Season 18, Episode 7: Call it a mutual admiration society: given the way we respect Wisden, it's nice to get an observation back. More importantly this week, the kind of wild net-run-rate ending that we've been anticipating for some time came to pass in the women's World Cup qualifiers. The new English women's domestic system got started, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh played a stunner in their Test series, and Bangladesh's 10 and 11 remain the most entertaining batters in world cricket. Jason Gillespie tackles the Pakistan board, and there are moments worth looking at in a county round dampened by rain. Then, Ben Jones in the IPL warns against the rise of our robot overlords. In this episode, we dive into WWS - three non-negotiable habits for cricketing success: Walk, Water, Sleep. These might sound simple, but trust us, most people don't track them properly. We break down why these habits are essential for performance, how they impact recovery, and how small changes can lead to big results. You'll Learn:The Importance of Walking – Discover why walking is crucial for both recovery and endurance in cricket. We break down how increasing your daily walking reserve can improve efficiency on the field.Hydration and Athletic Performance – Learn how chronic dehydration affects performance and why tracking your water intake can transform your game. James shares his personal wake-up call when he realized he wasn't drinking enough. The Role of Sleep in Recovery – Understand how proper sleep enhances focus, endurance, and overall well-being. We discuss the common mistakes athletes make when it comes to rest.Tracking Habits for Success – Find out how simple habit tracking can expose blind spots in your routine. James shares how a journaling exercise helped him reset his hydration habits.Key Takeaways:Walking is a Performance Multiplier – Walking is not just for fitness; it builds endurance and movement efficiency essential for cricket. Many players underestimate how much they walk during a match.Hydration is Often Overlooked – Most people think they drink enough water, but tracking reveals otherwise. Making hydration a priority leads to better focus, energy, and recovery.Sleep Fuels Performance – Lack of proper sleep can lead to fatigue, poor decision-making, and increased injury risk. Cricket players need to prioritize sleep just like training.Tracking Creates Awareness – What gets measured gets managed. Writing down daily habits makes it easier to spot areas for improvement.Your Body Adapts Over Time – When you start drinking more water, your body takes time to adjust. After four to six weeks, hydration becomes second nature, and your performance improves.Quotes:"Most people think they're hydrated until they actually track their water intake.""If you don't track your habits, you're guessing and guessing won't make you better.""Your body craves what you give it consistently so why not make it crave water and movement?"Find James on: Instagram: @jamesbreese Twitter: @_jamesbreese To learn more about Cricket Matters and download your FREE copy of The High-Performance Handbook, please visit www.cricketmatters.com

Hi there! Welcome to Episode 247 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. The International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended Sri Lanka's crisis-ridden cricket board earlier this month, saying it had failed to ensure there was no government interference in its affairs. The game's world governing body said Sri Lanka Cricket was “in serious breach of its obligations as a member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and to ensure that there is no government interference.” The suspension came a day after Sri Lanka's parliament asked the board to resign over allegations made by sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe that it had siphoned off millions of dollars. The update now is that Sri Lanka can compete in bilateral cricket and ICC tournaments but has been stripped of their hosting rights in the next edition of the ICC Men's U19 World Cup. In this episode, we discuss all that transpired and get to the root of the matter. On the podcast today to join us for this discussion, we have Estelle Vasudevan, a freelance journalist in Sports Media. The Podcast is also available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify for Podcasters, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and many other platforms and spread the word. Get set to revel in the cricketing escapades of recent times with us. We're taking you through a journey of victories and strategic brilliance that have left us in awe. First up, we've got the World Cup match between India and Pakistan, a thrilling encounter that ended in India's favor. We dissect the pivotal role played by India's bowlers and Rohit Sharma's celebration of his 300th ODI-6. But the main event is the underdog story of Afghanistan's fantastic win against England, led by their spinners, particularly Rashid Khan. The joy this win has brought to the Afghan community and the pride it has instilled, is something we truly want to share with our listeners. But that's not all. Our cricketing adventure continues with more news from around the globe. South Africa is making progress and exuding confidence, the IOC is stepping up to monitor women's accessibility to sports in Afghanistan, and Mickey Arthur, Pakistan's team director, isn't shy about voicing his criticism on the India vs Pakistan match. We leave you with our thoughts, discussions, and love for this magnificent sport, while eagerly looking forward to our next episode. One of the themes in our episode on team selection was how the change in playing conditions of ODIs had made selection hard. We dialed in on how the change in Powerplay rules, along with the two new balls at both ends, has reshaped in the cricketing contest in ODIs and thereby reshaped the way teams are being selected. Support 81allout via Ko-Fi Talking Points: How profound has the impact of the ODI Powerplay rules been since 2015? Is there clear evidence that introduction of two new balls at both ends has skewed the contest more in batters' favour? Has the elimination of the middle overs stalemate resulted in a diminishing role for part-time bowlers? How relevant are the middle-order accumulators since the new Powerplay rules came into being? Are teams fielding deeper bowling attacks than they did in the past? Is there scope for touch players under the new order? How have different teams responded to the change in Powerplay rules over the years? Given the competitive nature of teams in this format, can there be an overwhelming favourite at this World Cup? Has the elimination of stalemate resulted in bowlers attacking more in the middle overs or are batters scoring more runs at a faster clip? Can both be true? Has the Powerplay rule change enhanced the parity between bat and ball. Or has it diminished it?
