limited.Panos goes deeper into the realities of building a hardware and data-driven company: reducing uncertainty in engineering decisions, moving from gut-feeling inspections to measurable risk at portfolio level, and narrowing focus after an initial phase of experimentation. He reflects on fundraising timing, working with public-sector clients, learning from Founder networks, and the long-term vision of turning infrastructure monitoring into a scalable, data-powered standard. The cover portrait was edited by www.smartportrait.io.‍Don't forget to give us a follow on Instagram, Linkedin, TikTok, and Youtube so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. Most dog owners walk their dogs every day… and still end up with pulling, reactivity, and chaos on the leash. Why is that? In this episode, Panos and Luke break down the 20/20/20 Rule — a simple, repeatable walking structure that balances discipline, freedom, and training. You'll learn why the walk should be split into three clear phases: • A structured loose leash walk to set the mental tone • Free time with purpose — including real-world training • A structured return to help your dog regulate and settle This episode explains how to stop turning walks into overstimulation sessions and start using them to build focus, reliability, and a calmer dog at home. If your dog “gets plenty of walks” but still behaves like they've had three coffees, this one's for you.   Find us online >> Panos @ www.npdogtraining.com >> Luke @ www.instagram.com/itslukebadman >> www.facebook.com/lifewithyourdogpodcast >> www.instagram.com/lifewithyourdogpodcast >> www.lifewithyourdogpodcast.com

From Discovery to Delivery: Charting Progress in Gynecologic Oncology, hosted by Ursula A. Matulonis, MD, brings expert insights into the most recent breakthroughs, evolving standards, and emerging therapies across gynecologic cancers. Dr Matulonis is chief of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and the Brock-Wilcon Family Chair at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, both in Boston, Massachusetts. In this episode, Dr Matulonis sat down with guest Panagiotis (Panos) A. Konstantinopoulos, MD, PhD, to discuss the different subtypes of endometrial cancer and treatment developments for this disease. Dr Konstantinopoulos is the director of Translational Research in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, the director of the Mellen and Eisenson Family Center for BRCA and Related Genes, and the Velma Eisenson Chair for Clinical and Translational Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; as well as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Drs Matulonis and Konstantinopoulos explained that patients with mismatch repair–deficient (dMMR) tumors substantially benefit from a decreased risk of progression or death when immunotherapy is added to standard therapy. They noted that immunotherapy appears important for the management of dMMR tumors, even those in earlier stages or in patients who have no measurable disease remaining after surgery. For MMR-proficient (pMMR) tumors, Drs Matulonis and Konstantinopoulos highlighted that PD-1 blockade combined with chemotherapy improves survival vs chemotherapy alone, but that this benefit is not as substantial as that seen in dMMR disease. Crucially, they reported that if a pMMR tumor has no measurable disease after surgery, adding immune checkpoint blockade does not appear beneficial. They stated that tailored treatment approaches are key for managing pMMR disease subtypes. They added that hormonal therapy may be used upfront for slow-growing, estrogen receptor–positive metastatic disease. They continued by saying that DNA damage and replication stress are critical targets, particularly in p53-mutated tumors, like uterine serous cancers. Furthermore, they stressed that although the antibody-drug conjugate fam-trastuzumab deruxtecan-nxki (Enhertu) is highly effective in HER2-positive tumors, treatment with this agent requires monitoring for toxicities, including interstitial lung disease and decreased ejection fraction.

Send us a textBridging climate science and the classroom can start with a simple walk to a place that matters. In this episode, we talk with Kristin Valle Geren—former elementary teacher, now a doctoral candidate and research assistant with the Stories-To-Live-By collective—to explore how story and place help children make sense of climate change in their own communities. Kristen shares how “Explorers Club” invites elementary students to read the world around them: snapping photos by the Hillsborough River, mapping school grounds, composing social media-style videos, and asking the questions adults often miss. A small linguistic shift—asking what “matters” rather than what's “important”—unlocks personal stories and genuine curiosity, turning observations into research and narratives. From Hurricane Irma's lingering impact in the Florida Keys to slow, uneven recovery across tourism economies, we trace climate as a lived, local reality that shows up in housing, work, and daily routines—not just in headlines. If you're curious about how you might integrate climate literacy without overhauling your curriculum, this conversation offers concrete moves, hope, and a path forward rooted in eco-justice, local knowledge, and the everyday literacies students already use.Kristin Valle Geren is a doctoral candidate in the Literacy Studies program in the College of Education at the University of South Florida and the Graduate Research Assistant for the Stories-to-Live-by Collective. Before beginning her doctoral studies, Kristin taught elementary school and worked as a literacy coach in Tampa, Florida. Specifically, she worked in the community where she now engages in community-based educational research in an after school program with elementary-aged youth. As a child, Kristin's family moved often due to her father's military service, but she has lived in Florida for over 20 years now - all of her adult life. She came to the Stories-to-Live-By project through her interest in the ways children and teachers make sense of the places in which they live and teach and the possibilities of placemaking literacies for exploring issues of climate crisis. You can read about Kristin and Alex's collaborative work here: Geren, K. Or is it more accurate to understand dog behaviour in terms of what's desirable or undesirable from a human perspective?   We'll break down how this thinking affects the way we train, live with, and advocate for our dogs.   Find us online >> Panos @ www.npdogtraining.com >> Luke @ www.kizunacanine.com.au >> www.facebook.com/lifewithyourdogpodcast >> www.instagram.com/lifewithyourdogpodcast >> www.lifewithyourdogpodcast.com

In this episode, we explore the idea of requiring a licence for dog ownership. With growing concerns around public safety, responsible pet care, and the rising number of dog-related incidents, some argue that a licensing system could help ensure owners are properly educated and prepared. Others believe it could create unnecessary barriers and punish responsible dog owners. We weigh the pros and cons, consider examples from places where such systems exist, and ask what responsible ownership really looks like.   Find us online >> Panos @ www.npdogtraining.com >> Luke @ www.kizunacanine.com.au >> www.facebook.com/lifewithyourdogpodcast >> www.instagram.com/lifewithyourdogpodcast >> www.lifewithyourdogpodcast.com
