This episode Geoff talks to David Woodhouse about his quadruple award-winning book, 'Who Only Cricket Know: Hutton's Men in the West Indies 1953/54'. Held at the London Library in central London it's a wide ranging discussion in which David explains why the MCC tour of that year was a key moment in the history of cricket and society more generally on both sides of the Atlantic. Inspired by CLR James's 'Beyond a Boundary' David explores the way in which the England team embodied the class tensions of post-War Britain and also the way in which racial tension and the struggle for independence was a constant presence in what was billed as a struggle for the title of world champions of cricket.
Guests: Scyld Berry and David Woodhouse We tend to take the concept of the tour for granted, yet is it not one of cricket's strangest phenomena? Devised on Victorian timescales of months at sea followed by a lengthy navigation of distant lands, the notion feels increasingly at odds with modern life. So bound up is cricket with travel that the centrally contracted England player will spend no more than a couple of months each year in their own bed, producing a carbon footprint more like Orwell's boot stamping on a human face forever. And yet the tour offers the game much of its romance, its exocticism, its thrill. The variety of experience, the difference in everything from the pitches to the crowd noise, the chance to see and understand something of how the rest of the world lives and plays, offer cricket a richness that other sport don't have. Much of the game's myth making and camaraderie comes from being thrown together, a travelling circus of players, families, coaches, support staff and media. In this episode Jon speaks to Scyld Berry, one of the game's foremost writers for many decades, the Telegraph's chief cricket correspondent and a former editor of Wisden Almanack. He also speaks to David Woodhouse about one tour in particular - England's tour of West Indies in 1953/4, a tour that Len Hutton, who because the first professional to captain England overseas, said ‘shortened his career by two years', to which the tour player/manager Charles Palmer replied, ‘I'm surprised he only said two'. The Cricket Badger, James Buttler, is joined by author David Woodhouse to talk about his book 'WHO ONLY CRICKET KNOW - Hutton's Men in the West Indies 1953/54'. Who Only Cricket Know tells the story of the second most controversial tour in English cricket history after Bodyline and has not been revisited since two tour books came out in the immediate aftermath. The cricket is dramatic, the key characters fascinating, and it is awash with incidents on and off the field, many of them involving race and social class. This was the first tour in which MCC travelled by plane (although they returned home on the boat) and the first in they were captained by a professional player – Len Hutton. It was also Hutton's Yorkshire teammate Fred Trueman's debut tour and for the opposition, the Three Ws were in their pomp and a young man called Garfield Sobers made his international bow.

In the winter of 1953, the MCC sent a full-strength England team to the West Indies for the first time, led by Len Hutton, the first professional captain. The party included Denis Compton, Tom Graveney, Peter May, Trevor Bailey, and two pairs of great bowlers, Jim Laker and Tony Lock, and Fred Trueman, and Brian Statham. They played a thrilling series against a West Indian team with the three Ws, Clyde Walcott, Everton Weekes and Frank Worrell, and the spinners Sonny Ramadhin and Alf Valentine, who had triumphed in England three years before. The series was billed informally in advance as the world championship of cricket. But the cricket took second place to the external dramas, including arson and riots which exposed deep social, political, and racial divisions in both countries. Dr David Woodhouse has written an enthralling book about this series, and its context in both West Indian and English history. He is the guest of Peter Oborne and Richard Heller in their latest cricket-themed podcast. In Peter's unavoidable absence, Roger Alton is guest host.Read the full description here: https://chiswickcalendar.co.uk/episode-69-tantrums-and-turmoil-racism-and-riots-class-conflicts-and-colonialism-and-some-great-cricket-in-a-historic-tour/Get in contact by emailing obornehellercricket@outlook.com

About five years ago, the Lincoln Motor Company initiated a new design theme for its lineup called Quiet Flight. Instead of adopting a sporty, aggressive look like its competitors, the company chose to go in an opposite direction. On Autoline This Week, David Woodhouse, the Design Director of Lincoln, discusses how the new styling elements, like in the new Corsair, are helping to distinguish it from the competition.
