The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

We have many images of negotiation thanks to the media.  It could be movie scenes of tough negotiators or reports on political negotiations with lunatic led rogue states.  Most of these representations however have very little relevance in the real world of business.  A lot of the work done on negotiations focuses on “tactics”.  This is completely understandable for any transactional based negotiations.  Those are usually one off deals, where there is no great likelihood of any on-going relationship continuing between buyer and seller. This is false flag.  The aim of sales is not a sale.  The aim is repeat orders.  If you want to be permanently in 100% prospecting mode, then transactional selling is fine.  That gets tiring and is tough, as you have to spend all of your time hunting because you can't farm.  Now there will be some cases with buyers, where that is how it rolls and there is not much you can do about it.  The majority of salespeople though are trying to strike up a lifetime relationship with the buyer, so that the orders keep coming rain, hail or shine. The style of negotiations for this business play are completely different to the one-off, transactional occasion.  In this world “tactics” are only partially relevant.  Going one up on the buyer, getting the better of them, isn't sustainable in a continuing relationship.  They remember what you did to them and they definitely don't like it. They either dump you completely as the supplier or they even it up down the road.  They don't forget and they don't forgive. Technique has a role, in the sense that there are certain best practices in negotiating, which we should observe.  The philosophical starting point though is key.  What are we trying to do here, what is our purpose?  Are we trying to build an on-going business relationship where we become the favoured supplier or are we after a one–off smash and grab deal?  If you highly evaluate the lifetime value of the customer and this is your main consideration, then you will have a lot of commitment to win-win outcomes. The consideration of the communication style of the buyer is another important negotiating consideration.  How we communicate with the buyer will vary, that is, if we know what we are doing.  Clueless salespeople will have one default mode – the way they personally like to communicate and that is all they have in their tool box.  Professionals understand that if the buyer is micro focused, we go with them on facts, detail, evidence, testimonials, proof etc.  If they are the opposite, then we talk big picture and don't get bogged down in the smaller details.  We describe what future success looks like.  If they are conservative, self-contained and skeptical, we drop the energy level to match theirs.  We don't force the pace, we spend time having a cup of tea to build the trust in the relationship.  We mirror what they like.  If the buyer is a “time is money” hard driving, take no prisoners type, then we don't beat around the bush.  We get straight down to business.  In rapid fire, we lay out the three key reasons they should buy, we get their order and then get out of their office pronto. With this analysis in mind, we prepare for the negotiation by analyzing the buyer's perspective.  We use what we know about them and their situation to build up a picture of what they will need from the deal we are negotiating.  We match that with what we can provide and we amplify the value we bring to the equation.  We now set out our BATNA – our “best alternative to a negotiated agreement”.  This is our walk away position.  We have analysed the potential of this client, by looking at their lifetime value as a buyer.  This can have a big impact on how we see the pricing.  When negotiating with a big multi-national buyer, I had to take a painful hit on my pricing.  I only agreed to this though, because the volume in the first year was very substantial and the understanding was that this would be repeated annually.  Now, it may not become annual, who knows, but if it does, then this is a major feast of guaranteed farming that allows a better balance to all the other hunting required.  In another case, I “fired” the buyer because their pricing requirement was too low. There was no prospect of any on-going business and the volume was not attractive.  When you believe you bring value, you enjoy inner confidence in your pricing.  We all have our positioning in the market. If we want to maintain that, then we have to be prepared to reject low ball offers that damage our position and our brand.  Hopefully you don't have to do this too often, because you can convince other buyers to pay the full tariff. In most cases, sales negotiating requires a holistic approach, rather than a “mechanical” tactics driven approach.  Decide what type of relationship you want with the buyer.  If it is win-win, then we are looking at trade offs for pricing against volume and repeat business.  Leave all that tricky dicky negotiating palaver to the fantasy world of Hollywood movie scripts.  Let's negotiate in the real world.

Economics 101 for Real World Business AZ TRT S04 EP48 (211) 12-3-2023   What We Learned This Week: Supply & Demand - Economics Simplified Capital Allocation - What is the Opportunity of your Business Investment? Gamblers Fallacy - What is the Probability of the Next Die Roll? Game Theory - Dr. Nash's Plan to Pickup Women     Notes: EK 101 – Economics Lessons     Seg. 1 Supply & Demand Supply is the amount of a specific good or service that's available in the market. Demand is the amount of the good or service that customers want to buy. Supply and demand are both influenced by the price of goods and services. If there was only one pizza restaurant in a town and then a new pizza place opened, the demand for pizza from the first restaurant would drop. The price of gasoline often changes with the demand throughout the year. As people drive more in the summer, gasoline prices tend to rise. In professional football, owners sell entertainment (supply) and spectators buy the opportunity to view or display the game (demand). Meanwhile, owners also buy the services of athletes who wish to play (demand) and trained athletes make themselves available for a price (supply).   Marginal Utility What Is Marginal Utility? Marginal utility is the added satisfaction that a consumer gets from having one more unit of a good or service. The concept of marginal utility is used by economists to determine how much of an item consumers are willing to purchase. Sports David Beckham signed $250 mil contract in 2007 w LA Galaxy Galaxy willing to overpay to get the attention, ticket and merchandize sales What we will pay at the margin? There is only 1 Beckham, rare commodity, like a diamond – subjective on the value What is the value of a bottle of water in the desert?  If only 1, then pay a lot, if there are 50 available, then pay less     Seg. 2 Capital Allocation – Capital Allocation is the process of distributing financial resources to different areas of a business to increase efficiency and maximize profits.   A Sunk Cost refers to money that has already been spent and which cannot be recovered. In business, the axiom that one has to “spend money to make money” is reflected in the phenomenon of the sunk cost. A sunk cost differs from future (or regular) costs that a business may face, such as decisions about inventory purchase costs or product pricing.    Sunk Costs also mean that the Money $ used on a bad investment is lost. Don't try to ‘chase it' to somehow recover and get even. Instead, just write it off, and move on.  It is better to use the New Money $ on better investments. Where to Invest your money $ is pivital to Capital Allocation. Simply put, learn to Control Your Capital and decide wisely what Opportunity (Cost)  it should go to be as efficient as possible. This is the intersection of scarcity and choice.   Opportunity Cost is the loss or gain of making a decision, the forgone benefit that would have been derived by an option not chosen. To properly evaluate opportunity costs, the costs and benefits of every option available must be considered and weighed against the others. Famous Phrase – “idle cash balances represent an opportunity cost in terms of lost interest”   Whether your time or money can be better spent on something else   Should you mow your own lawn, or hire someone and concentrate on your job to make more $   Division of Labor We do not cut our own hair, or drill our own teeth – we go to a dental specialist, saves time & $ over long term Concentrate on your specialties Pencil example – one co make wood, one makes eraser, one mines the graphite, and one co assemblies – we all benefit as it would be harder and cost more if same company did it all, suppliers w/ specialty help keep costs down     In Stock Investing – Beware the Zombie Co.s in the S&P Index.   These are companies that are not profitable, or growing (may even need a Bailout). They are just treading water, and paying their interest on debt, but not their principal. In the current S&P index, it is estimated that about 20% of companies are Zombie Co's whose main investment comes from people buying the whole Index.   Unfortunately another 30% of the Index are bad companies that are either are stagnant, or on their way to Zombie status. Maybe 10 – 15% of the Companies (Stocks) in the Index (50 – 75 Co's) are really good to exceptional and should get your Capital.    Do you want to own the best house on the block? Or all of them?         Seg. 3   Gamblers Fallacy each roll of the die is separate from the last, no effect   The gambler's fallacy, also known as the Monte Carlo fallacy, occurs when an individual erroneously believes that a certain random event is less likely or more likely to happen based on the outcome of a previous event or series of events.   For example, the gambler's fallacy might cause someone to believe that if a coin just landed on heads twice in a row, then it's “due” to land on tails on the next toss.     Monte Carlo Simulation – use for modeling scenarios   One simple example of a Monte Carlo Simulation is to consider calculating the probability of rolling two standard dice. There are 36 combinations of dice rolls. Based on this, you can manually compute the probability of a particular outcome.   Monte Carlo Simulation is a mathematical method for calculating the odds of multiple possible outcomes occurring in an uncertain process through repeated random sampling. This computational algorithm makes assessing risks associated with a particular process convenient, thereby enabling better decision-making.   Probabilities   Probability is simply how likely something is to happen. Whenever we're unsure about the outcome of an event, we can talk about the probabilities of certain outcomes—how likely they are. The analysis of events governed by probability is called statistics.   Sports analytics is a more recent field that uses data to measure areas like athletic performance and business health to optimize the processes and success of a sports organization as a whole. On-field data metrics help teams decide how to improve in-game strategies, nutrition plans and other methods for raising their athletes' level of performance. Off the field, organizations can leverage data to monitor ticket sales, craft marketing campaigns and reduce operational costs.   Data lets teams and organizations track performance, make predictions and make smarter decisions on the field. Want to figure out what play is best to run on fourth down in a football game? Check the analytics. Wondering whether or not your pitcher should throw another inning? Check the analytics. Players still win games, but data allows coaches to put them in the best position to succeed.       Seg. 4 Game Theory – science of human strategy, people behave differently in games Dr. Nash – A Beautiful Mind If they all go for the same girl in the bar, competition and no one gets her, but if they work together and pair off with the group of girls, they all may win As Nash explains it, if all the men approach the blonde first, none of the men will pair off: The blonde will reject them all as a crowd, and her brunette friends will reject them all individually because none of the women will accept being second choice to her friend. While used in several disciplines, game theory is most notably used as a tool within the study of business and economics. The "games" may involve how two competitor firms will react to price cuts by the other, whether a firm should acquire another, or how traders in a stock market may react to price changes.   Prisoners Dilemma The prisoner's dilemma presents a situation where two parties, separated and unable to communicate, must each choose between cooperating with the other or not. The highest reward for each party occurs when both parties choose to co-operate. Keep your mouth shut and tell the cops nothing, both walk   Cold War Example If both combatants do nothing, everyone lives, or mutual destruction with nuclear war War Games movie – no winner in hundreds of simulated games     Business Topic: HERE   Investing Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/investing More - BRT Best of: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Best+Of   Thanks for Listening. His article is entitled:  The Revolution of AI in Coaching ~There's nothing artificial about it.Using a chatbot or other artificial intelligence source, a coach offers a client benefits that would not be possible without technology. Large language models – like the core algorithm behind ChatGPT and GPT-4 – offer statistically plausible suggestions or conversational prompts that frame a coaching conversation.Coaches might use these tools to prepare for a coaching session by developing a list of potential questions or evaluating their word choices afterward. Automating coach-client interaction between sessions may build accountability, and a results focus. Enter the term “coach augmentation.”Current research shows that chat-based coaching tools are already delivering meaningful client results. In this podcast, we will discuss how coaches can use AI to augment their coaching and help facilitate more light bulb moments for the client. The effects of the shift to hybrid workEnabled by new technologies and informed by the experiences during COVID pandemic, many employees would like to continue working remotely. Many companies, on the contrary, would like to see their employees back to the office. In this context, hybrid work is often proposed as a solution that meets the interests of both employees and employers and captures the benefits of both remote and in-office work. But is it indeed “the best of both worlds”?In this talk, Dr. Andreeva (Maynooth University School of Business) will discuss her ongoing research on the effects of the mass-scale shift to hybrid work. For example, what happens in a team, when some of your team members work mostly from the office, while others work mostly from home? How do work arrangements of the employees – in the office, hybrid or remote - influence their experiences at work and their performance? How do organisations manage the shift to hybrid work? The talk will explore the emerging evidence on these issues and discuss implications for individual employees and organisations. The SpeakerDr. Tatiana Andreeva is an Associate Professor in Management and Organisational Behavior and Research Director at the School of Business, Maynooth University, Ireland. Her ongoing research projects explore how the shift to remote and hybrid work influences knowledge sharing and collaboration in organisations – what challenges companies face and how to address them. Tatiana's work has been published in leading international academic journals such as Human Resource Management Journal, Human Resource Management and Journal of World Business, amongst others, as well as in the business media outlets. Prior to joining academia, Tatiana worked in management consulting and in HR.Her notes are here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1E5UACsLfviml2Zx92ohqs6d-3M9cZ-mw/view?usp=share_link Find us here: www.agileleanireland.org

Brain for Business
Series 2, Episode 15 - How can new managers develop a “leadership mindset”?, with Professor Bret Crane, Utah State University

Brain for Business

The transition from individual contributor to manager is never easy. New managers need to take responsibility not just for their own performance, but also for that of team. They need to place less emphasis on doing, and much more on the essential skills of leading, influencing and communicating. Core to this is the development of a “leadership mindset”. But what is a leadership mindset? And what steps can managers and their organisations take to better develop the right mindset and perspectives for leadership? To discuss this I am delighted to be joined on the Brain for Business podcast by Professor Bret Crane. Bret Crane is an Associate Professor of Leadership at the Jon. M. Huntsman School of Business and the Executive Director of the Stephen R. Covey Leadership Center at Utah State University. Bret's research focuses on leadership mindsets. As a respected authority and researcher on topics related to leadership, management, and organizational behavior, Bret has published articles across a variety of journals including Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of World Business, Business & Society, and Human Resource Development Review. Before joining the faculty at the Huntsman School of Business, he was a Visiting Professor at the George Washington School of Business in Washington DC. As a consultant, Bret works with organizations to improve their leadership, teams, organizations, and culture. His clients have included American Express, Honda, Lowe's, General Mills, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Biogen, USAA, and others. He is exercising his right of free speech, please do your own research on any controversial claims made in this episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS  If you start to look at control in society, you quickly realise that society is controlled by money. By those who have it and those who do not, the more choices you can make the more freedom you can have what dictates choice more than anything, is money. The ‘boom-bust' cycle is a long exchange of exchanging ‘fake' money e.g credit for ‘real' money e.g assets: this creates an unbalanced control in favour of the banks and the 1% Human empathy is an emotional consequence to what you're doing. Psychopaths do not have this and these are the types of people that are in control of the wealth and money system. They know how and why to manipulate others. If the few want to continue to have control over the many, then they need to centralise decisions. This is how globalisation has finally been formed and how the few exercise control in every area of our lives, including financial institutions. Covid has been a period of two years in which centralisation and manipulation has happened even faster, particularly around the decline of cash use. The world is run by ‘cartel' companies such as amazon and Facebook, they dictate a lot of what happens and stop any genuine capitalist companies from competing with them. The big corporations such as Facebook and Amazon have actually benefitted from the Covid lockdowns, whilst medium and small independent companies and individuals have suffered. If you know the outcome and goal of something then you understand the journey. If we understand what the end goal is for these people exerting control then we understand how what is happening right now ties into the bigger picture. David has thought throughout the pandemic that COVID is a scam, he is noticing now that more and more people are realising the same. There are many individuals that now believe that the pandemic wasn't about health but instead about control. BEST MOMENTS   “It's accumulation of control by the weapon that is money” “Globalisation is the centralisation of power in every area of our lives…simply the ongoing centralisation of power” “Who has benefitted in lockdown? Amazon and Facebook” “Furlough…buying silence and buying time for more and more businesses to be destroyed” “The many give their power to the few in the form of acquiescence” “It's an agenda way beyond health” [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors] VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter   https://robmoore.com/podbooks  rob.team ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. First on the programme - we look at how as parts of the globe are abandoning restrictions, areas of China are back in lockdown in the face of rising case numbers. It's affecting the north-eastern region of Jilin, and also the southern city of Shenzhen, which is a key manufacturing centre. Andy Xie is in independent economist based in Shanghai. He explained what was happening. Next - the relationship between the Russian and Chinese leaders is exceptionally close, but if China were to assist Russia more directly, what would the consequences be on the global stage? Edward White is China Correspondent for the Financial Times talks us through the current tensions between The West and China. We then spoke to our regular analyst, Michael Hughes, and we addressed the widely circulating theory that - economically - we've returned to a previous age. We then hear from Ann Soy of The BBC's Focus on Africa programme discussing food shortages in Africa as a consequence of the Ukraine crises with the United States Ambassador the UN, Linda Thomas Greenfield. Lastly, for weeks now on World Business Report we've been looking at the Ukraine conflict, western sanctions on Russia and the effects on the economy there. There's a real danger of talking about high level political discussions and quoting a lot of big numbers, but losing track of how this actually affects ordinary people in the country. In this edition of The World Business report we spoke to two online bloggers, who make videos explaining Russian life to the rest of the world. Producer: Gabriele Shaw | Presenter: David Harper

Today's guest on The Happy Head Podcast is Alison Arnoff. A former Division 1 swimmer and retired triathlete with a 30-year record of success helping giants like Intel and EMC plus seven start-ups resulting in six exits, Alison empowers Executives, Leaders, and Aspiring Leaders to "Dare 2 Be" Peak Performers. Always a trailblazer, Alison received her Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering at a time when women with those degrees were rare. She started her career as an engineer before moving to sales, marketing, management, and leadership. Competitive swimming at an elite level taught Alison that real growth happens by pushing outside your comfort zone; a principle she applied throughout her career and now with her clients. Supporting individuals to achieve their Personal Best is simply what she does best. During her corporate career, Alison mastered the challenge of customer adoption of emerging technologies, creating product roadmaps, building and closing large complex 7-figure deals, and leading effective teams. The core principle underneath her success and the success of her teams was confident and effective communication and empathetic leadership. Alison has been an analyst for a Venture Capital firm doing her best shark tank impression as well as consulting tech companies in their sales and marketing strategy. Alison is a facilitator for the World Business and Executive Coaching Summit, an Advisory Board member of several tech companies, and advises several start-up accelerators. Paul has dedicated the last 29 years to helping people, either as The Emergency Response Manager at the Channel Tunnel and the Mindset Maestro for business owners. In 2019 Paul partnered with Lisa Johnson - creator of “Passion for Passive” an owner of the massively successful “GSD” Facebook group - to help her clients with a wide variety of mindset issues. Paul has turned his lifelong interest in the mind and human behaviour into his new career helping people remove unwanted mental baggage and to step out of their own way. Trained in the radically different hypnosis without trance method “The Control System” created by Tim Box, Paul has studied more traditional methods including those of Milton Erickson, Dr Jonathan Royle, Jonathan Chase, Richard Bandler and Scott Jansen. He also attended Tony Robbins’ “Unleash the Power Within” Weekend and walked on hot coals. In preparation for his new venture, Paul spent much of 2018 training and learning new skills. One of the highlights was Logan Murray's Stand Up Comedy course, during which he performed two live stand up gigs. The “graduation” gig held at The Water Rats, North London, where Oasis played their first concert in the capital. Paul has plenty of testimonials that showcase how he has helped clients. His favourite is probably the shorted and most direct.
