In this episode, we had Live Your Dream grant recipient John Thomson on the pod to tell us all about his trip to Denali! Our Live Your Dream grant is our most popular grant, and it's powered by The North Face. John's LYD story is about feeling a sense of urgency–how now is the time to explore and pursue big adventures, a strong sense of carpe diem really. After nearly a decade away from Denali, John returned, only to get caught up in helping with a rescue, and not getting to pursue his goal route because of weather conditions. We sat down with John to hear about his grant experience, the rescue he helped with, his journey falling away from climbing and coming back to it, how guiding shaped his climbing, and why it meant so much to be standing on the top of Denali once again.

Taking Flight in Defense of Freedom Amid the sea of graduates preparing to receive degrees at Cedarville University stand four young men committed to defending freedom. Thaddeus Krueger, Matthew Crum, Brent Whitley, and John Thomson are on their way to becoming pilots in the United States Air Force. While completing their coursework at Cedarville these brave young men tackled the additional responsibilities of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC), necessitating early morning activity while the rest of the campus was sleeping. As a result of their hard work these men have been accepted into the highly competitive Air Force flight training program, putting them on a supersonic pathway to serving their country. They are excited by the promise of adventure, speed, travel, and being at the controls of multimillion-dollar equipment, but they are moved to the sky by their desire to protect the freedoms afforded to those fortunate enough to call the United States home. Motivated by their gratitude to God for the gifts of a free-market society, the right to worship Christ openly, the fair rule of law, and the still-possible American dream, these young men are prepared to give their all to ensure such blessings are available for generations to come. Discover the inspiring journey ahead for these young patriots on the Cedarville Stories Podcast. https://share.transistor.fm/s/b222ab15

Some of the earliest photos we have of Taiwan were taken by a British photographer who visited the southwest of the island in 1871. Taking pics back then was far from “point and shoot.” It was "get inside portable darkroom, grab delicate glass plate, cover with chemical A, then B, then C, then expose the plate to light, then more...” and on and on. We owe John Thomson a debt of gratitude for his short but significant expedition to “photograph wild Formosa!” In particular, his images of the “Pingpu” (Plains) Indigenous peoples of the Tainan and Kaohsiung hinterlands captured the twilight of their old ways. “Manchester is a place where young people come, to find their feet and then fly.” Manchester has hosted graduation ceremonies for thousands of students recently, who have reached the end of their undergraduate and postgraduate studies. It's a good time to celebrate everything Manchester has to offer its students, from the amazing creative and tech industries to the ever-growing music scene and nightlife. Poet, author and previous guest on We Built This City, Lemn Sissay, has been the Chancellor of The University of Manchester since 2015. He's made many contributions to the University in that time, but now he's handing over to Nazir Afzal. On this episode you'll hear Lisa reflect on the work Lemn's been doing, as well as hearing from Tom Bloxham MBE, Leader of Manchester City Council Bev Craig and actor and comedian John Thomson, on their student days in the city. ------ Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. From that point, the business, and its team members, have been involved in helping to support the creation of Modern Manchester – across regeneration, business, charity, leisure and hospitality, sport and culture. To celebrate the 25 years that Roland Dransfield has spent creating these bonds, Lisa is gathering together some of her Greater Mancunian ‘family' and will be exploring how they have created their own purposeful relationships with the best place in the world. In this limited series, we will explore the frontiers of risk and innovation. Join the Re/Imagine team, Barney's faculty, graduate students, and leading thinkers in the sector to explore how technology, science, and entrepreneurship will shape risk management in the future. The new emerging risk management environment introduces many new business practices such as “smart contracts”; the use of alternative currencies, and expedited claim processes. Blockchain, examined on its own, is emerging as an “operating system” which can facilitate many “businesses-to-business” transactions. Yet it has been almost exclusively associated with cyber currency transactions. When properly structured and controlled, blockchain transactions offer significant enhancements to risk financing transactions which can be secure, timely, accurate, and reconcilable. So why aren't we seeing it utilized predictably within the insurance ecosystem? We dive into these concepts and explore associations between blockchain and the Wild West. John Thomson, Assistant Dean, Barney School of Business, Alec Boyd, Student, University of Hartford, and Simon Kolkmann, Co-Founder & CTO, RYSKEX Inc., join us to discuss evolving trends and opportunities. In this limited series, we will explore the frontiers of risk and innovation. Join the Re/Imagine team, Barney's faculty, graduate students, and leading thinkers in the sector to explore how technology, science, and entrepreneurship will shape risk management in the future. Today, many emerging and systemic risks are becoming uninsurable. Examples include climate change, cyber security, and supply chain disruptions. The evolving trends are now leading to the use of traditional insurance to its maximum viability and supplementing risk management and risk financing with alternative capital. John Thomson, Assistant Dean, Barney School of Business, Girik Nagpal Graduate Student, University of Hartford, and Marcus Schmalbach, CEO, RYSKEX Inc., join us to discuss evolving trends and opportunities.
Join the Re/Imagine team, Barney's faculty, graduate students, and leading thinkers in the sector to explore how technology, science, and entrepreneurship will shape risk management in the future. In this week's episode, we explore and discuss the emergence of ESG (environment, social, and governance) investment and operating strategies. ESG has evolved into a cultural context for management, demonstrating value in the short term and adding value in terms of organizational sustainability and operational agility, and flexibility. Adoption of ESG criteria is becoming evident in many organizations; - both for-profit and non-profit entities as the paradigms of the past – sacrificing short-term gains for long-term returns has been disproven through academic research. While ESG has emerged as a powerful foundation for a resilient culture for organizations, we have to ask, who is the driving force behind ESG? Is it the company or the consumer? Listen to learn more. John Thomson, Assistant Dean, Barney School of Business, Anthony Senseman, Student, University of Hartford, Robert Smith, President, and Chief Investment Officer, Emma Harper, Vice President, Senior ESG Research Analyst, and Andrew Poreda, ESG Investing Expert, Sage Advisory Services, join us to discuss evolving ESG trends and opportunities. This week we'll be taking things a bit easier, recuperating at a health farm, sunning ourselves in exotic places, and asking to be taken seriously as an action star, while somehow looking like a cast member from The Mikado. Yes, it's Never Say Never Again. Joining me to throw magic urine from elaborate jetpacks, and back by popular demand, is John Thomson! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

“You didn't need music. You could listen to the stories by earwigging” Manchester poet Argh Kid is one of many guests on We Built This City, to reflect on the fact that Mancunians tell great tales. As National Storytelling Week approaches, host Lisa Morton brings you some of the best stories about Manchester people, from the We Built This City Archives. You'll hear about the famous to the not so famous. You'll hear about poetry of everyday life, plus you'll hear a story about Roland Dransfield himself. Featuring contributions from Argh Kid aka David Scott; Karen Gabay; Shelina Begum, Dianne Bourne, Liz Taylor, Justin Eagleton, Eamonn O'Neal, Gary Neville, Geraldine Ryan, Sacha Lord, Sid Williams and John Thomson ------ Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre.
