Joseph P. Illidge is a name that rings bells in my circle of comics fandom. Over 31 years, he has helped usher in stories featuring many of my favorite characters of all time. Static. Hardware. Nightwing. He paired Greg Rucka with Shawn Martinbrough for one of the most acclaimed Detective Comics runs, and even oversaw the No Man's Land event in the Batman office. What else would you expect from someone who learned under the direct tutelage of the late Dwayne McDuffie? Today, Joe joins the show to talk about his career, the importance of supporting Independent Black Comics, and his involvement in the crowdfunded project Epiphany Engine, arguably the biggest Black Comics crossover of all time. About Joseph P. Illidge:Joseph started his editorial career at Milestone Media, Inc., the influential comic book publisher profiled in the MAX documentary “Milestone Generations”His groundbreaking editorial runs on the Batman line of comic books for DC Comics and Lion Forge's “Catalyst Prime” superhero imprint featured in The Hollywood Reporter  reflect Joseph's expertise in curating inclusive hero fiction.Profiled as one of the “Best Editors” in comics, Joseph was featured in the History Channel documentary series, “Superheroes Decoded”, discussing popular heroes from Superman to The Black Panther.Joseph is a member of the Board of Directors for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and the recipient of a Citation from the New York State Assembly for exemplary community service through career achievement. About Epiphany Engine:EPIPHANY ENGINE is a 192-page, original graphic novel composed by some of the best, most talented African American Creators in the Comic Book Industry. Dubbed "The Dream Team", these creators represent Black Excellence in every aspect of the game.  Basically, this is a vision powered by creative excellence. The story centers around the McKali family, a family of brilliant scientists, whose latest experiments to better mankind by unlocking the secrets of the universe are met with horrifying results. As an experiment brings forth a mysterious being, a cosmic-level threat named Abzylom, who wants to collapse this reality and mold a new universe while destroying the family in the process. While trying to stop Abzylom, tragedy strikes the family and they are separated from one another and scattered across the multiverse. Unfortunately, they must also deal with the consequences that their failed experiment has gone astray, accidentally disrupting the fabric of the multiverse and placing creation itself at risk.  The family must save not only themselves but existence as we know it as well.  Consequently, the rupture has brought great beings of power to action. With the odds stacked against them, the brave McKali family has to not only escape from the clutches of their cosmic foe but also build an army of heroes from across the multiverse to defeat Abzylom, as well as find each other and heal from their family's loss. This is only the beginning of the thrilling adventure that awaits you in the pages of the EPIPHANY ENGINE Graphic Novel! To honor the late M.D. Bright (and the late Dwayne McDuffie), we caught up on the first 10 issues of their Milestone Comics launch title Icon! How does it hold up 30 years later? And what about those other 32 issues?

The Iron Age of Comics

Milestone Media's Icon has a pretty punchy elevator pitch: “What if Superman was a Black Republican?” But with stories by Dwayne McDuffie and pencils by M.D. “Doc” Bright (both now sadly no longer with us), this book goes to some interesting and unexpected places. For one thing, this Supermanalogue has a sidekick: a teenage girl named Rocket who is arguably the real protagonist of the book and whose struggles and issues are the most complex and heartfelt that the book explores. We discuss how McDuffie and Bright tackle teen pregnancy in an honest and conscientious way through Rocket and examine racial identity and privilege through the title character, acknowledging there are no easy answers for any of the questions being raised.

Thirty years ago, Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Derek Dingle, and Michael Davis founded Milestone Media to try to encourage diversity both on the comics page and in the talent pool. Static (minus the “Shock” at this point) was deliberately conceived of as a youthful Spider-Man figure for a new generation and went on to become the publisher's most enduring character. We discuss the series' balance of social issues and good-old-fashioned superheroics, the way it deliberately avoids easy answers and simplistic characterizations, and how Milestone stacks up against the other “startup” universes of the 1990s.

I grew up on the west side of baltimore and was a bit of an inside kid. Always loved watching TV and movies and Playing Video games. One day my mother got me a copy of Hardware #1 written by Dwayne McDuffie. At the time I had no idea how big it was to have a comic book done by an all black company. From here is was hooked. My dad would always take me to stores and I'd pick out what I would want was always drawn to the Black Panther who I consider my favorite hero. Kept reading and watching Tv and Movies through college (I went to NCA&T AGGIE PRIDE) and loved talking all things pop culture with friends. From there I feel in love with short form content and liked giving movie news, but this decided to do something different and educate a little on the history of Black Comics in different media forms. In the grand tradition of raining on everyone's parade, we're bucking our usual schedule and revisiting/taking to task the critically acclaimed, Academy Award winning Sony Animation extravaganza Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a film Letterboxd users have rated as better than Goodfellas, Sunset Boulevard, and Persona. While the internet is currently freaking out over trans-coded Gwen Stacy, Nicole, Stu, and resident Spider-Man expert Cole bring some clarity to an admittedly beautiful looking but otherwise bog-standard Marvel movie about multiverses and believing in yourself that's very clearly written by white people trying to appeal to the young PoC Tumblr demographic (save for co-director Peter Ramsey). The only thing whiter than the production team behind Spider-Verse are the creative minds who brought us Miles Morales, a character whose origins lie in someone at Marvel thinking, "What if we made Spider-Man a young Obama?" And before you come to yell at us for not liking your favorite movie of all time, consider reading the late Dwayne McDuffie's 1989 letter to Marvel calling out the whiteness of their black characters and see just how prescient it reads regarding the creation and use of Miles Morales.   Thank you for listening! It was founded in 1993 by a coalition of African-American artists and writers, consisting of Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle. Thirty years ago, Milestone Media dropped into comic shops. Their books were almost unrecognizable next to the other comics being published at the time. They were politically charged, radically motivated, and bursting with boundless creative energy. Founded by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle, Milestone Media changed the game and delivered iconic characters like Static, Hardware, Blood Syndicate, Rocket, and, yeah, Icon. If you want to understand the context surrounding Milestone's creation and its profound impact on the industry, you need to check out the documentary Milestone Generations, currently streaming on HBO Max. Our guest this week, Evan Narcisse, worked extensively on the film. He's also been cranking out rad comics like Wildstorm vs. Waller and the short story "Universal Beings," which appeared in DC Comics' recent Milestone 30th Anniversary Special. "Universal Beings" is a magnificent tale, a catastrophic tiny epic that smashes the original Milestone Universe from 1993, with the updated version dominating comic shops today. Inspired by the classic multiversal comic "Flash of Two Worlds," Narcisse's story allows him to confront contemporary notions of progress while supplying a kickass superhero adventure. What would 1993's Static think of 2023's Static, and vice versa? The conversation is thematically charged like all good Milestone books. Narcisse also takes a moment to celebrate the genius of Dwayne McDuffie and all the eclectic voices that pulled Milestone out of nothingness and gifted the world the Dakotaverse, an unparalleled comics arena. In addition to relaunching these classic characters, DC Comics recently published two massive compendiums collecting the nineties Milestone stories. They are worth your attention. Also, be sure to follow Evan Narcisse on Twitter. Before Evan Narcisse joins the show, Lisa suffers through Brad's long-winded review of his 2023 WonderCon experience. You're paying attention if you can sense a little jealousy in that last sentence. Or is that envy? You'll have to listen to next week's podcast to answer that last question. Just know this, Brad had an amazing time in Anaheim, filled with all manner of creator interactions, panels, and comics purchasing. The WonderCon Review ends at the 21:56 minute mark. The hits just keep on coming as the Good Brothers wrap up their month with the Justice League Unlimited episode "Question Authority" which just happens to be the beginning of the end of the celebrated Cadmus story arc. The hosts take their time looking at the layered plot that both acknowledges the past and the present with threads pulled from Superman: The Animated Series whilst continuing the present story of intrigue and holding those with the most power accountable for their actions. While the plot carries most of the episode, Cal & Liam do discuss the few action sequences and how a faceless hero's descent into madness is portrayed. Music also plays an important part in several of the big scenes, as does the vocal performances with their differing styles of acting in this dialogue driven episode. All of this, heaps of accolades for Dwayne McDuffie's writing and Jeffrey Combs turn as The Question and much more await on this week's deep dive of this legendary episode on the DCAU Review! So tune in to hear Cal & Liam break down an incredible story from Dwayne McDuffie, Dan Riba and J.M. DeMatteis that is layered with subtext from the political era from which it was birthed along with some rather difficult coming of age and life lessons with a dash of everyone's favorite "Cancel culture" thrown in the mix. The hosts also discuss the episode's violent and destructive battle that they argue would make Zack Snyder proud. I currently am a master's level graduate from Bowie State University's Mental Health Counseling Program. I graduated with my Master's in Mental Health Counseling in Summer 2021. Where my future aspirations will take me into the clinical field of Therapeutic work. My main modality of study has been Existentialism and Adlerian where I enjoy to writing papers in the field of Imagination lore and sexology under topics considered taboo. I find there is more research to be done in such areas. I am a late bloomer to the world of education. I never thought myself college worthy till a sickness at the age of 34 robbed me of my hearing in my left ear. Working a public sector job, I was threatened with losing my job for the hearing impairment. No other options, I returned to school. All my classes started at the remedial level. Within 4 years I graduated undergraduate from UMUC with a B.A. Degree in English. Having accomplished what, I once thought was impossible, I challenged everything about myself and went on to write novels, screenplays and research articles. I am testament to what one can do when faced with adversity and crisis of existential proportions. I've always wanted to write a fiction novel. There were many reasons, but none stood out more than wanting to be a black author that rights fiction on par with other great fictional works. I didn't want to be thought of as stereotypical by writing the typical realness of society books. I wanted to give people escape from the real. Real is what we do all day every day. I write mainly in the genre of fiction. I like what if scenarios, and closer looks at people that may have been in pivotal moments of our history, but had made a decision other than what we know them for. I like to tell such stories. I have established a platform of fans overtime and will work and continue to build more as I get ready to release book 3. I was inspired to write after following the works of C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Dwayne McDuffie, Brian Keene, and Brett Breeding. I write to the voice that I hear in my head when writing and creating a universe. I don't censor myself as it may stop the flow. I'll leave that for the editors of my finished product. I've never been the one to seek fame. I'm just looking to find a home to tell great stories. I also want to break the mold, and be a great African American fiction writer that gives escape into worlds where people don't have to be them, but look through the eyes of characters that they can only wish to be.Follow Arrow J. Dwayne McDuffie, born on February 20th, 1962, was a writer of comic books and animated television shows. McDuffie began his writing career working with Marvel Comics where he created Damage Control (a group formed to clean up the messes left behind by battles between heroes and villains) and created a new variation of Marvel's Deathlok character. In the 1990s, McDuffie co-founded Milestone Media, the company behind the Milestone Comics imprint that originated such characters as Icon & Rocket, Hardware, and the beloved Static. In the 2000s, McDuffie began to work on animated television shows including Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Ben 10: Alien Force, and Static Shock (the animated adaptation of the character Static). Dwayne McDuffie has stated that the creation of Static was a group effort.[citation needed] Originally developed for Marvel Comics, Static would become a main staple of the Milestone line. Much of the inspiration for Static came from Marvel's Spider-Man. When initially creating the first five characters for Milestone Comics, it was decided that Static would be created as a teenage hero who was a contemporary version of Spider-Man. Static's civilian identity, Virgil Hawkins, was named after a black man who was denied entrance to the University of Florida's law school in 1949.Milestone ceased publishing comics in 1997, but Static was saved from obscurity by The WB animated series Static Shock, which aired for four seasons and led to the 2001 comic book miniseries Static Shock: Rebirth of the Cool. The 2009 trade paperback of this series was nominated for a Glyph Comics Award for Best Reprint Collection.
