Episode 426: Phil Royle talks about being brick-centric, fantastical escapism, and teaching everything you can

Looking for daily inspiration?  Get a quote from the top leaders in the industry in your inbox every morning.   Every year, millions of attraction visitors lose hours in line instead of making memories. Since its inception, accesso's virtual queuing has saved more than 4.5 billion minutes of wait time, freeing guests to pack their day with more rides, eats, and excitement. The result? Happier guests who spend more and a better bottom line for you. Ready to turn waits into wins? Visit accesso.com/ROIClinic. The queues are virtual. The results are real. Phil Royle is the Vice President of LEGOLAND Development and Operations at Merlin Entertainments. With nearly 25 years at Merlin, he's grown from a 17-year-old ride operator at Chessington World of Adventures to opening Madame Tussauds Hollywood, leading guest experience at LEGOLAND Florida, and spearheading the development and launches of new LEGOLAND parks in New York, South Korea, and Shanghai. His career spans operations, development, community engagement, and global brand stewardship across 11 parks, multiple water parks, and themed hotels. In this interview, Phil Royle talks about being brick-centric, fantastical escapism, and teaching everything you can. Brick-centric “We have to make sure that everything we do centers around the brick. The brick is absolutely a core part of everything we do.” Phil explains that the LEGO brick is not just theming—it's the operating system for the entire resort experience. Because LEGOLAND serves families with children ages two to twelve, attractions are intentionally designed as “pink-knuckle” firsts: first coaster rides, first driving school licenses, and first hands-on build zones. Accessibility and inclusion are embedded, from wheelchair access to widespread Certified Autism Center credentials across parks, aligning day-to-day operations with the brand's “only the best is good enough” ethos. He describes a tight collaboration with the LEGO toy company, aligning new lands and attractions to upcoming toy lines so the parks bring IP like Monkey Kid to life in rides, hotels, and interactive spaces. Even hotel rooms extend the brick-first philosophy: families wake up inside immersive, character-rich environments and can step straight into building play, ensuring the brick is literally the first and last touchpoint of the day. Fantastical escapism “We want that fantastical escape to just say, ‘wow, I woke up at LEGOLAND.'” Phil explains that escapism is a design and operational mandate for both kids and parents. While queues and coasters provide the familiar structure of a theme park day, discovery and agency come from integrated build-and-play moments, such play areas inside queues, free-build buckets, guided vehicle-building challenges, and earthquake tables that turn trial-and-error into laughter and learning. Guests think they're just racing cars or stacking towers; in reality, they're encountering physics, structural engineering, and cause-and-effect through tangible, joyful play. He emphasizes that parents are part of the magic. Attractions and play spaces are planned so adults can ride, build, and celebrate alongside their kids, or comfortably supervise from thoughtfully designed lounges with clear sightlines (single-entry/exit play areas). Dining, shows, seasonal characters, and event overlays (from Brick or Treat through the holidays) complete a rhythm that lets families “forget the big wide world” for a day and live inside a story built from bricks and imagination. Teaching everything you can “You can only move on if you teach your team absolutely everything you can so that they can be successful on their own.” Phil frames leadership mobility and park scalability as outcomes of radical knowledge transfer. Opening multiple parks across continents required documenting processes, building successor capability, and ensuring local teams could operate confidently after handover. When knowledge is hoarded, questions bottleneck at the last team; when it's centralized and shared, the next parks in the pipeline (Shanghai, Shenzhen, and beyond) can accelerate with fewer blockers. He also extends teaching beyond internal teams to partners, media, and communities, using proactive education to align global safety standards with local norms (as in South Korea), and cultivating networks where safety transcends competition. For Phil, mentoring, documentation, and cross-park/intake relationships are the real engines that let leaders “move on to the next project” without leaving gaps behind.   To connect with Phil directly, he recommends reaching out on LinkedIn. To learn more about the company and what's new at the parks, visit the LEGOLAND website (including information on seasonal events and upcoming coasters and lands in California and Florida).   This podcast wouldn't be possible without the incredible work of our faaaaaantastic team:   Scheduling and correspondence by Kristen Karaliunas   To connect with AttractionPros: AttractionPros.com AttractionPros@gmail.com AttractionPros on Facebook AttractionPros on LinkedIn AttractionPros on Instagram AttractionPros on Twitter (X)

Hi, it's Natalie here. This episode is an emotional and important one. I'm joined by Tim Royal, a television director known for his work on Coronation Street, Emmerdale, and EastEnders, who reached out to me to share the story behind his short film "It's the Hope That Kills You."If you've been listening for a while, you'll know that male factor infertility was part of my own fertility story. And this month on the podcast, we're shining the spotlight on male infertility and men's experiences, which often go unheard. Tim's story speaks to that silence and the emotional toll that fertility treatment can have on men. What we talk about:How Tim felt marginalised and overlooked throughout the IVF processThe emotional weight of never being called by name or offered therapyThe pressure of “sample day” and why language matters in the clinicThe cumulative trauma of repeated failed transfers and insensitive staff questionsA powerful idea: colour-coded patient folders to avoid retraumatising questionsThe stark contrast between treatment at St Mary's Hospital and CARE FertilityTim's experience of debilitating anxiety and his journey to seek therapyThe importance of recognising and challenging intrusive thoughtsHow IVF reshaped his relationships, identity, and day-to-day mental healthTim's reflection on IVF as a team effort, and how he supported his wifeThe impact of working on scripts about fertility while living through treatmentChoosing to use film as a tool for honesty, empathy, and social changeHow hope can both carry and crush us during infertilityThe moment everything changed: a final transfer, a fertility stone, and holding on to the “1 percent”About the filmIt's the Hope That Kills You is a 13-minute short film written and directed by Tim, based on his and his wife's seven-year fertility journey. Starting a beverage brand might be one of the hardest things you can do in CPG. The margins are thin, the logistics are brutal, and most investors will tell you not to even try. But Harvard Business School grad Vanessa Royle and her co-founder did it anyway. They built Tilden, a ready-to-drink, premium non-alcoholic cocktail from the ground up. It all started with kitchen experiments, then they raised their first friends-and-family round with intention, and structured their seed raise to last. From the start, they made one simple but rare choice: to build for profitability, not hype, to grow slowly, stay intentional, and do things on their own terms. But that gets hard once the feedback starts rolling in. Every investor has a different take on pricing, strategy, and what success should look like. Somewhere in all those opinions, even the most confident founder can start second-guessing themselves. Vanessa eventually learned that sometimes, you really do know your business better than any investor. Feedback can be helpful, but it doesn't mean you have to change direction every time someone tells you to. So what did she figure out along the way? And what should CPG founders really look for in an investor? In this episode, Vanessa shares how she tuned out the noise, made the right calls for her company, her unexpected mini Shark Tank moment, and what's next for Tilden as the brand keeps growing. Topics Covered; Why most investors discourage founders from entering the beverage industry How to structure a friends-and-family round that sets you up for long-term success The simple way Tilden kept their cap table clean while bringing dozens of early believers on board What founders get wrong about feedback, and how to know when to trust your instincts instead Why chasing growth too fast can backfire (and how profitability became Tilden's secret advantage) How to prepare for a seed raise when investors keep moving the goalposts What it really takes to stand out in a crowded non-alcoholic category Guest Bio Vanessa Royle is a Harvard Business School grad and co-founder of Tilden, a ready-to-drink, premium non-alcoholic cocktail that redefines how we celebrate without alcohol. After quitting drinking in 2020, Vanessa was frustrated by the lack of sophisticated non-alcoholic options. So she set out to create her own premium ready-to-drink cocktail that's low sugar. She has broken through the initial push and is currently selling in hundreds of stores. To learn more, visit https://drinktilden.com/, follow @drinktilden on Instagram. Welcome to the fifth series in the annual podcast programme from Academic Archers, bringing you papers from our 2024 conference. This episode looks at the connections between nature, gardening, and wellbeing, through research and the experiences of Ambridge residents.“If listening to the birds for five minutes makes you feel better, good for you”: Wellbeing, Gardens and Environmental Activity - Camilla Royle and Lily WhittleWhen Ambridge's local police officer Harrison took part in the Wildlife Trust's 30 Days Wild Challenge, he reflected a wider truth: many people turn to nature to cope with stress. Natural England reports that 90% of adults in England consider green and natural spaces to be good for mental health. But the relationship between gardening, environmental practice, and wellbeing is more complex.Drawing on interviews and surveys with gardeners, this paper explores how practices such as composting, water use and encouraging wildlife connect to wellbeing. Like Kirsty in The Archers, many gardeners find joy in sustainable approaches and in feeling they can do something in response to climate change. For others, the limits of gardening's impact can dampen the sense of control and reduce its mental health benefits.About the speakersDr Camilla Royle is a political ecologist and Teaching Fellow at Durham University. Her research explores how societies shape the environment and how environmental change in turn shapes human life.Lily Whittle is an undergraduate student at the London School of Economics, currently spending a year abroad in Social and Behavioural Sciences at IE University, Madrid. Joe Royle – the only living person to achieve legendary status at Everton as both a player and manager (the other being the late, great Howard Kendall) – invites Chris Beesley to his house for a special episode of Goodison Park: My Home. Royle, who grew up in Norris Green, attending Ranworth Square Primary School before going on to Quarry Bank High School where he developed into a talented all-round sportsman, also excelling in the high jump and swimming, became Everton's youngest-ever player at the time when he was controversially picked ahead of ‘The Golden Vision' Alex Young by Harry Catterick to make his debut at Blackpool aged 16 years and 282 days on January 15, 1966, a record that stood for over 42 years until it was eclipsed by Jose Baxter. Although Royle was part of the Blues team that lost 1-0 after extra time to West Bromwich Albion in the 1968 FA Cup final, alongside the ‘Holy Trinity' midfield of Kendall, Colin Harvey and Alan Ball, plus the likes of captain Brian Labone, goalkeeper Gordon West, fellow Scouser Tommy Wright and his good friend John Hurst, he was top scorer in Everton's 1969/70 League Championship-winning side. Once reaching 29 goals in all competitions in 1968/69, by the time Royle's Everton career had finished, he had netted more times for the club (119) than any player since Dixie Dean. Returning to Goodison Park as manager in November 1994 with the team bottom of the Premier League, he saved the Blues from relegation while also becoming the only manager in Everton history to win a trophy in his first season in charge. Some 30 years on, Royle remains the last Everton manager to secure major silverware for the club, while the following campaign (1995/96), he steered them to sixth place, which was their only top-half finish in the first decade of the Premier League. Now 75, he explains how the circumstances behind his departure continue to perplex him but as a True Blue, he was delighted to return to the Goodison hot seat for one last time as caretaker boss alongside his former player David Unsworth against Norwich City in 2016. In this episode, we dive deep into the life and career of the brilliant Caroline Aherne, a comedic genius who left a huge mark on British television. Known for her sharp wit, unique characters, and a deeply personal connection to her work, Caroline's career spanned everything from stand-up comedy to groundbreaking television shows. We'll take a closer look at her rise to fame, her iconic roles, and the cultural impact she had on the comedy landscape. Caroline first captured the public's attention with her character Mrs. Merton, the sweet yet biting elderly talk show host who charmed audiences with her deceptively innocent interviews. We'll explore the most memorable parts of The Mrs. Merton Show, which became a household favorite in the 1990s. Her ability to blend humor with warmth made her a standout figure in a male-dominated industry, and this episode delves into how she used her comedy to subtly challenge social norms and power dynamics. Beyond Mrs. Merton, Caroline Aherne co-created and starred in the beloved sitcom The Royle Family, a show that redefined British comedy with its portrayal of an ordinary, working-class family. We discuss how Caroline's writing and performance in the series broke away from traditional sitcom tropes, opting for a more subtle, observational style that resonated with millions. The show's focus on the mundane, everyday lives of its characters struck a chord with viewers and is considered one of the greatest British sitcoms of all time. However, Caroline's life wasn't without its struggles. We have this conversation all the time with people who have put their hand up to run World Championships. For this Ep. we chatted to Peter Royle, Commodore Adelaide Sailing Club. Pete is a lifetime competitive sailor and he tells us about the work his team put in, what they had to consider and the help ASC received from all the clubs in South Australia.
