New York resident and author, Flora Qian was born and raised in Shanghai but has lived in Singapore and Hong Kong, where her ancestors had lived, and in Washington D.C. before settling in New York. This cross cultural and multilingual experience influenced her debut novel, “South of the Yangtze.” At once a coming-of-age story and a meditation on language itself, South of the Yangtze is Flora Qian's award-winning debut novel that follows Yinan Qian, a girl growing up in Shanghai at the turn of the century. Set against China's rapidly changing political, economic, and social environment from the 1980s to current day, South of the Yangtze is a thoughtful reflection on both physical migration and migration between languages. Layered with history, it provides a moving portrait of China's only child generation and the meaning of identity. In an interview, Qian could discuss: WRITING: · South of the Yangtze is fiction but draws from Flora's life experiences. Did this make it easier or more difficult to find Yinan's “voice” while writing? · With language being such a central theme to South of the Yangtze, why did Flora choose to write the book in English? · The book frequently references Chinese words and history. How did Flora balance explanation for an audience that may not be well-versed in Chinese culture while remaining authentic to her vision? · Which books have influenced Flora the most as a writer? In South of the Yangtze, Dream of the Red Chamber has a special place for Yinan and her friend, Jie. What is its significance? CHINESE CULTURE & LANGUAGE: · Her experiences growing up in China during the only-child mandate, which lasted from 1979 to 2015. · Flora has lived in Shanghai and Hong Kong, as well as the United States. What were the major cultural differences? Did they inspire South of the Yangtze in any way? · Did Flora's experience living in Hong Kong during the protests of 2019 – 2020 influence South of the Yangtze? · What it was like to witness enormous socioeconomic shifts in China through her childhood and into her adulthood. · One of the book's main themes is how language shapes thought. With Chinese being one of the oldest living languages, is it especially poised to do so? Why did Flora choose to write the book in English? · Given how rapid the changes to China were following the Cultural Revolution, how does South of the Yangtze preserve a specific and unique moment in China's history? · There are frequent references to Chinese folktales in the novel. How do they play a role in Flora's writing life? · One of the early relationships the protagonist has in South of the Yangtze is with her Mandarin-speaking teacher, who was also an activist in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protest. What is the significance of this character and their relationship? · Migration is one of the central themes in South of the Yangtze. Yinan is an emigrant (from China) and Simon is a first-generation Chinese American. They seem to share a special connection. How does Flora's experience of being an emigrant inform the novel? Sherylbass999@gmail.com or sheryl@mckinneymediagroup.com FLORA QIAN was born and raised in Shanghai. She received a bachelor's degree in English from Fudan University in 2005. After graduation, she worked briefly in the publishing industry in Shanghai, where she was as an editor and an interpreter. In 2007, Flora moved to Hong Kong for a master's degree in Translation at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. During that time, she translated Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic and Sister into Chinese, which was published in 2009. Afterward, she worked in the financial sector in Hong Kong for six years.

If you remember the #butnotmaternity campaign during the Covid-19 pandemic you'll recall that women were sometimes left to give birth without their partners. Those restrictions for maternity care were left in place far too long affecting the mental health of mothers and staff. That's according to evidence given to the Covid-19 inquiry which this week is looking at the subject in detail. The inquiry has been listening to the impact on women from 13 pregnancy, baby and parent organisations. We hear from our correspondent who has been following it, Jim Reid, and from Jenny Ward, the CEO of the Lullaby Trust, who gave evidence on behalf of all the organisations. And we talk to Daisie Lane who tells us of her own experience and her book chronicling 150 other women's experiences.Bestselling author Sophie Kinsella, known for the hugely popular Shopaholic series and many other bestsellers, has sold over 45 million books which have been translated into more than 40 languages. The moderate success of Confessions of a Shopaholic gave PJ Hogan enough creative wiggle room to go bananas again on his next movie. MENTAL is a clear return to form from a filmmaker who has decided he doesn't care to be embraced by the mainstream. Sadly, critics and audiences were happy to oblige, and this final PJ Party sits with a rotten 44% Tomatometer score, despite reuniting him with Toni Collette. Critics may not have cared for PJ Hogan's fifth movie, but it made enough money to be considered another commercial success under his belt - and all he had to do was sell his soul? Listen to Alex & Julio debate if Hogan's uncompromising style may have been lost in whatever compromises he made while helming CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC. If the world was a fair place, the Shopaholic Cinematic Universe would be at least six movies deep by now - all helmed by PJ Hogan and starring Isla Fisher. As it is, however, we must be satisfied with Hogan's single adaptation of CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC, which was a decent box office hit but was buried by critics. DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR. DON'T BOTHER WATCHING THIS DRAMA. Judy and Linda are dumbfounded by "Miss Night and Day" (낮과 밤이 다른 그녀), the JTBC drama starring Jung EunJi, Lee JungEun and Choi JinHyuk. Since we have decided to abandon this nonsensical show, we will instead be starting "Lovely Runner" (선재 업고 튀어), starring Byeon WooSeok and Kim HyeYoon. Digressions: 1:09 - Listener E-mails! 10:29 - Linda has started "Lovely Runner" (선재 업고 튀어) and is now hooked! 12:34 - Judy watched "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" in the theatres and enjoyed it very much. 15:40 - We've misled you! "Road to Avonlea" is not all free on GazeboTV after all, sadly. There are still some free episodes, so you can still check those out! 16:47 - Judy finally finished watching "Fallout" on Amazon Prime, starring Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins and Aaron Moten. It was a stylish adaptation of a beloved video game series, and you should check it out. Apparently Judy is on an apocalypse kick. 20:21 - Judy and Linda finished watching the third season of "Bridgerton" and it was predictably boring. Who cares anymore about this conflict, you guys. 23:57 - Judy picked up Sophie Kinsella's "The Burnout" on a whim in a physical bookstore! Even if you're not a fan of the "Confessions of a Shopaholic" series, this is a nice light read. After a rocky childhood, Dana faced losing her Mother to cancer at the young age of 14. Despite getting kicked out by her Father and Stepmother at 16, Dana went on to graduate high school and attend college to pursue a career in nursing. Inspired by the nurses who took care of her Mother, she wanted to help others in such a time of need. Unfortunately, Dana's addictions caused her life to come crashing down and within months of losing her nursing job, she began taking lives instead of saving them. She targeted elderly women who lived alone mostly. She may have gotten away with it longer had it not been for one victim who survived. Dana made the mistake of attacking a woman who worked at an antique shop who was younger and stronger than the other victims. When detectives connected the crimes, it wasn't long before they identified her. Before we get to our callers, we talk about last week's caller… A lot of you wanted to know our thoughts, and some of you even wrote in! Our first caller had her engagement party spoiled by her “best friend,” who proceeded to bail on said party. She is afraid to confront her friend over this blunder and reconsider her as a bridesmaid. Our second caller got dumped over a spicy encounter she had over two years ago, long before they met. She struggles to acknowledge his hypocrisy and worries about sharing her history with future partners. Our final caller finds herself in a financial bind because of her “shopaholic” husband. Should she consider surrogacy to pay off her extreme debt? Or should she help her husband get to the root of his spending problem? “Stop having important conversations via text.” Start your 7 Day Free Trial of Viall Files + here: https://viallfiles.supportingcast.fm/ Please make sure to subscribe so you don't miss an episode and as always send in your relationship questions to asknick@theviallfiles.com to be a part of our Monday episodes. Right off the bat Cynthia and I get sidetracked by my grumpy mood. A mood I blamed on an instagram battle but probably more about my grief of having a senior who is actually going to college! There's some rehashing of the Bachelor, Heather's advice for renting with Turo and discussion whether audiobooks count as reading. We also get sidetracked talking about all of the end-of-school year emotions including Cynthia's current struggle over her first grader's learning and reading challenges. She claims her stage of life is somewhere between Kidzbop music and shapewear from Soma. Which makes us wonder how would you describe your current parenting stage? Regardless of which end of the spectrum you are on (or maybe you are in both seasons) this episode will give you encouragement that God cares for our kids more than we ever will and He has a good story for their lives. The team at Women in Money Cafe discuss their favourite films that involve money and the lessons that can be gleaned from them. Some films highlighted include 'The Big Short', which helps demystify the 2008 financial crisis; 'Rogue Trader', a true story that illustrates the importance of proper financial compliance; and 'Confessions of a Shopaholic', a lighter-heartened film portraying the drawbacks of overspending. They also analyse general themes like rags-to-riches narratives, use of money in films to induce certain emotions and the potential educational value of these films for children or those unfamiliar with complex financial constructs.00:00 Introduction 00:38 Introducing the Team and Their Favorite Money Movies01:34 Discussion on 'The Big Short'06:50 Insights on 'Rogue Trader'12:20 Exploring 'Confessions of a Shopaholic'16:55 Reflecting on Money Themes in Movies25:37 Recommendation of 'Margin Call' and Closing ThoughtsThe Films:Big Short - NetflixMargin Call - AmazonRogue Trader - YouTubeConfessions of a Shopaholic - DisneyUp - DisneyTrading Places - AmazonYOUR HOSTJulie Flynn is an experienced independent financial adviser and financial coach. 快速幫你複習一下這集的主題句 & 單字: 買到剁手 pay an arm and a leg / give my left/right arm for…. A steal / a good deal花錢買爽(購物療法) retail therapy買到手軟為止 shop till you drop*Shop till you drop 是一個諺語,其中的 till 是 until (直到) 的縮寫,同時以 drop 表示 「手軟」或是「陣亡」的語意,所以結合起來的意思就是「買到手軟為止」,這句話也常常被拿來做廣告詞。後來它又有延伸的語意,表示「堅持做一件事直到不行為止」。 情境對話 Duncan:Hey, Connie, Double 11 day is approaching. Do you have any plans? 嘿~Connie,雙11快到了,你有計劃嗎? Connie:Of course! You know I'm a shopaholic, right? I'm already prepared to clear out my online shopping cart. 當然!你知道我是個購物狂吧?我已經準備好清空線上購物車了 Duncan:Me too, but I hope I don't overspend. What do you want to buy? 我也是,但希望不要買太多。你想買什麼? Connie:Shoes, clothes, and makeup. 鞋子、衣服、化妝品。 Duncan:I'm mainly looking to get books, electronics, and some small home items. 我主要想買書、電子產品還有一些小家居用品。 Connie:I hope we can both snag some discounts.
Decluttering is hard work, but is made even harder if you keep bringing stuff into your home. Mary Simpson worked 50-80 hours a week and used shopping as a reward until a health scare in early 2020 changed her mindset about stuff and using shopping as entertainment. She realized that we only get one shot at this life, and it's not the stuff that matters. She and her family downsized and got rid of almost 75% of their belongings as they sought a simpler, more intentional life. On today's episode Mary is sharing her amazing story, as well as a four-step process to stop the shopping habit so that you can live more intentionally and prevent clutter before it starts! You can connect with Mary on Instagram where she shares inspirational tips and advice to those seeking a more minimal-ish life.
