Host Jeremy C. Park talks with Jeremy Qualls, Executive Director of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center at Williamson County Schools, who discusses the center's growth and success. Established seven years ago, the center initially had 72 students but now has 270 with a long waitlist. The program offers a unique, non-traditional education experience, exposing students to real-world entrepreneurship, including interactions with venture capitalists, mentors, and angel investors. Students spend one period a day at the center, learning through hands-on experiences and collaborations. Mentors include leaders from business, tech, medical and other industries in the community and specialists like a patent attorney.Jeremy Qualls next highlights their pitch process where the student entrepreneurs compete for a grant, which is 100% funded by private donations. He mentions that the winner gets an opportunity to submit to Chicago and that they have had several students make the top 20 in the past. He shares the success story of Anthony Beckett, who created an educational technology product called Markify, which won the IncubatorEdu National Pitch Competition last July and already has gained 12,000 users worldwide. Jeremy mentions that Markify is now looking for angel investment to hire someone to market and sell the product.Jeremy Qualls then discusses the success of a current student, Abby Goddard, who created Spikey, a spiked drink detection keychain. Abby was selected as the winner of their local Shark Tank this year. She recently fulfilled an order for 800 units.Jeremy then introduces The Innovation Hub, a project funded by a grant from the State of Tennessee for vocational education. The Innovation Hub, which will be a 25,000 square foot facility, aims to shift the traditional educational model and create innovative partnerships. He discusses the new vocational pathways being introduced at the central facility. The aviation program, in partnership with Franklin Special School District and Hawkins Flight Academy, allows students to obtain a private pilot license at 16. The program also includes a partnership with MTSU, providing up to 12 hours of college credit. The entrepreneurial program, in partnership with Thompson Caterpillar, offers two post-secondary programs: heavy machine technology and electrical power generation. These programs are designed to provide direct-to-work opportunities and matriculate into post-secondary institutions. The Innovation Hub also will focus on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and hospitality, with a culinary arts program being the largest requested CTE program. The Innovation Hub will include a mock hotel lobby, a work-based learning site with Honest Coffee, and more. The project is expected to be completed by August 2026 for the start of the 2026-2027 school year.Jeremy Qualls wraps up discussing the importance of partnerships in workforce development, particularly in the Middle Tennessee region. He emphasizes the need for business partners with a desire for a return on investment in the form of a future workforce. He also mentions the need for more partners offering apprenticeships or internships, and the possibility of in-kind donations. Dr. Fine discusses using animals for therapy and communication with children, highlighting the introduction of his first pet, a gerbil named Sasha, to a program for children with learning disabilities in 1973. Dr Fine describes the diverse range of companion-animals he works with, from dogs to lizards, and emphasizes the importance of respecting all as sentient beings. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Matt after long overdue multiple mutual connections trying to connect us. I met Matts mom beforehand at a dance competition for charity and she had mentioned we would get along and then came to find out my wife Chelsea had grown up with Matt so everything aligned and we made it happen. My first impression after meeting Matt was positive because his energy in contagious. He has a strong and vibrant personality that shines through as he walks into the room. Matt found success early on in his life in the business world and found himself in a position to create his own business. His business centered around helping others tap into their own potential, find their "spikey" point of view combined with his own knowledge of neuroscience and personal journey through pain and sacrifice. His personal journey of overcoming challenge goes all the way back to young adulthood. Alchemizing Bread Crumbs, Dishes and Legos   Alexandra just walked into my office to tell me that she thinks our rooster, Happy, is dying.    Before we talk more about that…   Yes, our rooster's name is Happy.    Emerson and Eleanor are phenomenal pet namers. We have Happy the Rooster, Lovey and Floppy and Spikey and Longbeak and Goldie the chickens.    Then there's Zap—the dog that showed up on our property one New Year's Day a couple of years ago and adopted us. And don't forget Wags, another awesome dog who decided he wanted to move in one day as well.    Now…   If you've ever listened to one of my Zoom calls, you've probably heard a rooster in the background.    Sometimes, I have to admit, I find his crow charming while other times I find it distracting—whether it's on a Zoom or in my morning meditation when he's doing his thing RIGHT outside my office window.    But…   This rooster is truly an awesome rooster. We hatched him ourselves and he does his job protecting his hens Heroically well and he's not an ornery guy like his dad rooster was.    So…   When Alexandra came in and told me she thinks he's dying (while she does her country-nurse thing with him to try to save him!), I felt a deeper sense of sadness than I've felt when we've lost some other chickens and found other dead creatures on the property.    I always use those moments as another Stoic reminder of Memento Mori but this one hit me deeper.    I really like this guy!!   Then I thought of a story Alexandra shared once. It was about bread crumbs.    I forget the relationship book from which she got the wisdom but the basic idea was this…   In a significant long-term relationship with ANYONE (let alone a spouse or kids) there will INEVITABLY be things about that person that annoy you.    Maybe they leave bread crumbs on the counter (which irritated the author of the book who told the story) or maybe they leave the dishes out or maybe they leave their Legos all over the house if they're kids (which, in his less-than-enlightened moments can irritate the author of this +1 ).    Or maybe they do any number of things people do because they're human and none of us are perfect.    It's easy to find those little things annoying.    And…   What if…   One day…   Those breadcrumbs or dishes or Legos or whatever weren't there because that loved one was no longer there?   All of a sudden we'd MISS those breadcrumbs or dishes or Legos or whatever.    That's what I thought of when I heard Happy might not make it. He hasn't been crowing for the last several days because he hasn't been feeling great. I already miss him.    And I want to make sure I don't let those little things my kids and wife and others do that I might find annoying distract me from the fact that their presence in my life—with ALL the imperfections—is a profound GIFT.    In fact, what I try to do these days is use those VERY things I used to find annoying as THE TRIGGER for me to appreciate just how blessed I am.    I hope our rooster makes it so I can remind myself of this wisdom every time I hear him crow.    Cock-a-doodle-do!!!   Day 1.    Let's go.

In 1992, Hurricane Andrew ravaged South Florida. Prior to the hurricane, bassist Danny Lore was playing in the punk band Grover Snatch. But the hurricane caused some members to move away. Rather than replace them, he decided to start a new ska influenced punk band: Against All Authority. For months they practiced acoustically--there was no power in South Miami for a while. And as the band got going, they booked their own shows at the Kitchen Club in Coconut Grove. No one else would. Besides, being punk meant being an active participant in the scene. Today we talk to three members of South Florida political punk-ska band Against All Authority, whose records Destroy What Destroys You and All Fall Down are absolute classics. We walk through their entire entire career, get to the bottom of just what makes these guys tick, and find out why punk and ska are so important to them. We talk about 80s punk venue Cameo Theater (Same club that Cannibal Corpse played in the Ace Ventura Pet Detective), early rejected band names, their 1968 school bus that broke down at least 10 times on tour, and their legal battles with American Automobile Association. We also discuss issues with their labels, why they broke up in 2007 and what led to them reforming 15 years later. They also tell us a bizarre story that involves killer monkeys that escaped from a nearby laboratory!  Support the show
