“you have a good dossier there” [LAST]    There were supernatural elements in the original Sherlock Holmes stories. Elements of gothic intrigue like voodoo, a possible vampire, a family curse, and a spectral hound come to mind. So when Christian Klaver looked at the intersection of his interests in sci-fi, fantasy, Sherlock Holmes, and writing, it was only natural to find some existing and contemporary examples and bring them to life. Thus was born series from Titan Books. Christian shares stories of these passions with us, bringing us from his childhood inspiration to the Universal monsters, Cthulhu, and more. Some stories are just too big for one podcast. Some stories should be too big for one book.  Sam Rebelein's Edenville is one such story. This 300-something page novel has more crammed into it than your average fantasy trilogy. There is backstory upon backstory, a cosmic framework, and enough different monsters to fill Guillermo del Toro's minibus. Yet somehow Sam corrals it all into a whimsical horror romp – a well-organised riot. We talk about ideas… about thinking them up, letting them evolve and, most crucially, getting them on paper. We talk narcissistic writers, the power of dreams, the unique eeriness of the Hudson River Valley and the questionable nature of curses. This conversation is a call to arms for writers. It's a weary acceptance that maybe, just maybe, sitting your arse in the chair is the most important thing you can do all day. Enjoy! Edenville was published October 3rd by Titan Books and HarperCollins Books mentioned: Echo (2022), by Thomas Olde HeuveltCamp Damascus (2023), by Chuck TingleHannibal (1999), by Thomas Harris Support Talking Scared on Patreon Come talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show

Hello! Welcome to another edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. For this episode, I'm delighted to be joined by John Walsh, author of the exceptionally detailed, exhaustively researched and endlessly entertaining The Wicker Man: The Official Story of the Film, just out from Titan Books. We're going to be watching the version of The Wicker Man known as The Final Cut, which has slightly different running times depending on the frame rate, but should stay in sync throughout our chat. John has spoken to almost literally everyone for the book, anyone who had anything to do with the making of the 1973 masterpiece, which happens to be my favourite horror film, and be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. By the end of the commentary, you'll think you know everything there is to know about the making of The Wicker Man, but I promise you, John has only scratch the surface: to dig deeper, you'll really need to pick up that book – ideally a physical copy, as it's a beautiful thing in its own right, packed with archive material, rare and previously unseen photographs and all kinds of other buried treasures. I'm really grateful to John for walking through the film with me, and for unearthing so much incredible background for the book and the commentary. Apologies for the slight quality degredation in the opening 20 minutes or so, likely due to dark magic by the people of Summerisle. Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. This week we're joined by the man, the myth, the mystery that is Chuck Tingle. Who knows the truth of this enigmatic figure? What visage lies beneath the pink bag that forever encases his face? Does he really have a PhD in massage? Puzzles abound…The one thing that's certain is the brilliance of his new novel. Camp Damascus is a full-bloodied horror novel set in that most hideous of environs: a religious community and a gay conversion camp. Sounds triggering. It may well be … but Chuck has also invested this story with such hope and joy and yes, LOVE, that it more than salves all the human horror and demonic jump scares. We cover tons in this episode – the stoic seriousness of fictional sex, the maligned trinity of genres, rattling the religious right, the simple trick to writing effective jumpscares and the final, full declaration of why love is real. Enjoy!Camp Damascus was published by Tor Nightfire on July 18th and Titan Books on July 27th An article about Chuck – worth readingOther books mentioned in this episode include:Straight (2021), by Chuck TingleRevival (2014), by Stephen KingDark Matter (2010), by Michelle PaverSupport Talking Scared on Patreon Come talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show

Gareth L. Powell's Descendant Machine (Titan Books, 2023) is set about 200 years in the future, and yet the recent explosion in A.I. technology suggests Powell's imagined future—in which the minds of humans and A.I.s are symbiotically enmeshed—is just around the corner. The Bristol author's new novel centers around a mysterious machine called the Grand Mechanism, an impenetrable black sphere, which, about two thousand years ago, replaced a star in a binary system. The system is home to a humanoid, multi-armed species known as the Jzat, who are divided among those who want to crack open the Grand Mechanism, believing it contains a wormhole to connect them with a more advanced Jzat civilization, and those who want to leave the mechanism alone, fearing it contains a black hole or other existential danger. “I got a bit satirical with the way the faction is appealing to nationalism to get the power they need to open this thing by promising sunlit uplands and making Jzat great again,” Powell says. “It's like any scientific experiment, any scientific knowledge that sentient beings see. It's a process of just poking stuff to see what happens. Chimpanzees do it, and crows do it. You find something you don't understand, you poke it and try and break it and see what it can do. And that's how we learn. And that's what's basically happening on a massive scale in this story with this ancient machine that nobody knows what it does, but they want to poke it and see what happens.” Powell is known for using fast-paced, character-driven science fiction to explore big ideas and themes of identity, loss, and the human condition. He has twice won the coveted British Science Fiction Association Award for Best Novel and has become one of the most-shortlisted authors in the 50-year history of the award, as well as being a finalist for the Locus, British Fantasy, Seiun, and Canopus awards. Solid writing, great character development, humor, personal loss, and excellent points to ponder in every chapter" Turbulence won the Wired Goldenbot Award. His latest novel The City Inside, published by TordotCom, tells the story of Joey, a "Reality Controller" in near-future Delhi. Her job is to supervise the multimedia multi-reality livestreams of Indi, one of South Asia's fastest-rising online celebrities. It turns out some of those live streams are manufactured to your tastes and desires. Popularity, views, and likes are now part of the sophisticated disinformation machine. To make matters worse, Joey and her friends live in an outright surveillance state. Understanding where cameras are located and being careful about what they say are in the forefront of their minds. To survive in near-future Delhi, one needs to constantly play defense and be on alert. The City Inside reads not as a dystopia, but rather as a forecast for tomorrow. Samit's education at the University of Westminster, London in broadcast and documentary film-making lends itself to the immediacy felt when reading this book. Despite the extraordinary circumstances the characters live under, there is a sense of hope and humor throughout the book. Samit prepares to write a novel by immersing himself in research. Now, you would think that someone who spent a multitude of hours researching potential issues for the human race would be quite dour, but he was very affable and we absolutely enjoyed our conversation with him. As you'll see, he's very thoughtful during the interview. Although he lives in Delhi, India, Samit was kind enough to interview while he was on vacation. Author Josh Winning joins us to talk about Jim Henson and Frank Oz's most challenging creation, The Dark Crystal. Josh's novel The Shadow Glass has been described as a love letter to Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal so we had a lot to talk about such as The Dark Crystal ‘s let-the-audience-figure-it-out approach to worldbuilding, the depth of that worldbuilding once you get a handle on it, the moments of humour in an otherwise pretty serious film, Jim Henson's reading habits, the groundbreaking puppeteering, as well as some general thoughts on the Muppets and why The Henson Company seems to have avoided anything on the scale of The Dark Crystal in recent decades. It was a fascinating conversation. Note: Thanks to some Zoom weirdness, we had to use a single-track backup of this episode which means that Alan's plan to remove some interruptions from his dog in post couldn't happen. So apologies for any sub-par audio and dog noises. Josh is @JoshWinning. His novel The Shadow Glass is out now from Titan Books. Alan is @alan_maguire. Juvenalia is his main thing right now. Sarah is @griffski. Her books are in all good bookshops. Thank you to Dee McDonnell for our artwork. We have a Patreon!
