Dana Sue Gray became a serial killer in 1994. Dana used her shopping addiction as a way to cope with her trials in life. When the money dried up, Dana targeted the most vulnerable people she knew. Within one month span, this dirtbag took the lives of three elderly women and attempted to take a fourth. Due to good police work and a super accurate composite police sketch, Dana was arrested before she could continue to terrorize her California community. Today we're bringing you a woman who started off life pretty innocuously, but boy is there a hard shift after a little bit of time. Dana Sue Gray is probably gonna go down in LTF history for the dumbest defense given in court. Literally everything she tried was stupid as hell. The one positive thing I can say about her is at least she was terrible at getting away with her crimes so not that many people got hurt. Come listen to her story and judge her with us. Enjoy!
After a rocky childhood, Dana faced losing her Mother to cancer at the young age of 14. Despite getting kicked out by her Father and Stepmother at 16, Dana went on to graduate high school and attend college to pursue a career in nursing. Inspired by the nurses who took care of her Mother, she wanted to help others in such a time of need. Unfortunately, Dana's addictions caused her life to come crashing down and within months of losing her nursing job, she began taking lives instead of saving them. She targeted elderly women who lived alone mostly. She may have gotten away with it longer had it not been for one victim who survived. Dana made the mistake of attacking a woman who worked at an antique shop who was younger and stronger than the other victims. When detectives connected the crimes, it wasn't long before they identified her. Tune in as Savannah gives an insightful take on this tragic serial killer's life and Elysia is somehow both speechless and not surprised by Dana's audacity. Join comedians Rachel Fairburn and Kiri Pritchard-McLean as they explore a shared passion, serial killers. Each episode the pair will talk all things murder and macabre and have a right laugh doing it. This month, we're looking into the life and deaths of Dana Sue Gray. She had a penchant for shopping and - much to Rachel's dismay - murdering older ladies. There's also a deep dives into windsurfing, lost socks, and an unsuccessful trip to a Hampstead Heath psychic. February 16th: Dana Gray's First Victim Found (1994) Money is one of the greatest motives. An excuse used time and time again to take a human life. On February 16th 1994 the first victim of a greedy serial killer was found in a case that, at its root, was all about the money. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dana_Sue_Gray, https://murderpedia.org/female.G/g/gray-dana-sue.htm, https://joniejohnston.medium.com/an-armchair-analysis-of-female-serial-killer-dana-sue-gray-1f7d7b642b7b, https://wickedness.net/serial-killers/dana-sue-gray/ Learn more about your ad choices. Impeccably dressed and put together, Dana Sue Gray spared no expense on herself. Dropping thousands of dollars on a shopping binge or a luxurious day spa was nothing out of the ordinary for Dana-nor for many wealthy women. But Dana wasn't wealthy-she was an unemployed nurse. She was also a serial murderer, who preyed upon elderly women, violently killed them, then used their credit cards to embark on wild, post-murder spending sprees. Sources: Braidhill, K. (2014). We all think we know the story of Rosa Parks. She was an old, tired woman who got on a bus in segregated Montgomery, Alabama. When the white bus driver asked her to give up her seat to a white passenger, Rosa refused. She was tired! Her feet hurt! For refusing to move, Rosa Parks was arrested. Then, oopsies, she became a civil rights icon! … well, that’s not quite how it went down. Rosa Parks wasn’t that old. Her feet didn’t hurt. When she refused to give up her seat, she knew exactly what she was doing. She’d been a take-no-shit activist her entire life. Then Brandi tells us about a serial killer. When Alice Williams showed up at 86-year-old Norma Davis’ house and shouted her name, Norma didn’t respond. Alice became concerned. So she cautiously made her way through Norma’s home. That’s how Alice discovered that Norma had been brutally murdered. A knife stuck out of Norma’s neck. Another stuck out of her chest. About a week later, another woman in Norma’s gated community was murdered. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: An episode of the show “The Origin of Everything,” titled “Is the Rosa Parks Story True?” A Ted Talk titled “The real story of Rosa Parks -- and why we need to confront myths about black history” by professor David Ikard “Rosa Parks,” entry on Wikipedia “Edgar Nixon,” entry on Wikipedia “Recy Taylor,” entry on Wikipedia “Browder v. Gayle,” entry on Wikipedia In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Dana Sue Gray” episode Diabolical Women “Addicted to Luxury: The Pampered Killer” by Katherine Ramsland, The Crime Library “Justice Story: Serial killer Dana Sue Gray offed elderly women so she could shop with their credit cards” by Mara Bovsun, New York Daily News “Dana Sue Gray”http://wikipedia.org YOU’RE STILL READING? The vicious murders of three elderly women frightened an entire town, causing people to sleep at the homes of friends and family. A young and relatively inexperienced detective is placed on the case. When the killer is finally caught, the motive seemed a bit far fetched for the brutality of the killings.
