In the first episode of Series Five hear Olly Belcher, Immediate Past President of the St Edmund Hall Association, in conversation with the British Comedian, Al Murray. Al came up to the Hall in 1987 to read Modern History. Since then he has become known as the “Pub Landlord” as well as appearing on TV, recording podcasts, writing history books, playing the drums with Queen and dabbling in Politics. Spirit of the Hall podcast is produced by the St Edmund Hall Association, the voluntary alumni body independent which represents all Aularians. The views and opinions expressed in the podcast are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the Association, St Edmund Hall or the University of Oxford.
Would you expect to find the Pub Landlord chowing down in a Wagamama? Neither would we but it's exactly where he'll be. Al Murray tells Russell why he always has the same noodles, the best place to get pissed in Ireland and a sidetrack into trained cannon musicians. Al Murray is a proper British treasure. If you only know him as the Pub Landlord then there's so much more - he gives so much History, explains some fascinating background to percussion (he's a dab hand percussionist) and is a font of knowledge that refuses to stop spewing interesting stuff all over the podcast floor. It was a nightmare to clean up but that's NOT YOUR PROBLEM. As you heard on the podcast Al makes a regular WW2 podcast ‘We Have Ways of Making you Talk' which you can find HERE. If you haven't seen Al live, then you really should. One of the best. Such a great comic. He's just extended his current tour ‘Guv Island'. Check out the tour dates and get tickets by visiting Al's website www.thepublandlord.com In our Patreon Show this week, Al answers your questions, telling us which country is best at wars in history ever, he recommends the greatest drum solo ever recorded and Russell tells Al about the best/worst prank that was ever played on him. It is a cruel one. Really spicy. Go to: patreon.com/RussellHoward to get involved. We want to see you there, it's a lot of fun and you can join for free to start with so nothing to lose! I believe that's all the housekeeping. If you're still with me on this epic reading journey then well done. As a treat, I will tell you that I think the word ‘shoffice' is the worst in the English Language. And I don't mind mashing two words together at all, but everything about shoffice is ugly - it demeans two perfectly good words, and ideas, and the word, concept and everything about it is bleak. It's not a shoffice it's a shed with a computer in it. There you go. Some ‘treat' that was. Until next time, and remember to wrap up warm. You can't catch a cold by going out dressed like that (it's a virus, that's not how colds work) but you will look like a plucked chicken. Bye bye. *This is part 2 of Al Murray's episode. Though you are free to listen in whichever order you so desire we really do recommend listening to part 1 first or things might be slightly confusing*We all had heroes growing up. As a child Robin Allender used to run around the house dressed as James Joyce, pretending to make his way around Dublin whilst putting on an Irish accent. "Another Guinness, good sir" he'd often be heard proclaiming to his family, who thankfully always refused his requests. Landlord John, on the other hand, admired landlords. He would wake up early every morning and clean all the glasses in the house, before "opening up" the front door at midday. And every night, young John would fall asleep underneath a poster of his favourite landlord of all... The Pub Landlord, Al Murray. They say that dreams don't come true, but we disagree; because that very same landlord has made his way into the Correct Realm to create his dream pub.Al is synonymous with pubs, and we can't even begin to imagine how many pubs he visited whilst creating his 'Pub Landlord' character. There's surely going to be plenty of ales flowing around in his dream pub, and it's about to take shape before your very eyes (ears). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode, I talk to the comedy legend AL MURRAY about his comedy career. Murray is an English comedian, actor, writer, and musician. Murray's principal character is The Pub Landlord who puts Great Britain first in his values and will not settle for anything less. The joke is always on him and he has appeared as the character for over twenty years. I think The Pub Landlord is one of the greatest creations in modern comedy and I have laughed so much at his mighty comic performances over the years. Brilliant at audience interaction, I have seen him in many solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe (including The Only Way is Epic in 2012, One Man, One Guvnor in 2014 and Landlord of Hope and Glory in 2019). Most recently in 2021 Murray compared the online weekly quiz Al Murray's Lockdown Lock-in for Always Be Comedy Online. Thanks so much for listening to my podcast, if you like what you hear, please subscribe and I hope you enjoy the interview. It's part 2 of our look at Time Gentlemen Please in which we discuss the life and career of Richard Herring and find out what happened to the Pub Landlord after the show.
In this episode we're looking at the somewhat ill-fated attempt to convert Al Murray's Pub Landlord character into the medium of sitcom. We're big fans of Murray and fellow writer Richard Herring so this one is a bit of a nostalgia fest for the heyday of the nineties. But how does the show hold up twenty years later?
Joey and Bo sit down with the hysterical historian himself, the Pub Landlord, Al Murray to discuss some of the biggest moments in the 20th century and some of the biggest "meanwhiles" too. Have a laugh and a listen!
He was a vocal supporter of Brexit, but Pub Landlord wants the UK to leave the Solar System by 2030. That's according to the man behind the landlord, Al Murray. Comedian Al Murray joined Dermot and Dave for a chat about spending the most amount of time he's ever spent at home, intimate toys on Zoom calls and doing stand-up virtually. Al will be appearing at Comedy KARLnival Zoom Online with Karl Spain & friends on Friday 5th of February at 8pm. Tickets are available online now. Having snuck in a bonus army-themed podcast last week our half-hearted festivities are now brought to you as Episode 55. in possibly the least festive "Wargaming Christmas Special" ever committed to a digital recording medium. This week the intrepid band of coughing witterers open a suitably disappointing set of conversational presents from under the podcast tree. The surprise packages include The (literal) Army of Cheese, whether running machines with ashtrays were ever a thing (outside of that one episode of Minder), if faking malingering illness could become the next competition circuit, just how dangerous is electrostatic wet grass, does it really count if you buy a whole army by accident, the fall of the Damned Dynasty, how much gravy should you have when taking Sunday lunch with the Pub Landlord, who wants a tank gift, and (in what could end up being a new gameshow segment) Who's Gaff Is It Anyway? On the Festive theme, we also recommend for you over the next few weeks: Other Podcasts to listen to Computer Games to maybe buy at Christmas Which websites are managing to survive in the age of Facebook & Twitter This week Andy's Quiz is also all about Going Down - a rare double-entendre in the only gaming-themed podcast that still manages to ease gently into all of those crevices. We'll be taking a break now until the new year (unless we all get really bored once London gets put in Tier 3), but watch out for a random smattering of army-themed secials on Podbean and YouTube which may yet emerge from between the sprout-stained pages of the Radio Times over the next couple of weeks.
The gang's all here as the curtain goes-up on another musical, impression filled-extravaganza of an episode! This week, Jess and her trusty band find themselves going off-piste - in more ways than one- when they literally run-into comedian Al Murray's house - which turned-out to be a stroke of luck, as Al was in just the right mood to chat about his comedy career and early interest in impressions! In today's episode, we learn that as a child, Al had more than a passing interest in mimicry and displays the BEST Dalek impression you'll hear this side of Doctor Who. We also learn that his character of The Pub Landlord came about purely by accident, aided and abetted by none-other than Harry Hill. And we find out that Jess' mum has a story or two of her own about Al.... goodness me! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Listen in as I chat to Simon Sherwell a pub landlord from Keynsham, Bristol on how he is adapting to new ways of working in the current climate.
This week I visited the market ale house in Leyland (Lancashire) to have a chat with Jack about what it's like to run a micro pub. This included a liquid lunch that Jack kindly treated me to (get yourself a pilsner in there and you won't regret it) and escalated to rambling about a wide range of different things (a proper pub chat).Topics included what it's like to be in the pub industry, the differences, between a micro pub and a normal pub (there's not much too it believe it or not), drinking culture in the UK, pickled eggs (yes you read that right) and the time I bottled it when serving comedian Dave Spikey. If you enjoyed this podcast then please hit the subscribe button and give it a 5 star review and if you want to watch the visual version of the podcast then hit the link below! https://youtu.be/PbuVF6UG4Hk

Ever since September 2015, when the allegation emerged that the Prime Minister, David Cameron, had performed a sex act on a dead pig as a student, British politics has entered a strange new reality, in which satire has endlessly been pronounced dead. In this edition of Suite (212) Extra, Juliet talks to Huw Lemmey about how to make fun of the age of austerity and absurdism, polarisation and pigfucking, focusing on Huw's new book, Red Tory: My Corbyn Chemsex Hell. All over the world, scientists are busy trying to build quantum computers. What the photonic muck is a quantum computer? And why do you need dental floss to make one? How come it looks like a steampunk chandelier? And sounds like an armoured Morris dancer on a punctured spacehopper? Do they really work in parallel universes? And what's all this about quantum supremacy? Does it mean we'll soon have to submit to an army of quantum robot overlords? In this episode, we answer all these questions and more with the help of top quantum physicists including Dr Jerry Chow of IBM, Professor John Martinis of Google and Professor Simon Benjamin of Oxford University. And we drop in on The Pub Landlord, Al Murray, to see if he has any pressing questions about this exciting new technology...

BREXPLICIT LANGUAGE ALERT: This week special guest and Great British comic AL MURRAY wades into the Brexit mess in no uncertain terms (and he hasn’t even got his Pub Landlord hat on).How quickly does Nigel Farage’s bloody-good-laugh persona dissolve when you stand against him in a General Election? Is the Pub Landlord suffering a terrible case of Bregret and confusion? And what the hell is really going on with Labour’s invisible Brexit policy? Best not play this one on the school run unless you want the kids to learn exciting new vocabulary. Also this week: major shout-outs for the first of our PATREON supporters. RHEFP 2013 #17: Al Murray, Paul Provenza, Sally Anne Hayward - Pissing on Thackeray's Grave. Richard is surprised by a treasure found in his charity bucket and annoyed by middle lane drivers. But he is soon cheered up by a menage a trois with a couple of Muppets, Paul Provenza and Al Murray. What is it acceptable to say on Twitter? Can a joke make you drown? Who was best, Dickens or Thackeray? Will Sky Atlantic broadcast Richard discussing eating Jesus' foreskin? Why are all the Edinburgh posters so lame and do they influence the public? Why are there so many people in Pub Landlord costumes in Edinburgh? Did the bean-faced postman ever score with Janet the barmaid? And are comedians allowed an opinion? With stand-up from Sally Anne Hayward. To buy a T-shirt or Hoodie or mug with a RHEFP or ham hand design (more variety to be added soon) visit http://richardherring.cottoncart.com

3 Oct '11 Ivy House, Norman Welch. Another fantastic Voice of Americans with Lewis Schaffer of Nunhead. Lewis Schaffer would say this wasn't one of his best but what does he know? Leanne Bower was under the weather and Chris Dixon manned the tech desk. We met for the first time Nunhead Heights main Pub Landlord Nick McNeil and what good guest he was - telling how his hippy parents threw stones at American soldiers at Greenham (?) in the last century. Also on board is our mate Norman Welch, a true American from Oklahoma or Missouri or somewhere. I'll find out more later. You can listen and tell me. With lovely Lisa Moyle, my American friend. The end is in sight, but will it keep moving further and further away like it did last year? Rich is joined by Al Murray, who today is playing his most complex and bizarre character - himself - and there's chat about the Female Eunuch, murder mimes, the spontaneous generation of the Pub Landlord character, fights between members of the cast of Time Gentleman Please as well as whether monkeys can consent to sex, the Worst Comedy Experience of 2005 and the Edinburgh based birth of Al's eldest child in 1999.
