(00:00:00) The Geek Matrix Pod reviews DC's Weekly Comics Releases This week, (11/20/24), that's: (00:36:19) Action Comics #1076 (00:48:00) Batman-Superman World's Finest #33 (00:53:29) Titans 17 (01:04:50) Catwoman #70 (01:09:45) The Question: All Along The Watchtower #1 (00:41:33) Plus our Honorable Mentions covered each week by Josh! Here's the run down – Variants McFarlane Toys again for variant covers on Batman / Superman: World's Finest #33, Action comics #1076, Titans #17. Lots of pretty good variants this week, but my favorite is undoubtedly Catwoman #70 by Frank Cho, followed very closely by the Watchtower Variants from Jorge Fornes, Lucio Parrillo, and Danny Earls. Issues Batman & Robin Year One #2 – Really good. 100% Samnee art. The dialog is great and it's a really good story. 8.25/10 Batman Full Moon #2– Fantastic. Utterly fantastic. If anyone is telling you otherwise, well, the just aren't right. The art and story and dialog are all spot on in this book. 8.5/10 Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #5– Okay 5 issues in and I can officially say this without doubt. So far, Allwinter outshines the original story, and that original story was awesome… and… the art scheme. It sells it so much. Every sliver of the story is also being told in the art and the colors and if you aren't reading it, I mean this, you are truly missing out. .. 8.5/10 Jenny Sparks #4– I really don't know what I was expecting with this. At all. But it wasn't this. I didn't expect to like this. Here I am hating it. The art is really, really, really good. But that's NOT Jenny Sparks OR Captain Atom. Again, it's the art – 6.5/10 Wonder Woman #15 – Same as Jenny Sparks, but lower because this is canon, not Elseworlds. Great art. Awesome art. Really crappy story. 6/10 Milestone Universe-The Shadow Cabinet #1– So much in this issue! It really kicked this 4-issue mini off. There's a lot to the issue, and it's a good thing it has extra pages. I'm really looking forward to the next issue so we can find out more about what's going on, and what will happen with the Blood Syndicate and where are the rest of the team? Man, I love Milestone. 8.5/10. #Superman #Batman #WonderWoman #Titans #Catwoman #TheQuestion #AllAlongTheWatchtower #Milestone #DCAllIn #AllIn #Absolute #DCComics #comics #comicbooks --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thegeekmatrixcomics/support

Breaking in at Milestone with a distinctive style and artistic approach, ChrisCross is always one to keep an eye on. From those early years on Blood Syndicate and the Xero miniseries (w/ Christopher Priest) to his heroic run on Captain Marvel (w/ Peter David) and stints on Outsiders, Firestorm, and Smallville Season 11, Chris' work always shows the humanity in the heroes. But of course, there's plenty of whiz-bang too! Now, Chris is teaming up with his old pal (and past guest) Joe Illidge to bring you The Winterfields, an original graphic novel that will debut next year. But you can get a taste of the story in the expanded edition of FairSquare Comic's anthology Noir is the New Black, which comes out January 31, 2024. We take a trip to the Dakotaverse to rave about MILESTONE COMICS, the legendary African-American creator-owned comic line founded in 1993 by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle -- and we discuss the publisher's first four ongoing titles, HARDWARE, ICON, STATIC, and BLOOD SYNDICATE.
Julia Raul returns to join Diabolu Frank for the finale of our JLMay 2023 / Milestone Media trilogy of episodes. Since the previous shows tended toward paired character spotlights, we have to take a kitchen sink approach now, looking at the first year-plus of the series Blood Syndicate & Icon and the earliest Shadow Cabinet, including its launch event "Shadow War." We also return to Hardware and Static through to the intracompany event "Worlds Collide," restoring our theme and mandate by mingling in with DC's Superman Family of titles (well, the creative teams that aren't afraid to drive through the dark side of town, anyway.) Along the way, we talk Vixen, Black Canary, Green Lantern John Stewart, Steel, and more. In case you missed it, these episodes have covered every story from the trade paperback The Brave and the Bold: Milestone, which means it's time to visit the early issues of Xombi, including David Kim's team-up with the Crispus Allen incarnation of The Spectre from The Brave and the Bold #25 in the story "Annihilating Angel" by John Rozum & Scott Hampton.JLMay 2023 will cover the third volume of DC Comics' The Brave and the Bold (2007-2010), which ran 35 issues. There's only 31 days in the month, so we'll run a list of all the issues with links to the podcasts intent on covering them until the actual shows turn up, individual or in groups...Spill Some Blood!!!**across social media only. Thirty years ago, Milestone Media dropped into comic shops. Their books were almost unrecognizable next to the other comics being published at the time. They were politically charged, radically motivated, and bursting with boundless creative energy. Founded by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle, Milestone Media changed the game and delivered iconic characters like Static, Hardware, Blood Syndicate, Rocket, and, yeah, Icon. If you want to understand the context surrounding Milestone's creation and its profound impact on the industry, you need to check out the documentary Milestone Generations, currently streaming on HBO Max. Our guest this week, Evan Narcisse, worked extensively on the film. He's also been cranking out rad comics like Wildstorm vs. Waller and the short story "Universal Beings," which appeared in DC Comics' recent Milestone 30th Anniversary Special. "Universal Beings" is a magnificent tale, a catastrophic tiny epic that smashes the original Milestone Universe from 1993, with the updated version dominating comic shops today. Inspired by the classic multiversal comic "Flash of Two Worlds," Narcisse's story allows him to confront contemporary notions of progress while supplying a kickass superhero adventure. What would 1993's Static think of 2023's Static, and vice versa? The conversation is thematically charged like all good Milestone books. Narcisse also takes a moment to celebrate the genius of Dwayne McDuffie and all the eclectic voices that pulled Milestone out of nothingness and gifted the world the Dakotaverse, an unparalleled comics arena. In addition to relaunching these classic characters, DC Comics recently published two massive compendiums collecting the nineties Milestone stories. They are worth your attention. Also, be sure to follow Evan Narcisse on Twitter. Before Evan Narcisse joins the show, Lisa suffers through Brad's long-winded review of his 2023 WonderCon experience. You're paying attention if you can sense a little jealousy in that last sentence. Or is that envy? You'll have to listen to next week's podcast to answer that last question. Just know this, Brad had an amazing time in Anaheim, filled with all manner of creator interactions, panels, and comics purchasing. The WonderCon Review ends at the 21:56 minute mark. Join us for quite the MILESTONE episode! In a birthday tribute to the late comic ICON Dwayne McDuffie, we are taking our first exploration of Milestone Comics and their mega event with DC Comics, Worlds Collide. We are joined by Milestone mega fan Ethan from MakeMineAmalgam for the origins of Hardware, Blood Syndicate, Icon & Rocket and Static and the time they teamed up with Superman, Superboy, and Steel. Plus we share EXCLUSIVE behind the scenes insights from Worlds Collide and DC editor and past guest Frank Pittarese on the making of this event.Ep. 85 What if the Milestone comic universe collided with the DC universe?Earth of an unknown designation (DC & Milestone Comics), as seen in Worlds Collide 1994In honor of what would have been legendary creator Dwayne McDuffie's 61st birthday, we are taking our first exploration of the groundbreaking Milestone Comics. We start with some backstory behind this revolutionary brand before diving into the debut issues for Milestone's first heroes (or anti-heroes): the tough as nails techie Hardware, the alien Icon and his partner Rocket, the wise cracking teenage Static and the fascinating, ultra violent and very queer Blood Syndicate. We then discuss the ultra mega 14 issue event, 1994's Worlds Collide, that saw our Milestone heroes and their home of Dakota colliding (literally) with Metropolis and Superman, Superboy and Steel, all thanks to a disturbed postal worker. We wrap up by talking about the recent evolution of Milestone and why we want to see these characters on screen. All this plus insights from our special guest Ethan from MakeMineAmalgam on Twitter and special behind the scenes facts from DC and Worlds Collide editor (and past guest) Frank Pittarese. Listen to our original interview with editor Frank Pittarese from Ep 17. On this week's episode, Ariel and I fangirl over comic books, but most importantly, representation in comic books. With the focus being on the short lived 90s comic book series, Blood Syndicate.Ariel campaigns that the series be rebooted (at least for closure), I learn that 3 seconds can mean life or death, and even in comic books you still can't beat racism...you just super powers instead.Follow your host:https://www.instagram.com/andy_ricks/https://twitter.com/Andy_RicksFollow Ariel Estrada:https://www.arielestrada.com/https://www.instagram.com/arielestrada1/https://twitter.com/arielestrada

Dwayne McDuffie is one of the most important creators in the modern era of comics. Probably best known, and most importantly, as the co-founder and one of the architects of Milestone Media, a comic book company focused on better representing minorities in comics. There he would create or co-create titles such as Static, Icon, Blood Syndicate, and Hardware. Elsewhere, his work includes seminal runs on Fantastic Four, Deathlok, Firestorm and creator of the abundantly clever Marvel Comics series Damage Control. In addition to his work in comics McDuffie was a prolific writer, story editor, and producer of fantastic animated programming including Ben 10 Alien Force, Static Shock, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. The panel is honored to shine the spotlight on the one and only Dwayne McDuffie.
Suuperhero STATIC SHOCK! A resident of the Milestone Universe, Virgil Hawkins is the superhero Static. A universe populated with predominantly black superheroes. Through Static you can discover all types of new stories like ICON and BLOOD SYNDICATE. We delve into a story about black characters told by black creators on this celebration of Black History Month. Hopefully, one day, during this show we can delve into black stories through comics damn near every episode. There just aren't enough and I believe it is the great shame of comics. Until there are more black creators, we need to celebrate what we have. WEBSITE- thisguyhasissues.blogspot.com TWITTER/INSTAGRAM- @thisguyhasissues
We talk about gangs as used in superhero comics, with some talk about real world racism, the role of the gang and what causes them to flourish and even some of that fancy-pantsy academical stuff! Also, Clay goes the whole episode forgetting that Blood Syndicate exists, the silly.
In 1993 DC began to distribute a series of comics written by, illustrated, edited and created by a coalition of African-American writers and artists known as Milestone Comics. Milestone brought us Static, Icon, The Blood Syndicate and other creations that still are popular today. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/stuffudontneed2know/message
