Daniel's been building robots for 20 years. He's sold 100s of AI robots-as-a-service to Walmart, FedEx, & DHL amongst others. Last month, he raised a $40M round.6 years ago, he realized why robots weren't getting massively adopted. Builders like him were trying to build perfect robots that always worked. But every situation has edge cases. What if you designed robots to work only 80% of the time and use humans for the other 20%?That one unique insight changed everything and was the reason he started Vecna. His robots can tell when they need help and ask humans to assist in real-time. Like most capital-intensive startups, Daniel played on hard-mode. Here's how he built hardware, robotics and AI, sold enterprise contracts, and grew to $10s of millions in revenue.TakeawaysWhy as a founder you need to trust your gut and stick to your convictions. How to be objective and create an accurate model of the world to predict the future and make informed decisions. How to bootstrap even a capital intensive company in roboticsKeywordsVecna Robotics, robotics, warehouse industry, automated forklifts, reliability, safety, customer adoption(00:00:00) Intro(00:02:05) The Beginning of Early Robotics(00:06:00) Edge Cases in Robotics(00:08:15) Robots Shouldn't be Perfect and AI Isn't Intelligent(00:14:05) Technology Empowers Humans(00:18:19) When Robots Need Help(00:21:29) The First Pilot and Customers(00:29:49) Covid Slowed Everything(00:33:52) Finding Product Market Fit(00:34:45)One Piece of AdviceSend me a message to let me know what you think!

The mass adoption of industrial robots has yet to take place. Automation has been supporting human efforts on manufacturing floors in warehouses for years. However, that shift is going to change by 2030 exponentially. The relationship between robots and humanity will get increasingly attractive as PwC estimates that 70% of global GDP growth by 2030 will come from what we could call the machine economy. Daniel Theobald is the CEO and Founder of Vecna Robotics. Daniel has decades of experience leading research scientists and teams of engineers in developing cutting-edge technology. He has 67 issued patents and more than 30 patents pending. Daniel has also been at the forefront of robotics for more than 20 years, working closely with DARPA, DOD, NASA, NIH, USDA, and others to advance the use of robots and AI software to improve warehouse automation. The journey will be incredibly complex for humanity and robotics, and it has sometimes been damaged by the way Hollywood portrays complex interactions in overly simple ways.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This is a first! It's the first time I've had the opportunity to interview both a founder and an investor in the same episode. I wasn't sure how it would go, but after conducting the interview, I think this might be an interesting format to consider moving forward. We obviously discussed all the details about Vecna Robotics, the autonomous mobile robot and workflow orchestration company, but it was really interesting to learn the story behind the investment. It was like a live version of those common “why we invested” blog posts the VC often write to detail their thought process behind their investment. As you'll hear, the background story of each person and how they got to where they are today really sets the stage for why I love doing this podcast. It would be hard to find other individuals who have more expertise in their respective fields and why this is a perfect match to hopefully build a massive company. In this episode of our podcast, we also cover: * What the future holds for mobile robots and autonomous vehicles. * The founding story of Vecna and why they spun out Vecna Robotics. * Use cases and why the market is ready for the solutions provided by Vecna Robotics, plus the company's growth plans ahead. * The details on Blackhorn Ventures and what Trevor is targeting for investments. * Common pitch mistakes entrepreneurs make while raising funding for robotics companies. * And so much more. If you like the show, please remember to subscribe and review us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Spotify, Stitcher, or Google Play.

Daniel Theobold, CEO of Vecna Robotics discusses how the industrial world has been increasing in automation for years– and how COVID-19 has accelerated that.
We constantly hear that technology is killing opportunities in the workplace. But reports by the World Economic Forum and Deloitte have shown that automation is creating — and will continue to create — millions of jobs in fields like sales, IT services, and big data. But to really know how tech is affecting our lives, experts like Daniel Theobald and Melissa Flagg say we need to focus less on the 30,000-foot view of the industry and more on what is going on at the ground level. We talk to Theobald, Vecna Robotics’ co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer as well as Flagg, the Northeast regional lead at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, about how we should be taking a ground-up approach to America’s technological development.
Can Sustainability and Finance go together? Listen to what our experts Michael Hauer and Daniel Theobald have to say on the future of this unlikely pair.

Feeback line: 317-214-0504 Robots have long been integrated into the manufacturing industry to improve efficiency, reduce error, streamline workflows, and increase safety. Robots work tirelessly and don't create non value-added time and interruptions. Can they be adapted to do for the healthcare industry what they have done for the manufacturing industry? In part two of our interview with Vecna founder and CTO, Daniel Theobald, we discuss the exitsing and potential roles of robots in the healthcare setting; more specifically, directly inside the clinical space. Intelligent, highly manueverable, totally independent robots can do great service as well as transform into a colleague. www.vecna.com
