For a long time, I was worried that I had burned myself out of my love of superhero comics. Nothing was making me excited to just talk about DC Comics, specifically like it did when I was growing up. My brother and I have been talking about these characters our whole lives as a site/podcast for years now. So, losing that spark was weighing on me, but recently, that spark was reignited with such a fire that burns harder than ever. The reason is the Absolute Universe. I don't think I am the only one either because the conversation about these books all over the place is overwhelmingly positive and upbeat in every space I see. People are just having fun reading these books and talking about them. I was lucky enough to sit down with Scott Snyder for the first time to talk about the Absolute Universe. We started our conversation out by talking about a touchstone for both of us which is horror. Snyder got his start and cut his teeth in the horror world, and it's something he has never left, even with Absolute Batman. But we quickly switch to the Absolute universe and it's conception. We get into all the facets of the universe to it's birth, conception, what's to come, and more. Scott talks about how he ended up on Batman and his reluctance to even write the book, which comes as a shock if you have read the book. Scott Snyder reveals his one non-negotiable for this book, which ended up being what made this version of Batman so impactful as a modern version of Batman. Scott also reveals a LOT about Darkseid since the events of the events of DC ALL IN. Be sure to check it out if you want to know how the Absolute books came to be and what the universe is all about or what the goal of the books are!
Jace and Rocky chat about the DC Comics titles for the week of March 12, 2025. It's a fantastic week with DC Vs Vampires going to war with Darkseid while Black Lightning looks to transition into a new role in the Power Company in the final issue of his mini-series. Aquaman runs into an old acquaintance but is she friend or foe? The mystery of Memento continues in Batman and Robin while a new version of Scarface emerges in Dark Patterns. Green Lantern Corps is wildly paced and packed full of action with fantastic art and Absolute Superman #5 gives us the final moments of Krypton in the Absolute Universe. Join us to hear about all these books and more.

DC December continues! Christopher Cantwell is an Eisner Award nominee and one of the writers and creators of the TV show Halt and Catch Fire. Christopher joins Jimmy on the Cryptid Creator Corner to talk about Plastic Man No More (the trade is out April 8, 2025) as well as the brand new Challengers of the Unknown (issue #1 is out December 18, 2024). Christopher talks about this new series, working with artist Sean Izaakse, the history of the Challengers and what he loves about these characters. Plus, Jimmy and Christopher chat about Jimmy's favorite series that Christopher wrote: The Blue Flame (with Adam Gorham, Kurt Michael Russell, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou). This was such a fun conversation that you don't want to miss. Challengers of the Unknown From the publisher Throughout DC's history, the Challengers of the Unknown have been on the front lines when it comes to investigating the strange and unusual. This December, these investigators of the weird make their DC All In debut with the new Challengers of the Unknown, a five-issue limited series written by Christopher Cantwell (Plastic Man No More!) with art by Sean Izaakse (Green Arrow). Spinning out of Absolute Power and the DC All In Special, the terror of the Darkseid shock wave has cascaded across the DC Universe…tearing open the very fabric of time and space itself! Only one band of super-scientists have the right stuff to challenge the fate of a universe: the Challengers of the Unknown. Ace Morgan, June Robbins, Prof Haley, Red Ryan, and Rocky Davis, adventurers “living on borrowed time,” run day-to-day operations for the Justice League's Watchtower base in orbit above Earth, collaborating with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the League to seal the rifts that threaten the galaxy. But a mysterious foe from the Challengers' past lurks in the shadows, and its connection to the Darkseid wave will put not only the Challengers, but all of the DC Universe on borrowed time. Plastic Man No More From the publisher Eel O'Brian might be a superhero now—but before he was anything else, he was a crook. Until the accident that turned him into the pliable Plastic Man, Eel was bad to the bone…and just because he no longer has bones doesn't mean that's not still true. When an incident on a Justice League mission leads to catastrophic cellular damage, Plastic Man discovers he just might be out of time to make amends for the past he's tried hard to outrun—or to save the soul of his son, who (unfortunately for him) might have inherited more from dear old Dad than just his superpowers. Jace chats with wrtier Ram V about his upcoming title for DC Comics, The New Gods. In the aftermath of the seeming death of Darkseid is it time for the New Gods to be replaced and usher in a new generation of Gods? Will Highfather allow this generation of gods to be swept aside? Has the first of a new generation of gods already been born on earth? So many questions are raised on the first issue of the epic story from Ram V. Following on the heels of the DC All In Special, Ram teases is that the New Gods title will be the place to find the answers, plus this story will explain how the Absolute Universe connects to the main universe ... eventually. In the meantime, expect a ton of action, plenty of family drama, as brother vs brother is teased in this first issue with Scott Free and Orion, seemingly destined to be on opposing sides as the action ramps up. When you add in the incredible interiors Evan Cagle is doing and you have, what feels like, a sure-fire hit.

DC is ready to give their comics universe a refresh. But don't go looking for another crisis. Instead they will make sure their heroes are "All In" for a unique take on the idea of getting new readers on board. We look at how they got to this point in the universe and give our first impressions of the early stories. Plus, what is absolutely up with the Absolute Universe. Jay and Josh are "in", but are still waiting to commit to "all" on Superhero Suite.
Tim joins Vactor and SuperTim on "This Comic Cooks" to discuss DC's Absolute Power event and the All-In Special #1. Beers of the Week N/A Special Guest: Vactor.
We get a sneak peek at Absolute Superman #1 and chat with Jason Aaron about crafting a new Superman who has a very different path into the DCU. JAson discusses how he is buildign the story and statying true to the core of the character without the touchstones that Superman fans are familiar with, such as the Kents, growing up in Smallville, Metropolis and the Fortress of Solitude. Also Jason talks about the way the general public will perceive the news heroes that have been showing up in this new world that is so heavily influence dby Darkseid. Plus some talk about the costume and visual collaboration with artist Rafa Sandoval. There's a lot to unpack, not too mention the preview pages with the ominous green color tinging everything. Is this a nod to Krypton or a sign that Krptonite itself will be more readliy available on this new Earth?
Absolute Power comes to an end with issue 4 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sanchez, Ariana Maher and company! The Speakers of Geek give their thoughts on the finale and the all out battle against Amanda Waller to reclaim the DC Universe. We then spend the second half of the episode talking about the DC All In Special by Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Daniel Sampere, Wes Craig and company. The Justice League has gone Unlimited, Darkseid has returned and Booster Gold finds himself caught in the middle. Also, a recent hospital adventure update from Pants! (1:01:27)
It's the end of Absolute Power and some less-than-thrilling DC Anthologies! Then it's What Has Mark Seen and feedback! Be sure to email us your thoughts or call/text us on our voice-mail at 708-LANTERN.

Here's the run down – MultiVersus: Collision Detected #2 – 8/10 – This is too entertaining and funny. It shouldn't be this good for what it is. But I can tell you that I've played the game and this comic book is waaay better than the game. DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis #1 –7.5/10 - This was okay. Some were better than others. Some art was amazing, some just good. Altogether, better than I was hoping for. The Dr Light Story and Midnighter were both really good. DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos #1 – 8/10 – A kick the door in style of introduction to the Creature Commandos and it has me curious what the rest will look like. Good stuff so far for an intro issue. Plastic Man No More! #2 – 9/10 - This story is something else man. The art aims to be of the lighthearted variety, not super modern. Mopre classic, more cartoony. But I have a feeling that if it didn't have that, it might be hard for some people to get through. This is an intense book. So far, by far, the best Plastic Man story ever told. This is heartbreaking. The Nice House by the Sea #3 – 8.5/10 – Man… oh man. Al l can tell you is how good this is because if you aren't reading it you wouldn't understand but seriously, if you like horror and myustery… grab up the first series, nice house by the lake, and then move on to this one, nice house by trhe sea. Every issue leaves you hungry for more. Every single one. My Adventures with Superman #5 – 8/10 – I can't believe how good a cartoon tie-in book can be on the regular. The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #10 – 4/5 graded by Dash. He liked that it was spooky Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #130 – 3/5 graded by Dash. He only liked the back up. #DCAllIn #ComicsAreForEveryone #ComicsAreGreat #MakeComicsGreatAgain #AbsolutePower #DCComics #comics #comicbooks #GeekMatrix #TheGeekMatrix #TGM #GeekMatrixPod --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegeekmatrixcomics/support

Let's see if Injustice for All can truly do justice to the Justice League! Here's the run down – Trinity Special: World's Finest #1 – 6/10 Just a collected reprint of the Trinity Backups that have been in Wonder Woman recently. There's no difference. The Penguin #12 – I don't like this title at all, so I won't grade it. Doesn't seem fair. Plastic Man No More! #1 – 8.5/10 Lins, Edgar, and Maiolo make a really good team for this particular story, and Cantwell crafted a Plastic Man story that I am already hooked on, one issue in. The Boy Wonder #5 – 8.25/10 – What a great ending for the 5 issue series. The art isn't my usual preference and it took half an issue to get used to. But beside that, I truly enjoyed this series, and the ride it took Damian on. And the cool little spin that it put on We Are Robin, Damian edition. #DCAllIn #ComicsAreForEveryone #ComicsAreGreat #MakeComicsGreatAgain #AbsolutePower #DCComics #comics #comicbooks #GeekMatrix #TheGeekMatrix #TGM #GekkMatrixPod --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegeekmatrixcomics/support

This year's San Diego Comic-Con brought a lot of news. Possibly the most surprising and easily the most exciting was DC's announcement that The New Gods were coming back to comic shops and that their latest saga would be steered by writer Ram V and artist Evan Cagle. While these characters loom large over the DC universe, they've rarely carried a solo book for any significant amount of time. One reason for that might be that they're such pure Jack Kirby creations, and following in the King's footsteps is more than a challenge. If anyone is up for such a task, it's Ram V. The writer's first work within DC was on Swamp Thing, and he easily proved he could step into a beloved property and add a little of himself to it. He recognizes fans' preciousness toward Jack Kirby's Fourth World, but he equally understands how The New Gods could speak very much to the moment. We met with Ram V atop the DC booth on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con. We begin our conversation with our love for all things Kirby and move toward parenthood, specifically fatherhood, and how it will thematically propel his take on The New Gods. What has Scott Free learned from his two dads, Darkseid and Highfather? The New Gods will land in comic book shops in December, but make sure you catch up on the cosmic imbalance that launches their story by picking up The All In Special on October 2nd. To continue this conversation with Ram V, follow his Twitter, Instagram, and Website. Other Relevant Links: Ram V and Dan Watters on The Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!
