The easy Automation Solution is Hard “The right solution that works all the time for anybody”  is HARD Scot Lindemann, CEO of Mission Design & Automation, has 30+ years of leadership in Automation and Robotics. Formerly of JR Automation where he served for many years in various leadership roles and was instrumental in helping them achieve record growth until he left in 2016 as its co-CEO. Scot then took the role of President of BACA Systems, a stone robotics fabrication equipment provider in southeast Michigan, from 2017-2020. Scot has a passion for intelligent automation and robotics, leadership development and customer service. A Lake Superior State University (LSSU) graduate in Robotic Systems Engineering, Scot Lindemann has served the automation and robotics industry for over three decades. Beyond his time working on the industrial automation integrator front, he has also been active in FIRST Robotics and has been a member of and served as a Director for the Association for Advancing Automation. Scot is also one of a limited number of recipients of FANUC's President's Circle award. Scot has also served on the LSSU board of Directors as well as served as a Board Member and as Chairman of the Board for Lakeshore Advantage, a West Michigan nonprofit economic development organization. Scot, joins me for podcast #88 and we have a conversation about ease of use in the robotics and automation industry. Scot, welcome to the podcast, Let's talk about automation and especially what is getting easier? But Scot, as easy as it is, we know that it really is getting more complex… Do you feel that the industry or the media is talking too much about simplicity and maybe not enough about preparation, training, talent, timelines? Scot, what other things are making it harder? Are parts and part families, part feeding, getting harder? Is Budgeting (for automation, maintenance) is getting more complex? Do you find the conversation between OT and IT becoming simpler or harder, or is it even happening? Are you dealing with clients around Cybersecurity, or is this one more complexity? Thanks for coming onto the podcast, What do you like to do when you are not building automation? How can people get a hold of you? She has worked in Tier 1 Automotive industry where she met her now new boss, Peter Botros. Alessia, welcome to the podcast, thanks for joining us. Here are some of my interview questions: Was there an influence in your life that led you to engineering? Were you just good at all the STEM subjects? Did your co-op experiences help you define your interests more clearly or help you figure out what you DIDN'T want to do? So how does being a Project Manager differ from other engineering jobs you've held in past? As a woman in male-dominated profession and workplace, can you talk about some of the challenges you may have had? What advice would you have for young women considering entering engineering? Manufacturing? What about ETHOS made you want to work there? When you are not saving the world what do you like to do? How can people get a hold of you? Calvin was also recently on a webinar with Manufacturing Automation magazine's editor Sukanya Ray Ghosh on the Future of Automation Virtual Event 2022, and I was involved as well. Here are some of the questions that we talked about for podcast #83: Can you describe the types of automation that you are building? Are there any specific tools or technologies that you are seeing now, that maybe you weren't a few years ago? Machine vision? What kind of trends are you seeing in automation for welding? Are parts getting bigger or smaller? Are projects getting simpler or more complex? What about industry 4.0 and maybe iiot in the machines that you are building? A question about robots, etc. Bigger, more of them, etc. Do customers need more help, more training? My guest today is Liz Stortstrom from Hewlett Packard. Liz Stortstrom is a 3D Printing Application Engineer with expertise in using HP's Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) Technology for industrial applications. She has a background in Mechanical Design and joined HP to support the development of the JF500 series. She now utilizes that experience to find optimal solutions for customers aiming to push their businesses to the next level with additive manufacturing. Liz received her BS & MS in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and currently resides in Portland, OR. I first met Derek from HP at the ATX Anaheim show a few years ago, pre-COVID and was really impressed with the robot End of Arm Tools that they had on display. For this installment on #TheRobotIndustryPodcast we are going to talk about 3D printed End of Arm tools and the efficacy of using printed tools as robot end effectors, where they fit and how integrators and robot designers can get started. Here are some of the questions that we will discuss on the pod: 3D printing has come a long way in the past few years, I remember seeing all kinds of early EOATs, what has happened along the way? Improvements? From a high level, what are some of the big advantages for 3d printed eoats? Are there particular industries that might be better suited to 3D EOATs, packaging? Geographies? What are people picking up with 3d printed EOATs from HPs perspective.Do you have some USE cases that you can talk about? What are some of the challenges? Thin walled designs? Leaking in the air lines? Educating mechanical designers? Supply chain professionals, etc. Printing in color, can you tell where this can be an advantage? When do I buy a printer vs using a service bureau? If you would like to get in touch with Liz you can find her here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lizstortstrom/ or if you have a 3D or additive application, https://hp.pathfactory.com/us-en-3dprint-industrial-robotics-eoat Thanks to our Liz, and our partners, A3 The Association for Advancing Automation, PaintedRobot.com and our sponsor, Ehrhardt Automation Systems.
