Joe Royle – the only living person to achieve legendary status at Everton as both a player and manager (the other being the late, great Howard Kendall) – invites Chris Beesley to his house for a special episode of Goodison Park: My Home. Royle, who grew up in Norris Green, attending Ranworth Square Primary School before going on to Quarry Bank High School where he developed into a talented all-round sportsman, also excelling in the high jump and swimming, became Everton's youngest-ever player at the time when he was controversially picked ahead of ‘The Golden Vision' Alex Young by Harry Catterick to make his debut at Blackpool aged 16 years and 282 days on January 15, 1966, a record that stood for over 42 years until it was eclipsed by Jose Baxter. Although Royle was part of the Blues team that lost 1-0 after extra time to West Bromwich Albion in the 1968 FA Cup final, alongside the ‘Holy Trinity' midfield of Kendall, Colin Harvey and Alan Ball, plus the likes of captain Brian Labone, goalkeeper Gordon West, fellow Scouser Tommy Wright and his good friend John Hurst, he was top scorer in Everton's 1969/70 League Championship-winning side. Once reaching 29 goals in all competitions in 1968/69, by the time Royle's Everton career had finished, he had netted more times for the club (119) than any player since Dixie Dean. Returning to Goodison Park as manager in November 1994 with the team bottom of the Premier League, he saved the Blues from relegation while also becoming the only manager in Everton history to win a trophy in his first season in charge. Some 30 years on, Royle remains the last Everton manager to secure major silverware for the club, while the following campaign (1995/96), he steered them to sixth place, which was their only top-half finish in the first decade of the Premier League. Now 75, he explains how the circumstances behind his departure continue to perplex him but as a True Blue, he was delighted to return to the Goodison hot seat for one last time as caretaker boss alongside his former player David Unsworth against Norwich City in 2016. Biography Steve is an actor, writer, comedian, juggler, a "Gillard award" winning presenter on BBC Radio Lancashire and now a finalist on ITV's Britain's Got Talent 2020. Steve most recently completed his 17th consecutive pantomime at The Grand Theatre, Blackpool (and his 22nd Pantomime in total) and was also made an honourary member of The Friends Of The Grand in 2016 for his services to the theatre. Last year he starred, to critical acclaim, in the World premier tour of "Naturally Insane: The Life of Dan Leno" and is taking the show to the West End (Criterion Theatre). In 2015 he performed 16 nights at The Manchester Arena as part of the "Phoenix Nights Live" show, helping raise well over £ 5 million in the process. He also appeared at the London Palladium twice within a month later that year when he performed as part of the TV show "Sunday Night At The Palladium" and as warm-up for "One Night With Neil Diamond". He spent many years as "Special Guest" on Dave Spikey's Tours and has supported several other top comedic names including Peter Kay, Mick Miller, Roy Walker and The Lancashire Hotpots! He was also the first comic, ever, to act as "Warm-up" for The Royal Variety Show featuring Take That, Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow and Meatloaf. He is a regular Television "warm-up" for programs such as "The Rob Brydon Show", "A Question Of Sport", "Mastermind" and even survived over 150 episodes of "The Price is Right" with Joe Pasquale a few years ago. Steve's first love, however, is Stand-Up and it is a job that has taken him all over the world: Cruises in the Med, Norwegian Fjords and the Caribbean, hotels and comedy clubs in Hong Kong, Dubai, Crete, Cyprus, Turkey and Japan. He is a regular headline act at The Comedy Store and other "alternative" venues and has several television appearances to his credit. "Phoenix Nights", "Max And Paddy's Road To Nowhere", "Peter Kay's Britain's Got The Pop Factor...", "Stand-up Britain", "Give Your Mate A Break", "The Afternoon Show", "Talk Of The North", a "Real Radio" advert, straight acting roles in "The Things You Do For Love" and "Magnolia", and despite being one of the North West's healthiest males, a medical insurance commercial for "Medicash". He was also featured on the Granada Programme "Behind The Scenes" and "That's Entertainment" (with Cannon and Ball) and was voted "Entertainer of the Year" at the inaugural Red Rose Awards. For over 12 years Steve could be found in the guise of "Mad Edgar" the court jester at Camelot theme park where he presented over 2000 "Crazy Juggling Shows". For years, the father-of-three has been encouraged by family and friends to audition for Britain's Got Talent, but didn't expect to get far. However in August 2020, Steve became the first act sent through to the final, impressing judges with his comedy juggling routines. For 51-year-old Steve, this is the latest journey in a rich history in the world of entertainment. Steve previously charmed the judges in the audition round, with his impressive juggling skills, using his mouth to juggle ping-pong balls before juggling three guitars. His semi final performance was a huge change for Steve, who is used to feeding off an audiences live reaction - the show had to be pre-recorded this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, and social distancing, and saw Steve perform to a huge Zoom wall of viewers, as well as the shows judges. The judges unanimously chose to send him through. As Ant and Dec confirmed the news, Steve said it was "crazy and unbelievable" that he had made it through, although he left the entire panel in stitches. The grand final took place in October 2020 and Steve was placed third overall. Which was a wonderful conclusion to an amazing run on the show. And Steve is looking forward to seeing you on tour next year. So watch this space.
In this episode, we dive deep into the life and career of the brilliant Caroline Aherne, a comedic genius who left a huge mark on British television. Known for her sharp wit, unique characters, and a deeply personal connection to her work, Caroline's career spanned everything from stand-up comedy to groundbreaking television shows. We'll take a closer look at her rise to fame, her iconic roles, and the cultural impact she had on the comedy landscape. Caroline first captured the public's attention with her character Mrs. Merton, the sweet yet biting elderly talk show host who charmed audiences with her deceptively innocent interviews. We'll explore the most memorable parts of The Mrs. Merton Show, which became a household favorite in the 1990s. Her ability to blend humor with warmth made her a standout figure in a male-dominated industry, and this episode delves into how she used her comedy to subtly challenge social norms and power dynamics. Beyond Mrs. Merton, Caroline Aherne co-created and starred in the beloved sitcom The Royle Family, a show that redefined British comedy with its portrayal of an ordinary, working-class family. We discuss how Caroline's writing and performance in the series broke away from traditional sitcom tropes, opting for a more subtle, observational style that resonated with millions. The show's focus on the mundane, everyday lives of its characters struck a chord with viewers and is considered one of the greatest British sitcoms of all time. However, Caroline's life wasn't without its struggles. In this episode, we also touch on her personal battles with health issues, alcoholism, and her retreat from the public eye at various points in her career. Despite these challenges, Caroline continued to create groundbreaking work that spoke to the heart of British culture. From her influence on future comedians to the timeless quality of her work, Caroline Aherne's contributions to the industry remain. Join us as we honour her life, her laughter, and the profound impact she made on British television. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. Published 4 February 2024This week we wanted to look at how hard running an event like the ILCA 7 Worlds really is for volunteer run yacht clubs, and what the requirements World Sailing have of the clubs to ensure it is a World standard event. We have this conversation all the time with people who have put their hand up to run World Championships. For this Ep. we chatted to Peter Royle, Commodore Adelaide Sailing Club. Pete is a lifetime competitive sailor and he tells us about the work his team put in, what they had to consider and the help ASC received from all the clubs in South Australia. She is absorbed in a crossword (The Times) but not oblivious. She does what always takes me aback. She reads out one of the clues. As if I would know the answer. Her gift for crosswords is alien to me. I get stuck at the first ambiguity or double-meaning. Whereas she sweeps through all illusions allusions red herrings and anagrams and is done most days by lunchtime. But her fondness for crossword puzzles is inseparable from my interest in words. Where they come from. What they might be doing. Earliest recorded use of 'In my mind's eye': Shakespeare's Hamlet (around 1599). Referring to the Ghost. My mother died years ago. What has induced me to write about her after all this time remains mysterious to me. It is connected to the climate crisis. As the natural historian David Attenborough says: 'the collapse of our civilizations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon.' In ways I cannot pretend to fathom I have found that writing about my mother is bound up with writing about Mother Nature and Mother Earth. And no doubt it has to do also with my own aging and the buried life of mourning. The strange timetables of realization and loss. A memoir is 'a written record of a person's knowledge of events or of a person's own experiences'. 'A record of events written by a person having intimate knowledge of them and based on personal observation.' So the dictionaries tell us. But this memoir of my mother makes no attempt at a comprehensive record.”Nicholas Royle is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Sussex, England, where he has been based since 1999. His latest book, David Bowie, Enid Blyton and the Sun Machine, is due to be published in November 2023.“There's a great David Bowie song called ‘Memory of a Free Festival.' It's a song about a concert that he organized in Beckenham in August 1969, the same weekend of Woodstock. He wrote this song about that concert. And in August 1969, also, his father died just 10 days or so before the concert. And his funeral took place days before. So the song that Bowie wrote is, I think, deeply resonant of the death of his father, as well as about the concert itself. And it's an extraordinary song about the end of the 1960s as well. I think there's a sort of critical consensus that it's with this song that Bowie really started coming into his own. And the second part is just kind of chorus. ‘The Sun Machine is coming down, and we are going to have a party.' And it's kind of demonic. It's an extraordinary refrain, which really, it's hypnotic. It's mesmerizing. And I found myself trying to think about this idea of a sun machine. What is a sun machine? How might we describe a sun machine? What do we feel about the idea of a sun machine? Something affirmative but strange that is arriving, that's coming down, and that we are going to celebrate. We're going to have a party. So the sun machine in the book is in part an attempt to think about what music does to me, or what music might do to people more generally. And that's another key way, I suppose, in which I'm interested in the wordless. The power of listening. The power of music. The capacity that music has to transport and to transform, but also the power of music. And this is something that David Bowie realized very early on. I think the power of music and its links with memory. So the relationship between music and mourning, but also the way in which our memories of our lives are bound up with music and how listening to music can be like opening a portal into the past. And into particular ways of thinking about memory.”www.routledge.com/An-Introduction-to-Literature-Criticism-and-Theory/Bennett-Royle/p/book/9781032158846 https://myriadeditions.com/creator/nicholas-royle/ https://quickfiction.co.uk/www.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.org IG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast
