What does safety really mean when you're trapped in an abusive relationship? For forty years, Genesis Women's Shelter & Support has been answering this question through action, evolving from a seven-room emergency shelter into a comprehensive support system that recognizes both physical and emotional dimensions of safety. In this revealing conversation, Genesis CEO Jan Langbein and Chief Residential Officer Jordyn Lawson take us through the history of domestic violence services in America—a journey that began long before shelter doors opened, tracing back to women's suffrage and the fight against laws that once permitted husbands to beat their wives legally. They share how Genesis has continuously adapted to meet survivor needs, from adding transitional housing to legal services to innovative occupational therapy for traumatized children. The most dangerous misconception about domestic violence? That victims are safe once they leave. In reality, 75% of women murdered by partners are killed after separation. This stark reality explains why "just leaving" isn't simple, especially when abusers use isolation, financial control, and threats as weapons. Lawson expertly dismantles our understanding of abuse, explaining how controlling behaviors combined with any physical aggression represent the highest risk for homicide, while strangulation increases murder risk elevenfold.Perhaps most importantly, Langbein and Lawson offer practical guidance for everyone who suspects someone might be suffering. "Trust your gut," they urge, explaining that even when victims deny abuse initially, simply knowing someone cares enough to ask can become a lifeline. Whether you're concerned about someone you know or working in a position to help survivors, this episode provides the knowledge to recognize warning signs that media sensationalism often obscures.Ready to be part of the solution? Genesis offers 24/7 support at 214-946-HELP. Because as this episode reminds us: abuse won't stop until abusers stop abusing—but we can all help create pathways to safety.
First, finishing chapter 9: If a non-kohen served in the Temple, that would be punishable by death "in the hands of heaven." But that opinion seems to be contradicted by the very sages who said it to begin with. Why so? The Gemara resolves the question. Next, beginning chapter 10, starting with a new mishnah: Those who are sentenced to death by strangulation. Note, again, the special status of the daughter of the kohen. Plus, the sources for these violations leading to this particular execution. Including the death sentence for hitting a person -- specifically in the event of a wound. Plus, a new kind of linguistic comparison of applying details to a new case.

(MarkCoffeyPhoto / Getty Images)Idaho Matters will be talking about domestic violence and sexual assault, and some of what we'll be talking about is hard to listen to. Listener discretion advised. When police respond to a 911 call of domestic violence, they may find someone who has been slapped, punched, or kicked by their partner, and officers and doctors can see very clear physical evidence of the assault. But there's one form of violence that's hard to spot and hard to prove, and it's often a precursor to domestic homicide.Choking or strangling someone often leaves little visible evidence, and if officials aren't trained to look for the signs, the victim may end up back at the mercy of their abuser. Research shows that someone who survives being strangled once is 750% more likely to be murdered by the same person. The city of Nampa is trying to change that statistic and recently held training for police, doctors, prosecutors and survivors to stop this cycle of violence.Jeannie Strohmeyer, the executive director of the Nampa Family Justice Center, joined Idaho Matters to talk more.If you or someone you know is a victim of abuse, call (208) 475-5700 or visit the Nampa Family Justice Center.

IRON WAS AN UNINTENDED RESULT OF TRADE STRANGULATION: 6/8: After 1177 B.C.: The Survival of Civilizations by Eric H. Cline (Author) https://www.amazon.ca/After-1177-B-C-Survival-Civilizations/dp/0691192138 At the end of the acclaimed history 1177 B.C., many of the Late Bronze Age civilizations of the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean lay in ruins, undone by invasion, revolt, natural disasters, famine, and the demise of international trade. An interconnected world that had boasted major empires and societies, relative peace, robust commerce, and monumental architecture was lost and the so-called First Dark Age had begun. Now, in After 1177 B.C., Eric Cline tells the compelling story of what happened next, over four centuries, across the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean world. It is a story of resilience, transformation, and success, as well as failures, in an age of chaos and reconfiguration. 1645 TROY

Wade Wilson, infamously dubbed the "Deadpool Killer," was sentenced to death on Tuesday for the gruesome 2019 murders of two Florida women, crimes the prosecution described as "killing for the sake of killing." Wilson, 30, remained emotionless as Circuit Judge Nicholas Thompson delivered the capital sentence, highlighting the particularly heinous nature of the crimes. “The evidence shows the murders were heinous, atrocious, and cruel, and that the second murder was cold, calculated, and premeditated,” Judge Thompson stated. Wilson was found guilty in June for the October 2019 murders of Kristine Melton, 35, and Diane Ruiz, 43. The jury unanimously recommended the death penalty, a decision the judge upheld without hesitation, noting there was “no basis” to overrule it. Prosecutors revealed that Wilson strangled Melton in her home after a drug-fueled sexual encounter. He then stole her car and, in a chilling sequence of events, used her phone to call his girlfriend, whom he assaulted. Rebuffed by her refusal to join him, Wilson then encountered Ruiz, luring her into the car under the guise of helping her. He later admitted to strangling her before running her over multiple times, leaving her body unrecognizable. “This case was about killing for the sake of the killing,” Assistant State Attorney Andreas Gardiner emphasized during the trial. “Strangulation is the epitome of life slipping through someone's hands.” Despite the horror of his crimes, Wilson became a macabre figure of fascination, receiving thousands of letters, including explicit photos, from admirers during his five years in prison. Many supporters, including misguided women, wrote to Judge Thompson, imploring him to spare Wilson's life, citing his troubled past and mental health struggles. Wilson's defense argued that he suffered from brain damage due to drug addiction and abandonment issues, having been given up for adoption by his biological parents. His adoptive parents also pleaded with the court to spare his life, asserting that “the human is still in there.” In addition to the murder charges, Wilson was also convicted of grand theft, burglary, battery, and petit theft. During Tuesday's sentencing, Circuit Judge Thompson inquired if there were any additional matters to address before concluding the case. Wilson's defense team then rose to make a final request. His attorney stated, “I recognize that Mr. Wilson has pending cases both here and elsewhere, but he has asked me to request that the court expedite his transfer to death row within your available authority.” In response to the request, Circuit Judge Thompson noted that Wilson's other cases would not be addressed until at least September 16. Consequently, a date for his execution remains undetermined due to these unresolved charges. State Attorney Amira Fox, who has been in the legal field for 34 years, described Wilson as "the most evil" person she had ever encountered. The public greeted the sentence with applause, and Kristine's cousin Samantha pledged to witness Wilson's execution. "This will not be the last time Wade Wilson sees us in a courtroom," she declared at a press conference. Diane Ruiz's father also expressed his intention to attend the execution, lamenting, "I didn't get to tell her I love her before she was taken from us so cruelly." On February 12, 1971 19-year-old Jesse McBane headed out to surprise his fiance, 20-year-old Patricia Mann. He was taking her to a Valentine's Dance in Durham, North Carolina. The two lovebirds had to be back at Patricia's dormitory by 1:00 AM curfew. Only …she never returned. Durham police officers found Jesse's Ford Cortina the next evening parked in a cul-de-sac. 12 days later, a land surveyor came upon what he thought was a mannequin's leg sticking out from a pile of leaves. When he poked the extremity with a stick …he saw skin move. It was the missing students. Details from the crime scene suggested the couple had been tortured and murdered by hanging. Word of the heinous crime shocked the Tarheel State. The next day's page 1 headline in the Durham Sun read: ‘Strangulation by Rope Killed Couple.” Over 50 years later, the double homicide remains North Carolina's most notorious unsolved murder. Tough, the case isn't without suspects. Follow Jami on Instagram & TikTok @JamiOnAir and join the Serial Streamers true crime TV club! First off, let's all agree that everyone has a different STYLE of sexual intimacy, and that's OK. Yep, we all understand that there's always been a lot of sexual act “diversity” in the world… and throughout history. But there is a more recent trend that has increased in popularity, some surveys attribute it to its representation in pornography, that may be dangerous. This was in recent print as of July 3, 2024! This is "sexual choking”. But this term is not accurate because it actually is a form of strangulation. The increase in practice is mostly seen in teenagers and young adults. In this episode, we will discuss a real-world scenario that one of our podcast family members asked me about just the other day. This OBGYN physician was on call and one of her patients, a 21-year-old, non-pregnant, otherwise healthy, and THIN (yes, that was a factor in this case, and we will discuss why) presented with LOC during sex whose partner stated “she had a seizure” during sex. But this was no ordinary seizure. She had no history of epilepsy and was not on any medications. The “seizure” happened after sexual choking. Sexual choking is a big concern as it exposes the brain to recurrent episodes of hypoxia. We now have data showing there are real negative effects from this activity. Plus, we need to discuss this as it may also be a normalization, inappropriately, of sexual violence. In this episode, we will take a look at this alarming data and discuss why we need to ask about these sexual practices in a compassionate, empathic, and open way.
