#553 Penis Seam - Rich has come up with a scheme where all his listeners can live in central London and make money - or one of us gets £20 million. His guest is Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner Amy Gledhill. It starts out pretty gross and doesn't get much better, as Rich removes some clothes and part of his body (be glad it's audio only). They chat about how winning the award wasn't the immediate celebration/elevation that you might expect, all the amazing comedians who have never been nominated (mainly Rich, but how he came close), working with Dave Spikey on the fantastic Alma's Not Normal and getting very drunk with Sophie Willan, the terrific podcast Single Ladies In Your Area and why women need a show about dating going wrong, but maybe men need their own version too and how Richard became a master of dating (largely because of the low bar set by other men).To see Rich on tour head here http://richardherring.com/ballback/tourCome and see RHLSTP live http://richardherring.com/rhlstpSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Part 2 of our breakdown of Phoenix Nights as we continue to struggle with the urge to quote every single line. We do love it so but we take time to look at the further careers of writers Dave Spikey and Neil Fitzmaurice as well as asking the question: Peter Kay - git?
Biography Steve is an actor, writer, comedian, juggler, a "Gillard award" winning presenter on BBC Radio Lancashire and now a finalist on ITV's Britain's Got Talent 2020. Steve most recently completed his 17th consecutive pantomime at The Grand Theatre, Blackpool (and his 22nd Pantomime in total) and was also made an honourary member of The Friends Of The Grand in 2016 for his services to the theatre. Last year he starred, to critical acclaim, in the World premier tour of "Naturally Insane: The Life of Dan Leno" and is taking the show to the West End (Criterion Theatre). In 2015 he performed 16 nights at The Manchester Arena as part of the "Phoenix Nights Live" show, helping raise well over £ 5 million in the process. He also appeared at the London Palladium twice within a month later that year when he performed as part of the TV show "Sunday Night At The Palladium" and as warm-up for "One Night With Neil Diamond". He spent many years as "Special Guest" on Dave Spikey's Tours and has supported several other top comedic names including Peter Kay, Mick Miller, Roy Walker and The Lancashire Hotpots! He was also the first comic, ever, to act as "Warm-up" for The Royal Variety Show featuring Take That, Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow and Meatloaf. He is a regular Television "warm-up" for programs such as "The Rob Brydon Show", "A Question Of Sport", "Mastermind" and even survived over 150 episodes of "The Price is Right" with Joe Pasquale a few years ago. Steve's first love, however, is Stand-Up and it is a job that has taken him all over the world: Cruises in the Med, Norwegian Fjords and the Caribbean, hotels and comedy clubs in Hong Kong, Dubai, Crete, Cyprus, Turkey and Japan. He is a regular headline act at The Comedy Store and other "alternative" venues and has several television appearances to his credit. "Phoenix Nights", "Max And Paddy's Road To Nowhere", "Peter Kay's Britain's Got The Pop Factor...", "Stand-up Britain", "Give Your Mate A Break", "The Afternoon Show", "Talk Of The North", a "Real Radio" advert, straight acting roles in "The Things You Do For Love" and "Magnolia", and despite being one of the North West's healthiest males, a medical insurance commercial for "Medicash". He was also featured on the Granada Programme "Behind The Scenes" and "That's Entertainment" (with Cannon and Ball) and was voted "Entertainer of the Year" at the inaugural Red Rose Awards. For over 12 years Steve could be found in the guise of "Mad Edgar" the court jester at Camelot theme park where he presented over 2000 "Crazy Juggling Shows". For years, the father-of-three has been encouraged by family and friends to audition for Britain's Got Talent, but didn't expect to get far. However in August 2020, Steve became the first act sent through to the final, impressing judges with his comedy juggling routines. For 51-year-old Steve, this is the latest journey in a rich history in the world of entertainment. Steve previously charmed the judges in the audition round, with his impressive juggling skills, using his mouth to juggle ping-pong balls before juggling three guitars. His semi final performance was a huge change for Steve, who is used to feeding off an audiences live reaction - the show had to be pre-recorded this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, and social distancing, and saw Steve perform to a huge Zoom wall of viewers, as well as the shows judges. The judges unanimously chose to send him through. As Ant and Dec confirmed the news, Steve said it was "crazy and unbelievable" that he had made it through, although he left the entire panel in stitches. The grand final took place in October 2020 and Steve was placed third overall. Which was a wonderful conclusion to an amazing run on the show. And Steve is looking forward to seeing you on tour next year. So watch this space.

For the final episode of this series of The Lonely Arts Club, Martin McQuillan is joined by Neil Fitzmaurice. Neil is an actor, comedian and writer and is best known for his appearances in Peep Show and Phoenix Nights, which he also co-wrote alongside Peter Kay and Dave Spikey. The Liverpool suburb of Anfield -" just a stone's throw from the football ground" - is where Neil spent his youth and he was only a youngster when he had his first taste of performing. Enjoying the buzz that he got from being onstage, Neil knew it was something he wanted to pursue. Going from one success to another, Neil soon became a big name in the world of stand-up comedy and collaborated with like-minded peers such as Peter Kay. Forming a writing trio, Neil, Peter and Dave came up with some cracking work, and it wasn't long before the idea for Phoenix Nights was born. We chat to Neil about the crossover between being a comedian, an actor and a writer and the challenges that all three elements can bring. As the only actor to appear in Phoenix Nights, Peep Show and The Office, we hear what life was like for Neil as his career took off and what advice he has for aspiring actors, writers and comedians.

This week I visited the market ale house in Leyland (Lancashire) to have a chat with Jack about what it's like to run a micro pub. This included a liquid lunch that Jack kindly treated me to (get yourself a pilsner in there and you won't regret it) and escalated to rambling about a wide range of different things (a proper pub chat).Topics included what it's like to be in the pub industry, the differences, between a micro pub and a normal pub (there's not much too it believe it or not), drinking culture in the UK, pickled eggs (yes you read that right) and the time I bottled it when serving comedian Dave Spikey. If you enjoyed this podcast then please hit the subscribe button and give it a 5 star review and if you want to watch the visual version of the podcast then hit the link below! https://youtu.be/PbuVF6UG4Hk

This week Libby Purves is joined by Dr Kevin Jones, Vic Armstrong, Vidal Sassoon and Peter Jefferson. Dr Kevin Jones is an NHS Consultant in Acute Medicine at the Royal Bolton Hospital and is also a comedian. He features in a short film, 'Dying for a Laugh', along with stand-up comedians including Shappi Khorsandi, Ricky Tomlinson, and Dave Spikey, all reflecting (and joking) about the taboo subject of death. The film supports National Dying Matters Awareness Week which aims to get people talking more openly about end of life care and dying. Vic Armstrong is a British-born stuntman and director. He has worked in the movie industry for forty years, as stunt double for Indiana Jones, James Bond and Superman, and has directed action scenes for three James Bond movies, 'Mission Impossible 3' and 'I Am Legend', to name but a few. His autobiography, 'The True Adventures of The World's Greatest Stuntman' is published by Titan Books. Vidal Sassoon is known as the man who 'changed the world with a pair of scissors', with the Bauhaus-inspired hair styles he pioneered in the 1960s and his 'wash and wear' philosophy. His life story is a true rags to riches one, told in a new film Vidal Sassoon The Movie which traces his path from his early days in an orphanage in the East End, to his time as a soldier in Israel, his beginnings on Bond Street and ultimately to international success and celebrity. Peter Jefferson is a former BBC announcer who read the shipping forecast on Radio 4 for over forty years. He's now written a book detailing the history of this British institution and looking at its broader cultural influence. 'And Now the Shipping Forecast' is published by UIT Cambridge.
Libby Purves is joined by Vicki Butler-Henderson, Derren Brown and Dave Spikey. Vicki Butler-Henderson presents Fifth Gear on Channel 5. As well as presenting, she is also well known for her racing, holding a Race International 'C' Class licence. Her first book, 'Vicki Butler-Henderson's 100 Sexiest Cars' is published by Carlton Books. Derren Brown has been dubbed the 'psychological illusionist'. He's a performer who combines magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship in order to seemingly predict and control human behaviour, as well as performing mind-bending feats of mentalism. His new book 'Confessions of a Conjurer' is structured around the various stages of a conjuring trick, combined with autobiography. Published by Channel 4 Books. Dave Spikey is an award-winning comedian. The recipient of two British Comedy Awards, he co-wrote and co-starred in the acclaimed 'Phoenix Nights' as the inimitable Jerry St Clair. Before becoming a professional comedian he worked in the NHS as a Chief Biomedical Scientist in Haematology at the Royal Bolton Hospital. His autobiography, Under the Microscope: My Life is published by Michael O'Mara Books.
