In this episode of Pearls On, Gloves Off, Mary sits down with Mike Abbott, Head of the Thomson Reuters Institute, to unpack the paradox: how can firms be thriving on paper while the ground shifts beneath them? Clients are tightening spend. Work is moving down-market and in-house. AI adoption is accelerating, especially on the client side, yet most of the industry still can't measure ROI beyond "time saved." And the biggest unresolved question hangs over everything: when tech makes legal work faster, who gets the benefit? Mike brings the data, the patterns, and the historical context, plus a sobering signal: late 2025 showed a sharp dip in M&A alongside a rise in countercyclical practices. If you're trying to understand what's actually coming in 2026, this is your listen. In this episode: Record profits… and warning lights: Why a "great year" can still mask real risk (and why it feels eerily familiar). The work is moving: Not just in-house, down-market into the second hundred and mid-size firms. AI as an efficiency engine (for now): Adoption is surging, but ROI tracking is still immature across the ecosystem. The billing model stalemate: If ~90% of billing is still hourly (with "creative" hourly flavors), what happens when AI collapses time-to-deliver? Value gap reality check: The uncomfortable stat: one in four clients say they've never experienced a law firm that delivers value - and what "value" actually means to clients. Legal ops as the bridge: Why the legal ops function is more critical than ever, and why it's unlikely to be a passing trend. Mary O'Carroll kicks off a new era of Pearls On, Gloves Off - independent, sponsor-curious, and still laser-focused on what's actually changing in legal. Her first guest in this new chapter is the person many listeners will recognize instantly: Alex Su. Former litigator, ex-legal tech sales leader, early "legal influencer," and now Chief Revenue Officer at Latitude. This episode is a blunt conversation about the gap between buying innovation and actually using it. Mary and Alex dig into why legal excellence by itself doesn't deliver business value, why so much AI adoption is still "innovation theater," and why integration (not hype) is the make or break factor for legal tech, legal services, and legal careers. In this episode The core thesis: Legal excellence alone doesn't cut it. If a lawyer, ALSP, or AI tool isn't embedded in the workflows, it won't stick. AI reality check: 2025 was the year of "buying"; 2026 will be about renewals, retention, and ROI. CLM is back: "Agents will replace workflows" didn't land (yet). Real SaaS infrastructure still matters, and AI works best layered into it. Disaggregation/right-sourcing is accelerating: Big Law moves upmarket, expanding room for ALSPs, flexible talent, and tech-enabled delivery. The Innovator's Dilemma for firms: Dropping "lower-value" work can erode stickiness, and invite new providers to move up the chain. Training is the looming issue: As work shifts and automates, the profession has to rethink where reps and apprenticeship come from. For those thinking seriously about legal transformation, technology, and where the industry is headed, this conversation lays out what actually matters next. Political commentator Scott Jennings has been called the “conservative explaining Red America to CNN viewers.” As the in-house Republican on CNN's NewsNight With Abby Phillips debate panels, he often acts as a de facto Trump spokesman at the table. Jennings has been in Republican politics for more than two decades. In the mid-aughts he worked as a Special Assistant to President George W. Bush, and later advised Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell in multiple campaigns. Jennings was openly critical of President Trump before and during his first term, especially after the January 6th attacks. But in his new book, A Revolution of Common Sense: How Donald Trump Stormed Washington and Fought for Western Civilization, Jennings argues that Donald Trump's second term is not just a political comeback, but a transformation of the presidency itself. Kara and Scott spar about the Epstein files, discuss what they mean for the MAGA movement, and whether Trump's policies are really “common sense.” Plus, how Scott turned into a MAGA man and why he likes being the odd-Republican-out at CNN. Alex talks about the hottest issue leading up to next week's election….the 2026 election. California's Proposition 50 is a power play by Governor Newsom and Democrats to fight back against Republican gerrymandering in Texas, in the hopes of saving Democratic seats in Congress in the midterm elections. Now a firestorm has ignited with states across the country launching redistricting efforts, and both parties have come to play. First, Alex hears about grassroots efforts to tackle the issue from Richard von Glahn, the Executive Director of People Not Politicians in Missouri. Then she speaks to democratic strategist David Plouffe about the moral quandary Democrats find themselves in, and why our hyper partisan political environment necessitates a gloves-off approach. In this episode of Pearls On, Gloves Off, Mary O'Carroll sits down with John LaBarre, General Counsel of Harvey. From Google to Snowflake and now a leader in legal AI, John's career reflects the tech world's evolution. Together, they dig into the pivotal moment we're living through — when generative AI enters the legal profession not as a futuristic idea but as a productivity‑enhancer in real time. In this episode: Why legal is ripe for AI: He explains how the legal profession acts as a "low‑hanging fruit" for generative AI, given its massive volumes of unstructured data and repetitive tasks. Re‑learning technology: Generative AI isn't like a perfect calculator. John argues lawyers must shift from expecting "the correct answer" to co‑working with predictive tools: prompting them, reviewing them, validating them. Measuring ROI: From the in‑house perspective, it's about doing more with the same budget. John shares examples where what used to be a 30–40 hour review became a 2–3 hour job thanks to AI. Law firms, adoption & the billable hour paradox: The conversation pivots to law firms — how they adopt AI, the challenges of traditional measurement (billable hours), and why this moment might represent another nail in that coffin. What's next: They explore the next three‑to‑five‑year horizon — what would make AI truly transformative, what still needs to happen, and why "agents" handling NDAs or contract workflows aren't far off. If you're involved in legal operations, in‑house counsel, or law firm innovation, this episode offers actionable insight into how legal work is changing—and what you should be doing right now to keep up. In this episode of Pearls On, Gloves Off, Mary sits down with Jacqueline Lee, Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Flynn Group, to unpack what it takes to lead legal, compliance, and risk functions at scale. Flynn is the parent company behind brands like Panera, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Planet Fitness, and more, with 75,000+ employees across the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. Jacqueline shares her journey from big law to being unexpectedly tapped for a GC role just a year into her in-house life. Along the way, she reveals what's really changed (and what hasn't) in that transition — especially around how legal advice must shift to be more strategic, practical, and business-aligned. In this conversation, you'll learn: How to translate your legal skills for non-lawyer clients. Jacqueline stresses the importance of tailoring advice to how business leaders think and act — not how lawyers talk. Why “perfect information” is a myth in-house. You'll hear how GCs must balance risk, ambiguity, and the need to move fast. How to lead through crisis and uncertainty. Jacqueline's leadership during the pandemic reveals lessons in transparency, empathy, and restoring a feeling of control. How to demonstrate real value to the business. She explains her shift from narrative legal reports to visual dashboards, metrics tied to core business KPIs, and proactive reporting. The case for in-house litigation. Flynn handles much of its litigation internally; Jacqueline explains how they pick which matters to pursue internally vs. outsource — and why she still loves law. How to recruit, grow, and scale a legal team. We dig into her hiring philosophy, aligning on values, and the challenges of hybrid teams. Pricing and partnership with outside counsel. Jacqueline critiques the inefficiencies of hourly billing and shares how value-based arrangements can align incentives and build trust. If you're an aspirational in-house counsel or a legal leader grappling with how to prove impact, this episode is packed with insights you can start applying now. He says that trade negotiations and boycotts and national pride are not enough. He says everything from manipulating US elections, to sending spies overseas to mandatory military service - should be on the table. "Gloves Off," delivered by Brothers Nick and Timothy, stresses the need for us to adopt a warrior-like mentality in our spiritual battles. Drawing from passages such as Psalm 144:1-2 and 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, the message encouraged us to engage in relentless, action-oriented faith. It highlights the importance of personal holiness, discipline, and the expectation of victory, regardless of the challenges faced. Referencing biblical figures like Joshua, Caleb, and David's mighty men, the sermon underscores the necessity of standing firm and fighting alongside our fellow brothers. Ultimately, it calls for a gloves-off approach, urging the saints to fight with unwavering determination and to support one another in our spiritual journey

In this episode of The PDB Afternoon Bulletin: First, a veteran CIA station chief just offered some harsh criticism for the former Biden administration regarding the war in Ukraine, saying the former president sorely miscalculated with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin, giving Kyiv enough weapons to “bleed” but not to win. The result, he says, was condemning Ukraine to fighting a drawn out, meat grinder war with no end in sight. Later in the show—Israel is taking the gloves off with the Iranian-back Houthis, unleashing a second wave of airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen on Tuesday, including a strike on the country's main airport. The latest actions are a direct retaliation for Sunday's missile strike on Tel Aviv's international airport by the Houthis, which injured several people. In this episode of The PDB Afternoon Bulletin: We'll start things off with former President Donald Trump's latest would-be assassin, as reports emerge that he stalked Trump for roughly a month and wrote a letter detailing his intention to assassinate Trump before attempting to shoot him at his West Palm Beach golf club on September 15th. Then, we'll turn our attention back to the latest news out of Lebanon, where Israel has dramatically expanded their aerial attacks on Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants, striking at least 800 Hezbollah targets on Monday in the single deadliest day of fighting between the group and Israel since 2006.
