Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott called upon the governors of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota to prevent Tyson Foods from moving more than 500 jobs out of the tri-state area. The food company will be closing its corporate offices in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota – which borders Sioux City. The large community employer will be consolidating all three of its corporate offices to its headquarters in northwest Arkansas.Scott said Tyson's move will have a terrible impact on the area, resulting in the loss of 580 jobs for the area. He asked the tri-state governors – Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem – to step in.“Go see the people at Tyson, write letters, do whatever,” he said at a city council meeting on Monday evening. “But, take the lead on this because they are not going to listen to local communities and it is terribly important that we don't lose those jobs.”Employees at the Dakota Dunes office will have to opt to relocate to the corporate headquarters or accept a severance package. The company's processing plant in Dakota City will not be impacted.Scott said the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce has been unsuccessful in its attempt to get Tyson to reconsider its decision. In a statement to the Sioux City Journal last week, Chamber president Chris McGowan said the organization would work “tirelessly” to assist the impacted employees find new jobs locally.U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra, who represents the 4th Congressional District, also issued a statement last week, urging the company to reconsider their decision to move the office.“This decision is absolutely contrary to the values I share with the Siouxland community, and represents a complete disregard for the employees and families who have been loyal to Tyson for more than two decades,” part of Feenstra's statement read. The relocation process will begin in early 2023, according to Tyson Foods announcement.
Sioux City refugee organizations have resettled about 50 Afghan refugees into the community since their arrival in August, after their country fell to the Taliban. But, an even larger group of refugees has moved to western Iowa to work for Tyson Fresh Meats at the Dakota City plant just across the border in Nebraska. For many, that means living hours away from their caseworkers and the resources they need to start anew.

Will returns to the show to talk about the 2001 limited series STATIC SHOCK: REBIRTH OF THE COOL! Released to coincide with the launch of the Static Shock cartoon, Rebirth of the Cool was an attempt to revive the Milestone comics universe four years after the sudden cancellation of every title in the line, and features 15 year old Virgil Hawkins once again taking the name Static to save the heroes of Dakota City from a new threat.(Note: Will's microphone decided to bite the dust halfway through the episode. We made it work the best we could, but there are some lingering issues.)
Gun deaths have been surging in Iowa as a law is set to go into effect that will allow people to more easily buy handguns and carry them in public without training or a permit. The Iowa Department of Public Health said Tuesday that a record 353 people died from gunshot wounds in Iowa in 2020, a 23% increase from the previous high in 2019. This year saw 85 firearm homicides, an 80% increase. Suicides still made up three of every four gun deaths in the state. A leading gun violence researcher said he expects Iowa's sweeping handgun deregulation that begins Thursday to make things even worse. No one was hurt either in the vehicle or train. The company says the incident happened at a crossing with warning signs. Statement from BNSF surrounding train derailment near Dakota City, Nebraska: “BNSF
With the construction of the railroad, towns blossomed every few miles along the tracks, and each was confident that it would soon grow from a village to a prosperous city. On this date in 1946, it was much the same as a super highway was constructed for the Garrison Dam. Shacks and shanties were thrown up every few miles, and each location had ambitious names like Gateway, Dakota City or Silver City.

The National Weather Service says an “impactful” winter storm is moving into the region Tuesday and Tuesday night. Moderate to heavy snow is expected with 3 to 7 inches for Siouxland. Because of the incoming winter storm, there have been snow emergencies issued for several Siouxland communities, including Sioux City, South Sioux, Dakota City, North Sioux, Hinton and Norfolk, Nebraska. Heavy, wet snow will blanket much of the state tomorrow so forecasters recommend putting off travel plans until the winter storm has passed. Four to eight inches of snow could fall across most of Iowa. The higher amounts are most likely in the central and eastern parts of the state, including Des Moines, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids and Dubuque. According to Roger Vachalek, a forecaster at the National Weather Service office in Des Moines, the snow could fall at up to an inch per hour at times, making it hard to see on the road. “Highly recommend people find a different time to travel. Postpone anything that

COVID-19 has struck cities and towns with meatpacking plants particularly hard. Nebraska cities and towns like Grand Island, Lexington, Crete and Dakota City are no exception. My legal practice takes me face to face with these workers and employers in those cities and towns. In this episode, I talk about COVID-19 and workers' compensation as well creative ways workers are skirting the limited remedies of workers' compensation to hold the packing plants legally accountable for their role in the COVID-19 crisis.
